1 Dr. Graves, pastors, delegates and friends of the assembly and District Advisory board (Pls stand) Thank you for many decisions… “If you have any questions you would like to ask the DAB in the operations of the District they would happily field any questions whatsoever… I bring to you my 14th report as your District Superintendent. It continues to be a joy for Carol and me to have the privilege to serve Christ in Colorado and to serve with you with a great team of supportive people! I trusted Jesus as my Savior in my youth and the peace that brought was unexplainable knowing I was in right standing with God. That is still active today. When I later experienced the peace of surrender and relinquishment to God’s complete control, the freedom of in II Cor 3:17 “where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty” became a reality… God is still writing His divine history… and is doing so across the pathway of our life… Carol & I have invested our lives in Colorado. We feel a very special bond to the ministry the mission and the future of this district. I love to be in our churches you make us feel at home. This last yr the DAB allowed us to take a Savvatical, combined vacation with Sabbatical time… and my goal was New World church, Old World church, & Oldest world church… We visited 9 mega churches in the U.S.A... Andy Stanley, NorthePointe, and Redeemer Pres, Dr. Timothy Keller & Brookly Tab, to name a few. Among many other impressions I came away with this thought; Great churches are impressive, like the great waterfalls & rivers of the world, the Nile, the Yangtze, the Amazon ,the Mississippi, are massive and impressive… but it’s the tiny little tributaries and Fultons and Johnson ditches that feed the world. Vacationers & honeymooners visit the great falls & rivers but when they return home it’s those tiny rivers that feeds and nurtures them. Amazed and impressed with the mega church I concluded that it’s the 300,000 Christian churches that average 75 or less, feed and nurture and shepherd the people throughout the land… That’s YOU!!! My THEME IS ‘VIBRANT” CHURCH We have some vibrant churches. Some of you are on the verge of break thru to new levels…with significant and strategic improvements this yr to potentially to launch them into greater effectiveness…
Just to name a few; Greeley Celebration Pointe new location & building: Pastor Kevin Miller. The church board and the church congregation saw that deferred maintenance was ½ a million and voted to sell their building and move into a new business building that will give positive cash flow… New Raymer… 30 mi north Ft. Morgan Pastor Earl & Ardyce Templeman Hope Springs… New building in incredible new location in Loveland… Pastor Robin Rodgers Loveland 1st New Land beginning construction… Pastor Brian Smith Pueblo 1st was joined by Pueblo Belmont this last year Pastor Jim Murray & Pastor Bob Simms Florence; Completely remodel of sanctuary & Foyer, Pastor Doyle Larken C. Spgs Grace joined by C.Spgs Remnant with Pastor Joe Warrington Thorncreek: Pastor Ruben has some miraculous stories of God’s hand in the purchase of land and the soon construction to follow.. VIBRANT!!! Vibrant church, vibrant laity, vibrant pastors…
QUESTION: Does it feel like to you that “doing church” is getting harder these days? Does it feel that way to you??? Less inclination of society to look to church for solutions… Culture is less friendly to church…. Leadership is not viewed with favor Lifestyle behavior is less and less aligned with ch In the ‘50’s and early 60’s everything was favorable for the church… Traditional values supported the church… “blue laws” protected the Sabbath… TV in 50’s & 60’s supported Christian values, “Leave it to Beaver” “Bonanza”: going to church “Superman” (truth, Justice & the American way) “Andy Griffith” Season 5 Episode 25 Barne is going thru old case files, humming a Hymn; “Anjj what is that song? Andy says; “Lose all their guilty stains” (there is a fountain filled with blood) Barne finds an unclosed case file where Floyd the barber punched Charlie Foley the grocer in the nose because he fell asleep in the chair and Floyd gave him a shave when he didn’t ask for it and then charged him 2 bits… In the end Andy asks the to offer forgiveness… Floyd says; “That’s what Sheriff Poindexter said to us 19 yrs ago” We can’t go back to Mayberry… How can the church be vibrant today???? It was a world favorable toward our values and conviction as a church. The church felt accepted by the world of it’s day…

Todays ch is becoming more and more like THE CHURCH IN EXILE… When Israel was taken to Babylon everything was at odds with the O.T. Church DIET & DRESS: Daniel said; “Lets us eat the Lords Diet” Governmental favor; tax exemption threatened Lifestyles; Sexual behavior; Israel had purity laws… Sabbath observance… Babylon had none of this… O.T. Church was discouraged; “We hung up our harps by the rivers of Babylon and our captors mocked us and said: “Sing to us those songs of Zion, of HOPE & POWER” (PS 137) They cried; “How can we sing our songs of hope in a foreign land…” The CHURCH is Increasingly experiencing what The Jews felt like to be in EXILE Colorado is finding itself increasingly like the Jewish people in Exile… I spoke with a pastor (Pastor Dave DeBord) who had a friend recently move from the bible belt of the southern states and they said This place is different, you don’t see respect for the clergy, and the Sabbath & church attendance and affinity toward church and religious things These were their exact words; “moving to Colorado is like moving to a foreign land…” It’s not a Pill or a Silver bullet! The church would love a superhero to fly into Gotham city and right every wrong, and right every injustice…. A 2016 presidential election will not fix everything….

