COVER STORY THURSDAY 22 JUNE 201704

Irfan Bukhari The Peninsula

“My Eid Mubarak Storybook is a new children’s book that celebrates beauty of traditions and diversity,” said Omer Naqi, a Cana-

dian of Pakistani origin now settled in Doha. He never considered himself as a storyteller or a writer until he became a father.

Observing his children has made him real-ise that all children learn and absorb information differently. His elder daughter is a visual learner, who loves pictures, pop-up books, and the younger one is influenced by the digital era, pre-ferring to use a smart device to listen to stories.

Omer endeavours to use children’s illustra-tion books, using both physical and digital space, to reach out to parents world to connect with their children and enjoy a good bedtime story!

Q. Can you tell us a little about the Book?People around the world celebrate different

festivals and joyous holidays throughout the year. Whether it is Christmas, Diwali, or Eid, it is won-derful to see everyone comes together and celebrate the holidays.

The Eid Mubarak Storybook is a fun and exciting book that teaches children about the traditions of Eid. The book is about my daugh-ters Emaan, Inaaya, Noorah, and their friends as they get ready to celebrate Eid.

The book consists of nine short stories, each touching upon the different aspects of Eid. The characters range from infant to pre-teens, all having one common goal: they are looking for-ward to celebrating the festival. Children will

enjoy reading the book again and again, and par-ents will love to read it to their children.

It can be used as a tool to learn about a dif-ferent culture and teach children to be

open-minded to diverse experiences in today’s modern world. The book also teaches kids to be smart about spending money and charity.

Q. Why did you write this book?

I describe myself as a Global citizen. Having lived and worked in Pakistan, Canada, USA, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha, I have come to really understand, value and appreciate multi-culturalism.

The book is a reinforce-ment of these and a reminder to us of how important Eid is. Actually, it’s a reminder on how

important all holidays are. The book is about togetherness and enjoy-

ing and celebrating festivals together as a family. I want to reach out to parents worldwide to con-nect with their children while enjoying a good bedtime story.

Q. How have you been promoting the book and what is next for you?

TorontoThis has been a really busy year for me. I

launched the book in March this year in Toronto and held 2 book readings there. The response has been great, and I will be going back to Toronto in June to hold 2 more book reading ses-sions there.

DohaDoha has been really kind and the feedback

has been so positive. My book reading event on April 5th was really well received and well attended. Over the past month I had the oppor-tunity to do 2 book readings at Doha based Schools. I was part of Newton International School’s Literacy week and Book Fair, and did a special book reading there. I also did a book reading at Loydence Academy in Doha.

An ideal Eid book for children

Page 5: DT Page 01 June 22 - The Peninsula · 2017. 6. 22. · power point presentation thus ... or Eid, it is won-derful to see everyone comes together and ... in Dubai before Eid Ul Adha

PakistanI am really excited about my 3 City road-

show in Pakistan in May. I will travel to Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore for 8 Events at various educational institutions, special needs centers and book stores.

JordanA friend of mine is travelling to Jordan to

volunteer with Syrian Refugees and she is tak-ing a copy of my book with me to read to the children. Just to know that I will be a part of that is a really good feeling!

DubaiThese days I am also busy planning an event

in Dubai before Eid Ul Adha (in August).

What’s next?I am also working on two more Children’s

Books on the theme of togetherness for publi-cation in 2018.

Q. Who is the audience of your book? This book is for parents and children alike.

For people who celebrate Eid, and for people who don’t.

Q. What is the key message you give in your book?

The book focuses on what brings us together, not what divides us. We need to see diversity as a source of strength not weakness. Learning about different cultures and teach-ing our kids to be open-minded to diverse experiences is exactly what we need in today’s society.

Needless to say, all parents endeavour to instil good family values in their children. If you look at the current socio-political environ-ment, we want to teach our children that they must choose Diversity over Division in their day-to-day lives.

Q. What makes your book different from others like it in the market?

There are not many titles out there in the Children’s book genre about Ramadan, Eid etc. and certainly not enough illustration books. My wife Naima and I always struggled to find age-relevant content for their kids.

The book is also different because I am launching it as an e-Book and an audio book to cater to all children, realising that kids have

different styles of learning and absorbing infor-mation. So experience the book at bedtime as a paperback, or listen to it in the car with your headphones on as an audio book, or enjoy read-ing it on your smart device as an eBook.

