Year 12 Formal Last Thursday night Year 12 celebrated the end of the HSC exams and concluded their time at Dungog High School at their formal. The picturesque venue was Riverwood Downs, the ladies looked stunning and the males looked fetching in their suits. All students, parents and staff that attended had a great night and enjoyed the proceedings. A big thank you needs to go to Billie Jo Herron, her mother Jody and Jessica Kemp for their organisation and planning. Mrs Kemp has done an outstanding job as the Year 12 Advisor this year and it was a pleasure to see her and her year group enjoy the evening. SCHOOL SHOES and UNIFORM Overall, student compliance with the school dress code is fantastic. There are many positive comments by visitors, parents and community members about the way our school presents to the community. However, there are a large number of students who do not wear the correct shoes. We have been encouraging students each day regarding this matter. Students seem to have some fascination with wearing canvas shoes or slip on shoes and go to great lengths to hide this. If you are buying footwear for school they need to be completely black and leather as well as sturdy (suede will do). Black leather shoes are required for all days except sport days. Please don’t allow your child to talk you out of this for some fashionable look-a-like item that may be a combination of black and another colour. Generally you will get twice the length of wear out of the sturdier shoe and meet all safety requirements that the school has to demand of students on the school site. We seek your cooperation on this matter, please. HOT WEATHER AND SCHOOL We seem to be in for a few hot days as we head to the end of the school term. We have adequate shade for students who wish to use it. However, hot weather can be uncomfortable and quite debilitating for younger students. We do allow students to have water bottles in class and students do get short breaks between lessons to assist with the situation. We do encourage students to wear a hat and adequate sun protection. If a hat or cap is not ‘cool’ to wear, (quite often the case with teenagers) then we encourage students to stay in the shade. Can parents please encourage students to bring their own water bottle, wear a hat or cap and adopt a more passive approach to activities in hot weather? This may assist students to build a capacity to handle the hot weather a little better while at school. Health Updates A reminder to parents to notify the school about your child’s health. We welcome information from parents about your children, even if you are not requesting specific support from our school. Our school asks for medical information when you enrol your child. It is also important that you let us know if your child’s health care needs change or if a new health condition develops. Information about allergies, medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, anaphylaxis and other health care related issues (including prior conditions such as medical procedures in the last 12 months) should be provided to the school by parents. In most cases this will require a medical plan developed and signed by your local doctor. Please provide this information in writing to our Head Teacher Welfare, Miss Dibley. This will greatly assist our school in planning to support your child’s health and wellbeing. Please also remember to notify staff in the school office of any changes to your contact details or to the contact details of other people nominated as emergency contacts. Parent Portal (Sentral) Sentral's parent portal provides parents with 24/7 access to important information about their child/children. To use the Parent portal, you will need to register as a parent user. New parents have been sent a letter from the school by Mr Curran, our Sentral Coordinator, explaining this simple process and providing you with a unique access code. You cannot register without this code. If you do not receive a letter, or if you lose your registration access code, you can contact the school for a new one. You will be able to register for the Parent Portal at any time after receiving the letter. Student Letterbox To save students lining up and waiting to hand in notes or pay for excursions, fees, etc we have started a new system with a ‘Student Letterbox’. Students can drop the following in the Letterbox: permission notes, absence notes, correct monies with permission note in a sealed envelope, and early leaver requests – (note all Thursday early leaver requests must FIRST be signed by the Deputy). If a student does need change and/or a receipt to take home they will need to stay in line, or come back later to collect it.

David Evans – Commendation for Courageous Action – Fire and Rescue NSW The school is very proud to have David Evans as our General Assistant in the school. He recently received a commendation from Fire and Rescue for his courageous actions during the Dungog Floods in April 2015. In extremely dangerous conditions, David was part of a crew who removed several occupants including young children and pets whilst wading through fast moving flood water over 1.5 metres in depth in places. He is a valued employee and the school is honoured to have him on our staff. Student Achiever of the Week Award Recipients for this week are: Blake Sanderson and Declan Gilbert Blake has shown a strong commitment to his Business Studies course and this has reflected in both his results for this semester and his contribution to the classroom. He is able to take a mature approach to the rigours of study and shows a genuine interest in the complexities of business operations. I commend him for the work he has done not only this semester but indeed all year, and I offer my congratulations for this well earned recognition as student of the week. Declan has worked conscientiously all year, striving to improve his outcomes in English. The assessment results for this Semester show that his efforts have paid off. He is a role model to the other students in the class as he is attentive, finishes all set tasks and is polite and respectful. Blake and Declan will receive a certificate and $25 voucher.

