A Brief History ofAmerican Football atTrinity CollegeThe sport of American football was irst played inTrinity in the 1990s, by the Dublin University Gridiron Society. The Gridiron Society eventuallyevolved into DUAFC as it is today, oficially established in 2007 and now entering its third seasonin the Irish American Football League (IAFL).

DUAFC is a student organization, run by and for the students of Trinity. In just two seasons, the club has seen success unparalleled inAmerican football in Ireland: last year, it shocked the league by winning seven games without conceding a single point. As a result theclub’s name spread swiftly across campus, and it has seen its playingcore rise accordingly: the club now counts nearly 50 players on itsroster going into the 2010 season.

2010 looks set to be an exciting year forDUAFC, as it looks to build further on thesuccess of its previous season and cement itsposition as one one of the best teams in Ireland. The spectacle that is American footballis, in fact, the fastest growing sport in Ireland, and the club is doing its part in bringing this ledgling game to the eyes of moreand more people in Trinity and beyond.

This year also sees the return of the Trinity Bowl, an annual invitational game played on College Park in Trinity’s citycentre campuswhich irst took place in 1992. This year’s game, to be played on April8, 2010, will see the University of Essex, one of Britain’s top collegiateteams, travelling to Dublin to face off against Trinity in what will beboth sides’ irst ever international intervarsity game.
