Todd Parnell, former Springfield banker, Drury alumnus and adjunct professor, is the 16th president of Drury University. Parnell graduated from Drury University in
1969. He then went on to earn his Master’s in Business Administration from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College in 1971. While a student at Drury, Parnell was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha and Omicron Delta Kappa and spent a semester studying abroad in London. He served as president of Truman Bank in Clayton, Mo., was founding CEO of Springfield-based THE BANK, where he led a merger with The Signature Bank. He would later serve as chief operating officer and president of The Signature Bank.
Parnell is heavily involved in the Springfield community having chaired the boards of the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce and the Community Foundation of the Ozarks. He also serves on the board of the Missouri Clean Water Commission and is a trustee of the State Historical Society of Missouri. He also takes the time to teach a course at Drury in entrepreneurship. Parnell is the author of three books, his most recent being The Buffalo, Ben and Me, which chronicles his trip down Arkansas’ Buffalo River with his son in 1995.
TODD PARNELL DRURY PRESIDENT
Matt Miller, named Drury's Director of Athletics Administration in June of 2012, has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business
Administration (2001) and also holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration (MBA, 2003) both from Drury University. While at Drury, Miller established himself as one of the all-time greats in the illustrious history of the Panthers' basketball program, currently No. 3 on the career scoring charts with 2,024 points and No. 1 all-time in three-pointers made with 351, earning Academic All-America honors three times and All-America honors twice. His No. 22 jersey is one of only five retired in the 100-plus years of basketball history at Drury University. He established himself as one of the all-time highest achievers in the sport of basketball. Miller served Drury through its national accreditation review in 2001, serving as one of only two students on the committee. He was the first student-athlete to be named “Joe College” as a senior, an award given each year to the most outstanding male student at Drury. After graduating, Miller began a successful career in real estate. Combining his business sense with a unique ability to think critically and non-traditionally, he was active in the vision behind the revitalization and development of historic downtown Springfield. He continued to pursue vari-ous entrepreneurial endeavors both during and after his commercial real estate career, including ownership in a restaurant/lounge, an online real estate marketing business, and a seasonal retail business with national dis-tribution and international manufacturing operations. In 2008, Miller returned to work at his alma mater, accepting the chal-lenge of creating a campus-wide wellness program for Drury employees and students. In just over two short years in this role, Matt implemented a robust activity based exercise program, as well as a series of healthy cooking classes and educational wellness opportunities for employees. He conduct-ed oversight on expansion of the student intramural sports programs, and launched a nationally recognized student bicycle rental program; a program that was later featured in a USA Today news article. Miller also developed an innovative partnership with a local massage therapy school, and beginning this past spring, all Drury students and employees will have access to free massage services as part of this initia-tive. He also formulated a partnership that is now accepted between Drury University and Cleveland Clinic, which will make available a degree certifi-cate in practical wellness to Drury students featuring content and concepts developed by Cleveland Clinic.