Science News L'Oréal Australia Girls in Science Forum 2016

Four female Science students from Dungog High recently attended the L'Oréal-UNESCO Women in Science Fellows Girls in Science Schools

Forum at the University of New South Wales.

Three inspiring women in the early stages of their scientific careers each gave a talk covering their scientific interests and the discoveries they

have made. The students also had an opportunity to hear about the potential for future study or careers in science, and had a tour of a

medical Science research laboratory.

A big thanks to Robyn Keller for transporting the students and allowing them to have this fantastic opportunity.

MUSIC AT THE DUNGOG FESTIVAL

This year proved to be a great success for the Dungog High School Musos who performed at the Festival.

At the Long Table Dinner Gabi Griffith and Annie Shumack braved the pouring rain to set up and sing as the guests arrived. It was a heavy downpour with tarpaulins placed over all the sound equipment and then miraculously, the rain cleared and a great night followed.

On Saturday morning our Stage Band and vocalists took to the street to entertain before and after the Parade.

As well as current students we welcomed back some of our Year 12 members who had just completed their Higher School Certificate Examinations.

Welcome also to Levi Neave, an ex student who came and played bass for some of our songs. Thanks Levi.

It is always a rewarding experience for students and also for the town when we have music. A great time for all.

Thanks to everyone involved, particularly people who live out of town and make the effort to support Dungog High. This never goes unnoticed!

Year 12 Doughheads Excursion On Friday the 11th of November, the two Year 12 Business Studies classes, accompanied

by Mrs Neilson and Mrs Judd, visited ‘Doughheads’ at the Junction. The owner of the store, Anna, told us her story of how she created the doughnut phenomenon in Newcastle.

She discussed with us the key business functions, Operations, Marketing, Finance and Human Resources, and how each of these relate to her business. Many of the students

had questions prepared to ask Anna about her business, and it was seen to be a valuable experience for Year 12, as we are currently studying the function of Operations. We were able to relate the information received from Anna to our work in class, and it was a very worthwhile day. The staff and students also got to see the doughnuts being made, and

were able to try the delicious finished product, which we all enjoyed greatly.

James Theatre The Girl on the Train (MA 15+) Saturday, 19 November, 7.30 pm Emily Blunt, Rebecca Ferguson, Haley Bennett, Justin Theroux, Luke Evans, Allison Janney, Edgar Ramirez, Lisa Kudrow and Laura Prepon star in DreamWorks Pictures’ The Girl on the Train, from director Tate Taylor (The Help, Get on Up) and producer Marc Platt (Bridge of Spies, Into the Woods). In the thriller, Rachel (Blunt), who is devastated by her recent divorce, spends her daily commute fantasizing about the seemingly perfect couple who live in a house that her train passes every day, until one morning she sees something shocking happen there and becomes entangled in the mystery that unfolds. Based on Paula Hawkins’ bestselling novel, The Girl on the Train is adapted for the screen by Erin Cressida Wilson and Taylor. The Beatles: Eight Days A Week - The Touring Years (M) Sunday, 20 November, 7 pm The Beatles: Eight Days A Week - The Touring Years is based on the first part of The Beatles’ career (1962-1966) – the period in which they toured and captured the world’s acclaim. Ron Howard’s film shows how John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr came together to become this extraordinary phenomenon, “The Beatles.” It explores their inner workings – how they made decisions, created their music and built their collective career together – all the while, showcasing The Beatles’ extraordinary and unique musical gifts and their remarkable, complementary personalities. The film focuses on the time period from the early Beatles’ journey in the days of The Cavern Club in Liverpool to their last concert at Candlestick Park in San Francisco in 1966. Inferno (M) Mystery/Thriller Saturday 26 November, 7.30 PM The Robert Langdon Series by master storyteller Dan Brown continues with this thriller directed by Ron Howard and written by David Koepp, based on the 2013 novel of the same name. Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) wakes up in a hospital room in Florence, Italy, with no memory of what has happened in the past few days. Suddenly, he finds himself the target of a manhunt. With the help of Dr. Sienna Brooks (Felicity Jones) and his knowledge of symbology, he must foil a deadly global genocide scheme. Together, they race across Europe and against the clock to stop a madman (Ben Foster) from unleashing a virus that could wipe out half of the world's population. He follows clues in Dante's Alighieri's The Divine Comedy and is taken to Florence and Venice, where he must race across a landscape of classic art, secret passageways, and futuristic science, all while solving the most intricate riddle he's ever come across.