Q. How can you order the book? The book is available online for worldwide

shipping from Amazon.com, Barnesandnoble.com and www.omernaqi.com

It is available as a Hardcover, Paperback, eBook and Audio book as well.

Q. How can your readers reach you / con-nect with you?

I love connecting with my readers to get first hand feedback. So if you are a parent read-ing to your kids, or if you are a child who liked the book, please connect with me. Tell me what story you liked the best? Who was your favorite character. I would love hearing from you.

You can purchase your copy on Xlibris.com as a Hardcopy, Paperback or eBook.

Worldwide shipping is also available from Amazon.com and Barnesandnoble.com

HEALTH THURSDAY 22 JUNE 201708

Raising hope for a novel treat-ment for Alzheimer’s disease, researchers have found that

a plant extract used for centuries in traditional medicine in Nigeria could form the basis of a new drug to treat the progressive brain disorder that impairs memory.

The study, published in the jour-nal Pharmaceutical Biology, has shown that the extract taken from the leaves, stem and roots of Car-polobia lutea could help to protect chemical messengers in the brain which play a vital role in functions, including memory and learning. The tree extract could pave the way for new drugs to tackle patient symptoms but without the unwanted side-effects associated with some current treatments, the study said. “As a population we are living longer, and the number of people with dementia is growing at an alarming rate. Our findings sug-gest that traditional medicines will provide new chemicals able to tem-per Alzheimer’s disease

progression,” said lead researcher Wayne Carter from University of Nottingham in Britain.

Carpolobia lutea, known more commonly as cattle stick, is a small shrub found native to Central and West Africa. Herbalists in Nigerian tribes use the essence of the root as an aphrodisiac and the treatment of genitourinary infections, gingi-vitis, and waist pains. In patients with Alzheimer’s disease and other diseases such as Parkinson’s dis-ease and myasthenia gravis, the activity of the neurotransmitter ace-tylcholine is reduced, leading to problems with memory and attention.

The researchers found that the Carpolobia lutea plant was highly effective in preventing the break-down of acetylcholine and also had other beneficial antioxidant prop-erties in fighting free radicals — the unstable atoms that can cause dam-age to cells and contribute to ageing and disease, that may be exacer-bated in Alzheimer’s disease.

People who go to bed late appear to have less control over their obsessive

thoughts, according to results of a small study.

“That we find that there are spe-cific negative consequences of sleeping at the wrong times, that’s something to educate the public about,” said Meredith Coles, Pro-fessor of Psychology at Binghamton University, State University of New York. The researchers monitored 20 individuals diagnosed with Obses-sive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) — a common chronic disorder that leads to repetitive behaviour — and 10 individuals with OCD-like symptoms during one week of sleep.

Participants completed sleep diaries and daily ratings of per-ceived degree of control over obsessive thoughts and ritualised behaviours. The researchers found that previous night’s bedtime sig-nificantly predicted participants’ perceived ability to control their obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviour on the subsequent day.

“We’re really interested in how

this kind of unusual timing of sleep might affect cognitive functioning,” said Jessica Schubert from Univer-sity of Michigan Medical School.

“One possibility is impulse con-trol. It might be that something about shifting the timing of your sleep might reduce your ability to control your thoughts and your behaviours,” Schubert said.

“So it might make it more likely that you’re going to have a hard time dismissing intrusive thoughts char-acteristic of obsessions, and it might make it more difficult for you to refrain from compulsive behaviours that are designed to reduce the anx-iety caused by obsessive thoughts,” Schubert added.

Your iPhone will soon be a personal hub for medical information. Apple is work-

ing with a small start-up to add diagnostic data to your device, bridging the gap for hospitals to access vital patient data within minutes.

Apple is working with a small start-up Health Gorilla, said a CNBC report. Health Gorilla is specifically working to add diagnostic data including blood work, by integrat-ing with hospitals, lab-testing companies such as Quest and Lab-Corp and imaging centres.

The start-up, which has raised just $5m in funding, specialises in giving doctors a complete picture of patient health history, according to its website. Apple is attempting to bridge the gap where hospitals struggle to access vital data about

their patients at the point of care. This initiative is aimed at solv-

ing the problem by making the patient the centre of their own care.

“The goal is to give iPhone users

the tools to review, store and share their own medical information, including lab results, allergy lists and so on,” the report said.

Though Apple has also been

focusing on aggregating fitness information, this new initiative may be deemed as a deviation.

