Beginning in 2008, people all over the world began to join a movement of communities coming together to reimagine rebuilding a new world. Called “Transition Towns,” they explored what it would take to transition from fossil fuels to clean energy. Media, Pennsylvania was the first town in Pennsylvania to become a Transition Town.

Media, Pennsylvania, created working groups around regenerative agriculture, composting, outreach, solar energy, and strengthening their local economy to help their town move from oil dependency to local resilience. Now 10 years later, their volunteer-led, working groups continue to research specific needs of their town to propose creative local solutions to the climate crisis while building community spirit and building partnerships.

Our municipality, Middletown Township, just became the first town in Bucks County to pass a Climate Action Plan. Many of the goals in this plan mirror Transition Towns. Come and see what we can learn from the successes and challenges of Media, Pennsylvania.

On Friday, October 15, at 2:00 p.m., on Channel 970, Yannick leads the Philadelphia Orchestra from the piano in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 12 and then conducts the orchestra in Florence Price’s Symphony No. 4. Active in the first half of the 20th century, Price was the first African-American woman recognized as a symphonic composer. The Philadelphians have been honoring her achievement.

This week, our twow destinations could not be more different!

Put on your swimwear and sunscreen, we are going to Hawaii! First, we go to the Honolulu Museum of Art as we join Curator Aimee Ng as she explores the Honolulu Museum of Art, which lent a portrait of Lady Meux by James McNeill Whistler to the Frick for its 2003 exhibition, “Whistler, Women, and Fashion.” Founded by Anna Rice Cooke, the daughter of a prominent missionary family in Hawaii, the Honolulu Museum of Art was meant to ensure that the children of the islands would have a place to learn not only about their own background and culture but about those of the diverse populations around them.

Next, we go to the heart and soul of Hawaii, Oahu. The island is the economic and cultural center of the Hawaiian archipelago and is home to more than half of all natives and almost eight million foreign guests annually. We will learn about the traditional floral decoration, leis, and the traditional tattooing skills of this tropical state.

The weather might be a bit different, so grab your sweater to explore Idaho. Our first city is Idaho Falls, Idaho. Currently this area of Eastern Idaho is considered one of the best places to live in America in terms of quality of life and affordability.

We then move onto Boise, the largest city in Idaho and one of the fastest growing cities in all of America to look at the Capitol and the Boise River area.

Alice Paul was an American Quaker, suffragist, feminist and women’s rights activist, one of the main leaders and strategists of the campaign for the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution that gave women the right to vote. Alice Paul re-enactor Taylor Williams has been a practicing lawyer for 30 plus years, with a J.D. degree from Temple University, Ms. Williams heads the litigation unit for Pennsylvania’s Unified Judiciary. She has been honored by the Welsh Society of Philadelphia for her contributions as a lawyer, actor, and teacher, and by the Philadelphia Young Playwrights for her work in advancing Philadelphia’s non-profit theatre community.

Newtown Friends School students will be donning costumes

and parading outdoors this year instead of through the

Community building. The parade will arrive on The Penns-

wood campus around 10:30 a.m. and exit by 11:15 a.m.

Step onto your patios or along the parade route to enjoy the

sights! The students will cross the meadow and enter

through the Bocce/Croquet courtyard, wind around to the

Jordan path into the Front Circle, exit through the Loe/Kinsey

Link into the Gazebo courtyard and depart via R5 parking lot.

Cafe and the Newtown Friends School bulletin boards.

Every day, I scan the obituaries to see why or how people die. You might call it morbid fascination, but I attribute it to the combined influence of my age (77) and my profession (health reporting).

One of the most frequent causes of death listed for people my age, as well as some younger and many older folks, is “complications from a fall.”…

Falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries among older adults. Every 19 minutes in this country, an older person dies from a fall.

On Sunday, October 31, the Resident Art

Gallery will open its new show, Artist’s

Choice, with a reception. Unfortunately, we

cannot invite outsiders to attend so the

family members of artists exhibiting cannot

be there. Nor can we offer refreshments.

This is very disappointing, but necessary.

Artists have often found it hard to place an

insurance value on their work as they bring

it in to the Gallery for exhibition. The

understanding has been that such

information was required for insurance

Pennswood carried. We have found only recently that this is not the case. Work you show is not

covered by Pennswood insurance policies. If you wish to insure your work, make sure your own

private insurance covers it.

We are looking forward to receiving your work (with a limit of two works per artist) at the Gallery on

the afternoon of Thursday, October 28 and to the formal opening on October 31 from 3:00 p.m. to

4:30 p.m. We hope that the artists of Pennswood are hard at work preparing to delight their fellow

residents.

Our next book discussion on Tuesday, November 9 at 10:30 a.m. is Caste by Pulitzer Prize winning author, Isabel Wilkerson. The author gives us a portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores stories about real people and how our history has been shaped by a hidden caste system—a rigid hierarchy of human ranking. Trip to the Princeton University Chapel

“When completed in 1928 at a cost of more than two million dollars, this imposing college chapel was second in size only to the chapel at King’s College, Cambridge.”

We will be visiting this amazing Tutor Gothic Chapel to admire the windows and banners on Monday, November 15. Our visit will take us up into the Chancel, which is named the Milbank Choir, to see the pews made of wood from the Sherwood Forest in England and the carved statues on the pews. Next, we will hear Eric Pluto, the University Organist, play on the Mander - Skinner organ. We will head for home around 3:00 p.m.

There are five steps with a handrail to go up into the Chancel. There are some steps with a handrail to get into the Chapel. The bathrooms are not handicapped accessible. All visitors must be vaccinated and wear masks.

The Pennswood bus will depart from the link door at 1:15 p.m. for our 2:00 p.m. visit. The $12 transportation cost will be billed on your monthly statement. You must be vaccinated and wear a mask. To sign up for this trip visit Touchtown, key word Chapel, or the Transportation Office.

Why Vote in Local Elections? Local (state, county, township) government directly affects the

quality of our daily lives. A sampling of issues handled through state & other local offices

would include such areas as court cases (handled by elected judges), pandemic regulations,

local infrastructure (roads, repairs, etc.), police department policy, parks, zoning laws,

education, emergency declarations, etc.

Philadelphia Orchestra 2022 Winter/Spring Live Concert Season

Concerts to which Pennswood Buses will take residents (minimum 6 residents)

All concerts are live in Verizon Hall (except for Friday, January 21 in the Academy of Music).

COVID restrictions now (October 2021) in place may still apply on the dates of the concerts you wish to attend. These include: Entry only with proof of full COVID vaccination (original card or photocopy plus picture ID); masks fully on during entire time in Kimmel Center (or Academy). Check for changes near date of each concert.

Pennswood bus will carry residents to a concert only if 6 or more residents are signed up for the bus when the sign-up sheet is removed and finalized. At that time, you are committed to pay for your bus seat. Unless you plan alternative transportation on your own, you may wish not to purchase orchestra tickets until 6 or more residents are signed up for the bus to the concerts you wish to attend.

You are responsible for purchasing your own concert tickets (available on-line or by phone at 215-893-1955, Monday—Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.). Pennswood bus transportation is offered for 10 concerts, five are the FRIDAY A matinee subscription series and five the FRIDAY B series, as listed below.
