It’s not that Jesus is rooting for the poor or the unfortunate. Jesus is saying, if you face trouble because you chose to follow me, you will be blessed. Sometimes persecution leads to focus and motivation. Last week in the Titans win over the Seattle Seahawks, Richard Sherman took a “cheap shot” at Titan’s quarterback Marcus Mariota as he was stepping out of bounds. As a result, there was an infusion of energy and a momentum surge from everyone playing for the Titans. They suddenly were extremely motivated to win. If we aren’t being persecuted for being a Christian, maybe we should be asking if we are living lives in pursuit of faith and righteousness. Christians should never be afraid of the path before them, even if it includes persecution.
