ActivitiesWe have a tour scheduled on Saturday, February 13, 2010 at 9:30 a.m. of the shop of Patrick Jaromin, who is located at 3524 Falkner Drive in Naperville IL. Patrick is an accomplished woodworker

whose shop was featured in the November issue of Woodcraft magazine. If you did not sign up for the tour and would like to attend, please call Dale Gustafson at 630-849-6211.

On March 13, we are planning a seminar on how to sharpen chisels and plane blades. The seminar will be held at the shop of Rick Ogren, 4533 Linscott Ave. in Downers Grove. At this event you will have not only the

opportunity to evaluate and sharpen your tools on the Worksharp and Tormec sharpening systems but will also receive expert instruction from Wayne Maier on the proper method of traditional hand sharpening. Sign up will be at the February meeting.

In April, we are tentatively planning an all-day chip carving seminar that will be led by Milford Lau. Look for details in the next

At the January meeting, Chris Dwyer, local representative for Blum Inc., a leading manufacturer of functional hardware for the kitchen cabinet, gave a very informative presentation. He talked about cabinet construction, with the frame cabinet being the number one seller in the U.S. Blum uses the metric system and their colorful and detailed catalogue has a convenient quick reference conversion chart included. I was impressed with all the products, tables, photos, applications and examples. He also talked about hinge terminology and mounting plate selection. The clip top hinge is the best seller in the U.S. Before they sell a product it is tested far more than the national average required. E.G., with the static load test, Chris said they do 200,000 open and close cycles, which exceeds the requirements of ANSI-BHMA standards for cycle life by 100,000! Chris also talked about their premium concealed runners for wood drawers. He highlighted selection, measurement, locking

newsletter.

In May, we are planning a visit to Crab Tree Farm at 982 Sheridan Road in Lake Bluff, IL. The guided tour at Crab Tree Farm will take you through 5 restored farms buildings that house an extensive collection of Arts and Crafts furniture. There will be $15 per person fee for the guided tour, which takes 1 hour and 45 minutes. The date for this tour is still pending. Sign up will be at the April meeting.

From Our LibraryNot much to report this month, however, I did purchase a new book recently.  It's The Perfect Edge, The Ultimate Guide to Sharpening for Woodworkers, by Ron Hock.  Quite a lengthy title, but the topic should be of interest to all of the DPWW

members.

First, something about Ron Hock and his business. He is the owner of Hock Tools, a 25 year old cottage industry that makes superior blades for planes and other woodworking tools. Hock started the business when students at James Krenov's woodworking program at The College of the Redwoods asked him to make plane irons for the wooden planes they were making. He learned about plane making and found a nice market

devices, sockets and again testing.

Blum is family owned and was formed in 1952 in Hoechst, Austria. Its North American debut was in 1977 in Hickory, NC and 2 years later moved to Stanley, N.C. where it has been since. If anyone is interested in more information contact Chris at 815-529-8262 or his local company: www.bilmarcompany.com or go to the main Blum, Inc site at www.blum.com .

At the February meeting, Fred Rizza, DPWW member, will present a program on a Mahogany tilt top table he made recently. He used a design from Woodworker’s Journal from 1989 and made changes in assembly and jigs to improve on the original design.

Fred will share with us his method of making this table, special jigs, and other secrets. With over 60 years in the woodworking business and hobby, he brings unique ideas and that is what our club is about, sharing ideas.

for woodworkers who appreciate a superior tool.

Since making his first plane blades 25 years go, he has learned about tool steel metallurgy, cutting edge geometry, hand woodworking tools and sharpening.  He writes, in his introduction, "A perfect edge is the intersection between two surfaces.  You need only:  1. Determine the correct angle for that intersection; 2. Rub the tool at the appropriate angle on an abrasive surface until that intersection is created; and 3. Repeat #2 with successively finer grits until the desired degree of "polish" is obtained."  Something almost all of us know. However, it's in performing these three tasks that this book is outstanding.  First, there's a chapter on "Why Sharpen" followed by "What is Steel", then "Abrasives".  Further in the book he covers "The Fundamentals" and then each chapter after that covers a specific type of of iron to sharpen, including Plane Irons, Chisels, Scrapers, Carving Tools, Turning Tools Axes and Adzes, Knives, Drill Bits and various Power Tools.

There are detailed illustrations and plenty of information about how to sharpen tools.  This is a very worthwhile book to add to the library.

As a further note to our task last month to review DVDs, it has been decided that we will not keep in the library any DVDs that are not originals, i.e, no copies.  After all, the persons who make these DVDs don't need us to pirate their work and they need to make a living too.  So when you return those DVDs that I handed out last month, I will determine which ones we will be keeping in the library.

That's it From Our Library for February, 2010.

Secretaryʼs Report Board Meeting of January 4, 2010

Rick Ogren called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m. Present were Dale Gustafson, Tom Perry, Bill Hockmuth, Dic Drees, Bruce Kinney, Whit Anderson, Cathy

Godfrey, Stan Anderson, Len Swanson, and Jerry Johnson. Reminder: Any club member is welcome to attend board meetings.

The minutes and treasurer’s report for February were approved.

Bruce reported that we have 138 paid members for 2010 and only eighteen have not renewed from last year. Of those, sixteen were contacted by email and two by phone.

There was a discussion on materials in the library, which led to a statement that the club and the board need to actively discourage the duplication of any copyrighted items.

Stan kicked off the 2010 toy campaign with the presentation of prototypes of several different toys we can consider making this year including lidded boxes, puzzles, and a pull toy. There was also discussion of whether we can apply a finish to any of the items. A

Jerry Johnson

new law that is now in effect requires lab certification of the safety of any finish on a toy furnished to the public. This includes “…those making charitable donations,…” The law also covers certain glues. The board confirmed that we would continue to provide toys without a finish. The glue situation will require more investigation.

Bill had samples of the updated club brochure and a new smaller size one suitable for posting on community bulletin boards. Several board members took some of the new one for posting.

It was suggested that we consider a catered meal for the Christmas party. At least one other club does this at a low cost. This will be added to the suggestions reported in the January minutes to be considered later in the year.

Coffee, Coffee, CoffeeOur thanks to Wayne Maier for getting the

coffee and cookies ready at the January meeting.

Door PrizesThe door prizes for this month are a Bosch

jigsaw, a Freud tongue and groove router bit, and a set of KIK forstner bits generously donated by Rich  Rossio.--Len Swanson

Meeting Location

New MembersThe DuPage Woodworkers welcomes members from all over

the region. Our members consist of all skill levels; from beginners to professionals. Meetings and field trips provide an opportunity to gain and share knowledge about woodworking. Our regular meetings are once a month for about 2 1/2 hours. Meetings (usually the fourth Wednesday of the month) consist of some announcements about activities, a short discussion of any woodworking problems that members want to ask about, a drawing for woodworking prizes, and a presentation on some aspect of woodworking.

If you are interested in joining the DuPage Woodworkers, you are invited to attend a meeting. If you become a member, dues are twenty-five dollars per year. Membership entitles you to attend meetings, to go on field trips (shop visits, woodworking businesses, etc.), and a discount at several local woodworking supply companies.

If you have questions about joining the DuPage Woodworkers, please contact Bruce Kinney ([email protected]).
