Think Shade Trees This Summer!Jim DEzEll

S trategically placed shade trees can add tremendous value to your outdoor living spaces, especially during the hot summer. Not only does it feel up to 20 degrees cooler in the shade than in the direct sun, but the shade environment

creates terrific opportunities for under plantings of colorful foliage plants that cannot tolerate full sun. Additionally, trees provide a natural habitat for birds and squirrels and produce oxygen to help cleanse the air we breathe. Economically, properly selected trees can begin to reduce your home cooling costs within a few years and a fully grown tree canopy can reduce cooling costs by up to 40%.

Top Shade Trees for South FloridaEight trees stand out due to their exceptional

growth characteristics, low maintenance and reasonable prices.

MODERATE SizE TREES (uP TO 20 FEET)Japanese Fern Tree. Deep green, exotic fern-like leaves, naturally symmetrical canopy, great branch structure for hanging orchids or baskets.Magnolia. Dark green, glossy leaves with copper undersides; truly unique. Large

fragrant white flowers during the spring and sporadically throughout the year.Cassia. Two varieties to choose from, both with bright yellow flowers. In bloom much of the year.

Bottlebrush. Distinctive light bark. Flowers are 6” long cylinders of scarlet blossoms.

LARGE TREES (40 FEET AND BEyOND)Royal Poinciana/Jacaranda. Light canopy withstands high winds and allows grass to grow underneath. Spectacular flowering in the spring and sporadically throughout the year.Live or Laurel Oak. Stately historical tree that adds beauty and grace to any landscape. Very dense canopy.Bulnesia. Tropical glossy leaves with a complex buttercup flower. Very fast grower.Gumbo Limbo. Distinctive reddish exfoliating bark. Interesting branching has lots of character.

All of these trees are available at Flamingo Road Nursery, and other local nurseries. A well-rooted 8 foot specimen should run $150-$200 in a 25 gallon pot and installation is approximately

$100. For $250 - $300, you would be hard pressed to find a better long-term investment that also provides instant gratification during these dog days of summer!

Senior Resource Guide makes it Easy to Access important information

D uring these tough economic times, many seniors are relying more on the social services that are available

to them. Davie’s Housing and Community Development Department recently launched a Senior Resource Guide and web page to give them better access to these services.

“The calls to our department for referrals have increased,” said Giovanni Moss, director of Housing and Community Development.

“We want to make it easy for seniors and their caregivers to understand what is available and give them the tools they need to easily access these services. The Guide places all of the information in one central document.”

The Guide provides information on local, state and federal services dedicated to the se-nior community in the areas of housing, nu-trition, transportation, healthcare and finan-cial assistance. The website has quick links to other websites that provide information on the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), Weatherization Assistance Program, Medicaid-Assisted Liv-ing for the Elderly Services Waiver, Lifeline and Link Up, Broward County Tran-

sit Disability Bus Pass and Home Touch, as well as many other programs and services. The Town’s Senior Advisory Committee was given a first look at the new Senior Resource Guide and provided recommendations on how to market and improve it.

Residents can use the guide online, download it from the website or pick up a hard copy from Town Hall. In the near future, it will also be available at the library, community center and other places that seniors congregate. The Senior Resource Guide is just one of many that the Department has developed to address various needs in the community. Some of the others include a Foreclosure Prevention Resource Guide, Green Housing Initiative Resource Guide and Service Provider Guide.

To view any of the Housing and Community Development Department guides, including the Senior Resource Guide, visit the department’s page on the Town of

Davie website, http://www.davie-fl.gov/Pages/DavieFL_HousingCDv/index. For additional information, call 954-797-1173.

O ur dog Pepper is a 1 1/2 year old Miniature Schnauzer. She is our best friend and playmate. In the morning she loves to go for long walks with us to see all of the neighborhood dogs. She is so excited when we get

home from a long day at school that she jumps up to give us licks and kisses. She loves playing fetch, tug-of-war, and running laps around the house. At night she loves cuddling on the couch to have her belly rubbed before bed time.

COSMETIC, IMPLANT & SEDATION DENTISTRY OF PLANTATION

Dr. Freddy Vallejo, DDs

What do you get when you combine old-world professionalism with the 21st

century’s best dental technology? The best of both worlds in one—Dr. Freddy Vallejo. He and his staff fulfill their mission statement’s promise:

“Our commitment is to deliver superior, innovative cosmetic and implant dentistry with honesty and friendliness. Our dedicated team will carefully identify our patients’ needs and exceed their expectations. Our patients understand that exceptional quality, preventative and restorative, is the way to long term health and comfort. A healthy and very happy patient is our ultimate reward.”

Dr. Vallejo is a graduate of Miami’s Barry University with a Bachelor of Science degree in

biology. Vallejo received his D.D.S. from Chicago’s Northwestern University with a doctoral degree in dental surgery. Furthering his training, he completed an externship in Boulder, Colorado before attending UCLA’s residency program. He finalized his studies at Misch Implant Institute. Dr. Vallejo’s practice, which began in 1994, focuses on general and cosmetic dentistry and implant surgery. His patients are children, the elderly, and everyone in between.

Outstanding professionals like Dr. Vallejo are always learning. He updates his education

frequently because he strives to keep up with the latest techniques in order to provide his patients with the best care.

Although he had received IV Sedation Training at UCLA, Dr. Vallejo recently attended a continuing residency on IV Sedation at the University of Alabama. Conscious sedation is used when patients are apprehensive about having dental work done or when they are going to undergo a long procedure. With this service, the patient typically does not remember dental work that was done and feels comfortable during subsequent visits.

Whereas in the past, patients have required multiple visits, with conscious sedation they

now have such a positive experience that much more can be accomplished in just one visit! Not all patients are good candidates (because of multiple medical problems); however, most patients do qualify and will benefit from this procedure.

On your first visit to Dr. Vallejo, he will evaluate you to determine whether or not you are a candidate.

In his brand-new suite of offices, Dr. Vallejo has literally converted his practice from 1990s technology to that of the 21st century. Along with his excellent education and outstanding skills, the latest technology enhances his abilities to offer his patients the best dentistry available. That means taking digitized x-rays, for example. His patients are exposed to less radiation and digitization gives faster answers than traditional x-rays.

Dental implants are even better with the use of CT scans. Dr. Vallejo’s procedures are less

invasive. Using the scans means better planning for surgery. For the patient it means a more precise placement of implants.

Even teeth-whitening here is not the same. Dr. Vallejo uses a different light than those typically used and results are very pleasing. In effect, the patient gets two sessions for the cost of one.