According to Health Gorilla investor True Ventures, the start-up CEO Steve Yaskin founded the company after a doctor friend of his was frustrated with the process of transferring patients’ diagnostic test results. “The startup is prima-rily geared to physicians and serves as a marketplace for them to place orders and share medical records,” the report noted. But it also has a free offering for patients, which promises to gather up medical information in 10 minutes.

Apart from Apple that is focus-ing on health aspects of its customers, Microsoft has had a por-tal called Health Vault, while Google’s project Google Health shut down in 2011.

Deviled eggs take to a Mid-dle Eastern treatment so well, this might become

your new favorite way to enjoy them.

Make Ahead: The eggs can be cooked up to 1 week in advance; refrigerate in an airtight container. The filling can be refrigerated a day or two in advance.

6 servings (makes 24 halves)

Ingredients12 hard-cooked eggs1/2 cup homemade or store-

bought hummus2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive

oilWater, as needed2 tablespoons za’atar

StepsCut the eggs in half lengthwise.

Separate the whites and yolks and

make sure the egg white halves have no trace of cooked yolks. (You may wish to slice a thin layer off the bottoms of each one, for stability.)

Place the egg yolks in a mixing bowl, along with the hummus, lemon juice and oil. Mash with a fork or use an immersion (stick) blender to blend until creamy and smooth.

Just before serving, spread some za’atar on a small plate. Working with one egg white half at a time, invert into a small bowl

of water, then transfer to the dish of za’atar, lightly pressing to coat the flat surface of the egg white half.

Spoon or pipe a tablespoon of the filling into each egg white half. Sprinkle the filling with a little more za’atar.

Serve with crema or sour cream, crumbled queso fresco, shaved iceberg lettuce and chopped cilantro.

Make Ahead: You may have some sauce left over, which can be refrigerated for up to 5 days. Stir well before using.

4 to 6 servings

IngredientsFor the enchiladas2 dried mulato chiles (dried

poblanos; may substitute ancho chiles, see headnote)

2 dried guajillo chilesBoiling water1/4 white onion2 cloves garlic6 ounces (3/4 cup) no-salt-

added, canned diced tomatoes and their juices

1/2 teaspoon dried oregano1/2 teaspoon ground cuminSaltCanola oil or rice bran oil, for

the pan6 to 8 good-quality soft corn

tortillasFor the filling1 white onion2 cloves garlic1 jalapeño pepper1/4 cup rice bran or canola oilSalt, 2 cups no-salt-added,

canned tomatoes and their juices1 pound medium-to-large

peeled, deveined raw shrimp

StepsFor the enchiladas: Stem and

seed the chiles. Place in a medium heatproof bowl and cover with boil-ing water. Let soak for about 20

minutes, until softened.Meanwhile, make the filling:

Finely chop the onion and garlic. Stem and seed the jalapeño, then cut into small dice.

Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once the oil shimmers, add the onion, garlic and jalapeño, stirring to coat. Sea-son lightly with salt. Cook for about 5 minutes, until softened, then stir in the tomatoes and their juices. Once the mixture begins bubbling, reduce the heat to medium-low and cook for 10 to 12 minutes, so some of the liquid reduces.

Coarsely chop the shrimp, then season them lightly with salt. Add to the skillet and use a large wooden spoon to mash some of them. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes, just until evenly

opaque. Turn off the heat.Drain the chiles, reserving 1/4

cup of their soaking water. Tear the chiles and place them in a food processor. Chop the onion and gar-lic, adding those ingredients to the chiles as you work.

Add the tomatoes and their juices, the oregano, cumin and a pinch of salt; puree until smooth, adding some of the reserved soak-ing water, as needed. The yield is about 2 cups. Pour into a wide, shal-low bowl.

Heat a few teaspoons of oil on a griddle or in a large, separate skil-let over medium-high heat.

Working in batches, coat both sides of each tortilla in the red sauce on the plate, then transfer to the skillet and fry for about 30 seconds.

Use tongs to turn it over, then cook on the second side for about 30 sec-onds. Transfer to individual plates (preferably warmed).

Fill a red tortilla with 1/2 to 3/4 cup of the shrimp filling, depend-ing on how many you’re serving. Fold the tortilla over, like a taco, or roll it loosely.

Repeat to use all the tortillas and filling. Serve warm or at room temperature with the garnishes mentioned in the headnote.

