    Introduction

DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line

you can get high speed internet access overyour traditional phone line

DSL service is known as an "always-oninternetservice

DSL is capable of providing up to Mbp,andsupports voice ,video and data.

The new dsl network is IP-centric

    ADSL .

ADSL Stands for asymmetric digital subscriberline

Asymmetric word is used because The data canflow faster in one direction than the other.

Data transmission has faster downstream tothe subscriber than upstream

Digital word is used because All data is purely

digitalSubscriber Line - The data is carried over asingle twisted pair copper loop to the subscriberpremises

    ADSL Modulation

Modulation is the process of varying one or more properties ofa high frequency periodic waveform , called the carrier signal, with respect to a modulating signal.

There are two standards for modulating the ADSL signal:

    -Carrierless Amplitude Phase (CAP)

    -Discrete Multi-Tone (DMT)

    14/21

Carrierless Amplitude PhaseIt is nonstandard version of quadrature

    amplitude modulation(QAM).

It divides the available space into three bands.

The range from 0 to 4 kHz is allocated for POTStransmissions.

The range of 25 kHz to 160 kHz is allocated forupstream data traffic

and the range of 240 kHz to 1.5 MHz is allocatedfor downstream data traffic.

    Discrete Multi-tone (DMT)

The basic idea of DMT is to split the availablebandwidth into a large number of subchannel.

It is able to allocate data so that the throughputof every single subchannel is maximized.

If some subchannels can not carry any data, itcan be turned off and the use of availablebandwidth is optimized.
