Very Impotent poshYou need a certain state of mind to write an Editor’s Letter, one of the best is a mix of rage, impatience and frustration - words just float out of your mind.

What really breaks my balls is the tendency of venues to cre-ate more and more VIP areas. Sometimes i feel like i am in India with its castes visiting a venue that is supposed to make all people happy, not just the one’s who can afford it.

It is no real fun to pay 40 Euros for a water (10), a beer (12) and a longdrink (18) just because it is like it is. The other day i went to the opening of Plan Be, finding a price range that is most fair - 2,50 for a water, 5 for a beer or a shot and 7,50 for a longdrink. Some would say this is incredibly cheap but i can tell you the margin is still huge compared to the prices you pay at a wholesaler in huge quantities. And pretending the prices are so high for educational reasons because peo-ple drink less alcohol is absolute bullshit, it is fruit of sheer greed. I mean, 10 Euros for a water means a lot of people hav-ing to work almost 2 hours to afford one!

I do not say that all have to lower the prices, if anybody is happy to pay a fortune for a few drinks or an overpriced din-ner then feel free to do so if it makes you feel better because you can afford it, but if all go in the same direction we are in deep trouble. Ibiza is a bubble in our ‘I can’t stand the word’ crisis that is crushing our economies all over the globe, but this does not give us the right to steal from the people that feed us. It is like bucking the branch you are sitting on think-ing you get away with it. Why not making different prices, one for the VIPs in their areas and a decent one for the ones that come to just party? Maybe because then all would go to the cheaper bar??

In times when ‘second hand’ or ‘used’ is called ‘vintage’ to make it sound better we should consider giving everybody the chance to have a good time, be them VIPs or ordinary club-bers.

The other day i read that a russian oligarch, the one who invented the russian facebook called ‘VKontakte’, threw handmade paper planes made of banknotes out of his office window to see how people down on the street would fight to get one. In times where 1% of the world’s population owns 99% of all money it is just not right to take the piss out of the ones that finance your fortune, and converting a party into a showdown of ‘who can spend more money’ is exactly the same thing- it just looks different.

... BUSINESS HIppIES

‘Good food needs no show only unforgettable taste and a little magic.’ says Sina Engel with a relaxed smile in her face.

Talking about her passion “food” that seems to be her favorite thing it is easy to understand her new business named “Sina Engel Catering” was launched successfully beginning 2012. While sitting in her beautiful working space, she tells me “her story” of making a living in Ibiza. or what she calls a “magic.happy.good.life.” Which is when things are not planned they become best. Coming to enjoy her holiday in 2009, she fell in love with the host of her holiday apartment. Just a detail that today seems normal for both of them but still is funny: They come from the same town - and had never met before that summer. Shortly after that, Sina decided to move to Ibiza. With several completed studies in Germany, Ibiza gave her creative mind the chance to reveal the true potential she has. As cooking was one of her biggest passions in life, she converted this passion into a pro-fession. It was rafael, today her husband, formerly her host, who enlisted her secretly in a popular German TV show ‘das perfekte dinner’ - the perfect diner. When the invitation came in, Sina was highly motivated; even though she felt a bit nervous she finally accepted and won the challenge.

‘There is no big secret behind it, I use local natural ingredients and put all my effort in combining them with love and dedica-tion.’

rafael, co-founder of Klixx in San rafael is another exam-ple of unplanned steps that lead in the right direction. Putting together, a road trip to Portugal without ever reaching the des-tination with his best friend oliver and their skills, effort & long history is the result is what Klixx is today: A successful agency for web & graphic design with an international clientele. 10 years later - oliver is back in Germany now and rafael still in Ibiza - thanks to today s technology Klixx works with a creative team in Ibiza inspired by the sun and nature and an engineering team in Wiesbaden, Germany, fully dedicated to the programming of high end & state of the art websites. ‘Sometimes when i sit in our office enjoying the incredible views, i can’t even believe that this is a so called “office”. For almost 10 years i actually EnJoY coming to work’ says rafael with a smile. Their big space inspired them to give other creatives, promotors and smaller companies an area where they to synergize their crea-tivity. They brought the idea of co-working spaces to the island of Ibiza, a common thing in bigger cities. It is now a place with a creative atmosphere offering rental working spaces.

Without expecting it Sina and rafael’s life seems to have become a dream come true. It developed naturally and Sina gave birth to their daughter noomi. She states ‘I always wanted to live by the sea with my husband, form a family, have a dog and drive a 4x4.’

As simple as this, both really deserve what they got because it is the fruit of their hard work and dedication. Ibiza is their happy place.Talking about Ibiza we come to the point where we all agree that, with the financial crash threatening us, we really have a very good chance to convert it into a microcosm where people can live together and share the island’s richness in resources as there is enough for all of us. rafael believes that at this point there is no VIP, just us, all together on the world’s most beautiful island.’ And so do we ;)

... HIppIES DE NEGOCIO

to ‘BreaK-yoUr-Fast’ in Ibiza town you have a variety of options, we recommend the Croissant Show, from 07:30 on you can get your caffeine dose and the finest patisseries… In Sunset Café not only can you have a relaxed coffee, juice or whatever, you can also choose from pizzas, salads and other delicatessen - We are family... on the backside, facing the old town wall, you will find Out of Time People, not just breakfast but a real spiritual encounter! If you want to have a good valued and filling break-fast you can go to Buenissimo in Vara de rey, always packed and just as good! You’re staying somewhere outside Ibiza town? In Jesus you have to try the Bon Lloc or the San Francisco on the road to Talamanca on the left side. Cana negreta on the road to Sta. Eulalia offers you Bar Toni, very reasonable prices! In Sta. Eulalia you should visit the Croissant Show or the El Puntal in the Puerto deportivo, or the Café Sidney inside the port of Eulalia. San Carlos hosts the classic Bar Anita, THE reference for break-fast, bocadillos, tapas etc… San Juan is just as original, there the place is called Vista Alegre, or try Eco with their new fantas-tic restaurant. In San Lorenzo La Paloma is where you should go, not just good breakfast but a fantastic brunch and buffet as well! In San Miguel you have to visit the ‘Café of the false teeth’ in the market place, coffee for 1 Euro! Sta. Gertrudis, still my favour-ite, offers savoury breakfasts from 08.00h at Can Partit or fancy Musset, good breakfast, breads and midday menus are back. If you stay in San Antonio you should visit the very end of the port, there you find the Café des Port, best food at best prices. or try Kumharas in the west end, they stay open the whole day, with

Page 14: dub magazine ibiza - 07.2012

breakfast, lunch, exotic dinner and unique Ibiza Spirit. In San rafael you should try the Bar Cruce, THE place for a strong cof-fee and more. Sta. Ines offers the famous Bar Cosmi, not just for Breakfast.