Pat Atwell is entering his sixth year as the Director of Athletics at Drury University, overseeing a 17-sport program that
continues to rank among the best nationally in NCAA Division II. Atwell is at the helm of a DU program that has finished in the Top 35 of the Learfield Director's Cup national all-sports standings in each of the past 12 seasons, including a No. 11 finish in 2010-11, when Drury again brought home dual national championships in men's and women's swim-ming and diving, a Great Lakes Valley Conference title in women's tennis and NCAA-II national tourney appearances in 9 of its 17 sports - men's cross country, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's swim-ming and diving, men's and women's tennis and men's and women's golf. A year earlier (2009-10), Drury made the NCAA-II post-season field in 10 of those 17 spots, finishing 14th in the Director's Cup competition among more than 300 schools in the nation. It was also a year in which DU captured its first-ever Great Lakes Valley Conference All-Sports Trophy in '09-'10, an effort sparked by GLVC championships won in men's soccer, women's basketball and men's and women's tennis, as well as the dual swimming titles for the second of what has become an unprecedented three-year sweep of water wins for the Panthers. Under Atwell's guidance, Drury also has maintained its long-standing tradition of academic excellence. In 2010-11, Drury student-athletes com-piled a 3.33 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the year and have maintained a 3.36 cumulative GPA for their academic careers. In 2010-11, Drury led the Great Lakes Valley Conference with 30 honorees in the GLVC Council of Presidents Academic Awards, ranked third in the 15-team league with 139 athletes receive the GLVC All-Academic Awards (up from 121 in 2009-10) and had eight teams - second-most in the league - qualify for the GLVC Team Academic Awards by maintaining a 3.30 GPA or better for the year (DU women's basketball, women's ten-nis, women's cross country, volleyball, women's golf and women's soccer along with baseball and men's tennis). The 2010-11 DU women's basketball team finished with the nation's third-highest team GPA (3.59) in NCAA-II, while individually, senior cross country and track standout Jaime Villa Zapatero earned the prestigious Paragon Award from the GLVC for his combination of academic and ath-letic success, while senior Ja'Nell Jones (women's basketball) and junior Katrina Choate (women's golf) were named GLVC Scholar Athletes of the Year for their respective sports.

O'REILLY FAMILY EVENT CENTER
The O’Reilly Family Event Center opened on the Drury University campus on October 1, 2010, as the new home of the Drury men’s and women’s basketball teams and the volleyball squad. The arena has a capacity of 3,100 for athletic events and was built at a price tag of $13.5 million. It was funded entirely through private donations,
with the generous lead naming rights gift of $6 million provided by the O’Reilly family of Springfield. Other large donations with naming rights came from the William Pitt family (court) and Thomas R. Stout (student section). In addition to serving as one of the best facilities in the nation for athletics and as the potential future home of both Great Lakes Valley Conference and NCAA championship events, the arena provides Drury University with a crown jewel in the center of its campus and a home for a variety of events involving the student body population,
from concerts to gradua-tions to meeting and dining space in the plush new ban-quet area. Kelly Clarkson, Daughtry, Dierks Bentley, Sheryl Crow and the Pointer Sisters are among the many acts to have appeared at the "O" in its short history. A large concourse area outside provides students a gathering place before and after events.

Lady Panthers basketball is one of the great start-up success stories in NCAA-II history. Since the program began in 2000-01, the Lady Panthers have never had
a losing season and have won 20 or more games in ten of their 12 seasons, including a school-record 36-2 effort in 2003-04 that landed the program in the national champi-onship game in its fourth season of existence. After dominating the Heartland Conference in the pro-gram’s first five seasons, Drury has continued that success in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, including an amazing 19-0 record in league play in 2005-06, its first season as a member. The Lady Panthers have claimed GLVC Championships in 2007-08 and 2009-10 and are currently riding a string of ten consecutive NCAA D-II Tournament trips, including a pair of Elite Eight appearances (2004, 2007), in fashioning a 300-75 record since the program’s beginning. That included a 133-17 record in 10 years of playing in the historic Weiser Gym before moving in 2010-11 to the 3,100-seat O’Reilly Family Event Center. Since their inception, the Lady Panthers have also prided themselves not only on regularly ranking in the nation’s Top 10 in attendance, but also being among the leaders in grade-point average, topping that category three times (2005, 2006 and 2012), leading the nation's bas-ketball teams at all levels in the latter. That’s the level of expectation for a Lady Panther: excellence in the commu-nity, on the court and in the classroom.

Steve Harold has continued to build upon Drury's rich tradition of basketball success in his five seasons with the Lady Panthers.
