DSL Types

All types of DSL service fall into one of two basic categories:

Symmetric Asymmetric - SDSL -ADSL

- SHDSL -RADSL

- HDSL -VDSL

• Speed dependent on distance and signal frequency


DSL Advantages / Disadvantages

Pros High-speed download (up to 5

Mbps)

Business – Level DSL service offers guaranteed data rates.

Lets you surf the Net and gab on the same line at the same time

Cons Not every phone line will work;

no easy way to find out if yours does.

Speed drops as you get further from phone company central office.

Not as widely available as Cable


DSL Security

DSL has a slight advantage over Cable when it comes to security

DSL in a given neighborhood do not appear as nodes on a LAN

DSL uses dedicated rather than shared cabling.


DSL Cost

Less Expensive• DSL has more variance between service package and

price.

• DSL is said to be cheaper than Cable by up to 50%.

Price Range• DSL likes to keep its price constant, high $20’s, low

$30’s.

May place limits on data downloads and uploads.

Cable Security


Uses a shared cable line to provide service to an entire

neighborhood DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification)

Cable Cost


Much more expensive than DSL.

Cheaper if purchased bundled with other services:• Television