You Broke-your-fast? Then let’s go and get some sun. If you are into sunbathing be very very careful, don’t stay too long, have a carrot juice before or use natural sun protection, if not your holi-day can become a nightmare! In Salinas my first choice was, is and will always be Sa Trinxa, unique crowd, balearic beats and high quality food… and try the Sangria! Jockey Club, the adjacent Malibu and Guaraná are beautiful spots as well. In Es Cavallet, on the other side of Sali-nas, you can find the refurbished Es Cavallet Chiringuito or the Chiringuay further down the beach, the latter is home to the more colourful crowd - a dream! In Playa d’en Bossa you find hot spots in its true sense, starting with Delano - fashiona-ble music, cocktails and more - La Plage by l’Elephant is just as cool and the überstylish Ushuaia Beach Hotel is very VIP… Nas-sau Beach is high quality service at a high price – but worth it. on the very end you find Coco Beach – my tip is the Currywurst! And Bora Bora just goes on and on and on…! Cala Nova behind Es Canar is a gorgeous beach to relax and sunbath. If you like to sunbath and party have a look as well on the Club Punta Arabi in Es Canar, wednesdays the guys from Next Wave have an incred-ible line-up, as well as Cristian Vivano on sundays. Chirincana in Es Canar is the best spot to do some water-sports in a most cool surrounding - our tip! Enough tourists? Cala d’Hort offers the view to the legendary Es Vedra, 360 meters of magnetic rock – a must. Sa Caleta is a dream for bathing, as is Es Codolar behind the airport with the Macao Café on the rocks, situated on a peb-ble beach with crystal clear water – and dogs are welcome! Cala Jondal presents Yemanja and Tropicana for food, Blue Marlin for drinks - very posh and perfect to spot, see and be seen. San Antonio is massive, but you have to know where to go. A must is still Café del Mar or the Golden Buddha round the corner, not to forget Kumharas (once more), truly the best sunsets, a place you cannot miss to find the authentic Ibiza. Cala Moli is a secret tip, after San Antonio head south, follow the signs, it is worth the search! Cala Xarraca high up in the north is a must-see as well, or Cala Benirras next to San Miguel, once home to the legend-ary drum festival… Aguas Blancas on the way to San Vicente is a perfect spot to take a dip, clear water and relatively few people. one real secret tip is the El Bigote in the Cala Mastella (after San Carlos head north and follow the signs), the best seafood of your life. Between Sta. Eulalia and Jesus comes Cala Llonga, follow the signs to Amante, a hidden spot surrounded by rocks, a per-fect restaurant and perfect to relax and chill… We do not forget s’Estanyol, go half way from Jesus to Talamanca, take a left up the mountain and then follow the sign down to the beach, a spot to disconnect and recharge your batteries with coolest beats.

shoppInG? For sure, you are on holiday! The price range is enormous, but all named here are worth a visit: Las Dalias just before San Carlos is home to the one and only Hippie market, here everybody finds something really original. For leather you should go to Darío Bomé in San Miguel, see Manfred Postel’s shop in Sta. Ines or visit Te Cuero in Sta. Gertrudis. For souve-nirs and fashion go to Histericcompliments on Vara de rey. You can find all sport brands cheap in La Sirena, there are lots on

the island. You have to visit the old town of Ibiza, this is the real deal, you just have to look around! Hippychic is another secret tip; you can find it in three places: c/Ses Figueres in Talamanca, Cala Vadella and the dalt Villa in c/ Santa Cruz. In Fashion Pirate on the Vara de rey you can get quality fashion for a reasonable price, as well as in the Elements from Ibiza shop just next door. 50 meters to the right you find Uma y Leopold, designer fashion for the stylish! A complete different experience is the Vicente Ganesh in the Marina, vintage second hand designer clothings and incredible accessoires are just a few things to explore. The price spiral in Ibiza is very widespread, there are no limits. Possi-bilities for extreme shopping are e.g. Heaven in Marina Botafoch, the NIC in Vara de rey, or EGB in c/ Bartolome rosello.

hUnGer... a basic need, and here in Ibiza you should pay special attention to it, because the nights are very exhausting. There are so many incredibly good restaurants we can not men-tion because of the lack of space, but here are some of the best ones: Power food is available in various places such as Es Tap Nou in the center of Ibiza, fresh veggies and fruits become your juice or salad of the day. next alternative is Pasión in Playa d’en Bossa, homemade dishes and juices of all kind will refill your batteries. Cheap, good, fresh and fast? Comida San Juan and Los Pasajeros in Ibiza Town next to the Plaça del Parque. The Bistro Talamanca offers best tapas for reasonable prices. Fresh fish? Hotel La Marina in the port. High quality french and international food? Pastis on the backside of the Plaça del Parque - a must. Tomato Rojo in Ibiza is best for Pizzas and rosticceria. Want some real Indian food? Try the Ancient People on the Avenida España, best food for best price, and the dahl is a must! Thai fusion food is available at Bambuddha Grove on the road to San Juan or at the Banyan Palace on the San José – San An road. Last but noT least try Casa Thai 2 on Avda. Isidoro Macabich/San Antonio – my per-sonal fave, as well as Chang Mai in Sta. Eulalia on a hidden road next to the Puerto deportivo. Meat? Es Canto in Sta. Gertrudis for the best beefsteak. Best Jamon Serrano-Bocadillo? Bar Costa in Sta. Gertrudis. The s’Altra Banda, also in Sta. Gertrudis, offers best fusion food. German food by the seaside? Café Sydney in Marina Botafoch is a classic for all lovers, including dJs every day as well.La Luna Nell’ Orto in San Miguel is one of the most authentic res-taurants of all times. It is situated where the first hippie market in Ibiza used to be held! In Sta. Eulalia we recommend SomiArt by Foc y Fum on the esplanade, not just perfect food but perfor-mances in a special surrounding – a must. Casa Colonial on the road to Sta. Eulalia is a real escape in another world, best fusion food and service! In Km5 on the road to San Jose you can have fantastic meat in a unique atmosphere, a real trip. A great escape is the BHS (BoutiqueHotelSalinas) just after the roundabout of Salinas, high-quality tasty food in a beautiful setting, and if you can’t drive afterwards you got a room offered for 40 euros, if available – killer! The Es Tanco in San rafael serves the best ‘Entraña’ (Argentinean cut of meat) on the island. If you want to eat a rEAL chicken you have to go to Can Balafia on the road to San Juan, you’ve never tried one like this before, all homemade, from the potatoes over their very own chicken to their Hierbas. In San Antonio we have to mention Kumharas again and again, finest fusion food flavoured with easy beats. They run as well another restaurant called Mumak with mediter-rasian food and Wok to take away in Playa d’en Bossa. Sta. Eulalia

tIme to Go to Bed... Cheap and good is the Casa Hues-pedes in Ibiza - Vara de rey, a secret spot is Pepita’s in Salinas, talking about Salinas you have to turn into BHS (BoutiqueHotel-Salinas) hosted by Anita, düsi and dave Philipps, best food and 11 selected rooms, incredible cocktails and a supernice lounge – our tip!

a tomar eL soL!

