Days 1: Depart U.S. for Hanoi, Vietnam

Day 2: Arrive Hanoi We arrive in theVietnamese capital this evening, then transfer toour hotel.

Day 3: Hanoi This morning we take a walkingtour of Ba Dinh Square, a popular complex ofcultural and historic sites, including the marbleand granite mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh, thePresidential Palace, and thousand-year-old OnePillar Pagoda. Following lunch on our own weembark on an orientation tour of this French-accented city. We pass Hoan Kiem Lake; visitthe marvelous Temple of Literature (c. 1070);and tour infamous Hoa Lo Prison, also known asthe “Hanoi Hilton” during the Vietnam War.Later we walk the narrow streets of the diverseAncient Quarter. Tonight we gather at a localrestaurant for a welcome dinner. B,D

Day 4: Hanoi/Ha Long Bay Early this morn-ing we depart on a full-day excursion to Ha LongBay, a breathtaking waterway sprinkled with 3,000islands and islets, and surrounded by a fairytalelandscape of limestone cliffs, secret grottoes, andhidden caves. Our tour includes a boat ride andseafood lunch. B,L

Day 5: Hanoi/Da Nang We fly this morning toDa Nang, Vietnam’s third-largest city situated onthe south central coast. Upon arrival, we tour theacclaimed Cham Museum, which celebrates theCham people’s Hindu legacy with a fine collectionof sculpture and artifacts dating from the 7th to15th centuries. We reach our beachfront hotel mid-afternoon; the remainder of the day is at leisure inthis splendid setting. B,D

Day 6: Da Nang/Hoi An This morning wevisit nearby Hoi An, where a succession of Dutch,Chinese, Portuguese, and Japanese traders helpedto build an architecturally diverse and colorful vil-lage where many ancient traditions still holdsway. A UNESCO World Heritage site, HoiAn’s Old Town is a charming car-free pedestrianzone. Day 7: Da Nang A morning walking tour of afarming settlement reveals the daily life of a localcommunity up close. Day 8: Da Nang/Hue We depart this morningby coach for the ancient imperial city of Hue,whose palaces, temples, and tombs evoke its pastgrandeur as home to emperors and mandarins.We enjoy a traditional cyclo ride as we explorethe Imperial City, housing the Forbidden PurpleCity complex where emperors lived with theirfamilies and now a UNESCO World Heritagesite. Day 9: Hue This morning we cruise alongHue’s Perfume River to peaceful Thien MuPagoda, a Buddhist monastery that ranks amongthe city’s oldest and most important monuments.After admiring the seven-story octagonal tower,visit the palatial Tomb of Ming Mang (c. 1804),modeled after the Ming Tombs of China. Thisafternoon we see the tombs of Tu Doc, a gem of

royal architecture; and Khai Dinh, an elaboratemix of ancient and modern, European and Asian.B,L

Day 10: Hue/Mekong Delta/Can Tho Todayis a travel day that begins with an early morningflight to Saigon. Upon arrival we transfer to amotorcoach for the three-hour drive south to theMekong River town of Cai Be. From there wetravel by coach to the busy river port and provin-cial capital of Can Tho. B,D

Day 11: Can Tho/Mekong Delta We riseearly for today’s journey by boat to the bustlingfloating market at Cai Rang on the Mekong’slower reaches. After lunch together at a localrestaurant, return to our hotel for an afternoonand evening at leisure. B,L

Day 13: Saigon A morning tour includes theformer Presidential Palace, which served as theSouth Vietnamese government’s wartime head-quarters.
