1. Designated Areas of Conservation Importance
Duich Salmon Farm is situated within Lochs Duich, Long and Alsh Special Areas of Conservation
SAC). The Lochs Duich, Long and Alsh SAC was designated for the protection of Reef habitat. An
assessment was carried out in 2011 to determine potential impacts resulting from the existing
salmon farm, and potential interactions with the qualifying features subject to an appropriate
assessment.
The development site also falls within the Lochs Duich, Long and Alsh Marine Protected Area which
was designated in 2014 to protect Flame Shell Beds & Burrowed Mud. The Data Confidence
Assessment written in support of the designation identifies that the known aggregations of Flame
Shell Beds are clumped at the mouth of Loch Alsh and that Burrowed Mud is widely present in Loch
Duich.
Marine Harvest ( Scotland) Limited ( MHS) proposes to modify the maximum biomass and the size of
the pens by replacing the authorised equipment with 12 pens of 120m circumference and operating
a maximum biomass of 2, 500t. The proposal retains the centre coordinates for each pen and
thereby limits the degree of change.
Following pre -application discussion with SEPA and Scottish Natural Heritage, the existing and
proposed footprints predicted by AutoDepomod are very similar ( Figures 1 to 8) and consequently
the proposed changes are not expected to introduce new areas of potential impact. On this basis,
potential impacts to protected features are not expected to be significant and no further assessment
is required in support of this application.
