A Message from Ms. LauraDear Families,
The children have been acclimating nicely to their classroom
environments and are beginning to form strong bonds with
their peers and their guides. Thank you for your continual
support in helping us honor the children’s environment.
They are truly taking ownership of the space and it is
beautiful to witness them building foundations for their own
special communities!
The World English Dictionary defines the word “community”
as not only a group of people who share common values or
interests, but also as a group who shares common
ownership and participation. This is certainly true of our
classroom environments where each child is offered the
opportunity to participate in every aspect of care for the
environment, such as preparing snack, watering the plants,
washing the dishes and arranging flowers to beautify the
environment.
An important aspect of the Montessori philosophy is that
children feel respected as contributing members of the
community. Through purposeful work and contribution, each
child finds a sense of belonging and begins to see himself as
an integral part of the community. For this reason, everything
in a Montessori classroom is child-sized including the tools
they use to care for their space.
During your parent conference in November, your guides will
share all the special ways your child contributes to their own
community. Meanwhile, we encourage you to ask your child
about the work they do at school or communicate with your
child’s guides to learn more about your child’s work. We also
encourage you to peruse the photo gallery for your child’s
classroom on our website to see what’s happening in the
classroom and explore the For Small Hand’s catalog we’ve
sent home to see the kinds of tools your child is using in the
classroom.
Enjoy, and we look forward to seeing you at our next
community event on Friday, October 25, after school on the
lawn! Don’t forget your pumpkins!

Athena Kindergarten Science Club We are excited to announce Athena's new "Kindergarten Science Club"! Kindergarteners from all four Primary Classes meet every other Thursday to explore a science experiment. This club is not only an incredibly fun way to expose our third
years to science but also creates a sense of community between all four Kindergarten groups. On the Fridays following their science lesson, the older children teach the science experiment they learned to the rest of the class and have opportunities to write about their hypothesis, observations, and conclusions.
