Head coach Robyn Horner has led the Duke rowing program for 17 yearsafterbeingnamedtheuniversity’sfirstrowingcoachonJuly1,1998.

After starting the program from scratch 17 years ago, Horner has turned the team into a perennialACC top-three finisher as evidencedby its 12top-threefinishesattheconferencefinals.ShehascoachedsixAll-Americaselectionsand20student-athleteswhowentontoreceiveAll-ACChonors.

Horner has twice been named ACC Coach of the Year, most recently in 2006whensheledtheprogramtoasecond-placefinishattheACCCham-pionships. She also took home the ACC Coach of the Year award in 2002 along with South Region Coach of the Year honors after her Blue Devils earnedaspotamongthenationaltop-20throughouttheentireseason.

The 2014 campaign had Duke appear in the CRCA/US Rowing Coaches Pollinconsecutiveseasons,andfortheseventhtimeunderHorner.Itwasthe Blue Devils’ ninth overall appearance in the poll and third in the last two seasons. Duke’s varsity eight led the way the entire season, advancing to the Grand Final at the ACC Championship as the team earned an over-allfifth-placefinishattheevent.KatieDukovichwasnamedtotheCRCAAll-SouthRegionfirst teamwhileCarolineWilliamsearnedaspotonthesecond team.

A year earlier in 2013, Duke cracked the CRCA/US Rowing Coaches PollTop-20 inback-to-backweeksatNo.20spot.Duketookthirdat theACC Championship and stormed past ACC foe Clemson in the varsity eight totakesecondplace.Duketoppedthe14th-rankedTigerstwicein2013,bothtimesonClemson’shomewater.SeniorEmilyTheysearnedAll-Amer-ica honors, becoming the sixth under Honor to receive that distinction.

In 2012, Duke turned in several of the fastest times in school history, including top-fivemarks in theV8,2V8andV4.TheBlueDevilsfinishedthe 2012 season on a strong note, winning the Cal Cup at the San Di-egoCrewClassicfollowingathird-placefinishattheACCChampionships.EmilyTheysreceivedAll-ACChonorsforthesecondstraightyearin2012alongside Kathy Smithwick after helping the Duke V8 place third in the ACC Championships.TheyswentontoearnAll-SouthRegionhonorsaswell.

In2011,Horner ledDuketoyetanothertop-threefinishattheconfer-ence championships with the Blue Devils placing third in three of their four races,and,inoutstandingfinish,Duke’snoviceeightboatfinishedsecond.TheDuketeamcollected41pointstofinishthirdoverall.

Duke’s success was not just limited to the ACC Championship in 2011, however,astheBlueDevilstookthirdplaceinthevarsityeightgrandfinalattheOakRidgeInviationalaheadof20th-rankedNotreDameand25th-ranked Lousiville and Oklahoma on Melton Lake. Alex Japhet and Theys wererewardedwithAll-ACChonorsfortheireffortsduringtheseason.

Along with their success on the water, the Blue Devils also excelled in theclassroomwithaprogram-recordsixstudent-athletes,includingToriAr-endt,KatieBurke,JolineDoedens,RoryErickson-Kulas,JustineHongandTheysallnamedNationalRowingScholar-Athletes.

In 2010, Duke placed third in all three events it entered, notching third placeoverallattheACCChampionship.TwoBlueDevilstabbedAll-ACCselections,includingJaphetandErickson-Kulas.

HornerguidedDuke toapairof top-threefinishes in thenoviceeightandvarsityfouratthe2009ACCChampionshipstofinishinfifthplacewithLesleyKingearningherfirstAll-ACCrecognitionandwasDuke’slonerep-resentativeontheall-conferencesquad.

In 2008, Horner lead her Blue Devils to third place at the ACC Cham-pionshipandavictoryover10th-rankedMichiganatGriggsReservoiraspartof theACC-Big10Challenge.FourDukerowerswerenamedtotheAll-ACCAcademicRowingTeam,theprogram’slargestAll-ACCAcademicclasssincetheawardwasfirstinstitutedin2006.

The 2007 season was similar in that Duke took third at the ACC Cham-pionshipandtiedaschoolrecordwiththreeAll-ACCselectionsandanotherAll-Americahonoree.Duke’stopboattooksecondplaceattheconferencefinal,trailingVirginiabylessthansixseconds.

In2006,HornerguidedtheBlueDevilstoasecond-placeoverallfinishat the ACC Championship despite competing in only three of the four races. ThreeBlueDevilsearnedAll-ACChonors,includingToniaBoock,CarolineWrayandeventual two-timeAll-AmericaLiaHart.Dukewenton tofinish11th at the Aramark Central/South Region Sprints that season with three BlueDevilsreceivingAll-SouthRegioncitations.

In2005,Dukefinished thirdat theACCChampionshipwith twoBlueDevilsearningAll-ACChonors.Dukethenplaced15thattheCentral/SouthRegion Sprints to end the campaign.

The 2004 season marked a new era, which started by winning the Long-hornInvitationalonthestrengthofvictoriesbythefirstvarsity8+andsec-ondvarsity8+.Forthethirdstraightyear,theBlueDevilscapturedsecondplace at the ACC Championship. At the Regional Championships, the sec-ondvarsity8+madehistory,winningthepetitefinal.IndividualpostseasonhonorsincludedoneAll-America,oneCRCANationalScholarAthlete,twoAll-SouthregionpicksandtwoAll-ACCselections.

In 2003, Duke placed second at the ACC Championship, and the varsity 8+finishedsecondinthepetitefinaloftheJessop-WhittierCupattheSanDiego Crew Classic.