Dr. Vallejo’s approach to cosmetic dentistry lets his patients leave his office with instant,

temporary orthodontics. Patients can comfortably wear them until the final restorations are in place.

“I focus on giving my patients the best quality materials and labs,” he says. No matter what procedure has put you in his chair, every one of them is equipped with satellite TV. Beyond their entertainment value, the screens can be used as monitors for visual aids when discussing plans and procedures for his patients.

Dr. Vallejo knows how difficult it is to be kept waiting, saying, “We respect our patients’

t ime and are sure to maintain appointments.”

We all know the importance of twice yearly checkups and teeth cleaning. But for some, bad past experiences have kept them away from the dentist for years. If you’ve ignored your teeth, you’ll want to v i s i t Dr. Vallejo. He won’t chastise you. He’ll assure you that, “You’ve taken the first right step. We’ll help you have a good first experience.” If you’re still uncertain, don’t worry. Dr. Vallejo provides sedation; anesthesia and nitrous oxide, among others to keep you relaxed and pain-free.

Despite the latest in technology, Dr. Vallejo says, “I’ve always been the same. I always ask, ‘how

can I help?” In addition to caring for your dental health, his goal is to help patients overcome their fears, ultimately not even requesting sedation. He wants you to have a very positive experience that will change your mind about caring for your mouth.

Dr. Vallejo’s practice is located at 101 No. Pine Island Road, Suite 101.

CALL HIM AT 954-382-0110 Bring your dental health into the 21st century—

and into Dr. Vallejo’s caring hands. Dental care and a healthy mouth are just the beginning. Restoring your teeth to their youthful whiteness creates an appealing, younger smile. Go all the way. Get rid of your ugly wrinkles. With Dr. Vallejo’s skills, they’ll never guess your age!

D avie’s Mireya Kilmon has been a member of the local Federation of Women’s Club for more than 18 years. In May, she was selected as Volunteer of the Year from the Florida Federation of Women’s Club. She competed against

13 women from districts throughout the State of Florida. “I was so surprised, honored and humbled to accept the award,” said Kilmon. “All of the other women were amazing and deserved it just as much as I did.”

Kilmon was recognized for many of her volunteer efforts at the local and national level. She is very involved with churches throughout the community. She has volunteered for a dental clinic for the underprivileged, Make-a-Wish Foundation and Sharing Smiles. She has helped raise money for Safespace, a shelter for victims of domestic violence and much more. She is also a certified “Go Red for Women” volunteer and has spoken to Women’s Club members about the importance of keeping their hearts healthy.

One of Kilmon’s greatest passions, however, is the work that she does for the Arthritis Foundation. More than 40 million Americans suffer from some form of arthritis, a disease that is mainly characterized by inflammation of the lining of the joints. Many have chronic pain that limits their daily activity. Kilmon, 54, is very familiar with the disease since she was diagnosed with Rheumatoid arthritis when she was only 27. Her doctors told her that she would be disabled by the age of 40. Although she has beaten the odds, she is constantly adapting to the challenges of living with the disease. She had to give up her career as a labor and delivery nurse. It has become difficult to do every day things like carrying something heavy; pumping gas; opening a door and tying a shoe. She has endured seven reconstructive joint surgeries, including full reconstruction of both of her feet and three joint replacements in her right hand. “I wear the scars of my surgeries as a badge of courage and hope those scars inspire others who suffer from arthritis,” said Kilmon.

When Kilmon was first diagnosed, she tried to hide it from others for fear they would discriminate against her. She says that she felt ugly and deformed and was embarrassed and afraid. Now she is reaching out to help others and raise awareness as an active volunteer and national spokesperson for the Arthritis Foundation. She

has already raised more than $32,000 in corporate funds for the Foundation. She was a speaker at the Arthritis Foundation Broward Walk, on May 1, in Markham Park, and is chairing the second annual Arthritis Walk, at Crandon Park, on Nov. 13. She has worked with The Miami Children’s Hospital camp for children who suffer from arthritis.

When she needs to escape from the pain of her disease, she often turns to her Paso Fino horse. Doctors warned her that she would have a hard time riding and maintaining her horse, when she purchased it four years ago. Once again, she defied the odds, when she won 4th place in the Miami International Paso Fino Horse Show last month.

“The medical community cannot stand alone in treating this disease with drugs and surgery,” said Kilmon. “This is why programs of support and education by the Arthritis Foundation are so important. Arthritis sufferers need to empower themselves using the many tools of the Arthritis Foundation. The more we know and get support, the more we can live successful and productive lives.”

Sunshine Kids clubs Brings Southwest Ranches’ Neighborhoods Together BY DEBBY TEicH

e ldita Herreria-Garcia has fond memories of growing up in Miami. She lived on a street with 30 children and they all got together every day after school. They would ride their bikes and play kickball, or just hang out at someone’s

house. Many of them are still her closest friends. She has lived in Southwest Ranches for the past 10 years and has not found it to have the same neighborly feeling. She is hoping that the Sunshine Kids Club will help bridge the gap among the neighbors and provide similar experiences for her children as they grow up.

“Southwest Ranches is a wonderful place to live, but most residents do not know the people who live next door to them,” said Herreria-Garcia. “I want my kids to get to know the other neighborhood children and develop relationships outside of school. I want them to go trick-o-treating on Halloween.” Herreria-Garcia was recently appointed to the Town’s School and Education Advisory Board and met other women in the group who felt the same way she did.

In March, her two children – Katerina, 12, and Nicolas, 8 – started the Sunshine Kids Club in an effort to bring the neighborhood together. They wrote and distributed a flyer, hoping to convince the neighborhood kids to join. “We are all very blessed and fortunate to be growing up here in Southwest Ranches,” they wrote. “We know that we all have really big backyards and are able to enjoy our horses, pools, basketball courts, all sort of pets and even tennis courts for some. What we are missing are neighborhood friends to play with. We hear stories of our Mom’s childhood and how

she and the kids on the block would get together and play on the street every day. We know that those days of playing on the street are long gone and we all have lots of after school activities that keep us busy, including our DS’s and Wii’s, but wouldn’t it be great for our neighborhood kids and parents to get to know each other?”

The kids envisioned a club with play dates, baseball card trading days, bike-a-thons, pet walks, field days, kite flying events, camp outs, trail rides and many other activities. They also wanted the club to be about more than just “playing.” Members could participate in projects to help the neighborhood, raise funds for the Homeowners Association, help neighbors when they are experiencing difficult times or just need a helping hand. They even talked about organizing a big event on Halloween, which might include a Haunted House, trick-o-treating by horseback and lots of candy.

