WE BEGIN WITHLOVE AND BEAUTY

We can end up anywhere, but we can only begin here: a woman and her child.

From Bellini’s Virgin and Child of the Italian Renaissance to Utamaro's 18th century Japanese print celebrating maternal connection, we can always be reminded that even though centuries and continents may separate us, we all begin at the same point. Explore more mysteries of our common consciousness throughout the museum’s twelve chapters.

HOT, HOT, HOT…Yes, it´s that time of the year again. It is the hot months and everybody is chasing for some relief from the scorching sun. The famous song writer Noël Coward once wrote “Only mad dogs and Englishmen” satirising the un-willingness of English and European people to adopt the custom of taking a siesta during the heat of the day in tropical climates. This is still much a fact. Coming from Europe and living in Dubai I can see both sides of the argument. In northern Europe the saying is “summer is the best day of the year” because summer is very unpredictable and if the temperature struggles to reach the 20 degree mark you basically plan your activities day to day. The weather today doesn´t predict the weather to-morrow. So people don´t make any long term plans for holiday och vacation just because they might pick their three weeks vacation when it is barely 13 degrees and rainy all the time.

So understanding this I am not surprised that Europeans love to visit places like Dubai

to get some sun and likable temperatures. And at the same time get a better understanding of the amazing culture in the region. Food, mu-sic, sports, shopping are favourites amongst visitors alike. Going to one of the many amaz-ing beaches or just hanging out at the pool is also very relaxing.

The last years visitors has also found new ways to experience the locations they visit. Not following the beaten track of millions before them but venturing out on their own to explore more genuine places and interact with the locals. And this is perfect for Dubai since most people are open and welcoming to visitors. Striking up a casual conversation with the locals can often lead to new and great friendships that no catalogue can offer.#

The project aims to implement a frame, which uniquely highlights the Dubai landmarks. It forms an aesthetic and architectural landmark that creates a bridge between the past and the present, to be an important attraction point for tourist visitors and residents alike. It is in the form of a frame, with two towers of height 150 meters that are connected by a 93 meter bridge at the top of the towers. The space be-tween the towers forms a pretty clear view for the city from a high altitude. The bridge serves as an observatory providing uninterrupted views of “Old Dubai” to the north, and “New Dubai” to the south.

The concept reflects a journey through time, starting at the mezzanine level, where visitors enter into an immersive experience representing the Past history. Projections, mist effects, smells, and motion create the im-mersive mood setting of the space. The Past Gallery embodies the idea of the project and tells the story of the evolution of the city and its past, and shows the old city using the most new and updated means of presentation that contributes to the creation of a favorable envi-ronment that develops and comprehends the renaissance taking place in Dubai.

After that, the visitors are directed to the second experience on the Sky deck level that represents the Present of Dubai. The visitors will be experiencing uninterrupted views

of Dubai from all sides. “Old Dubai” to the north, and “New Dubai” to the south. This is supported by interactive applications such as augmented reality activated screens, whereby the visitor can identify different buildings and landmarks, by exploring interesting facts or observing buildings and landmarks in third dimension.

Other technologies are used to represent different aspects of the present Dubai, such as architecture, economy and infrastructure.

The next experience is on the other side of the mezzanine level and it represents the Future of Dubai. The concept of this gallery is to depict Dubai 50 years from now into the fu-ture by creating a virtual metropolis through interactive projections and virtual reality technology.

The visitors will exit the elevator onto the mezzanine floor to pass through a vortex tunnel with special lights and sound effects. The idea is to create an illusion of time travel through a warp vortex and arriving into the city 50 years ahead.

An immersive ‘Virtual Metropolis’ experi-ence is created on the walls by means of in-teractive projections, light and sound to create the city of the future. The scenes would depict the city’s evolution after 50 years, new pro-jects, how people would travel, live etc.#

The latest and most fabulous eye catching landmark in Dubai is The Frame. Dubai already hosts some of the world´s most spectacular buildings like Burj Khalifa, Burj al Arab, Museum of the Future and so on. When other cities hesitate to follow through with the vision of creating both vibrant and fascinating city buildings, Dubai goes the opposite way and creates modern building marvels of the 21st century and the Frame is just such a project.

OLD NEW

FRAMING

& THE DUBAI FRAME • The frame measures 150

metres high and 93 metres wide.

