Pixar has advised that the new RenderMan is being released at the same time as SIGGRAPH 2014 (August) and will be compatible with 64bit operating systems – Mac OS 10.8 and 10.7, Windows 8, 7 and Vista, and Linux. While RenderMan can use plug in tools such as Maya, Houdini, Katana or Cinema4D, it can also be utilized if you have custom tools for generating renderable 3D assets (RIB). Daz Studio supports this format (check under your 3Delight render settings for the checkbox that says “Render to RIB”).If you are interested in obtaining the free, non-commercial version of RenderMan, Pixar If you are interested in obtaining the free, non-commercial version of RenderMan, Pixar suggests you first register at http://renderman.pixar.com/view/registration You will then be notified once Render Man is available.

Yes, you read that correctly. The biggest news in the land of 3D art at the moment has been claimed by Pixar Animation Studios. On May 29th, Pixar announced that they will be offering a non-commercial version of RenderMan for free. This is great news, because along with an number of technical innovations and improvements that have been made to the latest version of their industry leading rendering software, non-commercial licenses (without any functional limitations), watermarks and time restrictions will also be available in conjunction with the time restrictions will also be available in conjunction with the upcoming release. The non-commercial version of the RenderMan interface will be available for students, institutions, researchers, developers and for general personal use. For those interested in the commercial usage of RenderMan, Pixar is offering the current version for $495 per license. The upcoming release will also combine the functionality of the RenderMan Pro Server upcoming release will also combine the functionality of the RenderMan Pro Server and RenderMan Studio through a flexible license.

Pixar to Release Render Man for Free!

Hello everyone and welcome to The News Desk! The idea behind this part of the magazine is to let you know about the inner workings of the 3D world as they pertain to us, the Daz Studio users. This means that you won’t find material about Poser, Maya, 3DS Max or other 3D software, unless it can also be used by Daz Studio. A perfect example of this is the announcement recently publicized by Pixar that the RenderMan application will soon be available for free. The other section of the News Desk is The Pipeline, where we will bring you information and sneak peeks into what the The other section of the News Desk is The Pipeline, where we will bring you information and sneak peeks into what the content creators are working on. This month, we have YURdigital and Mortem Vetus giving us a look into what new releases we can expect from both talented artists. So, without further ado, welcome to the first News Desk and In The Pipeline.Cheers,Matt

So in the run up to creating our first issue we held a competition to see if someone could design a logo for the magazine and we are proud to say here it is

This striking design was the brainchild of Max Smeagol. What we really liked was that Max supplied us the logo with two options Light and Dark,so well done Max, your prize will be on it's way to you shortly

OTOY releases OctaneRender 2.On June 9th, OTOY Inc. announced the availability of the latest version of their real-time rendering software, which includes more than a dozen new features. These are just some of the new features: • Displacement mapping – Used to give objects depth and detail, displacement mapping allows the height of points on a surface to be adjusted based on an image value. • Object motion blur – The blurring effect that simulates motion of inanimate objects in a rendered scene is sup-• Object motion blur – The blurring effect that simulates motion of inanimate objects in a rendered scene is sup-ported and can be applied independently of camera movement. • Hair and fur – An optimized hair render primitive is now available to allow rendering of hair or fur while reducing memory usage by 20 times when compared to previous processes. OctaneRender™ 2 also simulates the distribution and fluidity of movement of those primitives. • Rounded edges – Artists have the ability to easily and efficiently round the sharp edges of geometric objects • Rounded edges – Artists have the ability to easily and efficiently round the sharp edges of geometric objects without modifying and reloading the geometry. The process is done during rendering by special shader algorithms that recalculate normals near the sharp edges and corners to make them appear smooth, allowing for the tuning of edge sharpness in real-time throughout rendering. • Improved sky rendering – Using HDRI + Sun, OctaneRender™ 2 enables the use of textures as sky backgrounds and ensures that objects in the scene accurately reflect the loaded sky texture. • Region rendering – To save time on test renders, this feature allows users to specify a region in the scene and • Region rendering – To save time on test renders, this feature allows users to specify a region in the scene and partially preview rendered results in real-time. • Network rendering – The rendering process can be made faster than ever by leveraging remote GPUs on render slaves connected via the network.

The plan is to produce both Poser and Daz Studio native versions of each, with the expected release of Daz Studio .I.C.K expected release of Daz Studio .I.C.K being late June to early July. The expan-sion packs should be rolling out in the 3rd and 4th quarter of 2014 and into early 2015.