His Drury squads have compiled a 115-39 record (.747 winning percentage) since he arrived in Springfield in 2007 after a long and prosperous career at Glenville (W. Va.) State. But more notable than the record is the fact that Harold has helped the Lady Panthers extend their phenomenal streak of NCAA D-II Tournament appear-ances to 10 consecutive years after last season's 20-8 finish, which included a trip to the NCAA D-II Midwest Regional in Ashland, Ohio and a fifth GLVC West title in the program's seven years as a league member. Harold's Lady Panthers have also captured a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference championships (2008, 2010) in his time at Drury, as he's also guided the Lady Panthers to at least a share of the GLVC West title in four of his five seasons. And, as you would expect with a program with such gaudy overall win-loss numbers, the Lady Panthers continue to be strong at home under Harold. After going 42-4 in his first three seasons at the venerable Weiser Gym - as the Lady Panthers finished a 10-year run in the building with an overall 132-17 mark - the Lady Panthers went 11-1 this past season in the plush, $13.5 million O'Reilly Family Event Center to improve to 21-5 in the two seasons since the 3,100-seat arena, one of the finest in the nation, opened its doors in 2010-11. Another sparkling season in 2011-12 - a final 20-8 mark - pushed Harold's overall coaching record to 377-146 in 17 seasons at the NCAA Division II level, his .721 winning percentage ranking among the best in the nation among active D-II coaches. All Harold did in his rookie season of 2007-08 at Drury with one of the nation's top NCAA Division II programs was maintain that lofty status, guiding Drury to a 28-4 overall mark, a third straight Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division title and a first GLVC championship, courtesy of the Lady Panthers' sweep to the GLVC Tournament title at Weiser Gym. The latter included a title game victory over Northern Kentucky - Drury's second over the Norse dur-ing the season - who later turned the tables on the Lady Panthers by knocking off DU at Weiser in the NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional semifinals on their way to an NCAA championship. After a 19-10 overall effort in 2008-09, Harold's Lady Panthers were right back in the GLVC title pic-ture, emerging as champions after sweeping through the post-season tourney field in Springfield, Ill., in 2009-10 in what became a 28-7 overall campaign. Not that the continued excellence should have come as any surprise, given that when Drury hired Harold
away from Glenville State, it was getting the reigning D-II National Coach of the Year. Harold had a 262-107 record in 12 seasons at Glenville State College in Glenville, West Virginia. That includes a 33-3 mark - the best mark in school history - and an NCAA-II Elite Eight appearance this past sea-son, when the Lady Pioneers fell to UC-San Diego in the quarterfinals to complete their sixth straight NCAA Tournament trip. Harold's Lady Pioneers were a combined 63-6 in his last two seasons there and posted 20 wins or more in each of his last eight seasons on the GSC bench, winning West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007 to go with three WVIAC tournament titles. In addition to NCAA-II East Region titles won in 2002 and 2007, Harold's Glenville State squad was a regional runner-up in 2003, 2004 and 2006. His '01-02 squad finished 29-4 and reached the D-II national semifinals for the first time in school his-tory. The Lady Pioneers also finished no worse than No. 14 in the final USA Today/ESPN WBCA NCAA II national poll in five of Harold's final six seasons at GSC, coming in at No. 6 in 2006-07. Harold's Lady Pioneer teams also finished annually among the WVIAC's best in overall grade point aver-age. He also served as athletic director at Glenville State, his alma mater. Among his many accomplishments, his Lady Pioneers put together a 64-game home winning streak from 1999-2004, third longest in D-II history. Harold also had 31 players named to all-conference teams and has coached four NCAA-II All-America selections. In addition to claiming the WBCA's national Coach of the Year honor in 2006-07, he was the East Region Coach of the Year twice and the WVIAC Coach of the Year three times. The Glenville native received his Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education and Business Education in
1987 from Glenville State and his Masters of Science degree in Physical Education and Health from Radford University in 1990. He began his coaching career as an assistant to the men's basket-ball team at GSC before moving to the women's side as an assistant in 1993. He was promoted to head women's basketball coach in March of 1995. Harold also spent three years as the men's track and field coach at Glenville State, reviv-ing the program to win three league titles (1992, 1993 and 1995) and earning the conference coach of the year distinction each time. Harold and wife Renee have two daughters - Katie (19), a sopho-more guard for the Lady Panthers in 2012-13, and Allie (15), a soph-omore swimmer at Springfield's Glendale High School.