The Sunshine Kids Club is open to 7- to 14-year-olds who live anywhere in Southwest Ranches. It currently has 20 members who meet the third Friday of every month, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Herreria-Garcia’s house. The meeting starts off very structured and ends with free play time and activities that have included swimming, potato sack races, egg tosses and more.

The kids are already planning a variety of community service projects, initially focusing their efforts in their own neighborhood. They applied to Adopt-a-Street in Southwest Ranches and want to participate in other community clean-ups. They plan to participate in the Town’s Partners in Preservation projects, 10-Year Anniversary celebrations and Town Hall restoration. They will also help plant trees left over from an Arbor Day celebration. “It is important for kids to learn the importance of giving back to the community at an early age so we develop a future generation that cares,” said Herreria-Garcia.

Herreria-Garcia recognizes that she is relying on the parents to buy into the concept since the kids are still too young to drive. She is hoping that they will get involved in the club so she will also have an opportunity to get to know some of her neighbors.

The next two meetings for the Sunshine Kids Club are July 16 and Aug. 20. For more information, call 954-252-1259 or 954-252-8500, or send an email to [email protected] or visit www.sunshineranches.org.Katerina and Nicolas Garcia recently started the Sunshine Kids Club in an effort to bring the

neighborhood together.

The Sunshine Kids Club meets every month in Southwest Ranches.

Funies Offers Riding Programs for children with Special Needs BY DEBBY TEicH

M ariale Bustamante, 15, may have Down syndrome, but in many ways she is just like other kids her age. She attends Falcon Cove Middle School, where she recently made the honor roll. She makes her bed; washes her own

clothes; assembles her school lunch and loves to ride her horse. Her parents, Luis and Linda Bustamante, have done everything they can to boost her self confidence and help her become prepared for adult life. They have also reached out to other special needs families through the Funies Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping integrate, educate and instruct special children.

“We are so blessed to have Mariale and we always want her to know just how special she is,” said Luis Bustamante. “We believe that most special needs children are capable of doing almost anything and we just have to find a way to teach them. We want other parents and kids to know that it is possible for special needs children to live a regular life in our society.”

The Bustamante’s started the Foundation several years ago when they were living in Venezuela. They had a difficult time finding information on doctors, teachers and special needs programs and wanted to connect with other families who might be experiencing the same frustrations. When they moved to Weston two years ago, they leased a small farm in Southwest Ranches and started the Foundation in the United States.

They began working with four children and the program grew quickly. In March, they moved it to a larger property in Southwest Ranches to accommodate the 40 children that currently participate. Fifteen of the children have no disability and the other 25 have special needs. “The program integrates the children allowing the special needs children to have a more normal life and helping the non-disabled kids become more sensitive,” said Bustamante.

The equestrian center offers a special program that combines equine assisted activities and structural teaching in order to provide experiences that encourage independence and enhance the lives of special needs children in Broward County. It uses Hippotherapy, Equinotherapy and Therapuetic Riding to help those with Autism, Down Syndrome, Attention Deficit Disorder, developmental delays, head injuries, strokes and other special needs.

During the riding program, the kids meet with a psychologist to address any special issues. They spend time grooming a horse to help increase their confidence

and self esteem. They also have an opportunity to test their riding skills as they are exposed to a creative curriculum that includes vocabulary, math, colors, counting and more. Letters are posted around the riding ring and the kids must lead the horse to each letter to spell a word. They also play a game where they count and identify colors each time they catch a ball.

Throughout the year, there are several special events for the children and their families. On Halloween, the kids come dressed in costume and get to paint a pony. For Christmas, they can attend a dinner party and participate in a gift exchange. The Bustamante’s are also hosts for the Special Olympics Broward County. They spend time training the kids to compete in the Special Olympics. They also host a competition at the ranch every year.

Funies also offers a weekly summer program, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., which runs through July 16. In the morning the kids have an opportunity to interact with the horses and nature. They ride and groom the horses and learn all about farm life. The afternoon consists of sports, swimming, water play, arts and crafts and other special events. The program is limited to 10 kids.

Funies is located at 4700 SW 160th Ave. For more information, call 954-696-8171 or visit www.funies.org.

Linda Bustamante has helped her daughter, Mariale, and other special needs children learn to ride through the Funies Foundation in Southwest Ranches.

Mariale Bustamante, 15, displays one of the many awards she has won during riding competitions.

i wake up in a bad mood…help! If you wake up to the sound of the annoying alarm, you’re dead tired, and feel out of sorts, how do you get up and get excited about your day?

Do A Body ScanGet in the habit of scanning your body. Find the tension areas

and where you are already holding negative energy. Now give it a number one to ten (ten being the worst). Recall a time when that

area was a number one in tension – a more peaceful, relaxing moment for you - and try to go there in your head. Notice your breath during this and count six counts in and six counts out. Keep doing this while you are getting dressed. Then for 30 seconds before you leave your bedroom look up at the ceiling and smile.

Meditate For A Few MomentsAgain, bring your attention to your breath. Each inhalation should bring in positive

energy and each exhalation gets rid of negative energy. Sometimes doing this for 15 minutes is all it will take. If you are still stressed, think of a drawer, a closet and a window in your mind. Put all the small issues in the drawer, larger issues in the closet and the things you cannot control out the window. Now shut everything. Leave the problems, or issues, to be dealt with at a more appropriate time or give them to my higher power (those things I have no control over). Then fill yourself with light from the top of your head down and start your day.

Pay Attention To Nutrition If you ignore your daily nutrient needs, you may find yourself in a bad mood more

often than you want. Be very careful about your food selections. A morning meal of balanced carbohydrates, protein and some fats are ideal.A Consistent Positive Mood

You can proactively work to shift things in your life so that your bad moods occur less often. Change your mental dialogue. Your most dominant thought determines the mood you will be in. Instead of dwelling on the dark and the angry, focus on solutions. Think of the ideal person you want to be and start living their life!Exercise…Exercise…Exercise

Look, from the release of the “feel good” hormones a good old-fashioned sweat will make you feel refreshed. Quite frankly, the harder the workout the better. Our Ultimate Workout at the studio, which combines some time on our cardio equipment where you have a few minutes of “I am uncomfortable,” to muscle routines using dumbbells and straps from the ceiling, that again have moments of “I am uncomfortable,” is the best workout for the person with a lot of stress. Our bodies need that push or else the stress piles up and has nowhere to go. You then become that person who needs medication – or worse – experiences heart issues.