Clint from YURdigital http://www.yurdigital.com/ has informed us that the conversion of the very popular P.I.C.K Sci Fi edition (Poser Indoor Creation Kit) to a native Daz Studio version is in the final stages and everything is progressing well. P.I.C.K has been an extremely popular Poser based product for some time and the demand for a native Daz Studio version has prompted the team to perform the conversion. “Most of the materials used in the Poser version are done with proce-dural materials that don’t work within Daz Studio. We are creating all new procedural materials within Daz as well as adding some materials based on high resolution photos for the floors”. Clint explained in detail. How does it make you feel when you see peoples artwork made with your products? That has to be the best feeling ever. I can't render and don't have an eye for that end of the art. Everytime I see a render with my stuff I'm in awe of it it's like they bring whats in my head to life . My art is the model and design but I lack the skill to render it in a artistic way.

You currently have a shop at Daz, anywhere else we can find your products?Right now I only have a store at Daz but by the end of the summer you can find me at Runtime DNA and Renderosity

Can you give us a hint of what is to come? Can you give us a hint of what is to come? More movement, more detail, more set's at all the big shops :)

In your store there are huge amounts of clothing items have you ever been tempted to model architecture or vehicles or are clothes your passion?I have made everything From skin, texture clothing textures, cars, bikes, shoes, hair, architecture But I like to make shoes and clothing best. I even started the merchant resource kits back in erly 2000's at Renderosity yeah thats my fault lol.

Typically how long does it take from initial idea to finished model?Typically how long does it take from initial idea to finished model? That can be fom one day to 4 months it's all in what I have designed.

What one piece of advice would you give to someone starting out creating for Daz Studio?Bother Daz to get you info on how things work there is little good info on how to make things for DS unlike Poser ,but they are pretty good at helping if asked.

Which 3 are your personal favorites of your own products? (please Which 3 are your personal favorites of your own products? (please include product images)I cant say at this time becuse they are not in the store at Daz or Run-timeDNA yet lol.

Which are your 3 personal favorite Vendors?O this is a hard one I have a few more then 3.For clothing Littlefox and ElorOnceDarkFor Hair, Swam and goldtasselFor Hair, Swam and goldtasselPoses, ironman13

If you could add one new feature to daz studio, what would it be?Overlapping weight maps lol Thats a Rigging thing. In poser we have have countless ghost bones or body handels in DS we can't becuse DS can't hold the overlapping nmaps.

Where do you fit in to this society? Are you one of the wage slaves, the “drones”, doing your job and not thinking about the world outside the corporate archology you live in? Or are you one of the disenfranchised, the broken, forced to live outside the the broken, forced to live outside the supposed utopia created by the companies that now run the world? Or have you fought back, learning new tricks and trades in the shadows of those mega corps, using what you’ve learned to strike at the rotten heart of this technological world?this technological world?

Cyberpunk, what is it? We hear the term used a lot these days in movies, games, books and online. The Oxford Dictionary defines Cyberpunk as: A genre of science fiction set in a lawless subculture of an oppressive society dominated by computer technology.

And while this is accurate, it doesn’t really tell the whole story. Cyberpunk is a genre that And while this is accurate, it doesn’t really tell the whole story. Cyberpunk is a genre that covers not only technology, but the way in which that technology is used, economics, capi-talism, politics, every facet of human existence in a near future dystopian society. Cyber-punk has its own unique fashions and while it may have had its glory days back in the 1980’s the genres heart continues to beat strongly today – even if it is technologically assisted.

In essence, Cyberpunk is all about imagination, with a sprinkle of pessimism and fear about repercussions of technology and the mega corporations who use it to keep control.

Next, we use Autofit to fit the clothes into a plain basic Genesis. The Privateer loads untex-tured, as you can see here

Now, we load the materials to the cloth items the way we always have, then make some test renders (lower specularity mostly, then I used some better metal shaders on the metal). Now it appears appropriate.

This is a short and quick tutorial on how to convert your generation 3 clothes to work with Genesis 2 figures, with all implications that auto-fit will have, such as dresses, pants, and tops that may not possibly work. One thing that works effectively from generation 3 is the footwear, as the generation 3 feet are much more like the Genesis 2 figure feet than the Gen-eration 4 feet.

So, are you still with me? Shall we begin? Initially, you will need the Gen 3 Iconic Shapes for Genesis Bundle, which include the individ-Initially, you will need the Gen 3 Iconic Shapes for Genesis Bundle, which include the individ-ual shapes for the figure you want to bring clothes from. This packet contains the vital Auto-fit information that DAZ requires. Gen 3 Iconic Shapes for Genesis can be located in the DAZ store: http://www.daz3d.com/gen-3-iconic-shapes-for-genesis

We all have our favorite items; those items that speak to us in distinctive ways. They can vary from the jacket our beloved hero always wears, to something else that holds more sentimental value to the hero. These items usually are the ones we miss most when we transition from one figure generation to another and in my case, my favorite set of items is the Privateer for M3, my perfect space cowboy clothing set. If you don’t have it, it usually turns up at a discount or on sale, and there are some really good textures for it. Some of the textures need tweaking to work for DAZ as older materials usually will require, but material tweaking will hopefully be another tutorial for a materials usually will require, but material tweaking will hopefully be another tutorial for a future issue.