assistant coaches
John Nicolais is now entering his fifth season as an assistant coach with the Lady Panthers after being reunited with his former boss,
Steve Harold. It's a combination that has helped the Lady Panthers compile an 87-35 record over the past four seasons, including a 20-8 mark last winter that produced a Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division co-championship and a tenth straight NCAA-II Tournament appearance. (This was one year removed from another GLVC West Division co-championship and a NCAA tournament appearance in the Midwest region semi-finals.) That came on the heels of a highly successful 2009-10 season that included a 28-7 record, the school's second Great Lakes Valley Conference championship, and a berth in the Midwest Regional finals. Nicolais, responsible for working with the DU perimeter players, with specific attention to player development, has yielded prolific results. He has worked directly with All-Americans Lindsay Ballweg (2010), and Bethanie Funderburk (2011), and most recently with senior guard Katie Pritchard, NCAA Division II’s leader in three-point field goal shooting percentage (.492) for the 2011-12 sea-son. This marks the second time under Nicolais’ tutelage Pritchard was able to claim such an accomplishment. The 2009-10 season marked an
incredible feat for the Lady Panther perimeter play-ers, one in which Pritchard and Ballweg finished number 1 and 2 the nation in three-point field goal percentage respectively (Pritchard 93-184 .505 and Ballweg 112-224 .500). Nicolais, who assists with on-the-floor coach-ing and academic progress, helped monitor the Lady Panthers as they led the nation in grade point average (3.709) at all levels of women's college basketball for the 2011-12 year, after finishing third in D-II in 2010-11 with a 3.591 GPA. Nicolais, who also plays an integral role in recruiting for the Lady Panthers, spent five seasons as an assistant for Harold at Glenville (W. Va.) State. He was out of coaching during Harold's inaugural 2007-08 season at DU while he finished his Master's degree at Salem University in Salem, W. Va. During his time with Harold at Glenville State, Nicolais (pronounced "nik-olay") and the Lady Pioneers made five consecutive trips to the NCAA Division II national tournament and posted an over-all record 145-22 in that stretch—finishing what would be the final year in Glenville with a school record 33-3 season. He was credited by Harold for being very active in the recruiting process and for
his work with the GSC perimeter players, hav-ing worked directly with two All-Americans and GSC’s all-time leading scorer. Completing the 2011-12 season, Nicolais has worked with Harold over the course of nine seasons with an overall record of 232-57 (.802 winning percentage) and nine straight NCAA Tournament appearances. Prior to joining Coach Harold at Glenville State, Nicolais served three seasons as an assistant coach at Gilmer County High School in Glenville. He helped Gilmer to two West Virginia State High School basketball tournaments, with the 2001 team advancing to the state championship game. Nicolais also coached four years of volleyball at Gilmer (2000-03), and his 2003 team captured the school's first-ever West Virginia Class A State championship. Coach Nicolais earned West Virginia Coaches Association Region II Volleyball Coach of the Year honors that season. John and his wife, Carrie, reside in Springfield and were married September 24, 2011.