• ◆The two towers are connected by a 100-square- metre bridge, which has a 25-square-metre glass panel in the middle.

• ◆It is designed by award- winning architect Fernando Donis, who also designed Dubai’s Porsche Design Towers, and the Dubai Renaissance Tower.

• ◆There is a museum on the ground floor that will showcase Dubai’s transfor-mation from fishing village to metropolis.

• ◆It is predicted the frame will become a major tourist destination in the city, like the Burj Khalifa and the Burj Al Arab.

A great way to sample the highlights is with their seafood and crab sharing platter, which includes cold king crab, poached jumbo shrimp, crab claws, potted crab, and a very interesting crab doughnut (that’s sweet doughnut topped with crab). TIME IS ON HIS SIDE

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH CLAES LUNDIN

Nothing tells the time and style of a gentleman or lady than the time piece they wear on their wrist. It can be a discrete Audemars Piguet, a sporty Breitling, a very flashy diamond stud-ded Rolex or a timeless Patek Philippe. All with a hefty price tag even for the entry mod-els. Spending a lot of money for something that basically only tells you what time of day it is is a personal choice but one thing is for sure; no matter how much the watch costs you still can´t buy time, right. And also, if you want to have a piece for daily use and an extra for the dress up occasion, you have to invest money in it. Big money.

Swedish born, Hong Kong based design-er and businessman Claes Lundin is truly a watch aficionado. And if you are really serious about it you get your own brand. So Claes did. He founded, created and designed his first line of extremely good looking wrist watches, with a twist.

–Time is more than minutes, hours or sec-onds on our dials, he says. Time is about seiz-ing the moment and celebrating life through actions that matter. We build our memories now. We live connected to the present and to the people around us because no matter how different we are, we are all united. Time unites us even when we are in different time zones and speak different languages. Our vibrant hearts and love for life are the elements that connect us.

–My brand, Time&Company, is about those who live their life to the fullest, doing what fulfils and inspires them the most. It’s about those who act with enthusiasm, those who inspire others to make this world an amazing place. We create timepieces and ac-cessories for free spirits, trailblazers, forward thinkers and adventurers. People like you. And even in those moments when standing out or standing up for what you believe in can sometimes make you feel alone, we are here to remind you that you are part of something big. You are part of a vibrant community that’s Time&Company.

ARM CANDYClaes Lundin continues;–We’ve put a lot of thought and care into every detail of what we do. Our watches cele-brate bold minimalism for those who dare to dream, do, create and explore, as we want to be alongside our watch-wearers as they take on the world. Our products represent differ-ent voices and individual perspectives united by a mindset that’s fearless, hopeful, positive. Watches that look slick on the wrist seal the deal.

WATCH THISOur mission is to match your mindset while you make the most of your life and seize every new, exciting experience. Those like you in-

spire us to constantly build fresh, new collec-tions, so watch this space. As you know, the richest life comes down to the time you have and it’s about the jump you take in every new experience, while being in the right company.#

“Time is about seizing the

moment and celebrating life

through actions that matter. ”

While plenty of interrupted sunshine filters through the surround-ing towers, after sunset is the ideal time to dive into the water and take in the twinkling lights of passing dhow boats in the harbour below, and the bustle of the Marina’s energetic nightlife.

CONRAD DUBAIResort meets rooftop in the Conrad’s Purobeach urban oasis. Hidden from busy Sheikh Zayed Road thanks to lush greenery and tasteful canopies, this collection of pools is perfect for all-day lounging and family fun. FOUR POINTS BY SHERATON SHEIKH ZAYED ROADWhile it is shallow, this pool makes up for its lack of depth with fantastic city-to-bay views, as seen from an incredible 43 floors up. During the day, light snacks are served right to your sun lounge, with the tempo upping to become a chic bar by night, fre-quented by regulars looking to dance the day off. Perfect for night crawlers who is after a late night dip, the pool and bar are both open until 2am.