When Daz renders a scene, by default it starts in the top left corner and renders across the row before returning to the left hand edge and starting the next row, this is called a horizontal Bucket Order but Daz allows us the option to change the bucket order.

There are five available options:• Horizontal• Vertical• Zigzag• Zigzag• Spiral• Circle

So why change the bucket order, usually the main focus of your image is towards the centre, so if you change your bucket order to say “spiral” the render will start from the centre and then render outwards allowing you to see the focus of your render earlier.

DS QUICK TIP

As I said before, this can be done with the same restrictions or problems Autofit can have. If you have something valuable you would really like to preserve, I would recommend Sickle Yield’s rigging and morphing system. It can be found at http://www.daz3d.com/sickle-rigging-and-morphing-system.

To conclude, clear the scene and load your Genesis 2 character. I decided to use my model Dan; he would look good as a To conclude, clear the scene and load your Genesis 2 character. I decided to use my model Dan; he would look good as a Privateer. I then just load the clothes and autofit them, with the Genesis 2 figure as the source. I think it came out pretty nice, what do you think?

Promptly select a clothing item (In my case the pants called pvtPants), and go to Save As -> Support Assert -> Figure/Prop Asset

.Save the item as a .duf file, which is what this does. Repeat this step for every item, for I will admit that while making this tutorial I neglected to export the shirt and ended up exporting the jacket twice.

Continuing on, it’s time to do the real trick; so far it has been nothing more than using Autofit. We go on by creating a new folder in our DAZ Studio Library folder under People->Genesis->Clothing. I have labeled mine as“My Converted” and inside that folder I will create another folder called “Privateer”.

In Daz you can never have enough shaders and this metal set from Chris Locke is my absolute number one when it comes to metals. It comes with two options Reflection mapped or raytraced The results from the raytraced are outstanding, especially the silver which I use a lot. I have used this many times with the classic fantasy outfit by AeonSoul

This is my absolute ultimate fantsy outfit, it's wonderful swirling metal-work gives it a charming style that you only get from Aeonsoul, and it's mixture of Metalwork, gemstones and leather with the wide range of colour choices really do make this a must have.

The normal map contains much more information than just the “bump” part. It also contains information on lighting, which I won’t go into in this article. Normal maps do not add extra geometry, which makes them faster to render, and they will use less memory, but it comes with a cost in quality. Without the extra geometry shadows will be calculated using the extra information and not from actual rays. This means that a normal map that would say that light comes from the right when the light in the scene comes light comes from the right when the light in the scene comes from the left, will render inconsistent shadowing results. This is not very obvious at all times but it can be visible.

Another thing you can do is to bake shadows into the texture map, either using in a program used to make textures, in my case FilterForge or using AoA’s Advanced Ambient light. That way you can get a deeper look in the textures.

As you see, this works quite well with ordinary bump maps, and with displacement it looks even better. Displacement map settings can be very valuable in DAZ Studio, as you can set the negative and positive displacements individually. For displace-ment, pure grey is zero, and darker colors go inwards as light go outwards. If your map is not calibrated then you can tweak the settings to make it look as you like.

For materials that are visible and almost straight forward of the camera, you can ignore the bump map and still get reasonable good results. With a Normal map it also looks good. Another issue with normal maps is that you cannot tweak the result. The map must be generated with the exact height you want, which can be frustrating. There is nothing as irritating when “material height” poke through something at rendering time.

So, what are the problems with normal maps excluding that they won’t cast correct shadows at rendering time? The problem with any kind of bump map is to make them when the material source is a photo. There are several different ways to do this, but just turning the image into a greyscale image, or as I’ve seen several times, driving the diffuse image even as a bump map is plain ugly.

Displacement maps should generally have more detail than bump maps. Bump maps can be in low resolution, and slightly Displacement maps should generally have more detail than bump maps. Bump maps can be in low resolution, and slightly blurred, while displacement maps generally should be sharp and with lots of small details. Normal maps are much like dis-placement maps in that area, they should contain enough information to make the surface look real.

I hope you got a good start in the issues with bump, displacement, and normal maps, and I will continue in another issue with tools to make those maps and important things to consider.

From the third year my art career took flight as I was hired to do ten non-nude pin-ups for a design company in India. After that accomplishment, I began receiving requests for commissioned works and was hired by one of the leading tube companies during that period of time.

This took my breath away which led me to a long "vacation" from display-ing my art. I still painted privately but it wasn't until November 2013 that I returned to Daz. If you have ever looked under the advanced render settings in Daz you may have noticed a check box that says “Render to RIB”. So...what’s the RIB text file and why would we want to render to it?RIB stands for RIB stands for "Renderman Interface Bytestream" and it is a simple text file that contains all the elements that a renderman compliant renderer needs to create your scene.
