Sunday, August 9 Reading Reflection

Today God reminds us that he is transcendent, that is to say that, he is beyond description, powerful beyond all else, that he is indeed God. God is God. I was talking to one of our recently confirmed about today’s readings

and this is what hit him. We see this in both the description of God revealed in the whispering sound and the walking on the water. In the first reading we would think that God shows himself in power and grandeur, like in storms, giant rainbows, amazing sunsets, and so on. We would not think that God reveals himself in a tiny whispering sound. But he does. We are reminded that we can’t “guess” at what God is like. He is beyond our power to predict or imagine. He has to reveal himself. We can’t generate his existence by our desire or will. What is more is Jesus, who is God, walks on the water. This is a miracle. It shows that Jesus is God. We forget that. Jesus is transcendent. He is divine. Peter is amazed and tries to walk on the water and even manages to be like God for a bit before he fails, for he is not God. Jesus, helps him up, and takes all the disasters away and in the silence that ensues what happens? Then his friends really realize he is divine, and they worship him. This is what happens to us and is happening now. There are all kinds of things going on that are scary and confusing. There are all kinds of crashing controversies and looming problems that seem to only spell certain doom. We think that there might be some spectacular intervention on God’s part that will dazzle and amaze. Even if there were, it wouldn’t work though. We still wouldn’t “get it.” We would be like Peter, amazed for a bit but still in trouble. It is only when God makes the silence that we will be saved. God will. He makes peace and then we will bow down in worship. Fr. St. Martin
