DSCC Alumni Friends Newsletter of Dyersburg State Community College - November 2014 On October 10, 2014, the DSCC Alumni Association honored two outstanding alumni, Randall Hooker and Karen Bell. Randall Hooker graduated from Peabody High School in 2004. He received an Associate of Science Degree in Business with an emphasis in Accounting from Dyersburg State in 2011. He then earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from UT Martin the following year in December of 2012. Throughout his college career, he worked two jobs and remained faith- ful to his church. Randall has been employed at First Citizen’s National Bank in Dyersburg since 2008. He started his career there as a Teller, and then progressed to Customer Service Representative. He was then promoted to his current position as a Financial Experience Specialist. He is a member of both the DSCC Alumni Association and the UTM Alumni Association. While attending Dyersburg State, he was an honorary member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Randall currently resides in Dyersburg. Karen Bell graduated from Dyersburg State in 1984 with an Associate of Science degree in Office Careers. She then completed her Bachelor’s degree at Union University in 1989. Karen then went on to earn a Master of Science degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from Memphis State University in 1992. She also earned a Master of Business Administration degree from UT Martin in 1997 and received certification as a Certified Mu- nicipal Finance Officer in 2010. Karen was recognized by the Lambuth University School of Business and Economics as an outstanding leader in the community. She served on the Board of the Jackson-Madison County School Board for eight years. She served on the board of the Leadership University for the Jackson-Madison County Chamber of Commerce and was recognized as outstanding female leader in the Jackson-Madison County community while on the school board. While attending Dyersburg State, Karen was a member of the office administration student organization and served as President. She was also awarded the Top Graduate Award for 1983-1984. Karen and her husband Howard currently reside in Jackson. They have a son, Zachary, age 25 and a daughter Chelsea, age 21. On October 10, 2014, the DSCC Alumni Association honored two outstanding alumni, Randall Hooker and Karen Bell.

DSCC and TSU Reverse Transfer/Dual Admissions agreementDyersburg State Community College (DSCC) and Tennessee State University (TSU) met on Wednesday, October 15 to sign a Reverse Transfer/Dual Admissions agreement. This partnership establishes an articulation agreement between the two insti-tutions and formalizes the process for DSCC students transferring to TSU.

November 2014- page 3DSCC Celebrates Grand Opening of New Learning Resource Center, Student Center and Tipton County Public LibraryDyersburg State Community College (DSCC) held a grand opening celebration for its new Learning Resource Center, Student Center and Tipton County Public Library at the DSCC Jimmy Naifeh Center at Tipton County on Tuesday, September 30. Over 300 persons were in attendance for this much-anticipated event, with standing room only during the formal ceremony inside the DSCC Baptist Memorial Health Care Academic Building Auditorium.“This building, the largest at the College, houses a unique partnership in TN – a col-lege Student Center, Learning Resource Center and the Tipton County Public Library – under one roof, united to serve the growing student body at the DSCC Jimmy Naifeh Center and a large public library clientele,” stated Dr. Karen Bowyer, President of DSCC. “In the library the DSCC students primarily use the 69,000 electronic books and 43 databases that are available to them 24/7. The Tipton County Public Library has filled many shelves with their 60-70,000 books and other items like CDs/DVDs. The two collections complement each other. On the Student Center side of the build-ing there are spaces for recreation and exercise using the various gaming consoles and tables for Ping Pong, Pool and Foosball. DSCC is very grateful to the State of Ten-nessee, Speaker Emeritus Jimmy Naifeh, Representative Debra Moody, Senator Mark Norris, Tipton County Executive Jeff Huffman, the Tipton County Legislative Commis-sion and the many generous donors for supporting this exciting project.”

A record-breaking crowd was in attendance for DSCC’s Grand Opening Ceremony for its new Learning Resource Center, Student Center and Tipton County Public Library on Sept. 30.

Kicking off the celebration in grand style was the Brighton High School Marching Band, under the direction of band director Jonathan Findley, which played on the front courtyard of the new building. The celebration continued as everyone moved into the auditorium for a formal ceremony which included remarks from several local and state political leaders.The Tennessee Army National Guard Color Guard opened the ceremony with a presentation of the colors. Guests then enjoyed a special performance by DSCC’s Jazz Choir ‘Syncopation’. A welcome by DSCC’s Student Government Association President Lara Beth Cherry was followed by remarks from Shannon Leach, a well-known user of the Tipton County Public Library.Reverend Wade Cox, Senior Pastor of First United Methodist Church in Covington, gave the invocation. Dr. Karen Bowyer, Presi-dent of DSCC, made opening remarks followed by Jeff Huffman, County Executive of Tipton County, and Chancellor John Morgan of the Tennessee Board of Regents.Speaker Emeritus Jimmy Naifeh gave moving remarks and personally thanked everyone that helped make the dream of creat-ing this state-of-the-art learning facility a reality. “I personally consider this facility to be the most important accomplishment of my legislative career,” stated Naifeh. “I cannot take all the credit. It was a joint effort between Jeff Huffman, Duke Brasfield, Tim Sloan and most recently Chancellor Morgan - it took all of us to get this done.”Representative Debra Moody reiterated Speaker Naifeh’s sentiments on how this unified resource for Tipton County will provide the area with unlimited possibilities for not only children but adults as well.Dr. Mark Bowers, DSCC Tipton County Chair of Donor Recognition, personally recognized all donors that had given monetary gifts to support the new building. Donors and rooms named in the new facility include the Peter Fyfe Genealogy Room, the Bank of Tipton Nursing/Allied Health Study Room, the Joe Griggs, Jr. and David Griggs Computer Lab, Duke’s Café in Memory of Duke H. Brasfield, the Houston and Debbie Gordon Computer Classroom, the Houston and Debbie Gordon Work Room, the Unilever

Fee Study Lab, the Celebrate Munford Study Lab, the Ripley Power and Light Company Lobby, and Rose Companies Children’s Multi-Purpose Lab and Performance Area (Paul Rose) Paul Rose, Vice Chair of the DSCC Foundation Board of Directors and CEO of Rose Construction, gave the closing remarks. The celebration continued as guests proceeded to tour the new facility. Guests were treated to a reception while harpist Bill Butner provided beautiful music for everyone’s enjoyment.The new 54,000 square foot state-of-the-art building offers students and users of the public library access to over 500 comput-ers in open labs and the Computer Information Technology classrooms and labs. Other features include the Advanced Integrated Industrial Technology (AIIT) Lab, a Learning Emporium with 78 computer workstations, Interactive Television classrooms, the Peter Fyfe Genealogy Room, a children’s library with the Rose Companies Children’s Multi-Purpose Lab, Duke’s Cafe off of the lobby, an Outdoor Performance area and a Lab for Recreation, Health and Physical Fitness. As you enter the front door near the fountain you will find the Office of Jimmy Naifeh, Speaker Emeritus, Tennessee House of Representatives.
