We remember Bud for hisfriendly, outgoing and forthrightmanner; one who always held asincere interest in the welfare ofothers, and who will forever bemissed by those who knew him.

Upon his death, Ruth Read senta gift to the Delta Upsilon Educa­tional Foundation in memory ofBud. Following Mrs. Read'sgenerosity, the Foundation hasestablished the "Read MemorialChallenge" as a means for brothersto make gifts to honor the memoryof Brother Read. A complete listingof such gifts, over and above anindividual's annual support, willappear in the July Quarterly.

Additionally, as author of DeltaUpsilon's150thanniversaryhistory,"Challenge,Conflict andChange," hespent morethan sixyears inresearchingand writing the book which waspublished in 1984. His wife of 54years, Ruth, noted that, "Bud typedthe history on an old Royal type­writer ... enjoying every page of it."

Brother Read was a World WarII veteran and a highly successfulbusinessman as a manager for theA.P. Green Refractories Company.Upon his retirement in 1972, heserved his community of La Jolla,California in outstanding fashion

of its great brothers of the TwentiethCentury. The loss of Orville H."Bud" Read, Missouri '33, holdssignificance for anyone who hasever read a copy of this magazine,for he was the Quarterly's editor for22 years (1947-1969). In that time,he made 88 consecutive deadlines,many times by mailing a copy to theprinters from Europe, Asia or theFar East - places that his businessrequired him to visit.

For 60 years, Brother Readexemplified the true meaning of alifetime membership in DeltaUpsilon. Initiated into the MissouriChapter in 1931, his extensiverecord of service to the Fraternityincluded terms as Chairman of theUndergraduate Activities Commit­tee; a member of the Fraternity'sBoard of Directors (1948-50 and1958-60); Chairman of the Board(1962-67 - one of only seven

chapter this past Fall at Texas A&MUniversity. On November 1 and 2,there were 43 undergraduates and 30parents andalumniinitiated intothe newchapter. Theceremony,held at a localchurch, wasone of thelargestinstallationsin recentFraternityhistory. More than 150 guests,friends, University officials andfamily members were present at RiteII, the flag raising ceremony, and theinstallation banquet. Brothers
