Driving In The Dark

Driving at Night is very different from driving during the day.

At night your vision and depth perception are reduced significantly.

Many people may think that it is not safe at all, but there are a couple of tips that you can follow to make your night time driving

much safer.

Your Car and Driving at Night

It is best to keep your car maintained to keep safe while driving at night.

Keeping your car clean will help keep your visibility, higher at night.

Dirty windows can cause trouble when trying to view the road or even surrounding

cars.

Headlights that are dirty will reduce the amount of light produced, making the road

less visible and harder to see.

If you turn your headlights on and they do not aim straight in front of the car they could

be misaligned and need to be checked.

While driving, do not keep your high beams on, especially when there is other oncoming traffic on the road, your high beams will just

blind other drivers.

You should always keep your fog lights off during normal night time driving as well.

Fog lights are designed specifically for fog and could potentially blind someone during

normal conditions.

Things You Can Do To Improve Your Night Vision

Your vision in the dark is not as good as it is during the day, but there are many things

that you can do to help improve it.

There is a type of glasses that help reduce glare at night when looking at certain things.

Wearing these glasses can help your vision become clearer.

It is best to keep your interior lights off, to keep your eyes more focused on the dark

road.

Having any interior light can cause your eye to become less acclimated to the dark.

You can also turn your review mirror into its night mode by flipping the small switch at

the bottom.

The mirror’s night mode dims the headlights of cars behind you so you are not blinded.

When there is oncoming traffic try not to look directly ahead at these oncoming lights.

Some people forget to turn their high beams off so it can be quite annoying and very hard

to see the road.

If this happens you should look down closer to the road and use the painted line towards the right side of the lane as a steering guide.

If you keep these tips in mind driving at night can be just as safe as driving during the day.