Molly (Carter) Miller, one of the most deco-rated players in the history of the Lady Panthers' basketball program and a Drury
Sports Hall of Fame inductee in November of 2012, has returned to the program as an assistant coach in 2012-13. Miller was a four-year standout for Drury from 2004-08, and still ranks as the program's No. 2 all-time scorer with 1,570 points, as well as No. 2 in both assists (439) and steals (407). She earned All-GLVC honors three times and Third Team All-America rec-ognition as a senior, but most notably, was also the winner of the GLVC's Paragon Award after her final year, the highest honor bestowed to a female student-athlete, from all sports, by the league. In her four seasons in a Lady Panthers' uniform (three with Nyla Milleson, one with Harold), Miller's teams amassed a record of 112-18, qualified for the NCAA-II Tournament four times (including the Elite Eight in Kearney, Neb., in 2007) and cap-tured the GLVC title in 2008. "I'm excited that we are able to give Molly the opportunity to bring her leadership and passion to our coaching staff," Harold said. "She's a proven
winner, she takes great pride in Drury University and the Lady Panthers and I believe she'll be a tremendous asset to our program, on and off the court." Miller, a former Springfield Kickapoo High School standout, has spent the past four years
as the marketing director at Springfield Neurological and Spine Institute. She has continued to give private basketball lessons to area youth since graduating from Drury in 2008, but sees the Lady Panthers' coaching job as a chance to fully engage herself with her lifelong passion for the game. "This is a dream come true for me, to be back on the court once again at Drury," Miller said. "I have never stopped loving the game
and I couldn't think of a more perfect fit for myself. I have to thank Coach Harold and the whole Drury family for giving me this amazing opportunity. I am anxious to start working with a talented group of young athletes to achieve our team goals." Molly wed former Missouri State football player Derek Miller in Drury's Stone Chapel on September 1, 2012.

Drury University's "Fanthers" student athletic sup-port group was honored by the NCAA in January 2012 as the Division II national winner of the "Game
Environment Award Of Excellence" for 2011. The "Fanthers" were formed in summer 2011 as a student athletics support group. More than 560 Drury stu-dents signed up at the start of the 2011-12 school year for the group by accepting black "Fanthers" t-shirts to wear to athletic events, and in conjunction, received discounts at a number of local area businesses when they would wear their Fanthers' shirts into those establishments. Also commended by the NCAA was the "Front Row Refs" initiative, an energetic group within the "Fanthers" consisting of students who sit in courtside seats in referee jerseys (such as the Lady Panthers above for a men's game) and various different outfits, joining the Drury cheerleaders, poms and pep band in helping to create a fun and entertain-ing student environment in Section 101 of the O'Reilly Family Event Center for home basketball and volleyball games, as well as at home events for DU soccer matches as well. "As Division II has activated its strategic position, over the last five years, we have recognized the importance of showcasing fan-friendly and entertaining environments for Division II athletics events," NCAA D-II Vice President Mike Racy said. "The national game-environment award has become a symbol of excellence at the Division II level in executing this important initiative. I compliment Drury for the job they have done in creating a positive game environment for their fans and their student-athletes."

LET NATION IN TEAM gPA AT ALL LEVELS OF NCAA BASKETBALL IN 2011-12
outlook
MARLA MUNSEN KATIE PRITCHARDABBY BRACKER
Drury University's Lady Panthers basketball team post-ed the nation's highest grade point average (3.709) at all levels in 2011-12, according to the Women's
Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Academic Team Honor Rolls. Coach Steve Harold's Lady Panthers edged King (Tenn.), which had a 3.692 team GPA, for top honors in NCAA Division II. Other leaders at their respective levels were Wisconsin-Green Bay (3.616) in NCAA Division I, Northland (3.706) in NCAA-III, Northwestern (3.657) in NAIA and Salt Lake (3.379) in the juco/community college division. "It's just a tribute to the work ethic and sense of purpose of these young ladies," said Harold, whose Lady Panthers finished 20-8 on the season, shared the GLVC West Division title and qualified for the NCAA-II tourney for a 10th straight year. They do a tremendous job of balanc-ing their classroom work and their time spent with our road trips, practice schedules, etc., and it certainly shows in hav-ing the nation's best GPA, something we are very proud of as part of the Lady Panthers' and Drury University student-athlete tradition." Drury was one of four Great Lakes Valley Conference schools in the D-II Top 20, joining Rockhurst (fifth at 3.586), Maryville (16th at 3.507) and Wisconsin-Parkside (17th at 3.498) as WBCA Academic Team Honor Roll recipi-ents. It marked the eighth time the Lady Panthers have fin-ished in the Top 25 academically. Drury also led the nation in D-II team GPA in 2003-04 and 2004-05.