¡Sal a encontrarla tu mismo!

¿FaLta aLGo?

‘ONCE IN THE EaRLy DayS pEOpLE COULD GaTHER TOGETHER IN a pEaCEfUL way TO CELEBRaTE THE JOy Of LIfE aND THEIR LOVE TO MOTHER NaTURE.

These open-minded and -hearted people known as Hippies, Travellers, Freaks, Artists or simply Friends always found a way to share love and fun. This somehow strange behaviour is nothing new to our cultures. Even in ancient times people were gathering to celebrate the harvesting, the sun, the rain, solstices, some properly finished project, the birth of a child or some more profane things like enjoying to meet each other from time to time. So there was a need for celebration locations. In the past these places of celebration were temples or impressive natural sights which maintained preserved and in good condition by being used. nowadays there are no more ancient temples where we may celebrate, so new temples arose, and there was light. But slowly these temples turned into a big money-farting industry with doorkeepers - to keep other reli-gions out - and to ask for a huge temple fee and unreal taxes for our essen-tial liquids. They called themselves discotheques. Some thought that this was not the right way for them to go, theybelieve in nature, freedom, free self expression, being very aware that commercialism is the death of creativity. They found some new temples according to their philosophy far away, hidden in the marvellous coun-tryside of this precious island... Here they could celebrate their way with music in peace and love and unity, without boundaries and without any fees...

Anand was and still is one of the strongest fighters for freedom of expres-sion and was feared as much as a way had to be found to get rid of him. There was no legal way to stop those celebrations as the place he lived was so far away, there was no neighbour to complain and nature was respected 100%. The name of the place he lived was Can Punta, just by saying the name i still get goose bumps, so beautiful were the parties up there. noth-ing seemed to be impossible, it was a gathering of like-minded people in order to celebrate life and love with music. For decades parties were held in the mountains of San Juan so the highpriests of the new temples thought of how to stop those celebrations and found a way...’(THaT waS paRTLy aN EXTRaCT Of My fIRST MaGaZINE, paRTySaN IBIZa, pUB-LISHED IN JULy 1998).

on the 6th of June 1998 at 11 am the police came to his home and gave him a few hours to pack up his stuff, he had been declared a danger for the spanish-french domestic political relations (no joke). He was deported to the mainland and from there on back to France.

14 years later we meet again in Ibiza and i can’t believe the energy and spirit this great man still preserves in his heart. Asking about the results this ejection had on him he says ‘I was traumatized for at least three years, I did not at all expect anything like it. We fought for about two years to make the authorities recognize their mistake as to make party is not a crime, at the end it cost me all my money and time spent with law-yers.’

After this nightmare-come-true he left to new Zealand, a paradise as he says where freedom is still found and nobody cares about a party being held in mother nature. He still has his original Chai Tent travelling the globe following the sun in order to participate in the perfect party. He is booked for several big festivals and became an essential part as his tent is always a meeting point where you can have a break, enjoy the Chai tea and exchange information. Check our homepage for videos and footage to see what we are talking about.

Asking him about if he would change anything in the past he says ‘I should have found a place more far away from the system with the same spirit than Can Punta to celebrate life’. Well, it seems that he has found it in new Zealand and even better, he has the chance to travel and share his love with like-minded people all over the planet.

Talking about Ibiza he says ‘it went worse than in those days, now it is a total rip-off and money controls the island more than ever. The only chance you have if you want to stay is to make money off the rich who invade the island.’

Looking at him i wonder what is his secret to maintain so incredibly young and he gives me a very simple answer: ‘drink two glasses of water every morning before anything else, respect our planet earth, make love as much as you can, share your life and enjoy every day as a new day in para-dise. The future looks bright for the ones that love life and do not shit each other. ‘Asking him about what he thinks of dub ibiza he smiles saying ‘the best form to keep people informed - keep going man, the show must go on!’

There is certain things that really impress me in Ibiza - one is the incredible painting of a Buddha or Avalokiteshvara in Atlantis, painted by a japanese artist in the 70s. When i first saw it about 20 years ago it was one of those special moments you never ever forget. Walking down Atlantis i had a guide teaching me the history of this magical place by telling me that the stones used to build the castle in Ibiza town were carved out from this beach, using ancient techniques to break them out of the sandstone walls. This story in itself is so unbelievable when you see the size of the carved walls and the size of the castle, but there is a lot more to this place.on the way down to Atlantis, more or less on half way, we came to a place that i called the ‘middle station’, a small plateau with a fire place and a sort of cave protected by a stone with a flat front. This stone inspired a Japanese artist to do something that would shape this place from there on forever - he painted what is called today the ‘Buddha of Atlantis’. It must have taken him ages but time has no meaning down here, the painting is so complex you need time to fully explore its beauty. So many details, different messages, all together the stuff legends are made of. The colours he used hardly fade, it only needed some water to be drizzled over and the colours began to shine.

As Atlantis got more and more popular and different magazines showed the way to it, revealing what should have been kept secret, more and more people went down to see what this is all about, leav-ing their names written next to the Buddha or interesting things like ‘Bla and Bla in love 21.12.2001’...... Honestly, i do not get this urge of eternalization that takes posession of some people, my mere respect would never allow me to do so...

Anyway, walking down last winter enjoying the breathtaking beauty of this place made my blood freeze as i turned around to salute my old friend the Buddha........... somebody had oversprayed the whole rock with something that appeared to be or a carrucature of Tanit or just a stupid smiling face dripping out of a fucked up mind. What has been kept clean for more than 50 years has been debased in the most ter-rific way - with a multilayered graffiti.

The shock was so profound i could not think of anything, rage and anger came into my mind and i was looking around as if i could still see the ones that did this. After a few moments the anger trans-formed into sadness and frustration, followed by only one thought - how to get this thing off. As you can see in the pictures we found a way to take it off - even if it takes ages and includes that parts of the original painting go off as well - this is the way to restore the painting to its full beauty. When the spray colour is gone the original painting needs to be redone as it has been partly done several times before due to the normal decay. And when we are done we will give it a layer of protection so nobody can do this ever again. Thanx so much to all volunteers that helped and still help to restore this magi-cal piece of Ibiza and please - do not try to find out who did this - we are sure the person(s) are already drowned in bad karma so no need to know who did it - they know exactly what they did.

If somebody shows you the way to Atlantis then please be as respect-ful as you can be as this is no hidden spot any more but means so much to all of us. If you need to do something to be present there then build a stonetower on the beach next to the water (you will see lots more of it) but do not write or carve anywhere. And if you see any garbage left by somebody else then please take it with you.

2012 is definitely a year of change on multiple levels that is why we chose this moment to re-launch our new homepage www.dubibiza.com. This is not meant to be just an online version of what you got in front of you as dub Magazine, this is far more - an online portal with a Holistic background, giving you lots of infor-mation to improve your life - 24/7.

