February 1889 acted as chairman at meeting of Cawdor Mutual Improvement Society

"Feelings of deep regret were occasioned in the Cawdor district when it became known

that Mr. Peter Mackenzie, Carpenter, Broomhill Cottage, Cawdor had passed away in his

72nd year. Of a quiet unassuming manner, Peter had a host of friends who will mourn his

loss. A first class workman, he served for many years under late Roderick Mackenzie,

Blairmore, and afterwards carried on successfully on his own account. He was a regular

attendee and staunch supporter of the Cawdor North Church until the infirmities of old age

made this impossible. Sympathetic reference was made from the pulpit on Sunday by the

Rev. John Rose who said Mr. Mackenzie was a workman who might not be ashamed. He

had a long family connection with the church, to who he was very generous. He was

faithful and unostentatious in his work. Testimony of his skill and craft was borne out in

the beautiful out in the beautiful workmanship of the pulpit chair which he gifted to the

church to which he ever gave much concern. To his relatives Mr. Rose extended the

congregations sympathy. A keen horticulturalist he took an active interest in the Cawdor

Horticultural Society and up to a few years ago was a noted exhibitor and prize-winner."

CROFTER'S TRAGIC END The mysterious disappearance three weeks ago of Peter

Mackintosh, Crofter Dundeasil, Clunas, was solved on Sunday evening by the finding of

his remains a short distance from the mouth of Nairn harbour. Shortly after 6 o'clock on

Sunday evening when the tide had ebbed, Pilot Jamieson had noticed the dead body of a

man floating in the sea about 140 yards from the west quay. With much promptitude he

waded into the sea and succeeded in bringing the remains ashore. They were taken to the

police mortuary where they were identified. Deceased was about forty eight years of age,

and belonged to Nairnshire. He had been in Nairn on Tuesday 4th inst, when he was last

seen at a late hour near the harbour. Not returning home after some days had passed,

suspicions arose as to his safety, and it was thought he had wandered towards the harbour

and fallen in. These fears were realized by the Friday night finding of the body, as stated.

The night deceased disappeared was very dark and stormy, and it was dangerous for one

not acquainted with it to be in the vicinity.

ROMANCE OF HYDE PARK SHEPHERD HONEYMOON ON LONELY ISLE

A real romance of a shepherd's plaid and a little wooden hut lies behind the wedding at the hill sheep

farm of Burntack, Dunphail, last night of George Mackintosh the young Nairnshire man who for past

two years has been the object of so much hero-worship as the "Hyde Park Shepherd"

A native of Cawdor, where his father farms the holding of Lynethobair, young Mackintosh is a fully

qualified chemist. His life in the army as a Seaforth and Gordon Highlander however completely

unsettled for an indoor calling, and having acquired a good knowledge of agricultural work on his

father's farm, he decided to become a shepherd.

His abilities speedily became widely known amongst flockmasters and early in 1924 he was invited to

go London to look after the flock of one thousand sheep

Which are annually fattened there for the Smithfield Market.

His good looks, his broad Scots tongue, and his youth - he is twenty five- not to mention his fair isle

jumper, speedily made him known to millions of Londoners who frequented Hyde Park, and as he

himself slyly admits, not a few demure maidens showed more than a fleeting interest in the handsome

Highland shepherd. As yesterday's ceremony suggest, however, their admiration was in vain, for the

young shepherd's heart was in the Highlands.

Each year, on completing his engagements in Hyde Park, Mackintosh returned north for winter duties

on the hills of Morayshire, and it was while so engaged that he first met his bride, then little more than a

schoolgirl.

His headquarters were at the farm of Burntack Dunphail, six hundred feet above sea level, where his

employer, Mr. Minto Bruce, who resides at the lowland farm of Langeot, Kinloss, placed a room at his

disposal.

Apparently, however, the young shepherd considered that he had enough of fending for himself in the

hut in Hyde Park, and he had not been long at Burntack before he opened domestic negotiations with

Mrs. Begg, wife of the farm grieve.

The result was that Mackintosh speedily cast his lot in with the Beggs, and there began the romance that

ended last night in wedding bells. It was a romance of what is known in rural Scotland as "the lang

forenichts"

Not long before Mackintosh's advent pretty Miss Margaret Begg, having completed her schooling,

returned home to assist her mother, and round the blazing peat fire, when the young shepherd's duties on

the often snow-clad uplands were over for the day, a friendship sprang up between the young couple.

With the spring Mackintosh departed again last year for London, where in his hut in Hyde Park a

photograph of a bonny highland lassies, prominently displayed, hinted at the old, old story, But

interviewers found the reserved Scotsman blandly determined not to be drawn.

When he was free to quit London once more he took both the photograph and his secret with him, but

the secret is out now.

It is typical of the man and the serious manner in which he regards his responsibilities that he should

have seen his winter job through before he ventured into the distractions of matrimony, but in the end he

wasted no time. His contract expired only on Thursday, and yesterday, within the little parlour of the

hill farmhouse Mackintosh and his landlady's daughter not yet twenty years of age, were made man and

wife. This year, at any rate, Londoners will have no opportunity of seeing the young shepherd and his

bride in the accustomed corner of Hyde Park.

Mackintosh has another job, in hand this summer, on little island in the estuary of the River Findhorn

known as the Carse of Moy, and it is in a little wooden hut in this secluded and picturesque spot that the

honeymoon will be spent"
