Mission Statement

The Dunn County Humane Society (DCHS) is dedicated to improving the lives of companion animals in our community and finding permanent and loving adoptive homes for the animals in our care. DCHS promotes the humane treatment of animals and operates as a no-kill facility, a philosophy that has been with the or-ganization from the beginning. We do not forfeit the life of one animal to make space for another. All in-

coming animals are evaluated, medically treated and rehabilitated when possible. DCHS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that relies on the good will and generosity of individuals and corporations.

Fostering/Volunteering – It Does a Heart Good! (by Jackie Greene)

I became a volunteer at the Dunn County Humane Society in 2004 after our dog of 13 years passed away. My husband and I were at a time in our lives that we weren’t sure we wanted to commit to the responsibility of another dog, but I knew I still wanted the joys of an animal in my life. He suggested I volunteer at the Humane Society. At that time, I was not even aware where the Humane Society was but I called the phone number and got signed up for the volunteer class. After about six months of volunteering, mostly working with the dogs and helping out with fundraisers, I was asked by the director if we would be willing to foster a pregnant cat. Growing up with dogs in our household, having a cat in the house would be a different experience but we were willing to help out, thus Jax came into our lives.

After about a month of caring for Jax and loving her as our own, she gave birth to five beautiful kittens. We took the time to name each one of them and watching them grow and discover new things was very entertaining. The experience was very rewarding and we knew that if we could help and give love to these little animals, we could make it possible for them to be loved the way they deserve to be in a forever home. Over the years we have been foster parents to many pregnant, injured and orphaned cats and kittens for the Humane Society. I will be honest, not all of them had good outcomes. Some were just not strong enough to pull through, but each one we have brought into our home over the years has brought such love and affection. It’s overwhelming how simple it is and how fortunate we are to have been a small part of shaping their lives. All we have to do is love them, play with them, feed them and provide them temporary shelter until the DCHS finds them their forever home. When you give them back, a part of you goes with them and that time you put into them, goes with them into their new home. Not every animal gets an opportunity to be loved, and as a foster parent, you get to give that love.

If you are interested in becoming a foster parent or volunteer, please contact the shelter at 715-232-9790. If you think these options are just not right for you, but would still like to support the shelter, other options to consider are, assisting with our fundraisers, becoming a member or renewing your membership, becoming a G.E.M. or making a monetary donation. The stray, homeless animals we take in at DCHS would not survive without your help.

I’ve got a favor to ask...

Autumn is upon us and we find ourselves with two things in great abundance here at the shelter. Leaves on the lawn and, you guessed it, cats!! I wanted to share with you how many cats we have here and then ask a favor of you.

Right now we have 176 cats. The shelter was designed for between 30 and 60 cats. So...we’re a just a tad over capacity. We are ahead of last year’s numbers and I suspect that October will bring us even more cats.

Unfortunately, the trend-lines show that we are likely going to see our cat numbers continue to increase (see below) at a higher rate than in years past. Now we love our feline friends and will continue to work hard to find them forever homes. This year, we’ve tried multiple adoption fee reductions, released over nearly 50 altered feral cats, and participated in multiple adoption fairs at our pet store partners in Eau Claire.

That all being said, the single most effec-tive way to keep the feline population in check is to spay and neuter cats. We’re working on grants to help provide some options for Dunn County residents, but education is the primary way we are going to help accomplish this. Here’s where the favor comes in: please help spread the word and share how important it is to spay and neuter cats. Especially if you know people who allow their cats to free roam unaltered.

Here’s some numbers to illustrate how important this is. A breeding pair of cats, can produce 2 litters per year. With a conservative 2.8 surviving kittens on average, that litter can multiply to 67 cats in 2 years...2,107 cats in 4 years…66,088 cats in 6 years...and, well I think you see where this is going. There are an estimated 60-100 million stray cats in the United States alone and there always seem to be more cats than homes willing to take them.

It’s easy to get jaded and think that people should know this and we can’t do anything about it, but even if you just convince one friend, relative, or acquaintance of the importance, you’ve helped out tremendous-ly! As a valued supporter of the DCHS, this favor will help keep our stray feline population in check here in Dunn County.

Board of Directors Openings

The DCHS is seeking members who are interested in serving

on the Board of Directors. We have members whose terms are

ending. Board members are elected for 2-year terms. Board

members must be able to attend scheduled board and commit-

tee meetings and should have a genuine commitment to the so-

ciety and its mission. Fundraising events, organizational deci-

sion-making, monitoring of finances and educational programs

are some of the functions board members actively participate in.

If you have a sincere interest in the welfare of the animals of

Dunn County, serving on the Board will be a rewarding experi-

ence. Send a letter of interest and any experience or qualifica-

tions to the DCHS president by December 15, 2014.