As the season in Ibiza is so short it was a logical step to rebuild our website from scratch, giving us the possibility to deliver unlimited content the whole year round. We will still focus on music and nightlife in its widest sense, a massive event calen-dar, a complete Ibiza Guide including insider tips, fashion, topics on how to improve your life, lots of ‘qnp’ including our infamous redeye2redneck series and lots more, giving you all necessary information about what is going on in Ibiza. But we will go a lot further spreading our ears and eyes to bring you related content from all over the world.

What it is not – it is no guide to Ibiza so do not expect to find eve-rything in here, therefore you can consult other numerous web-sites.

When you browse the different sections you can see that there is not too much content yet, we will feed it constantly with new sto-ries to make sure you will always find something you did not see before. And we will soon offer all content in English and Spanish, it is just too much work right now and we are – as usual – without sleep for days. Until then be patient and improve your English…

We are also creating a special invite-only social network for all lovers of Ibiza, giving you the chance to expose and exchange information with like-minded people from all over the globe. There you will be able to personalize your profile regarding your profession or preferences. Stay tuned, we will announce it online as soon as it is fully operative.

If in the future some body or thing is not appearing on our web-site there are three possible reasons: we did not hear of it yet, we do not find it interesting enough or we have a very good reason for it. If you think you should definitely appear on the site feel free to contact us at [email protected], we will get in contact you as soon as we got a free minute.

Thanx to Alex, dino and Thomas from Inmedia design for their time, patience and knowledge.

aND NOw BE wELCOME TO DUB IBIZa NETwORk - QUaLITy NEVER pROSTITUTES.

Me pierdo canciones y sigo esperando.

Y sigo esperando.

So picture this: you have the gumption and guts to leave a paid day job you didn’t have your heart in, but which kept you alive, to follow your life’s dream of making music. You invest money you’ve hardly got in equipment of a high enough standard to record releasable tracks, you put yourself through the creative heaven and hell of making an EP, you pull in a favor to get some artwork done, you deliberate over the design and come up with copy you hope will entice people, you pull in more favors and spend some more hard-won money on a promotional video you hope will go viral, you spend time and money uploading your EP to iTunes and wherever, you spend more time and effort creating some kind of buzz through Facebook, Twitter and various blogs, all the while wondering if anyone will like what you’ve done – and during this longwinded, lonely process you’ve not been earning any money, and have been living on pure faith. Then some fucker, fuelled by some sort of distorted impulse of faux-anarchic zeal steals the files off the internet and starts shar-ing them willy nilly, thus cutting the possibility of making any money to repay your investment and affording you a bit of a liv-ing, by approximately 90% - as if it wasn’t hard enough to do that in any case. And I ask you, if you happen to be a faux anarchist such as this, deluding yourself in the misconceived notion you’re liberating these tunes from the grip of the evil capitalist machine for the greater good of humankind, to put yourself momentarily in the artist’s shoes. And with such empathy as this elicits, ask yourself how it could be considered in any way just to assume that some-one who devotes their life to contributing to the world by way of making it sound and feel more beautiful for everyone, should be expected to starve and suffer for their endeavors. Had you sac-rificed similarly, how would you feel seeing your heartfelt gifts thieved and defiled like that?Fortunately vast swathes of humankind have the natural decency to realise this and hence the sale of downloads have finally over-taken the sale of Cds - decency combined with the panoramic intelligence to understand that if all recorded music was thieved – and this applies to all forms of creative output: books, films and so on, not just music – all the artists would eventually die in pen-ury and we’d be living in a very dull, artless world. This is written as an exhortation to honesty and respect for the output of all the artists of this world, this brave, courageous group of souls who make our world the colourful, beautiful place we all still have the privilege to enjoy. The author of this article, the Barefoot doctor, is conducting the biggest sound healing the world has so far ever seen or heard – 12,000 people chanting the sacred oM, accompanied by some of the best EdM acts in existence and some of the funkiest spo-ken word artists on the planet, at Wembley Arena, London on 12.12.12. Come to THE BIG oM – jump to www.thebigom.org to watch the animation and get on the priority ticket list.

HELLO JaMES, yOU aRE ON My LIST Of MUST-BE-INTERVIEwED fOR a LONG TIME aND fINaLLy wE GOT yOU HERE, IT IS My UTMOST pLEaSURE.Thanks! Mine too :)

yOU aRE kNOwN aS ONE Of THE MOST SkILLED DJS OUT THERE USING LOTS Of DIffERENT TECHNIQUES aND DEVICES COMBINING THEM TO SOMETHING NEw CONSTaNTLy. wHERE DOES THIS COME fROM?It came about by accident really. It stems from my days of mix-ing vinyl and trying to imitate my hero’s, Sasha and digweed. The accuracy of their mixing was really something else. Three minute, harmonic mixes on warped imperfect records, dubplates for hours on end is something I found quite fascinating and impressive. So my tech fascination in dJing came from that and now its just this out of control monster that has grown alongside the technology in the industry.

aS THIS SEEMS THE TIME wHERE fINaLLy aLL THE DIffERENT STyLES fUSE yOU MUST HaVE a GREaT TIME OUT THERE - HOw DO yOU SEE THIS DEVELOpMENT?I’ve always played a mixture of styles simply because I like and appreciate lots of music regardless of its genre. There’s always going to be trends but in between them are these transitional phases before the next big thing explodes and eats itself, are these wonderful periods where I don’t feel like an outcast because I’m not playing three hours of a singe genre (I would be bored). now is one of those times I guess and I shall blossom like a flower, haha.

IS THERE aNy MUSIC THaT IS INCOMpaTIBLE wITH EDM?Arguably not but I won’t be playing any of my folk playlists within in my sets. They’re for home use only.

BRaNDS LIkE pIONEER aRE CONSULTING yOU TO HELp THEM DEVELOp NEw pLayERS aND DEVICES, wHaT IS THE NEXT BIG THING COMING?If I told you that they’d have to kill me. But as I’ve been saying for a while, its all about being able to customise your setups. out-side of the music that is really what sets a lot of dJs apart these days.

wHaT wOULD yOU RECOMMEND a NEwCOMER TO STaRT wITH LEaRN-ING HOw TO MIX aND BECOME a GOOD DJ?Its a tough question to answer because of the way of Traktor syncing and the ease in which dJing can be approached with

59 6.1

Page 60: dub magazine ibiza - 07.2012

nothing more than a laptop and the Beatport top ten but your question is how to become a good dJ. Then my answer probably hasn’t changed much in the last few years. If you have a desire to be dJ then make sure you’re a lover of music and have a yearning to share it, obviously this is the most important thing. If you’re a Paris Hilton then get a proper job, hah! I’d still recommend learning to beatmatch even though you don’t have to because it will teach a total beginner about the structure of electronic music and give you a feeling for what sounds right and what doesn’t but its also good fun to do and I feel there are lot of people on the dancefloor that still appreciate a dJ who is riding the pitch. But like anything, get good at the basics before going tech crazy, that can all come later then you can customise your setup to suit your style of playing.

wHaT IS SO SpECIaL aBOUT pERfORMING aT wE LOVE?Its my home from home. I learnt to play in that room. I triumphed and failed in there many times before getting to a point where I feel I understand how to work a room, crowd and system of that size and it still terrifies me but the rush of nailing it in there is unparalleled. Also even with the fear, its a place where I can also experiment and push boundaries musically knowing that the crowd are ready for it and because the promoters believe in this and have built their night upon these principles.