INTERCONTINENTAL DUBAI FESTIVAL CITYGuests can keep tabs on the comings and goings of Old Town’s traditional dhows thanks to the Inter-Continental’s Dubai Creek vantage point. While the open-air pool will keep you cool, it’s the transpar-ent glass tank that hangs out from the side of the building that will take your breath away. Hanging 25 metres up in the air, swimmers can take in the scen-ery below, while unsuspected passerbys beneath can check out your backstroke.#

Eid Al Adha is one of the biggest dates in the Islamic calendar, and one of the holiest celebra-tions. The expression translates as ‘festival of the sacrifice,’ and it marks the end of the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca. Many people celebrate Eid Al Adha by getting together with friends and family, as well as giving money and food to those less fortunate. Every year, Dubai comes to life during the four-day festival. The malls are packed, cinema seats are scarce, taxis are hard to come by and restaurants boast long queues throughout the holiday. On top of that, the city comes to life with exciting activities, traditional dance performances, live music, fireworks and special shows in all the major public spaces across Dubai. The exact dates are subject to the moon sighting closer to the holiday.#

During the holiest festival in Dubai most muslims tend to spend most of the first day of Eid at home or at the home of friends or family. During the following two days Dubai comes alive as the city’s residents go out and celebrate.

In consonance with the charming ambience and unique heritage of the city of Liwa, also known as the Gate of the Empty Quarter, in Al Dhafra region in Abu Dhabi, the Cultural Programmes and Heritage Festivals Committee, is organising the unique Liwa Date Festival under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs.

The festival pursues the Committee’s strategy, inspired by the vision of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, of preserving and sustaining authentic Emirati heritage, specifically the country’s palm trees and Ratab (half-ripe dates). For centuries, palm trees and Ratab have been an integral part of Emirati society and its deep-rooted traditions. Hence, the festival is a reflection of our wise leadership’s efforts to pay tribute to these living symbols of the past’s authenticity, the present’s prosperity and the future’s promise.

The festival will feature various internationally acclaimed Emirati heritage activities and competitions that have been extremely popular in past editions. Today, the Liwa Date Festival is widely recognised as a unique gathering for those passionate about the role of palm trees and Ratab, including individuals and companies. The Liwa Date Festival is also a great opportunity to learn about Emirati customs and traditions and to discover local industries and handicraft products. Practiced for thousands of years, the sport of falconry provides a proud link to a he-ritage that embodies nobility, courage and conservation

SPORT OF THE SKIES

For 4,000 years, Bedouin in the United Arab Emirates and wider Arabian Penin-sula practiced falconry as an important form of hunting in a resource-scarce land. Its role in society, however, has changed over time, and today it is one of the UAE’s most honoured tradition-al sports.

Falconry’s revered status derives from the sense of courage, honour and nobility, prized traditional Arab values, that are associated with the sport, as well as its links to nature conservation, respect for animals and the comradery among falcon-ers.

“Falconry allows our children to enjoy the spell of the desert, imbuing them with the virtues of pa-tience and fortitude, willpower and companionship, values that are just as important today, as they have been for generations,” says His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Emirates Falconers’ Club.#

ADVENTURE IN NATURE

Photo: Tee & Putt Mini Golf

The big boys and girls hit the fairway in grand style and peg up on the meticulously maintanined grass lawns of the golf courses all over the world. Some-times it´s just for fun but in most cases the game of golf is a game of great prestige and high stakes. Why not try mini golf instead when you want to gather your friends and family for a game of fun and laugh-ter.

The Tee & Putt Company has two indoor venues, one in WAFI Mall in Dubai and one in Dalma Mall in Abu Dhabi. It is a lot of fun and a great thing to do for all ages. One of their specialities is a glow-in-the-dark minigolf where you can experience a whole new level of challenges on the glowing courses.

For the more adventurous crowd you can also experience a puzzle game including an escape room where you have to put clues together to be able to go on to minigolf later. It´s up to you and your team to crack these cryptic puzzles and challenges and work together to solve the case.#

MINI GOLF

Packed with courts, pitches, sporting leagues and tournaments, it allows enthusiasts as well as spectators to get some hard core sporting action in a sun-free and climate controlled environment.