TOP TEAM GPA IN NCAA
TEN CONSECUTIVE NCAA DIVISION II TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES22
2012-13 outlook
They feature one of the nation's top returning
backcourts in senior Katie Pritchard and
junior Bethanie Funderburk. They have the
blue-collar, highly-respected senior leader every
team desires in forward Abby Bracker. They have
a young, long and talented group of inside players
who will be given every opportunity to learn and
prosper on the job.
And they once again will tackle a challeng-
ing non-conference schedule, on top of their usual,
rigorous Great Lakes Valley Conference slate, that
should have them severely battle-tested come
March. Which, all tied together, prompts the big
question: Will this be the year the Lady Panthers put
it all together and make one of those NCAA Division
II tournament runs like the program became ac-
customed to, and has gone missing for the past few
seasons?
It's a fair question. After all, coach Steve Harold's Lady Panthers, have continued to do
the majority of trademarks for this tradition rich
program, which hit the 300-win mark last February
in just 12 seasons (an average of 25 victories per
season). They win GLVC division and league titles,
they crack the national Top 25 virtually every season
and they keep going back to the D-II version of the
Big Dance, extending that streak to an impressive
10 consecutive seasons with their trip to Ashland,
Ohio last March.
But that's where the speed bumps have started
to crop up, since they made their last Elite Eight
trip in Harold's first season with the Lady Panthers
(2007-08). One and done four years ago and last
season, when they ran into a ridiculously hot-
shooting Ferris State in the opening round, a 74-56
setback. The two years in between, seasons ended
on the home floor of Michigan Tech, a bona fide
national title contender each time themselves.
It's a resumé that most basketball programs
would kill to have. Last year's 20-8 overall mark, for
example, would spark a healthy dose of enthusiasm
in most fan camps. But that also tells you the level
of expectation for Drury women's basketball that's
developed in the past dozen years – that sometimes,
good isn't good enough.
Harold is looking for his first Elite Eight trip
with the Lady Panthers, after taking his old school
– Glenville (W. Va.) State – to that pinnacle in
2006-07, the year before he came to Drury. And
he realizes to make that happen, his Lady Panthers
need to position themselves higher in the Midwest
Regional pecking order – going in as the No. 7 or
No. 8 seed is not conducive to winning, especially
as the eight when it must come on someone else's
home floor.
And Harold understands the best way for his
squad to do so is to stay consistent throughout
the regular season and in the GLVC post-season
tournament, where they've bowed out in the
quarterfinals each of the past two seasons. Costly
losses against fellow regional foes that knock them
down in the final regional pairings.
"We've got to find a way to finish it out in the
conference tournament and set ourselves up for a
better situation," says Harold, who enters his sixth
season with the Lady Panthers with a glittering
115-39 mark. "For whatever reason, we've not
come ready to play in some of those post-season
games of late, and we've got to fix that. I think this
group is capable of doing so."
It's a DU squad that's led by the backcourt
of senior Pritchard – who has led the nation in
three-point field goal percentage in each of her last
two seasons of competition – and Funderburk, who
averaged a team-leading 15.5 points last season,
including a school record-tying 37-point outburst in
December against Missouri-St. Louis.
Both earned All-GLVC First Team honors
last season, when Pritchard topped the NCAA-II
charts with her .492 percentage from long range
(60 of 122) in her first season back after missing
the 2010-11 campaign with a knee injury. She
made .505 percent of her three-point tries in her
sophomore year of 2009-10 to again rank No. 1 in
the country, and needs just 13 treys this season to
surpass Hope Hunt's school record of 212 for a DU
career. She is also, as one would imagine based on
her NCAA success, No. 1 on Drury's career three-
point percentage chart at .456.