HOw DOES yOUR pERfECT Day LOOk LIkE?Well today I woke up to a lovely email from Al doyle from the band Hot Chip who I’ve just remixed to say they all love the work I did on their track and its approved for release. A day doesn’t get more perfect than that for me at the moment, even though I just missed four trains! I’ll get home eventually.

yOUR faVOURITE SpOTS IN IBIZa? Space of course. But erm, yeah you mean for relaxing? I’ve taken a couple of boat trips to formentera, paradise!

wHaT wOULD yOU DO If yOU wEREN’T a DJ?I honestly do not know. Something music related, it would have to be. Maybe I’d teach snowboarding or something. Getting a real job isn’t something I’d enjoy.

TELL US aBOUT yOUR ‘BORN ELECTRIC’ aCTIVITy THIS SUMMER...Well I’m getting ready to finally launch my label at the end of the Summer and to reflect and celebrate this happening, ‘We Love’ have booked some appropriate artist for the four parties at Space, such as Scuba, Midland, George Fitzgerald and Modeslek-tor. Amazing! I’m so happy about these bookings and that label is now a reality, I even have a logo! Hah... :)

HOLa JaMES, LLEVaS TIEMpO EN Mí LISTa DE DJ´S pOR ENTREVISTaR y TENERTE fINaLMENTE aQUí ES UN GRaN pLaCER.Gracias! El placer es mío :)

ERES CONOCIDO pOR SER UNO DE LOS DJS CON MáS EXpERIENCIa y UN MONTóN DE TéCNICaS y DISpOSITIVOS, COMBINaNDO NOVEDaDES CONSTaNTEMENTE.

¿Hay aLGUNa MúSICa QUE NO ES COMpaTIBLE CON EDM?pOSIBLEMENTE NO, pERO NO VOy a pINCHaR NINGúN TEMa DE MI REpERTORIO fOLk EN MIS SETS.

¿QUé HaCE TaN ESpECIaL pINCHaR EN wE LOVE?Es mi casa, mi hogar En esta sala aprendí a pinchar.

Yes ... :)

It is difficult to cut those days off as the labels take a lot of time and gigs and productions eat the rest, but as long as it is fun and gives me energy there is nothing to complain about.

After twelve years living in Berlin it was time for a change and new York feels like home to me, it is the perfect city, even if I can not really say why, the energy is very special and keeps me awake. Berlin is very much about underground and par-tying and I pretty much soaked this all up to the max but some-times you need another inspiration or let’s say more input so it was time for a change.

TaLkING aBOUT INSpIRaTION, HOw DO yOU MaNaGE TO GET SO MUCH SEX INTO yOUR SETS aND pRODUCTIONS?Makes me happy to hear that, thank you. The whole idea of Get Physical is about that, it is not just named after the song from olivia newton John but is definitely our approach to get people on the dancefloor and move them. And if you can as well deliver a mind-trip you got them where you want them to be - dancing. It is not about playing superficial house where every secretary can dance to (nothing against secretaries but we get what he wants to say :)) or this Ketamine sound which I do not like at all. For us it is about getting the girls on the floor because if they move the boys do so as well. It is a physical thing and if this is linked to sexiness then I am very happy about that.

We want them to really dig deep in their record collection to do something different, telling a not-so-obvious story.

GET pHySICaL IS aMONGST THE TOp RaTED LaBELS...In the past year we were the most-charted label eight out of twelve times, that shows we go the right way. I lived in new York from 2009 to 2011 constantly but had to come back as Booka Shade left the label as did dJ T so it was obvious I had to come back, you can not run this from a distance. As well the team we put together is absolutely amazing, we are one big family and it is based on friendship rather than doing a job. Patrick (Bodmer, the other part of M.A.n.d.Y.) and me are so happy to work with them, it is essential to know that all are pulling in the same direction. It took us almost ten years to have a really good setup and this reflects in our output, it is as simple as that.

HOw DO yOU CHOOSE THE aRTISTS?For Get Physical and Get digital it is Patrik and me and for Kin-disch there are as well Mantu and Martin involved, Mantu is our label manager and Martin the product manager. We do it the tra-ditional way, testing tracks in the clubs and see how it works. After we know it works we need to fall in love with it, only then we decide it is good enough to be released. Thomas Koch, aka dJ T., is a huge help as well, he is signing a lot of great music too. He’s coming up with great compliation concepts and does amaz-ing music himself. We can’t thank him enough...

THE DIffERENCE BETwEEN kINDISCH aND GET pHySICaL? BTw., kINDISCH MEaNS ‘CHILDISH’ SOMEHOw...Kindisch is not a sublabel from Get Physical, it is an own trade-mark and developed its own style. You don’t really need an A-side for it, as I love to play afterparties this is definitely more the Kin-disch style, straight from the heart. Those 10 am tracks that you like to play as well...

I DEfINITELy DO LOVE TO pLay THEM, yES.The roster is amazing, Adultnapper, Jay Haze and Gavin Herlihy released on it and many many more. We are not in a rush with it, there is no need to follow a release plan, it is just music we love.

My faVE IS aDELINE wITH ‘LOVE HaNDLES yOU’...oh yeah, I love this girl. do you have the fur coat remix?

NO I DON’T.... How could this happen? I send it over right now...

UpCOMING RELEaSES ON kINDISCH, wHaT CaN wE EXpECT?In the Fuse club in London I met a guy called Hamid Benmes-saoud, he delivered three amazing tracks, then there is Cipy from Italy, a newcomer but very good, and many more.

NEwS fROM M.a.N.D.y.?Patrick and me are exchanging ideas constantly, in August we celebrate the release number 200 so this is going to be one of ours, and in Fall we go to new York together to work on an album. We will as well release a track on City Fox from Zurich, a label we work with very closely, and another one will be released on the 10 years compilation of Watergate, so we get busy again after a nec-essary break.

THE ORIGIN Of THE NaME M.a.N.D.y.?In our early days we had to do a remix for Sony music and had no name for it so as we were brainstorming we had this girl in our mind and thought of calling it Mandy. In the video for the track

there was this superhot dJane playing so all people thought when booking us this chick would be Mandy, getting confused when we both showed up... So finally we put the dots in between the let-ters and M.A.n.d.Y. was born.Five years later we went to an afterparty in Zurich and the obvi-ous question came up - what is the meaning of it - and as we were not able to find a suitable explanation for the name one guy says ‘I thought it means Me And You’ and we had our perfect explana-tion - it is always about Me And You in some way. So the credit goes to this guy from Switzerland.

yOUR pERfECT Day?definitely outdoors, very good food, doing some exercise and hang out with friends. I love nature and food...

aND yOU LOVE yOUR fRIENDS... pHILIpp JUNG IN TEN yEaRS?definitely playing less, maybe once or twice a month, as long as I love it I will keep doing it. I studied Hotel and Tourism manage-ment and love restaurants and hotels, so a combination of all would be the perfect choice.

pLaNS fOR IBIZa THIS yEaR? yOU pLayED aLREaDy TwICE...on the third of July we play alongside Booka Shade in Pacha, then we play in Ushuaia with Sasha, another time with Steve Lawler in Sankeys and in August we play the Flying Circus in Space with Audiofly.