Are You Fatigued?

a re financial pressures, emotional stress, unemployment, poor eating habits, smoking or drugs causing your adrenal glands to fail? Have you felt as though you just cannot

seem to get yourself together? It is hard for you to relax or to get exercise? Do you find that you get sick more often? If so, then you like many others may be experiencing symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue.

What is Adrenal Fatigue? Adrenal Fatigue is a collection of signs and symptoms that results when the adrenal glands function below the necessary level. Most commonly associated with intense or prolonged stress, it can also arise during or after acute or chronic infections. As the name suggest, its paramount symptom is fatigue that is not relieved by sleep. You may look and act relatively normal with adrenal fatigue and may not have any of the signs of physical illness, yet you live with a general sense of un-wellness, tiredness or “gray” feelings. People suffering from adrenal fatigue often have to use coffee, colas, or other stimulants to get going in the morning and to prop themselves up during the day. Although it affects millions of people, conventional medicine does not yet recognize it as a distinct syndrome. Adrenal fatigue can wreak havoc with your life. With each increment of reduction in adrenal function every organ and system in your body is more profoundly affected. Changes occur in your carbohydrate, protein, and fat metabolism, fluid and electrolyte balance, heart and cardiovascular system, and even sex drive. Your body does its best to make up for the under-functioning adrenals, but it does so at a price.

What are the adrenals? No bigger than a walnut and weighing less than a grape, each of your adrenal glands sits like a tiny pyramid on top of a kidney. But don’t let their size fool you; these powerful little endocrine glands manufacture and secrete steroid hormones such as cortisol, estrogen and testosterone that are essential for life, health and vitality. They modulate the functioning of every tissue, organ and glad in your body to maintain homeostasis during stress and keep you alive. They also have important effects on the way you think and feel.

What causes adrenal fatigue? It is produced when you adrenal glands cannot adequately meet the demands of stress. The adrenal glands mobilize your body’s responses to every kind of stress (whether it’s physical, emotional, or psychological) through hormones that regulate energy production and storage, immune function, heart rate, muscle tone, and other processes that enable you to cope with the stress. Whether you have an emotional crises such as a death of a loved one, a physical crises such as major surgery, or any type of severe repeated or constant stress in your life, your adrenals have to respond to the stress and maintain homeostasis. If their response is inadequate, you are likely to experience some degree of adrenal fatigue.

What are some of the key signs and symptoms of adrenal fatigue? Salt cravings, increased blood sugar under stress, increased PMS, perimenopausal, or menopausal symptoms under stress, mild depression, lack of energy, decreased ability to handle stress, muscle weakness, absent mindedness, decreased sex drive, mild constipation altering with diarrhea, as well as many others.

How common is adrenal fatigue? It is estimated that approximately 66% of the population has some degree of low cortisol levels, especially taking into account these severe economic recession we are experiencing. How can I tell if my adrenals are fatigued?

Tendency to gain weight especially at the waist and inability to lose it.Reduced sex drive.Unable to remember things and unclear thinking.Lack of energy in the mornings and also in the afternoon between 3 to 5 p.m.Need coffee or stimulants to get going in the morning.Unexplained hair loss.Crave for salty, fatty, and high protein food such as meat and cheese.

Dr. Therrien Sees the Value in Helping Others

Twenty underprivileged students have seen firsthand the compassion in our community. Dr. Jane Therrien, of Weston Family Eyecare, provided free eye exams and glasses to needy children, including

many who were displaced from their homes in Haiti following January’s devastating earthquake.

Dr. Therrien became aware of their situation from one of her patients, Mr. Mathieu Daquin, a teacher and community leader. He founded the Weston-based International Center 4 Youth Services (IC4YS) to assist youth and families in need of direct services in Broward County. These twenty kids were all students of his at Boyd Anderson High School, where he is a French teacher.

Dr. Therrien says she was so moved by Mr. Daquin’s efforts to help that she felt compelled to offer her professional services free of charge. After each student received a comprehensive eye examination, they were given the opportunity to select a complimentary pair of corrective eyewear.

“These children face so many obstacles and are also severely hindered by the fact that they don’t see properly. I feel blessed to have made a small difference in these bright young kids’ lives,” shares Dr. Therrien.

She believes it is vitally important that children receive routine eye examinations. Twenty-five percent of school age children have undiagnosed vision problems that lead to poor school performance.

Dr. Jane Therrien, of Weston Family Eyecare, provided free eye exams to underprivileged students.

“O besity is poised to overtake smoking as the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., and the majority of those deaths will be directly or indirectly linked to cardiovascular

disease.”Over 70% of the US population is overweight and over 30% is

considered obese. In my prior articles I stated that in order to find a lasting solution to being overweight, one must identify the true root cause of what has gotten us overweight and what keeps us this way. Only then can we implement a strategy/lifestyle - not only

to lose weight but to keep it off. Thinking we can diet sporadically and keep the weight off after resuming our prior nutritional patterns is the re-enactment of the definition of insanity; it simply does not work.

In my last article, I alluded to three points that have contributed to us being overweight. 1) As a consequence of technology and having economic demands on us, we have become sedentary. We often rely on ‘fast food’ or other prepared foods that are relatively inexpensive, high in calories and often not nutritionally balanced. 2) Many of us eat not because we are hungry, but because we are stressed or need to be soothed or because we are bored. The 3rd and probably the most complicated piece to the puzzle is that certain foods are TRULY addicting. The things that we crave affect us like drugs. I contend that the manner in which we respond to and ingest certain foods substantiates that they are both physiologically and psychologically addicting.

Some of us have a closer relationship with food than we do with people. The foods that we think are our friends are not. Because of our connection to certain foods and our desire to ingest them, we are not able to see the reality clearly.

Let me attempt to clarify this but NOT in relationship to food but in relationship to people. Each of us has had close relationships with individuals that seem to change over time. They become more of a burden than of value. Often we struggle; trying to make it work yet the relationship is no longer what it used to be or what we perceived it to be. At some point, we recognize that even though there is a part of us that wants to hold on to it, we realize it is futile. The relationship is too painful and simply not worth it. Thus, we end it and detach from it. Years later many of us may have had the experience of encountering this person again. Often, we find ourselves thinking, ‘I can’t believe that I could have ever had a relationship with that person,’ never caring to see them again…When we are intimately involved in a relationship, we often don’t see what others see. Because of our enmeshment with that person, we lose our objectivity and don’t see how the relationship is toxic and truly not in our best interest.

