Manntech statement for our Business Partners and Customers regarding theaccident in Dubai on 30th November 2010
On Tuesday evening, 30th November 2010 we received the following news from Dubai:
Two facade workers of Indian nationality, whilst working at a considerable height on the exteriorfagade of the Burj Dubai Plot 12 building for the firm Multiform, tragically fell to their deaths. This greatly shocked us and we feel the deepest sympathy and sorrow for the workers and theirfamilies.
Manntech immediately sent a third party inspector to Dubai GÜD. Presently, a detailed investi-gation is ongoing. However, we would like to give all our business partners and customers theinformation we do have regarding this situation in Dubai and how we are proceeding.
It will take some time to provide final clarification of the full causes of this incident. The chain ofparties involved is very long and includes the BMU manufacturer (Manntech), one of our special-ist suppliers (hydraulic cylinders), our local partner, the customer, the company operating theBMU and local authorities.
We have delivered a total of four static crane-type BMUs to the Burj Dubai Plots 12 and 13. EachBMU is equipped with a telescopic mast and telescopic jib (a.k.a. boom or arm). These machineshave been in use since August 2010 for the purposes of facade installation at the customer's re-quest. Manntech's local partner handed over the machines for temporary use during the construc-tion phase, and with explicit operating restrictions regarding the use of the BMUs for the proposed
construction application.
Initial information received from the site is that one BMU had a failure within an already replacedhydraulic cylinder operating the telescopic mast. We still have to establish the fulI circumstancesleading up to this component failure. However, it resulted in the telescopic mast suddenly retract-ing vertically into itself, causing the jib to drop by approximately 3 meters.

The telescopic jib was fully telescoped out and at its maximum reach dimension of 20 meters.
The telescopic jib absorbed the impact forces and remained in place. However the slewing head
connection at the end of the jib appears to have failed as the vertical movement of the combined
inner telescoping mast, telescoping jib, counterweight, slewing head and gondola came to an in-stant stop by hitting the outer telescoping mast and main frame of the BMU.
As a precautionary measure, all BMU's with double action cylinders from the same specialist sup-
plier will be taken out of service until the final results of the investigation and thorough examina-
tion are received. This will be carried out by an independent institute as soon as we receive fullclearance to proceed from the local authorities.
There are just two further installations worldwide where components from the same specialistsupplier have been used in the BMU design and production. No BMUs supplied to your market
include components from this specialist supplier.
The BMUs MANNTECH, (formerly Mannesmann) products are very robust and are designed and
constructed according to all valid Industry Standards (Machinery Directive, harmonized European
Standard Norms e.g. EN 1808, local standards if requested) and are certified by the German Tech-nical Supervision Authority according to DIN/EN/ISO 9001. An immediate review of all our doc-
uments (type testing documents, structural analysis, calculations, purchasing documents, workshop test report) showed no breaches of the relevant standards and codes. Each Manntech Machineis fully engineered and assembled in our factory, then tested in accordance with Manntech ISOtesting procedure. After testing it is disassembled for delivery to site.
We are still very proud of our company's continuous safety record of almost 60 years of age. Priorto this accident we have supplied almost 8,000 fagade access systems all over the world, and have
no record of such an incident with one of our BMUs. We credit this safety record to our interna-
tionally recognized approach to high quality product design and manufacturing standards.
Please be assured that whatever circumstances may be established following the investigation ofthis incident, we remain highly motivated and committed to our product quality and safety aware-
ness. We will continue to further improve and optimize our standards in design, safety and qualityas we have been doing for many years.
We look forward to receiving your continued trust and ongoing successful cooperation and sup-