DO yOU THINk IT IS IMpORTaNT fOR a DJ TO HaVE HIS OwN NIGHT? THIS yEaR IT LOOkS LIkE THE GaME ‘MUSICaL CHaIRS’ wITH RITCHIE HawTIN GOING TO SpaCE, MaRCO CaROLa TakING OVER aMNESIa ON fRIDayS aND MaNy OTHERS, BILLBOaRDS wITH a pICTURE aND NaME Of THE DJ aRE MORE ‘EN VOGUE’ aS EVER BEfORE...nowadays it is all about branding, you need a name to get Spon-sorship to finance your own night. I am more the loyal type, the changes in Ibiza every year have nothing to do with loyalty, eve-rybody tries to maximize their own profit to take as much money off the island as possible. This not about feelings but pure busi-ness, no family vibe which is supersad. The same happens in Sonar Festival, it is simply too much, if every dJ does his own party it can not work out - but at the end of the day you meet them friends in some private house and everybody has a good time.

HOw MaNy VIp ZONES SHOULD a CLUB HaVE?When we celebrate our night in Watergate we close the VIP, our friends are always in there and we don’t see them on the dance-floor because they do what ever they do in there but it should always be about ‘dont ask what the Party can do for you, ask what you can do for the Party’. As I said before, we like the people on the dancefloor.

wHaT HappENS ON THE 21ST Of DECEMBER 2012?definitely not the end of the world, this is written nowhere, but a shift in consciousness is definitely happening already, hopefully we move from this hardcore exploitation to a more downsized model. obviously it is still not happening in big companies but on a personal level I see a lot of friends changing their minds. We decided to play more smaller clubs as well, experience shows that all that buzz does not make you feel happier, even if that means you make less money it makes you feel more comfortable.

69 6.1

Page 70: dub magazine ibiza - 07.2012

¿CóMO SE ELIGE a LOS aRTISTaS?Para “Get Physical” y “Get Digital” elegimos Patrik y yo y para “Kindisch” están involucrados Mantu y Martin.

MI faVORITa ES aDELINE CON ‘LOVE HaNDLES yOU’ ...Sí joder, me encanta esta chica.

NOTICIaS DE M.a.N.D.y.?Patrick y yo intercambiamos ideas constantemente.

¿CREES QUE ES IMpORTaNTE QUE UN DJ TENGa UNa NOCHE pROpIa? ESTE añO paRECE EL JUEGO DE “SILLaS MUSICaLES” CON RITCHIE HawTIN EN EL SpaCE, MaRCO CaROLa HaCIéNDOSE CaRGO DE LOS VIERNES EN aMNESIa y MUCHOS OTROS.

fUR COaT / mInd oVer matter

Fur Coat is the brainchild of Sergio Munoz and Israel Sunshine, both from Venezuela. They developed their very own sound, an explosive melange of addictive vocals, multi-layered sounds, psychedelic synths and as-groovy-as-hell basslines and kicks. The album is a master-piece, the more i listen to it the more tracks go directly into my sets.

V.a. / FULL Body WorKoUt 9

Top names in the genre make appearances regu-larly on the FBW, shining a light on where the scene is, and where it’s headed. ‘Full Body Work-out Vol. 9’ is no exception, with tracks from Simon Baker, Audiojack, noir & Atapy, Gel Abril and more, it’s a slice of what’s current in some of the brightest minds of electronic music.

V.a. / CoCoon heroes 2012

Cassy and Joris Voorn compiled the double Cd for this year’s Cocoon Heroes - Into the magic season. Cassy delivers a melange of dub meets House with trax from Mr. G, Agnes, dJ dan, rush or Kasper, taking you on a tour-de-rhyme. Joris Voorn is more of the detroit-driven deep tech house school, globally reknown for his unique blending style.

V.a. / monZa promo Cd 2012

nima Gorji mixed this year’s promo Cd for Monza, showcasing their understanding of con-temporary underground house to perfection. As always Monza goes different ways, not heading for what-has-to-be-played but what they like to be played and nima is acornerstone of the Monza-Family. Go to our mixcloud.com/dubibi-zanetwork and listen to the release there.

aMIRaLI / In tIme

Amirali is originally from Iran but lives currently in Canada. He is a multi-musician, playing all the instruments and vocals on this album himself apart from the killer arrangements. This is the beginning of a shining carreer, that is for sure. The racks sound like he was always amongst the best of the best, so watch out for this name in the bright future.

aLEX NIGGEMaNN / paranoId FUnK

His album ‘Paranoid Funk’ is his latest state-ment to contemporary tech house music fla-voured with his skills as a very well-trained pianist, melting together solid german tech house with vocals from great artists like Benji on the track ‘Back 2 Basics. My favourite is ‘Lov-ers’ featuring the voice of daniel John reidl, a track with only one problem - it is too short...

CHRIS COCO / Freedom street

Freedom Street is a real place in south London. And is an imaginary state of grace in the city, a feeling of belonging, a sense of letting go on a spectacularly hot summer’s day. It’s about liv-ing in London now, it’s coloured by the music of the past. It’s about feeling good, in a kind of melancholy way. It’s about being laid back, but ready for action. It’s about new ways of seeing old things, about a sense of wonder for familiar surroundings.

aCID paULI / mst

Acid Pauli aka Martin Gretschmann delivers an album on nicholas Jaar’s imprint Clown + Sunset that could not be more (a)typical in the widest sense. All tracks have a kind of weird, tempo-changing 90’s trip-hop atmosphere that seems hard to access in the first run but the closer you listen the deeper they suck you into his very own universe. A collector’s item for sure, but do not try to play this in a club.

V.a. / Lnt-mUsIC For pLeasUre

Tom Findlay from Groove Armada presents a special Music For Pleasure selection. The 18 tracks chosen here have been lovingly re-edited and mixed by Tom as a seamless voyage through some of the finest soulful pop music of the 70s and early 80s. Tom Findlay says of the record, “it’s very much a ‘concept’ record, blue eyed soul, yacht rock. Vibe was very much tunes that I used to blast on the tour bus.”

LUkE SOLOMON / CUttInG edGe

Luke’s mix is a taught selection of moody and broody house and techno. It waves and skillfully snakes its way through sultry vocal stuff, tightly wired synths and bare machine grooves of a decidedly timeless nature. Along with d-Edge’s reputation for futuristic clubbing experiences, this finely mixed selection from Luke Solomon is as fresh as you’d expect.