Many of us have a similar ‘toxic relationship’ with food. In order to better understand this, we need to know more about the foods we eat and their physiologic impact on us. Non-medical people cannot be expected to know the physiologic ramifications of eating certain foods. However, through awareness, many can identify their effects on our behavior, and to some extent, our bodies. Certain foods, soon to be identified, were once thought to be innocuous or even good for us. The reality is, if we consume them in an unbalanced fashion, there are undisputable physiologic consequences. In a sense, we become both enmeshed with and addicted to them. Many of us are neither able nor willing to recognize this at first blush.

All of the foods that we eat and derive energy or calories from fall into three groups: protein, fats and carbohydrates. Most of us get protein from eating animal products such as meats or fish; they may also be found in plants. Fats usually accompany protein from an animal source. Plants may also be a source of fat, typically healthy, i.e. olives, safflower and corn. Plants are also a source of carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates occur in table sugar and fruit. Complex carbohydrates are sugars that are linked together something like beads on a necklace and are in wheat, potato, corn and rice. Wheat is often made into flour which may then be made into bread, pasta, cakes and cookies. All forms of complex carbohydrates when eaten are digested and broken down into sugar. Proteins are digested into amino acids and fats into fatty acids. If we consume a diet that contains more calories than we require, regardless of the source, we gain weight. If we take in fewer calories than we need, we lose weight. America got fat when Americans went on a low fat diet!

In my next article, I will review the evolution of how the Low Fat Diet set the stage for a culinary affair that fueled our addiction to certain foods, specifically carbohydrates and our never ending struggle to lose weight. The awareness of this paradigm can ultimately empower us to gain control over food as opposed to food having control over us!

New center for medical Weight loss Partnerships Promote Health and Wellness BY STAcEY BOmSER

T here’s a reason weight loss is a multi-million dollar industry. Most diets simply don’t work and slowly but surely the scale starts to rise. But that’s not the case at the Center for Medical Weight Loss at University Drive. It provides patients

with a clinical approach to shedding pounds and keeping them off utilizing doctor-managed weight loss programs tailored to individual goals.

Unlike other weight loss programs that focus solely on weight loss through calorie restriction, the Center for Medical Weight Loss (CMWL) treats the whole patient – mind and body. Every patient receives individualized treatment with one-on-one care that includes nutrition, fitness, motivation and counseling. Using a combination of nutritionally-balanced meal replacements and – in some cases – prescription appetite suppressants along with counseling in behavior modification and lifestyle changes, the Center helps ensure long-term weight loss results.

Gabriela Rosenthal is living proof that the program works. “I’ve personally lost more than 130 pounds,” says the weight loss specialist for the Center for Medical Weight Loss at University Drive. And she has maintained her weight loss for almost two years thanks to CMWL’s weight maintenance program.

Now Rosenthal is reaching out into the community to share her inspirational story and educate people about the importance of eating right, being fit and staying healthy. The company has partnered with local businesses to fight obesity.

In September CMWL will co-sponsor a Biggest Loser-type weight loss competition with partner Midtown Athletic Club in Weston. Thirty contestants will compete in “The Ultimate Weight Loss Challenge: Feel Great in Eight” to determine who can lose the most weight in eight weeks. Each week contestants will perform a weigh-in, receive a nutritional consultation and enjoy a relevant lifestyle speaker.

The twist, says Rosenthal, is that there is a buy-in to compete. In exchange, Midtown will offer contestants complimentary use of its facilities -- including fitness equipment, tennis courts and amenities -- as well as two personal training sessions each week.

CMWL, similarly, will provide contestants with a complete medical exam, along with a full body-mass analysis to help them determine how many calories they’ll burn daily.

“We’re looking forward to teaming with CMWL to bring South Floridians this weight-loss challenge,” says Midtown General Manager Steve Strumpf. “It will be an exciting eight weeks for all of us. Our club is committed to providing our members and guests the proper tools to enjoy not only a great club experience, but also a healthier lifestyle.”

According to Rosenthal, prizes will be awarded to those who complete the program. There will also be a grand prize for the male and female contestants who lose the most weight.

Although the CMWL program is not for children, the Center for Medical Weight Loss at University Drive is reaching out to children and teaching them the importance of eating right and staying in shape. “We have partnered with GrowingCooks.com to help develop healthy, nutritional recipes that children will like to eat and prepare,” shares Rosenthal. “We’re creating tasty dishes using high power foods that raise metabolism, such as whole wheat pasta.”

As a mother of four Rosenthal says she is particularly concerned about the growing incidence of childhood obesity. “The mortality rate will be higher for our kids’ generation than ours, even with the advancements in medicine. Sixty-percent of our community is obese. It’s just so accepted today, but it’s not okay!”

This obesity epidemic is taking its toll on America’s workplace. That’s why CMWL has partnered with the South Florida Chamber of Commerce to launch a Corporate Wellness Program.

Designed to assist employees in achieving and maintaining healthier weights and lifestyles, the Center’s program features customized weight loss solutions, on-site weight management and professional fitness training sessions. In addition,

the program includes motivation and lifestyle counseling, nutritional supplements and medication if necessary. “I am also the key note speaker at all South Florida Business-to-Business trade shows and events hosted by the Chamber,” adds Rosenthal.

She has spoken at CMWL training conferences and is featured on billboards, magazines and newspapers as part of a CMWL advertising campaign, “Physicians are Changing the Shape of America.” She also writes several monthly columns on healthy eating, nutrition and exercise.

In addition, Rosenthal has been asked to join the American Diabetes Association’s Executive Committee. According to Katie Hawken, from the South Florida chapter of the American Diabetes Association, Rosenthal was selected to this national post because of her leadership skills to support strategic growth, her ability to engage business, civic and philanthropic leaders, and her proven commitment to improving our community through charitable activity.

At the Center for Medical Weight Loss at University Drive, Rosenthal has partnered with Elisabeth Cohn Gelwasser, MD, who has been providing primary care and internal medicine since 1993. Together they offer a complete menu of personal wellness and weight loss services to the community.

Because all CMWL programs are managed by a physician, the company is able to offer many procedures that other weight loss centers could not. For example, the Center offers fat-burning (lipotropic) injections.

“Lipo-B in an injection of vitamins, minerals and amino acids that are essential to the health of your liver. Your liver is the organ responsible for removing fat and toxins from your body. So if it is healthier, it will work better” explains Rosenthal.