In addition to the regular football, basketball, rugby, tennis, bad-minton, squash, skateboard, cricket and table tennis camps, the Ninja Warriors Challenge made an entry last year, an exciting 14-element obstacle course that tests participants’ skills and fitness levels. Padel was also a new addition last season, a cross between regular tennis and squash, played in a glass court with its own rules and point system. One more added feature in 2017 was the popular Trampoline Park, custom-built in the Netherlands, taking fun activity to an all new high,

bouncing around and twirling if you dare.Parents can rest assured knowing that the summer months will

offer great academies for children of all ages in a safe environment with expert coaches and trainers. With a range of activities for all skill set and all age groups, there’s no reason not to keep the kids active. With enough activities for parents, Dubai Sports World really is a family des-tination also.#

Discover old Dubai in the city’s top souks. Lavish gold jewellery, hand-woven fabrics, traditional oud fragrances and cheap knickknacks – you’ll find it all in the exciting souks of Dubai. While Dubai’s reputation is as a thriving modern city, traditional Arabian markets are still a crucial part of daily life and trade. A wander through one of the city’s bustling souks is an essential experience for both visitors and locals.

SOUKSOUR FAVOURITE...

GOLD SOUK54 Al Khor St | Deira, near Gold Center

Building, Dubai

Fittingly for Dubai, “the city of gold”, the Gold Souk is a must-see for serious precious metal traders, couples looking for a statement jewellery piece, or visitors hunting for that special memento of their Dubai stay. The wide passageways are alive with tradesmen and artists trained in the craft of designing jewellery, from bespoke pieces and alluring Arabic designs with prices that aren’t set in stone.

SPICE SOUKSikkat Al Khail Road | Al Ras, Dubai

A close neighbour to the Gold Souk, follow your nose to the Spice Souk to be instantly transported to the hustle and bustle of a vibrant trading floor. With top chefs, home cooks and savvy expats all swearing by their personal picks among the Spice Souk’s colourful sacks of spices, herbs, rice and fruit, the market hall is a must-visit for those wanting to explore Dubai’s exotic side. Score high-quality saffron strands at local prices, taste fresh A-grade and sun dried organic dates and stock up on exotic spices, dried fruits, candied nuts, and locally-blended teas. You are sure to discover a new flavour – and yes, you can sample before you buy.

PERFUME SOUKSikkat al Khali Road, Dubai

Obsessed by scent? Follow the road up from the Gold and Spice Souks, and you’ll find yourself in Deira’s Perfume Souk on Sikkat Al Khali Street. Dealing in everything scented, from pure perfume to essential oils, incense sticks and the exotic traditional oud, the traditional trading spot has beautiful-ly-fragranced options for all. Buy rich oils in bulk, stored in wholesale-sized flagons, or opt for the more portable ornate vials designed for those who like to dab perfume on pulse points. Ask for a crash-course in oud - many vendors will be proud to explain the diffe-rences in this ancient fragrant resin. Have a personal fragrance created and bottled by experienced perfumers.

TEXTILE SOUK57 Ali Bin Abi Talib Street, Dubai

On the Bur Dubai side of the Creek you’ll discover the colourful Textile Souk. A favou-rite haunt of the city’s in-demand tailors and emerging fashion designers, the Souk’s vast array of shops are crowded with rolls of fa-brics, including fine silks, airy cottons, exotic palm frond weaves, and dazzling sari fabrics. Choose from your favourite materials and pop into one of the surrounding tailors to be measured for a dress, abaya (traditional wo-menswear), kandoura (traditional menswear) or suit made to your design. Most can turn around orders in mere days.

SOUK MADINATAl Sufouh Road, Dubai

Nestled between the five-star Mina A’Salam and Al Qasr hotels, Souk Madinat Jumeirah is for those who want to skip the haggling but enjoy the thrill of shopping souk-style. Wan-der the labyrinth of narrow lanes in search of fun souvenirs, fine art and sculptures, local and international design houses, and take in a show at the atmospheric Madinat Theatre. There’s an array of restaurants to choose from any time of day, with visitors able to dine in Levant cafes or fine-dining restaurants - many with front-row views of the waterways that meander through the complex. Comple-te your visit with a traditional abra ride and drink in the views of the icon Burj Al Arab.

SOUK AL BAHARSheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard,

Downtown Dubai

Just a short and scenic stroll over the foot-bridge that arches across Burj Lake at the foot of the towering Burj Khalifa and beside The Dubai Mall, Souk Al Bahar is a modern take on a traditional Arabian marketplace. Here, you can stock up on Bateel dates, incense cones, jewellery, abayas, brass lamps, and fresh Arabic pastries studded with nuts and drizzled with honey. Upstairs, with its wi-de-slung windows, is one of the best vantage points from which to enjoy a meal while watching the evening light shows at The Dubai Fountain.