JaMIE JONES / taLes From the Crypt

Electro clashed tracks full of irresistible grooves, most heavy basslines and cooperations with different artists make each track a piece of art. You will find some of the tracks that were included in his tour 2011 next to classics like ‘Paradise’ and some that come fresh out of his studio. My fave is ‘city at night’ featuring Sur-veillance Party 2010, a groovemonster with a most addictive, slightly schizo vocal that drills into your brain with no option to escape.

V.a. / oCean deep IBIZa

Eva Pacifico delivers her superb vision of a deep house collection filled with listening pearls from the likes of Phonique, Alex niggemann, Inxec vs. droog or oliver Schories. Well-known for her excellent radio shows, this is something like the ‘Best of’ her shows. This continuous mix is made for listening on repeat over and over again, bringing the island’s vibe directly into your speakers - like an instant holiday.

V.a. / 5 years dIynamIC

This five years celebration is a special one as all the benefits go to a children’s orphanate in Hamburg - hats down gentlemen, that is the right way to celebrate. 23 tracks of finest deep, sexy house music leaving you speechless with the booty still shaking long after the last track ended. respect.

MaayaN NIDaM / neW moon

After releasing more striped down tracks on legendary labels like Perlon or Freak n’Chic she soon developed a more diverse style being influenced by cuban-like grooves and deeper melodies and multiple layers of little snippets that gave her tracks a deepness that was miss-ing before. Her new album is by far her most versatile release, even after repeatedly listen-ing you find new elements.

DEEp DIVE CORp. / Beats n’thInGs...

deep dive Corporation are back - that for itself is great news already, what comes out is a real killer album. Coolest vocals, diggin rhythms and the typical ubercoolness when it comes to use instruments and voices. The atmosphere could not be more easy, making it difficult to do anything else but stick to the speakers, moving hips included.

aDELINE / LoVe handLes yoU rmXsAdeline is the scandinavian deep house queen par excellence so it was no wonder that GPM got hands on her, especially when they listened to ‘love handles you’ it was obvious that she is made for Kindisch. now the remixes are to be released, taking it one gear higher. discjokke converts it into a peaktime acidy monster, Camea convert it into a trip to heaven with twisted vocals and broken detroit beats over 4/4, but the cherry is the fur coat rmx - starting deep then getting dark and dunkel yet propelling it into outer space. nothing for the faint hearted.

BETOkO / BeFore I Loose ControLdamian Lazarus calls it underground pop and i pretty much like that expression, it crosses the fine line between pop and finest house conserv-ing the best of both genres. Miss Jools delivers my favourite mix, exactly my cup of tea, starting deeeeep and ghostly yet building a groove impos-sible to resist. Perfect to warm up a crowd ready to go on any trip you like them to go. Barrio Speedwagon take it one step too far for me, and Santos resiak is a bit transparent as well.

COMpUpHONIC / sUnsetHow low can u go? This track will chill you dancing want it or not, as dry as it can be with an oriental touch by Marques Toliver it will unite club-bers and hippers into a big family. dJ T delivers his version, sounds simi-lar in the beginning but is richer and more floor-orientated, bringing out the best of the original yet redefining it in his very special way. A release to remember and a perfect tool for any skilled dJ to conquer hearts and minds by storm with its virgin attitude of drawing a smile on everybodys face - want it or not.

fRaNCESCa LOMBaRDO / the ChanGeThe dJane, vocalist and pianist has played with many big shots already but seem to only lately have found her very own characteristic sound, con-sisting in transmitting feelings in her very own way. ‘The change’ is a trip to rich sounds, schizo bg vocals and many shades of rhythms. ‘Is it true’ reveals her incredible voice and has a masterful intro, leading to dancefloor heaven when the kick comes in. ‘oldschool Anna’ says it all, rich synths meet oldschool beats pushing you on the floor, and finally ‘Sofiel’ is a trip into soul heaven not meant to burn a floor but conquer your heart with beautiful sounds.

LaRSSON / Got the ChoICe

Get Physical is one of the spearheads of german housemusic, constantly deliv-ering floor killers as if it would be the most easy thing to do. Latest entry is Larsson, presenting an E.P. as deep as you let it go entering your neurones.

‘The atmosphere’ is just this, creating a hypnotic track out of loving melodies, 303s and heavy basslines.’Got the choice ‘ comes in two versions, the original is oldschool house at its finest, rich rhythm carpets re-synthesize your imagi-nation flavoured with schizo melodies, underlined by a heavy kick that, when it comes in, makes your booty shake in pleasure. And the vocal is the cher-riy on the pie. The dub version is stripped down to the essence, taking it to a deepness that is characteristic for Larsson. respect.

LaURa JONES / LeFtroom presents LaUra jonesWhile preparing her album for leftroom she puts out three appetizers to get into the groove of what is there to come. Gavin Herlihy’s ‘C’mon peo-ple’ is one of the lucky ones to appear, remixed by ryan Crosson in a weird yet driving discoish way. Matt Tolfrey and Sam russo put hands on Laura’s Intentions, converting it into a broken beat monster able to shake your booty off the ground.

But the killer is Matt Tolfrey and daniel Maher’s hit ‘It ain’t over yet’ in a remake of Gavin Herlihy. The original stayed a long time in my sets and this remix will top it easily. So groovy, so cool, so true and authentic almost too good to be true. Propels any floor into dancefloor heaven with no guarantee of a safe return - so what?

V.a. / dIynamIC 058diynamic reveals another bomb - this is one of the funkiest releases so far and is set to burn the floors all over the globe. Karmon delivers ‘Wooshit’ - a very deep but rolling track that drills into your brain by its addictive melodies, chords and the overall feeling of warmth. nTFo joins Karma for the second track, getting a bit more disco with a cool vocal and once more coolest disco chords, melodies and synths. The killer on this release is already causing a buzz, Betoko’s ‘raining again’ - one of those tracks that immediately conquers your hips and heart with a very deep male vocal making you wish to get on holiday. release of the month.

kaRMON / tUrnInG poIntnot-so-new but just got hand son it and have to review it. ‘Turning Point’ is a track bursting from emotions, the longer you listen the more addicted you get and everything can happen, if only it would have no end... ‘Solar Beam’ is discoish deep house par excellence, made for an open air under blue sky and sunset followed by a long night. ‘Hold’ is flavoured with Pony’s voice, taking you on a rhythm trip so deep you can easily forget the way back to reality. It is one of those EPs that you wish to play in front of a dedicated crowd on a sunny day at an open-air somewhere in the green with hundreds of smil-ing faces and shaking hips in front of you - giving them a litte bit to dream in order to disconnect from the every-day-craze.

fRaNk & TONy / dItoFrank & Tony aka Anthony Collins and Francis Harris present their second release on self named record label Frank & Tony records, which is a the offshoot to their Scissor & Thread label – a stunning two tracker show-casing immaculate production skills and shining with Balearic harmony. ‘I Fall’ gets to work with a powerful bass and slick raw kick. The blissful, dreamy vocal (by Gry - the singer with the angelic voice we all loved so much on the Francis Harris ‘Leland’ album) soon sweeps into the mix to unfold a beautifully smooth slice of quality house music. Melodic keys and seamless synth flows add an extra dose of real class. ‘Marigolds’ is burst-ing with groove as a funk ridden, down tempo house beat leads the way. The magnetic flow of warm reverbing keys swell and fall through the infec-tious male vocal which is sang by Bob Moses.