“Lipo-B injection ensures your body receives all the necessary nutrients to keep up your energy. They are safe, effective and an easy way to keep your body well-balanced. They help raise your metabolism and contribute to the success of your weight loss plan.”

The Center also offers ALCAT Testing. A breakthrough in weight loss, this simple blood test can reveal which foods make you fat. The ALCAT Test identifies sensitivities and reactions to more than 300 foods, chemicals and other substances.

“You are what you eat as we have heard for years,” explains Rosenthal. “With the ALCAT Test, we now know that good foods can actually be bad for us, making us fat and even sick. Food sensitivity has a huge impact on our health and once we discover these intolerances and eliminate the trigger foods from our diet, we can shed pounds easier and live a healthier life.”

A fun way to get healthy is by working out with Kangoo Jumps. The CMWL sells these low-impact rebound sports shoes. They look and fit like comfortable ski boots with a giant spring on the bottom for jogging, running and jumping with 80% less impact on the joints and knees. “Jumping provides all the benefits of rebound exercise, which NASA calls the most effective and efficient form of exercise yet devised,” states Rosenthal, who uses these shoes as part of her personal workout routine. In addition to Kangoo Jumps, CMWL offers private or semi-private Pilates, weight training, and self defense fitness classes.

The Center for Medical Weight Loss at University Drive provides a clinical approach to shedding pounds with individualized, doctor-managed weight loss programs. The Center is located at 2209 N. University Drive in Pembroke Pines. For more information, visit www.cmwl.org. To schedule a consultation with weight loss specialist Gabriela Rosenthal, call (954) 966-5700.

minimally invasive Direct Anterior Surgery

T here may be a number of reasons for persistent hip pain. When the pain interferes with day-to-day functioning, and limits a person’s ability to walk normally, sit comfortably or perform daily activities, it’s time to seek medical advice.

In some cases, pain can be resolved with conservative treatments such as ice, physical therapy, rest, activity modification, pain relievers or injections. In other cases, surgery becomes necessary.

Cleveland Clinic Florida’s, Orthopaedic Surgeon Preetesh Patel, MD, specializes in adult hip and knee replacement surgery and says it is important to evaluate each patient to determine a treatment approach that is best for him or her.

“We perform a thorough evaluation of the patient through a medical history, physical examination, x-rays and other imaging to evaluate the cause of hip pain”, Dr. Patel said. “After a thorough examination, if the patient is a candidate for hip replacement surgery, we ensure that he or she fully understands what to expect before, during and after the procedure.”Minimally Invasive Hip Replacement

Cleveland Clinic Florida is one of few facilities offering patients a minimally invasive hip replacement surgery called “direct anterior.” This approach enables the surgeon to insert the hip prosthesis through a small incision at the front of the hip, as opposed to the side or back where the surgeon has to cut through muscles and tendons. Faster Recovery

Due to smaller incisions and less muscle trauma, patients recover faster with the direct anterior approach than with traditional hip replacement surgery. In some instances patients are able to return to work and resume normal activities in as little as two weeks. Patients also endure a much shorter hospital stay and report less pain, which reduces the need for pain medication. The use of assistive devices such as canes and walkers is also substantially reduced. In contrast, the average recovery time with traditional hip replacement surgery is two to six months, making the direct anterior hip replacement surgery an appealing alternative. Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is the key to recovering mobility and can begin the first day after surgery. Cleveland Clinic Florida offers a rehabilitation program with techniques that facilitate patients’ recovery. After physical therapy, patients can usually return to recreational pastimes such as cycling, golf, skiing, tennis and horseback riding. The risk of dislocation is also less using the direct anterior technique. Patients are not required to follow strict precautions as are necessary following other traditional surgical methods.

Sliding Doors Slide into StyleBY FARYAl Ali, BEAUTiFUl WiNDOWS

S liding doors can be a challenge. What are my options? How do I keep the heat out? I want easy-to-operate blinds. I am tired of my verticals and want to update the look. We

had the answers on show at our booth at the Home Design & Remodeling show in Ft. Lauderdale at the Broward Convention Center. Visitors came away with exciting possibilities of what to do to update their tired-looking verticals. Vertical blinds were the main choice a decade ago, but now we suggest replacing those with energy efficient treatments to update your décor and save

you $$$ in energy bills. Come in today to our Beautiful Windows showroom to see our Vertiglides, Sliding Panels, Folding Woven Wood Doors, Plantation Shutters, Motorized Draperies, and Sheer Luminettes.

How important is your view? Vertiglides from Hunter Douglas maximize your view with a small stacking of only 8 ft. Select the Architella Duette fabrics to qualify for up to a $1500 tax rebate. You can have an 8 ft. wide slider installed for around $1290. If your style is more contemporary and clean cut, then look at the Skyline Sliding panels with more than 200 fabrics.

For a Tommy Bahama look, opt for our thermal lined woven wood folding doors, which look terrific with a tropical setting here in Florida. For a chic look, the Hunter Douglas Luminette sheers are fabulous. They open and close like a vertical with the added beauty of a layer of sheer to soften the incoming light and help with the UV. Pleated drapery with lining on a motorized rod is definitely an elegant upgrade as well. So too are Plantation shutters which add elegance and value to your home.

The pictures illustrate the many different options available to you. Visit Beautiful Windows’ Showroom for a hands-on demonstration of our full size displays. Come see the different fabrics and colors we offer. Bring in your sizes for a quick quote and our team of designers will advise on your best option for your specific setting. How to Effectively Wipe Out Second mortgages and lines of credit, Avoid Foreclosure and Stay in Your Home

T housands of homeowners in our community are now upside-down on their home mortgages and are looking for a way out. Some are frustrated in their attempts to modify their home loans, and others simply choose to give up their

home. Wouldn’t it be much easier to save your home if you only had a first mortgage and no other payments? Also, if the market turns around, think of all the equity you could build back up years from now?

For homeowners who have taken out a second mortgage on their home and lines of credit, facing our current economic climate can be particularly challenging. Additional liens on your home beyond your initial mortgage, however, can be wiped out through a Chapter 13 personal bankruptcy filing. When a judge removes mortgage liens from a property during bankruptcy proceedings it is referred to as “stripping”

the lien, a “cram down” or “strip down.” In a Chapter 13, second mortgages and lines of credit against a principal residence, can be stripped down to the appraised value of the home. Many bankruptcy courts follow a rule that makes a second mortgage totally unsecured if the first mortgage exceeds the value of the personal residence.

