From our Principal’s Desktop ……………

Welcome back to the new term. We have already had a range of great sporting results and significant events to start the term and some positive feedback from the end of last term.

Last week we farewelled Mr Calvin Reid who has retired after many years of dedicated service the majority spent at South Campus. Cal will be missed most of all for his skills in engaging a broad range of students but mostly for his caring nature and understanding of the importance of practical skills in life. Best wishes for your retirement Mr Reid.

Our school performed very well at the Dubbo Eisteddfod. The college band as I reported last term had a win in one section and runners up in the other. A range of individual performances have been rewarded in a range of ways included a large number of Good News Letters. Well done to all concerned and thank you to our Creative Arts staff for their skill and commitment.

The success for our sporting teams has continued. Our Senior league team won the Tom Kemp shield against Orange High to be crowned the Western Region Champi-ons. The Junior league team this week won through to the final sixteen of the State wide Buckley Shield with a win over Barrenjoey HS. Emma Blake and Savannah

Dimmock represented Western Region at the State Cross Country in Sydney. In what I think is a school first, Mr Bran-don’s class are now the Western Region Boccia Champions. We look for-ward to some more suc-cess soon. All students will have the opportunity to attend the next round of the Buckley Shield which is in Dubbo on Tuesday 6 August. Plac-es are limited so students are encouraged to return notes and money to re-

serve a spot.

Our school was the focus this week for a school-based program targeting practical strategies to address the is-sue of domestic violence. David Peachey and Jay Little presented an excellent program which was very well re-ceived by all of the boys involved. We hope to continue this partnership which has grown from the support of local league clubs to include school-based programs.

On Wednesday this week we held our annual NAIDOC Day. The day saw Basketball and Touch Football games between Delroy Campus and our students. The competi-tion was close and played with great spirit. A definite highlight was the performance by comedian Sean Chul-burra. He entertained and danced his way through a very amusing routine. I am sure he contributed to a day that all of our students will remember. My thanks go to Rod Ah See and Melissa Olsen for organising a great day.

A number of significant events are on the calendar for the next few weeks. These include:

The Year 6 to Year 7 transition evening to be held at the Senior Campus next Wednesday 31 July. The presentations will commence at 6pm. This will be followed by the Year 8 into Year 9 elec-tive selection information session commencing at 7.30pm.

Parent teacher evenings are set down for Years 7 and 8 on Wednesday the 4 September from 4 to 7pm and Years 9 and 10 on Tuesday 10 Septem-ber from 4 to 7pm.

A number of information letters are also included in this edition. The first is for a Dental Van visit on the 16

Sep-

tember. This service provides a free dental assessment to all students who return the paperwork which is included.

The second is an information brochure produced in com-munity languages about the Gonski Education Reforms.

Our next P&C meeting will be held on Monday 12 August from 7.30pm in the school library. Please feel welcome to join us.

Have a great week!

Mr D Thompson PRINCIPAL

We welcomed back David Peachey an ex student of Dub-bo South High, who with another ex NRL player Jay Little, conducted workshops with 40 boys in Yr 8, 9 and 10. Alt-hough it was exciting to have the local legend work with our students he came to deliver a serious message to the boys.

Boys completed workshops on positive relationships, heard messages from prominent NRL officials, players and coaches that had been affected by domestic violence and were educated on what actions they could take as young

men to maintain positive and respectful relationship. On a lighter note the visitors assisted the teacher’s team in a students vs. teachers touch football game. Although it was a close game the teachers won bragging rights with Ms Marshall scoring the winning try.

To conclude the day the students were taken through prac-

tical football drills that reinforced their understanding of

abuse of power and seeking help. Overall it was a suc-

cessful day that we hope will continue and become an an-

nual event.

Successful learning in dynamic, well managed classrooms

Mr Brandon’s class wins Western Region Boccia Finals at Canobolas High

Wow, wow, wow. I am so proud and pleased for the stu-dents in my class as we have been practicing for six months for the competition held at Canobolas Rural Technology High in Orange on the 24th June. The Spe-cial Education faculty purchased two indoor Boccia sets last year at a cost of $500 each, with the help of the PDHPE Faculty who contributed half the cost.