Pritchard stands ninth on the all-time DU
scoring charts with 1,147 points entering her final
campaign, while Funderburk is 13th with 911
points and is on a pace to make a run at Amanda Newton's all-time career scoring mark (1,815).
Bracker, a member of the All-GLVC Defensive
Squad, brings the blue-collar aspect to the lineup,
averaging a team-high 5.6 rebounds and leading
the team with 16 blocked shots despite standing just
5-11. Like Funderburk, she's a product of Nixa High
School and has delivered big games offensively as
well from time to time, including an 18-point effort
against Kentucky Wesleyan.
While those three spots in the regular lineup
are secured, it will be an interesting mix from the
remaining eight players to see who sees the most
court time. Junior forward Kylie Williamson will
provide a rugged inside style of play, and likely will
rotate with the sophomore “Twin Towers” duo of 6-2
Emilie Gray and 6-1 Sanayika Shields.
The posts had their moments last season as
freshmen, but were often mired in a deep rotation
that limited their minutes and opportunities. That
won't be the case this season, as they join 6-1
freshman Kalea Parks – an athletic, long forward
from Chicago - in a young group of inside players
with vast potential.
Drury picked up one other newcomer this
season in 5-7 senior point guard Marla Munsen,
a transfer from D-II Chadron (Neb.) State, where
she was a three-year starter. Her addition will allow
Pritchard to move off the point at times. Munsen
started 25 of 26 games last season for the Eagles,
averaging 6.5 points and finishing second on the
team with 4.2 rebounds per game and 24 steals.
She had six double-figure scoring efforts, including
a 14-point, 7-rebound night at Adams State.
Sophomores Shelby White and Lauren McCurry – the latter a sharpshooter who put up a
career-high 14 points off the bench in the season-
ending loss to Ferris State – will also see more time
this season as well, as will sophomore guard Katie Harold, who provides quality depth and a keen
court sense off the bench.
It's a combination that's been picked as the
preseason favorite to win the GLVC West, after shar-
ing top honors last season with Quincy. But these
Lady Panthers want more – specifically, more time
to shine at season's end when the GLVC and NCAA
D-II tournaments take center stage.

about the GLVC
Established in 1978 with a
commitment to the purposes,
fundamental policies and basic
principles of the National Collegiate
Athletic Association, the Great Lakes
Valley Conference (GLVC) has grown to
embody the vision established by the
founders of the organization and has
melded athletic and academic excel-
lence for 34 years.
The GLVC, which at one point over
the past decade grew to 17 members
and was the largest athletic conference in the country
in any division, has fully embraced NCAA Division
II. Although formed and developed as one of the
nation’s premier basketball conferences, the GLVC
now sponsors 18 championship sports, including
football, and is one of the nation’s top NCAA Division
II conferences.
The formation of the GLVC can be traced as
far back as 1972 when the athletic directors of three
member schools - Kentucky Wesleyan, Bellarmine
and Indiana State University at Evansville (now the
University of Southern Indiana) - began preliminary
discussions about forming a basketball conference.
Four years later, the University of Indianapolis
and Saint Joseph’s College expressed interest. On
July 7, 1978, those schools - along with Ashland University - united to become the GLVC.
Since its inception, 16 different institutions
have joined the league. Those members include.
Lewis University (1980), Indiana University-Purdue University at Fort Wayne (1984), Northern Kentucky University (1985), Kentucky State University (1989), Quincy University (1994),
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (1994),
University of Wisconsin-Parkside (1994), Univer-sity of Missouri-St. Louis (1995), Drury Univer-sity (2005), Missouri University of Science and Technology (2005), Rockhurst University (2005),
University of Illinois-Springfield (2008), Maryville
University (2008), William Jewell College (2009)
and McKendree University (2010). On June 8,
2012, Truman State University was admitted to the
conference and will begin competing in the GLVC in
the fall of 2013.