To qualify, the court will generally require proof that the home is appraised for less than the value of the first mortgage, which can be established through a certified appraisal that is accepted by the court. In an environment where home prices in most markets have fallen at least 30% or more, many borrowers qualify for this option.

Tax liens can also be stripped off in Chapter 13 reorganization proceedings to the extent that the lien does not attach to equity in the property. More importantly, if your income level qualifies, you will be able to catch up on any past due debts (including your home mortgage) through affordable payments spread out over the 3-5 year life of the Chapter 13 bankruptcy plan. Most importantly, none of your creditors will be able to contact you or proceed with a foreclosure during this bankruptcy protection period.

can i Relocate?

i certainly don’t think that it is a coincidence that I am seeing an increase in relocation cases over the past several months. With the unemployment rate at about 12% and housing prices

tumbling, many people are hoping to find “greener pastures”. The fact that many of the residents of South Florida are originally from another location adds to their desire to move “back home”, where they have emotional and perhaps financial support. The problem this desire to relocate creates often times cannot be resolved by a

simple agreement. For example; mom wants to move back to Massachusetts with the parties two minor children. They are either in the midst of a divorce or the divorce has already occurred. Dad is choosing to stay in South Florida and has no desire or intention to move back north. Can mom move? Can dad stop her? The answer to each of these questions is “perhaps”.

The law in Florida allows a parent and the minor children to relocate a maximum of 50 miles from the address where they reside. This of course can cause problems as well. If both parents are involved in the children’s lives, a move of 50 miles can drastically change a time sharing schedule. A relocation of even 10 miles can affect a child’s school district. A change of 50 miles will require, more often than not, a modification of the time sharing schedule. Midweek dinners or morning drives to school with the parent remaining in the area will become impossible.

If a move of just a few miles can alter a time sharing plan, imagine how a relocation of hundreds of miles will affect the status quo. The law does, however; allow for a relocation under certain circumstances. The court must weigh the benefit to the minor children, against the effect it will have on the parent/child relationship. It’s true that the relocating parent may experience better financial circumstances if allowed to move, but how will the parent/child relationship suffer as a result? There are generally no easy answers.

The most important thing to remember is that a parent cannot relocate with a minor child beyond 50 miles without court order or agreement of the other parent. In reality, even a 50 mile change will usually require a modification to be filed, as long as it affects the current time sharing schedule. The parent seeking to relocate must file a petition and fully inform the other parent of his/her intentions; including address of new residence, purpose in moving and a proposed time sharing schedule.

If you are faced with a possible relocation issue I suggest you contact my office at 954-385-9160 and schedule a free consultation.

Doctors Santos and Gadh Expand Services to Better Serve Patients BY STAcEY BOmSER

D r. Jose Santos, Dr. Kompal Gadh and Dr. Sylvia Velarde are dedicated to providing the best medical care to

women of all ages. This should come as no surprise to patients as they are Weston’s premier OB/GYN group.

“We pride ourselves on patient service,” states Kompal Gadh, M.D., F.A.C.O.G, a partner in Gadh and Santos M.D., L.L.C.

“You deserve comprehensive and complete attention to your medical needs, and that’s why we make sure every patient takes precedence over anything else. I am never too busy to see a patient or take her phone call.”

This dedication to providing premier patient care is the cornerstone to this practice. Even though it is a group practice, each doctor attempts to deliver his or her own patients. “Our OB patients appreciate our commitment to providing personalized deliveries,” says Jose Santos, M.D., F.A.C.O.G. “We certainly encourage patients to meet the other doctors in the practice, just in case of an emergency, but all of our pregnancy patients have the piece of mind of knowing that their doctor will be there in the delivery room.”

“All three of us are parents and have been on the other side,” explains Sylvia Velarde, M.D., F.A.C.O.G. “We understand the importance of the doctor-patient relationship and how important it is to a mom to have her doctor there when she delivers. But as a physician, I can also say that I want to be there. We develop a friendship with our patients over those nine months and I want to see the baby. Do they look like mommy or daddy? I want to know just as much as the parents.”

That is also one of Dr. Gadh’s favorite things about the job. “I love what I do! There is nothing more rewarding than watching a baby’s first heartbeat on the ultrasound and seeing the family’s excitement and then delivering that baby into their welcoming arms months later.”

The practice specializes in all aspects of obstetrics and gynecology. “We offer a full range of well-woman care, from routine check-ups and ambulatory surgeries to infertility and high risk pregnancy,” notes Dr. Santos, adding that the practice works with perinatologists in the Weston and Pembroke Pines areas to care for high-risk patients.

In addition to complete gynecological care, the doctors also provide counseling on the various life cycle changes. Dr. Velarde has an interest in adolescent health and sees many teenage patients. “I try to spend extra time with them so that they feel comfortable enough with me to ask any questions they might have. Many times young girls prefer to discuss private issues with me rather than their parents. I am here to listen to them and provide guidance without judging.”

The three doctors have known each other for over five years. Dr. Gadh’s first job after her residency was with Dr. Santos. And Dr. Velarde joined his practice after relocating to South Florida from Indiana.

Dr. Santos has been in practice here in the Weston community for over twenty years. In fact, he was part of the first OB/GYN practice to open in Weston back in 1989. While the other doctors have either left medicine or the community, Dr. Santos is proud to continue to serve the women of Weston. “I’ve been in practice here so long I am now seeing a second generation of patients.”

Ever since they first met, Dr. Santos and Dr. Gadh say they have been in sync. One of the long-term goals of each doctor was to offer aesthetic care to patients.

“Patients have always asked me for advice on where to go for skin care,” shares Dr. Santos. “For a long time I have wanted to be able to provide this service. I consider it

a natural evolution as we expand to better serve the needs of our patients.”

Dr. Gadh says she has also been interested in the medical aesthetics. “My mother-in-law is in the beauty business and owns Beauty Center stores in Weston Town Center and Davie. I always knew I wanted to open a med-spa and offer these services to my patients.”

The two recently opened Allure Aesthetics adjacent to their medical practice. The full-service med-spa offers a private waiting room, consultation room and two procedure rooms.

Allure Aesthetics is devoted to revitalizing skin, inside and out, with the latest in advanced medical aesthetic procedures and medical-grade skin care products for both men and women.

A licensed esthetician works closely with each client to customize a treatment plan for healthier, more youthful-appearing skin. This may include the use of facials, skin rejuvenation therapy, chemical peels or injectables such as Botox, Juvederm and Latisse.