We’ll have to have VIBRANT CHURCHES that are REVITALIZED MORE THAN EVER to be an effective church in EXILE The answer for today is the PROPHETS OF YESTERDAY…
Walter Brugeman in an older book; “Hopeful Imagination” prophetic voices in Exile, recommended by Pastor Chuck Hayes Prophets used expressions of Hope Nehemiah found ways to be a Church of Hope in Exile… Jews from Jerusalem came to Babylon and told him about the terrible condition of the walls & Gates broken down & destroyed.” I wept and mourned for days, (1:4) After surveying the walls at night he said to the people; “Come, let us re-‐build the walls of Jerusalem.” 2:12 They said, “Yes, Let us rise up and re-‐build.” 2:18 They strengthened their hands to do the work… Saballet & Tobiah resisted and jeered & mocked them.” Nehemiah did rebuild the walls, inspite of the opposition and he found the Joy of the Lord to be his strength (8:10) The words of Nehemiah resonate with me;
“Let us rise up & rebuild!!!” Bruggeman says That the prophets spoke in bold, powerful and buoyant language the message of God and the hope of God… This brings me to my 2020 Vision

My 20/20 vision for Colorado is that by the year 2020 we focus on 2 things… Is that by the year 2020
I believe by 2020 we could have; 1. 20 REVITALIZED CHURCHES, VIBRANT & Healthy
2. 20 NewStart churches…. I have leaned toward NewStarts more than ch revitalization during my time as a DS. Recent Study… VIBRANT CHURCH CHANGE IN Christian CHURCHES in USA: Closed from 2005 to 2020; 55,000 New Starts; 60,000 Net Gain; 4,500 Churches needed to keep up with population Growth? Net growth of 48,000… We simply cannot (or at least ARE NOT) plant our way out of the decline in America… We must have existing churches become Healthy & Vibrant again…
Church renewal specialist, Matthew Bohling of the Presbyterian Church of America, recently commented:
“We can not simply ignore struggling churches. We must give attention to these churches before they die or we all lose!” 1) REVITALIZATION OF AMERICA’S CHURCHES
With proper attention care, plateaued and declining churches can become healthy and improve the state of the American church. Oftentimes pastors find they need outside leadership coaching or a strategy consultant to come on-site to guide the church in the shifts needed in order to achieve vision clarity, a strategic plan, and a leadership pipeline.

Healthy churches are by far the best incubators of church plants. Vibrant, healthy churches produce healthy, vibrant offspring. This will begin the reversal of the declining and plateauing patterns we see within the Church today.
NEW STARTS & ESTABLISHED CHURCHES need to work together to change the state of the American Church. So the Like the 2 wings of a bird… If one wing of the bird is broken the bird will flop in one direction… if the other wing of the bird is broken it will flop the opposite direction…

Gen Supt Dr. David Busic said the same thing fairly succinctly at M15 this last
February… “The only answer for a post-‐Christian world is the strategy of a pre-‐christian church…” Gen. Supt. David Busic. It is the words Jesus said to the disciples “You tarry until YOU are empowered by the Holy Ghost… “ To minister in this post-‐exilic culture and what is beginning more and more to look like a Pre-‐christian age is the strategy of the pre-‐christian church… I’ve been so impressed with “A.D. The Bible Continues” by Roma Downy… The book of Acts beautifully portrays the New Christian church experiencing the traits of Exile.

We presented it in the pre-‐conference and it will be specific on leadership and training and case studies and visiting re-‐vitalized churches… Churches are struggling & in decline or plateau they are saying; “I’m doing everything I know how… I’m faithful, we’re not lazy, we’re busy, we do the tasks that we are called to do… How can I do more and accomplish what needs to be done????
Most churches wake up to discover that they're like Gulliver, they are tied down with thousands of strings that are inherited motion... Severing any 1 single string will not set them free... WITH STRATEGIC ATTENTION, PLATEAUED AND DECLINING churches can become healty… Leadership coahing Strategy consulting Key lay leaders involved Churches can modestly and incrementally in bitesizes achieve: Vision clarity A stretgic plan A leadership pipeline for equipping and deploying the saints.
When we first went to Westminster we were a church of 280… we grew to 340ish but got stuck… Dr. Bill Sullivan began the program called; “K Church” churches of 1000… at
the time there were only 12 Nazarene churches that had a membership of 1000+ I was invited to be a part of that K Church project…. I found my mind being open to new and creative ways of church growth… Church sized strategies opened up, we staff for the next level, we moved into multiple services… and then worked on High days and growth days… etc. Administratively we were taught how the glass ceiling is often in administrative shortfall and how to fill those gaps. My laymen began to see a a difference in me and my leadership as well. Peer to peer sharing and learning was priceless…. Pastor Gene Grate reminded me that of all the churches that went into K Church project that the trajectory of their growth and health was at a 45% incline… and after they got out of the training that the flat-‐lined again, at the higher level nevertheless flat-‐lined…