Ashland and Kentucky State left the conference
after the 1994 season, IPFW left the league following
the 2000-01 academic year, and SIU-Edwardsville
exited the league following the 2007-08 academic
year. These departures opened the door for the
seven-team expansion over the past decade, al-
lowing the league to grow 17 institutions. Northern
Kentucky departed following the 2011-12 season to
bring the current membership number to 16 schools.
The conference headquarters are located in
downtown Indianapolis, one of the many major Mid-
west media markets in which the league maintains
a presence. The GLVC has schools in Milwaukee/
Northern Illinois (UW-Parkside), Chicago (Lewis),
Indianapolis (Indianapolis), Louisville (Bellarmine),
Evansville (Southern Indiana), Springfield, Ill. (Illinois
-Springfield), Springfield, Mo. (Drury), Owensboro
(Kentucky Wesleyan), Kansas City (Rockhurst, Wil-
liam Jewell) and St. Louis (Maryville, McKendree,
Missouri-St. Louis).
The conference sponsors 18 championships
in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf,
soccer, indoor and outdoor track and field, and ten-
nis for men and basketball, cross country, softball,
soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field,
golf, and volleyball for women.
GLVC institutions have won 12 national
championships in basketball, including Bellarmine’s
national title in 2011. Kentucky Wesleyan leads all
Division II institutions with eight men’s basketball
titles, while Southern Indiana won the men’s crown
in 1995. Northern Kentucky won the school’s first-
ever women’s basketball national championship
in 2000 and followed that with a national title in
2008. In addition, Northern Kentucky became the
first GLVC member to win a national championship
in men’s soccer, while USI staked claim to the GLVC’s
first baseball national championship in 2010. SIU
Edwardsville was the first GLVC member to win a
national championship in softball in 2007.
The league also takes pride in recognizing
the many academic and athletic accomplishments
achieved by its student-athletes, coaches and
administrators. In 2001, the league announced the
creation of the GLVC Hall of Fame, with the first class
being inducted in 2002. The GLVC annually presents
the Richard F. Scharf Paragon Award to the top male
and female student-athlete in the league, and the
Dr. Charles Bertram Alumni Award of Distinction to
alumni who both succeeded while a GLVC student-
athlete and excelled in accomplishments after gradu-
ation.

AMANDA NEWTON
The only Lady Panther to have her jer-sey retired and one of just five total between the men's and women's pro-
grams, Amanda Newton is Drury's all-time women's leading scorer with 1,815 career points. She also ranks second with 793 career rebounds. Newton is the program's all-time postseason leading scorer with 214 points in 14 games. She was also a three-time WBCA/Kodak All-American, earn-ing that honor following her final three sea-sons at Drury. Newton was the Heartland Conference Player of the Year in 2004-05, a season that saw the Lady Panthers go undefeated in conference play, losing just two games overall (29-2).

rankings/all-time list
The NCAA started conducting a poll for Division II women’s basketball begin-
ning in the 1982-83 season. The chairs of each of the eight NCAA Division II
regions ranked the top 20 teams starting with that season and continued to
conduct the poll until the end of the 1994-95 season.
Starting in the 1995-96 season, the Women’s Basketball Coaches Associa-
tion took over the duties of conducting the poll for Division II Bulletin and expanded
the poll to include the top 25 teams beginning in the first season it conducted the
poll. One coach from every conference in NCAA Division II is represented on the
voting committee as well as one representing the schools playing as independents.
USA Today has served as a sponsor for the Division II women’s basketball poll
since the WBCA started running the weekly rankings.
The data for this project was compiled by John Kean, Sports Information
Director at Missouri S&T, with assistance from the NCAA, WBCA and other sports
information directors in Division II.