“We offer personalized, non-surgical approaches to treat most cosmetic problems, but what truly distinguishes us is our medical knowledge, personal attention, and natural results,” states Dr. Santos, noting that all medical procedures, including injections, are performed by either he or Dr. Gadh.

Patients have the confidence of knowing that their procedure is being performed by a licensed medical doctor who has undergone extensive training to perform these cosmetic procedures. “If anything, I think we are extra careful because we have so much knowledge of medicine and, albeit rare, the complications that could happen,” adds Dr. Gadh.

Allure Aesthetics is excited to offer clients the revolutionary Sapphire Skin Rejuvenation Therapy. It is the only facility in West Broward to offer this unique microdermabrasion procedure. “This product is truly amazing. You can see the results immediately,” claims Dr. Gadh. “And the beauty of this therapy is that is good for everyone; it’s safe for all ages and skin types.”

To further enhance patient results, Allure Aesthetics offers a private line of skin care products. These are all dermatological-grade products available only through a doctor’s office. “I have tried these products myself and the results are excellent,” states Dr. Gadh.

In addition, Allure Aesthetics’ experienced esthetician performs a host of facial services, as well as waxing and pregnancy massage, a natural complement to the medical practice’s prenatal services. The med-spa will soon be offering laser therapy including hair removal and skin tightening.

Both the OB/GYN practice and Allure Aesthetics are accepting new patients. Both offices are located with in the Town Center Professional Campus at 1601 Town Center Boulevard in Weston. Office hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00am until 5:00pm. To schedule an obstetrics or gynecology appointment call (954) 384-2522. The doctors have another OB/GYN office at Memorial Hospital West, 603 N. Flamingo Road, Suite 360A in Pembroke Pines. Dr. Santos, Dr. Gadh and Dr. Velarde all have privileges at this hospital and all patients deliver at this facility. To learn more about the doctors or their practice visit www.obgynweston.com or www.obgynpines.com. To schedule a complimentary consultation at Allure Aesthetics call (954) ALLURE5. Evolution Wellness center Opens in Davie BY DEBBY TEicH

n FL All Pro Sam Madison, his wife Saskia Madison, Olympic runner Jayson Jones and wide

receiver Davone Bess were among the many guests who helped owner Kimberly Marin celebrate the grand opening of the Evolution Wellness Center’s new location in Davie. The Center is the perfect place for clients to rejuvenate their bodies, minds, spirits and souls.

The wellness center and spa specializes in providing acupuncture, massage, facial rejuvenation and other holistic and therapeutic treatments. It is dedicated to the total well-being of its clients, who suffer from chronic or acute pain, allergies, obesity, insomnia, depression, or just need a quick lift. It offers clients a relaxing experience from the moment they arrive to the sounds of spa music and smells of

essential oils burning. “We know that our clients are stressed and we want the Center to be a sanctuary for them,” said Marin. “They can turn off their phones and shut out the world while they spend 60 minutes focusing on themselves.”

Marin is a licensed and board certified acupuncture physician and registered dietitian and oversees all of her clients’ treatment plans using a holistic approach.

“Many people focus on external treatments and applications to maintain youth, health, and beauty but tend to neglect the beauty that comes from the inside out,” said Marin.

“By addressing the aging and disease process both internally and externally, clients see better results and quicker response time than typical standard treatments.”

Marin became interested in acupuncture many years ago after her son was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome at age 3 ½. As a dietician, she tried placing him on a program of regimented supplementation, but did not see any change. She turned to NAET, a natural allergy elimination technique, and saw results almost immediately. She was so impressed that she decided to become trained in the procedure and still uses it today in her practice. As she learned more about traditional Chinese medicine, the foundation of NAET, she continued on the path to becoming an acupuncture physician. “I fell in love with the power of this ancient medicine,” said Marin. “It has been used for over 2,500 years to help people heal their bodies, minds, spirits, and souls. I feel honored and privileged to have learned these methods.”

Accupuncture is typically used to treat pain-related issues, but it can also be beneficial for insomnia, anxiety, fertility and female problems which are chronic in nature. The Center uses an Acugraph to help analyze and document the energetic status of a person’s acupuncture meridians. The computerized device compares the

results in a graph form, which helps the patient understand the problem areas and enables the acupuncturist to provide the best treatment.

Many clients visit the Center for a variety of facials, body treatments and massages. Therapists use the Hungarian Eminence Organic Skin Care line which includes

natural products with the allure of fresh scents and ingredients like fresh fruit pulps and seeds. Some of the facials include Microdermabrasion, a facial rejuvenation, a parsley and cucumber oxygenating facial, rosehip and maize exfoliation, a paprika herbal treatment and more. Some of the body treatments include a blueberry soy slimming body wrap, Cell-u-less herbal wrap herbs, a chocolate truffle body wrap and a paraffin hand antioxidant treatment. The Center also offers a variety of massages including a custom massage, deep tissue massage, prenatal massage, hot stone massage, Thai massage, Reflexology and Reiki.

The Wellness Center offers two different programs to help clients lose weight. There is a rapid weightloss program, for those who want to lose an average of one pound per day, as well as a program that focuses more on a change in lifestyle, producing an average loss of 2 ½ pounds per week. The programs use a variety of tools including hypnotherapy sessions; consultations with registered dietitians; acupuncture sessions and turbosonic sessions.

Many clients visit the Wellness Center because they want to stop smoking. The Center offers a smoking cessation package that includes laser acupuncture for the ear to address detoxification and withdrawal symptoms, hypnotherapy sessions, and the use of a special machine that “programs” cigarettes so that they actually become an isopathic remedy for smoking cessation.

NFL All Pro Player and former Miami Dolphin Sam Madison visited the Evolution Spa after injuring both knees and ankles. “Playing football for years definitely left wear and tear on my body,” said Madison. “There were some mornings when I could hardly get out of bed and walk. Thanks to acupuncturists at Evolution Wellness, I am pain free.” His wife, Saskia, is also a client. “They have the most relaxing massages and facials,” said Saskia. “When I leave Evolution Wellness Center I feel as though I have been on a mini vacation.”

The Wellness Center is currently offering a VIP membership. For only $69 per month, clients can chose a facial, massage or acupuncture session each month. Any other service is only $59, including a 50 minute massage, 60 minute organic facial or 45 minute acupuncture session. VIP members also get 15% off of any other services or products.

The Evolution Wellness Center is located at 4789 SW 148th Avenue, Suite 202, in Davie. For more information, call 954-880-0202 or visit www.evowellness.com.