BOLLYWOOD THURSDAY 22 JUNE 201712

Veteran actor Anil Kapoor, who is geared up for his upcoming comedy film

‘Mubarakan’, says that surviving in the Hindi film industry for over three decades is not an easy thing.

“...I am working in this industry for last 38 years and in these years, I did various kind of roles and sur-viving in this industry for 38 years is not easy thing to achieve. I feel, I must have done something right in all these years to hold my position in the industry.” Anil said at the trailer launch of “Mubarakan”.

The 60-year-old, who made his Bollywood debut with Padmini Kol-hapure in “Woh Saat Din”, also advised young actors to do films which are family entertainers.

“I want to urge all young actors to do family entertainers which

have comedy, emotion and drama if they want to play longer innings in the industry. Films which have entertainment and message is the best combination to have as an actor and ‘Mubarakan’ has all ingre-dients of typical commercial family entertainer,” he said.

“Mubarakan” is directed by Anees Bazmee. This is the fifth time the actor and the director have collaborated.

Talking about working with Bazmee, Anil said: “After long time, I am working in a family entertainer. Anees has one specialty in his films that when you see his earlier films like ‘No entry’, ‘Welcome’, ‘Wel-come Back’ or films written by him like ‘Deewana Mastana’ or ‘Laadla’, there is not a single double mean-ing dialogue in it so it’s always

honour and privilege to work with him who is one of great director of the industry.”

Actor Arjun Kapoor, who was also present for the trailer launch was asked about the increasing trend of double role movies as his

friend and actor Varun Dhawan is also coming up with a double role in the film “Judwaa 2”.

“Actors are doing double role since last 40-50 years. I have already done a film which had dou-ble role and now Varun is also doing double role in ‘Judwaa 2’ and I feel only concept of double role in both films will be similar and stories of both films will be completely poles apart,” Arjun said.

He added: “I feel without com-paring, each other’s film, if these two films are able to entertain peo-ple and hold its unique identity then there is no better thing than this.” This is the first time Arjun and Anil will be seen sharing the screen. The film, which also stars Athiya Shetty and Ileana D’Cruz, is slated to release July 28.

Kabir Khan focuses on polit-ical conflicts and how that affects humanity with most

of his films like “Bajrangi Bhaijaan”, “Ek Tha Tiger”, “New York” and “Kabul Express”. The filmmaker says though he is aware that a film cannot bring any change in a soci-ety, he believes the power of cinema can impact the human mind.

His forthcoming film “Tube-light”, featuring superstar Salman Khan and his brother Sohail, is set in the backdrop of the India-China war of 1962.

Asked whether his films reflect his political views, Kabir said: “Absolutely! Like the way a painter paints to express his view, I as a filmmaker make films to express my viewpoint, my perspective on things. My ideology comes out in my films and I believe that we should have our ideology, without that we would be animals.”

He added: “I know that a film cannot change the society but it can start a dialogue. I believe that a film is a powerful medium to make you think about things at least for once. It is not powerful enough to change the society; but hey, the fact that a film can make people think and discuss something itself is powerful enough.”

“Tubelight” revolves around two brothers and

how their lives get affected by the India-China war. Kabir believes that war should not be the prime but the last solution to resolve an issue.

“War cannot be a solution to any issue, it takes lives of thousands of civilians from both sides of the countries who are involved in a war. We should not take war so lightly where our soldiers and civilians are dying! It should be the last resort,” he said. Kabir, who has made most of his films on Indo-Pak relations, points out that “terrorism not just

affects us but another side of the border too. “Tube-light” features Chinese actress Zhu Zhu, who is playing a pivotal role that captures an interesting situation of that era. Giving an insight to that, Kabir shared: “Till 1962, around 20,000 Chinese families used to live in the eastern part of the country, espe-cially in Kolkata (then Calcutta) that came there say around 1860 for business and their livelihood. “But during the India-China war, Indian army suspected them as China loyalists and around 10,000 of were picked up by the army and put into a camp near Rajasthan. That broke their hearts because they were born in India of Chinese origin and lived for generations. So, in our film, Zhu Zhu is playing one of those characters.”

“Tubelight” is releasing tomorrow.

‘enriching’ journey

Veteran actor Anupam Kher has thanked the Indian film industry for making his journey enriching.