Boccia is a lot like lawn bowls; it is played over six ends and the team with their boccia (bowls) closet to the jack at the completion of an end win, with points accumulating over the six ends. The team with the most points at the end of the match wins.

With ten students on the South Campus team we changed our three players after each end. Normally a team would play the same players for several or all of the ends so the players can get a feel for the court and boc-cia. With the constant change of players plus the unfamil-iar boccia each player had to be on top of their game im-mediately. With one student with a sore shoulder on their preferred bowling arm and having to play with their other hand, with three students who had little experience and

having to learn a new skill on the day (kicking the boccia instead of throwing it) we certainly didn’t have it easy. The students didn’t bat an eyelid and soldiered on. South Campus played very well against Canobolas High in the first round match and won 8-1, in the second match we played Wellington High and won 14-0. In the final match of the day South Campus lost to Mudgee 4-3. South Campus won the day on a count back, as Mudgee had also lost a match.

The students were very excited to hear they had won as they (and I) were unaware of the count back system and thought we had missed out with our loss to Mudgee in the final. So what does this all mean for the students? We are now in the State Boccia Finals to be held in Sydney on the 4 September.

School community engaged in lifelong learning

Term 3 26 July 2013

The Careers team hit the ground running in Term 3. In week 1 we delivered information sessions to all our year 10 students regarding Vocation Education Training (VET) that is available to them at Senior Campus. The sessions included information delivered by head teachers from each faculty, giving the students an overview of the sub-jects that are available to them, what they are about and the expectations required with these subjects. We also had a session delivered from the careers team giving students information about the Vocation Education Train-ing (VET) courses that are delivered through Senior Campus. These subjects offer students the opportunity to gain a qualification on top of their HSC. Anne Shortis from TAFE delivered information about the TAFE deliv-ered VET courses (TVET). This is where the students have the opportunity to attend TAFE to receive qualifica-tions in a variety of areas while they study for their HSC. Careers also delivered an information evening to parents 17 July between 6.00pm and 7.00pm. This gave parents the opportunity to hear about the subjects that are offered to students. The evening was very successful with many parents attending and having the opportunity to talk to teachers and career staff in regards to the subject selec-tions that are available.

Tafe Open Day was held Friday 19 July from 9 – 11:30 am. All year 10 had the opportunity to attend. There were lots of things for the students to look at and see first-hand what the TAFE subjects are about.

Also a reminder to all year 10 students that your subject selection sheets are due in on 6 August along with application forms for any TAFE courses that you wish to

enrol in. So don’t forget to fill these in and get them signed by parents/carers before this date. Year 10 stu-dents will also have the opportunity to talk to career advi-sors during this hand in period.

The iTrack program will continue to run through the Smith Family again this Term. The students are enjoying the discussions that are being held each Friday with their mentors. This program will finish at the end of this Term and has proven to be very successful. JOBS EXPO and TRY A TRADE ROAD SHOW A Regional team of experts is planning a Jobs Expo and Try A Trade Road Show for students attending Dubbo College Junior Campuses. On 31 July Year 10 will travel to the Senior College at 9.30am – 10.30am. It will be a one stop shop on a broad range of Careers available to young people transitioning into the workforce. Year 9 stu-dents will have the option to attend the TRY A TRADE Van as part of this expo on August 1 from 9.30am – 10.30am.

I invite all students at South Campus to come and dis-cuss your future plans with me. I am at the South Cam-pus Mondays and Fridays and my door is open at recess and lunch on both these days. I also have an appoint-ment book that is left at the front office for students to write their names in and I will contact them when I am next at South Campus. I am also contactable through email at [email protected]. Feel free to email me anytime and I will respond to your emails promptly.

Welcome back to another term! PDHPE assessments this term are in class based assessments. Stu-dents will be given scaffolded assignment templates which will assist them to structure their response. Students will also be given the opportunity to mark their own work using explicit marking criteria’s, re-ceive individualised feedback from their teacher and then have the opportunity to make changes. It is hoped that this will assist all students in improving their skills in utilising verbs to respond to assessment questions as well as their assessment results.