SaTOSHI TOMIIE / prIsm VIsIonMelisma is still amongst my favourites, the label of dani Casarano is alwqys good for surprises. Satoshi Tomiie delivers the release number 13, creating two tracks dedicated to the floors in order to make you move. Slow build-ups, heavy kicks and repetitive melodies are the ingredients to dancefloor heaven. The longer the tracks last the deeper they suck you in with oldschool elements arranged in a very sophistic yet hypnotic way.

SONICURE / reInKarmatIonSonicure delivers another deepest release with this three track E.P., title track features the voice of The Barefoot doctor confirming that the end of the wortld is not coming but the biginning of a new era, a golden era. The other track - revolucion, is a slowly-but-steadily upbuilding track best played around 3 am to make a crowd move at any cost. ‘Studio Steppdecke’ is the home of Sonicure and could prove again that tracks made in Ibiza are at the same level than big productions from Germany or England, fla-voured with this special balearic feel that makes it irresistible.

TIGERSTRIpES / state I’m InSir Tigerstripes delivers another killer release on Get Physical, not new but i definitely need to review this one. The atmosphere is so intense and the vocal drills into your neurones, speaking directly from the heart. Massive beats and a rich surrounding make this EP one to stay in your sets once you got hooked. Wherever i play it people come running instantly asking for the name.

TEEN COLLECTION / hot jam 96Lauren Jane is a LA based artist who gives her debut on Vosionquest, the track features the voice of Jaw from doP. Lazer Eyez is a floor killer of the friendly kind, funky percussions meet tough bassline, out comes a track best played before peak time. Qbeck delivers Alice featuring the voice of Julia Govor from russia. rolling basslines meet tribal drums. Last track is Clarians ‘All over all kinds’ - gothic vocals merge with stomping claps and a most heavy sub bass, making it the most forward track of the three.

NaTHaN BaRaTO / BaCK Up qUeenFeaturing a sample from a late 70s classic and some “Jack Pot” reverb, chopped and scattered over a rumbling acidic bassline, the original ‘Back Up Queen’ is a proper workout for the floor with warehouse vibes all over and thick, heavy drums immersed in analogue warmth. delivering some seriously chunky percussion in his remix, Berlin born and raised oliver $ puts all emphasis on the rhythmic groove, forgoing some of the sampling and merging tribal drums with the spoken words and deep stabs. oliver was one of the biggest selling artists of 2011 with various Beatport num-ber ones, subsequently smashing it on the end of year charts. Third up on remix duty, a new and unidentified rekids artist, 808 Fake, strips ‘Back Up Queen’ to a naked snare allowing the rest to blend in a backdrop of analogue fuzz underneath the understated pulse of the bassline.

.

LE LOUp / 4 my homIe epLeonard Perret aka Le Loup stays true to his roots linking up with impress-ing Parisian imprint Eklo with ‘4 My Homie’ - a limited pressing, seven-tracker and the first double vinyl release on the label to date. Things open up in a laid back and seductive manner, with ‘Lost Treasure’ commencing with stripped back drums and rolling snares welcoming a layer of warm reversed chords to take centre stage. driven by a squelchy disco-like bassline, soulful vocals snippets and warm pads, ‘Sweet Touch’ is a funk-laden groove that does not quit. The flip then welcomes label head Seuil to the foray for ‘reverie’, and the collaboration delivers an epic, hypnotis-ing and constantly evolving piece. The C-side steps things up a gear with a couple of dance floor weapons. ‘Ghetto of The Mind’ rumbles along to a 909 influenced percussive track, which gains depth and space when met with a deep male vocal, rhodes chords, and atmospheric pads. ‘Mystery Unfolds’ is a constant builder, unfolding gradually around a raw beat to reveal deep stabs, skipping hats and a killer bassline.

HNQO / poInt oF VIeWFor the latest release on the label, the unstoppable Hot Creations snap up rising Brazilian star HnQo and ‘Point of View’ – a stunning two tracker destined for summer dance floors with sexy, swooping basslines and seductive female vocals. Title track ‘Point of View’ beautifully embodies the new generation of house music. deliciously deep with a moody groove, the prominent percussive passages soon lead to an infectious female vocal. The song style vocal carried through into the second track ‘Pain n’ Love’ holds a central line once again, this time coming from the poetic lady of rhythm Effluence. Caribbean born but now residing in Canada, her background as a writer, performer and poet shines through in her beau-tiful way with words. However no limelight is taken from the impressive low-slung bouncing bassline that will surely slay the floor.

STEVE BUG / those GrooVesSteve Bug drops a new outstanding 12” on his own highly prolific Poker Flat recordings. ‘Those Grooves’ is the perfect primer for his upcoming album (due out in autumn 2012), and sees the man in fine form - mas-terfully in control of his sound and producing tracks with a depth of dancefloor knowledge most other producers would die for. ‘Those Grooves’, the lead track locks into its exquisitely crafted groove early on, holding a taut balance between its individual elements. Midway through its 10 minutes, Bug drops the tempo and lets the groove breath, before bring-ing it all back home - an audacious late night club weapon. The flip side is no less dramatic – ‘Tell Me Why’ creeps up, evolving slowing but surely – before an edgy, freaked out bass line drops over the crisp drums. A true peak-time burner with enough energy and tension to smash any floor.

HUMaN wOMaN / dj sampLerHuman Woman is a combination of two extraordinary characters. Jón Atli a.k.a Sexy Lazer & Gísli Galdur a.k.a Galdur. Both have the skills to trans-form their knowledge from another musical world to the floors of this planet’s clubs, taking on a position that really marks a difference. The tracks are so rich in multiple sounds yet always maintain the destination dancefloor. My fave is I#s gonna hurt you - title is not program as it does not hurt at all, it just makes you move want it or not.

aNJa SCHNEIDER / LIttLe CreatUresMobilee label-chief, Anja Schneider and BPitch wingman, Kiki, solely dom-inate the release with minimal beats, in sync claps, soft baselines and a deep blow of infernal lyrics heavily breathing out, “are you a saint or are you a sinner?” Flip over to the B-side and Anja and Kiki welcome back the seductive vocals of L.A. treasure-girl, Cari Golden who colored her name bold after being featured in Pan-Pot’s “Captain My Captain”. Also written and produced by Anja Schneider and Kiki, the multi-faceted track “Some-thing That’s For Life” is revved up at the start making it a total girl-power number.