“Namaste! On my way to the premier of my 500th movie ‘The Big Sick’ in New York. Thank you Indian Film Industry for mak-ing my journey enriching,” Anupam tweeted. He also shared a photograph of himself from the Global Legionnaire Of Laughter event held in New York. “Hon-oured, proud and humbled to be recognised as a Global Legionnaire Of Laughter at the Jerry Lewis hosted event in New York,” Anupam captioned the image.

As the Internet of Things (IoT) is transforming how we live, BlackBerry’s ‘Enterprise of

Things’ will now transform how we work as the Canadian company announced productivity and secu-rity enhancements to its enterprise software platform.

As part of “BlackBerry Secure” platform, BlackBerry “Enterprise Mobility Suite” provides secure, management policies and controls across key platforms, including iOS, Android, Windows 10, macOS, and Samsung Knox and device owner-ship models.

“The explosion of devices and consumer applications is making it increasingly difficult for enterprises to balance information security and compliance with productivity and connectivity,” said Billy Ho,

Executive Vice President of Enter-prise Software at BlackBerry.

“We offer a Unified Endpoint Management platform that lets companies secure and manage these devices, plus the associated

applications. By making it easier to use, we are removing one of the biggest IT challenges -- getting employees to use corporate appli-cations,” Ho added.

The solution can be delivered

on premises, as a cloud service and now includes new features to improve productivity and security. Consumers can manage and secure Microsoft Office 365 Mobile appli-cations such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint from BlackBerry.

Users of “BlackBerry Access” will now be able to securely work with business data on their personal or BYOL (Bring-Your-Own-Laptop) Windows 10 and MacOS computers.

“BlackBerry Analytics” can now track daily and monthly active users, daily minutes used, usage by OS type and version, daily launch count and user engagement by feature.

BlackBerry has extended its endpoint management software capabilities to include modern workforce devices such as smart glasses. Applications specific to wearables can also be securely managed.

Facebook ‘bots’ write own language, start communicating sans humansADDING to the fear that full artificial intelligence (AI) could spell the end of the human race, researchers from the Facebook Artificial Intelligence Research lab (FAIR) have found that while they were busy trying to improve chatbots, the “dialog agents” were creating their own language. Soon, the bots began to deviate from the scripted norms and started communicat-ing in an entirely new language which they created without human input, The Verge reported. Using machine learning algorithms, the “dialog agents” were left to converse freely in an attempt to strengthen their conversa-tional skills. The researchers also found these bots to be incredibly crafty negotiators. “After learning to negotiate, the bots relied on machine learn-ing and advanced strategies in an attempt to improve the outcome of these negotiations,” the report said. “Over time, the bots became quite skilled at it and even began feigning interest in one item in order to ‘sacrifice’ it at a later stage in the negotiation as a faux compromise,” it added.

Instagram adds Live video replay to ‘Stories’SAN FRANCISCO: Photo-sharing app Instagram has announced it will introduce an option to share a replay of a user’s Live video to ‘Sto-ries’ feature for 24 hours. “We’re also celebrating 250 million daily users on Instagram ‘Stories’, up from 200 million announced in April,” the company said. Previously, all Live broadcasts disappeared once finished. That made them feel raw, spontaneous and urgent to watch. Starting June 21, “we’re introducing the option to share a replay of your Live video to Instagram ‘Stories’. Now, more of your friends and fol-lowers can catch up on what they missed”, Instagram said. When your broadcast has ended, you’ll be able to tap “Share” at the bottom of the screen to add your replay to Instagram ‘Stories’ for 24 hours. You can also tap the toggle and choose “Discard” and your Live video will dis-appear from the app as usual.

Apple-1 — the Cupertino-based tech giant’s first computer which debuted in 1976 and kicked off what would eventually become the world’s most profitable company — has been bought by an uni-

dentified person for $365,000. According to a Fortune report, auction house Christie’s sold the original and working Apple-1 computer at an auction at its New York City office last week.

Although there were similar computers on sale from other manufac-turers, Apple-1 came with a pre-assembled motherboard, which “put Apple far ahead of its competitors”, according to Christie’s auction listing. It is speculated that the recent Apple-1 sold at a lower price as it wasn’t a

“pure” machine with extras like a green case and a different computer chip. In previous autions, one Apple-1 sold for as much as $905,000 and another for $671,400. According to Christie’s, nearly 50 historic Apple-1 comput-ers still exist, with many being displayed at museums around the world like at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC.