In2002,HornerguidedtheBlueDevilstoatop-20rankingthroughtheentirespringseason.Inadditiontothenationalrankingandasecond-placefinishattheACCChampionship,thevarsity8+alsowontheCalCupattheSanDiegoCrewClassicandfinishedsixthintheGrandFinalattheSouth/Central Region Sprints, narrowly missing the cut for an NCAA bid. For the team’s aggressive jump in performance in 2002, Horner was awarded ACC and South Region Coach of the Year honors. End of the season honors werenumerousfortheDukerowersin2002aswell,withtwoAll-AmericahonoreesandfourAll-SouthRegionselections.

Horner came toDuke after an impressive two-year stint as the headwomen’s coach at Williams College in Massachusetts. She led Williams to theNo.1rankingbothinthe1996-97andthe1997-98seasons.Inherfinalseason,Horner’s varsity8+squadwon theNewEnglandChampionshipandhadavarsity4+thatfinishedfifthattheNCAAChampionship.Inaddi-tion, one of her athletes was selected to represent the National Team at the Nations Cup in Greece during the summer of 1998 and went on to make the2000OlympicTeam.PriortohertwoseasonsatWilliams,HornerledMinnesota’snovicesquadtotwoDadVailchampionships.Herteamsalsoclaimed four medals at Collegiate Nationals.

Following her collegiate career, Horner competed as a nationally com-petitive lightweight. She earned a berth on the U.S. National Lightweight team and competed in the World University Games. Her personal sweep and sculling honors and awards include: four U.S. Elite National Champi-onships and numerous Royal Canadian Henley, Head of the Charles and Olympic Festival medals.

At Minnesota, Horner earned her Bachelor of Science degree in chemi-cal engineering while pouring hours of energy into training as a rower.

Horner began her eight-year engineering career as an environmentalengineer with the U.S. Forest Service and later went on to be a consulting engineer. However, her love of rowing, along with her desire to teach that passion, drew her to coaching.

Tracey Tallman joined the Duke rowing staff as an assistant coach in August, 2013.Inherfirstyearwiththeprogram,Tallmanoversawtheprogram’s

developmentsquad,whichconsistedofvarsityandnovicestudent-athletes, and assist with recruiting.

A 2007 graduate of the University of Minnesota, Tallman comes to Duke from Central Florida where she served as assistant coach fortwoseasonsfrom2011-13.

Tallman held similar responsibilities at Central Florida. With the Knights,shecoachedthevarsityfourinherfirstspringtoathird-placerankingintheSouthRegionbytheNCAADivisionIRegionalPoll.

Tallman also was an assistant coach at Sacramento State from 2009-2011andatSt.Lawrencein2008and2009.InherfirstseasonatSacramentoState,sheguidedthefirst-ever

novice8tograndfinalsattheSanDiegoCrewClassic.Thefollowingyear she coached the varsity 4, which was composed of novice rowers, to gold at the WIRA Championship as well as the novice 8 tosilverbehindGonzaga.AtSt.Lawrence,sheguidedthewomen’steamtoback-to-back

DivisionIIINCAAChampionshipappearances,whichwerethefirstin school history. The two NCAA appearances followed consecutive Liberty League Championships and citations for the league’s Coaching Staff of the Year award.

Tallman competed with the University of Minnesota’s rowing team for four years, including three on the varsity squad.As asenior in 2007, she helped guide the Golden Gophers to the Big 10ChampionshipandtotheprogramsfirstNCAAChampionship,whereMinnesotafinishedsixth.

Tallman also helped Minnesota’s varsity four win the Big 10 Championshipasajuniorandtheschool’sfirstevergoldinavarsityevent at the conference championship. As a freshman she competed with the novice eight which won the league title, the same year she wasnamedmostvaluablerowerofthennovicesquad.

Kathryn Hagglund enters her fourth year as Duke’s assistant rowing coach and second as Duke’s varsity assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. Hagglund previously oversaw Duke’s novice programandassistedwithrecruitingstudent-athletes.HagglundhasoverseentheBlueDevils’back-to-backcampaigns

withanappearance in theCRCA/USRowingCoachesPoll.Shewas an integral part of Katie Dukovich’s ACC Freshman of the Year performance in 2013.Dukovich became the firstDuke rower toreceive the league’s top rookie honor. InHagglund’sfirstseasonatDuke,sheoversawanovicesquad

that captureda third-place finish in thenoviceeight at theACCChampionships.Fromherfirstnoviceteam,fiverowersjoinedthevarsity squad for the 2012-13 season, includingNicoleAntoine,Sophia Staal and Caroline Williams.

A native of London, Ontario, Hagglund came to Duke after spending time as a graduate assistant at her alma mater, the University of Louisville. Hagglund received her bachelor’s degree (’08) in Exercise Science with a minor in Community Health and later earnedhermaster’sdegree(’11)inExercisePhysiology.

A former standout for the Louisville rowing team, Hagglund was amemberofthesquadforfouryears,servingasteamcaptainfrom2005-2008.Duringhertenure,shewasnamedtotheCanAmMexJunior National Team, Selection Camp U23 Canadian National Team and was the 2007 Big East Champion in the Second Varsity Eight while helping the Cardinals’ program to a top national ranking.

Hagglund served as assistant men’s and women’s rowing coach atSt.LawrenceUniversityforthe2008-09season,whenshewasa member of the 2009 Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year after helping the Saints receive a bid to the 2009 NCAA Division III Championships. It was the second appearance in school history and Hagglundhelpedthesquadfinishseventhoverall.

In 2010, Hagglund decided to return to her alma mater to be a graduate assistant and to earn her master’s degree.

A year later, Hagglund was a member of the 2011 Big East Coaching Staff of the Year after guiding the Cardinals to a second placefinishinthethirdvarsityeightandsecondoverallasateamat the Big East Championships.

Hagglund currently resides in Durham, where she enjoys triathlons, hiking, traveling and baking.
