Hi guys!

Well since we last spoke the form has continued in 2012 and at the halfway point of the season the Orrcon Steel FPR Ford is sitting pretty in second in the overall championship standings! My team-mate Will Davison is also moving along nicely and he is right behind us, third in the championship.

However the last two events haven’t quite gone our way and it’s seen those two Triple 8 cars pick up the wins in Darwin and Townsville. We know we’re strong in the last half of the season though so the atmosphere within the team is extremely positive. For me personally, this has been my best start to a V8 Supercar season and I’ve man-aged to finish second in the championship on two occasions so this is shaping up to be the year, I can feel it!

But there is still along way to go and a lot of hard yards to put in to get the Orrcon Steel #5 Ford its first ever championship crown. We’re also just about to embark on a new era of V8 Supercars in the development of the new Car of the Future builds and I have tested the prototype car already this year and have to say it is going to be a bright future for our sport.

Cheers,

A message from Frosty

Orrcon Steel FPR’s race to championship glory intensifiesIt certainly has been the year of the Ford as the International V8 Supercars Championship hits the halfway point of the 2012 season. Of the 15 races contested this year the Orrcon Steel-backed Ford Performance Racing (FPR) squad has secured nine race victories with Will Davison pocketing six and Mark ‘Frosty’ Winterbottom

three. Nine wins for one season is already a new record for Ford’s factory outfit and included an incredible seven-straight win streak from Race 5 in Hamilton, New Zealand to Race 11 at Phillip Island.

The tremendous start to the year has seen Frosty pick-up an additional six podiums and

three pole positions to add to his three wins and Davison also with three pole positions and five podium results. The fine performances by both cars and the sister car of Dave Reynolds in The BottleO entry has sparked new energy into Ford’s factory squad as the team are fighting hard for their first ever V8 Supercar crown.

Orrcon Steel-backed FPR driver Mark ‘Frosty’ Winterbottom celebrated his 250th race start in the best possible fashion by winning Race 6 of the 2012 V8 Supercars Championship in New Zealand on Sunday. Frosty held off a hard-charging Jamie Whincup in what was one of the most thrilling final lap battles in recent history to claim his first championship race win of the season.

“This was an awesome result and it’s good to win anytime but to win my 250th start is pretty special,” commented an excited Frosty. “It was great to fight with Jamie [Whincup] and hold on at the end there. You’ve got your curb strikes, you’ve got tyre grip and all these elements and you know Jamie is one of the best passers in this category so we had to work hard to defend him but I was never going to let it go, it was a good win.”

The team celebrated on Saturday also with their third championship race win of the year through #6 Ford driver Will Davison. Frosty, in the #5 Orrcon Steel Ford was in fine form and up to third after 10 laps of the race complete but was robbed of any chance of victory by steering damage on lap 17 which forced him into the garage as he eventually finished down in 23rd. It was a disappointing end for Frosty but importantly he did not retire from the race and, in turn, salvaged some points towards his championship campaign.

Round 4 - Trading Post Perth Challenge,Barbagallo Raceway, WA

Page 9: Driving Force - 2012 - Vol II

Over in the west Frosty won the opening V8 Supercars race at of the Tradingpost Perth Challenge by over three seconds from Jamie Whincup. After running second to Whincup for the opening half of the 50-lap race the Orrcon Steel FPR Ford came to life thanks to a set of soft tyres, a determined driver and a super

pitstop from the Orrcon Steel Racing crew.

“It’s was great to pick up a win in Perth considering how ordinary we were at the track just 12 months ago,” commented Frosty. “The guys did a great job and to roll out of the truck with the base setup we’ve had all year and

win by over three seconds is really positive.”

The victory meant Frosty went back-to-back after his win in the previous V8 Supercars race in Hamilton and put him equal with Todd Kelly on the all-time V8 Supercars winners list in 14th – just one win away from the great Jim Richards’ tally.

Orrcon Steel sponsored FPR came up trumps on Sunday winning the remaining two races at Barbagallo Raceway for the fourth round of the V8 Supercars Championship. Will Davison backed-up Winterbottom’s win on Saturday by taking a clean sweep of wins on Sunday to make it a three-from-three for the weekend for the Orrcon Steel-backed FPR team. Frosty’s efforts saw him stand on all three podiums for the weekend as he closed the gap to championship leader Jamie Whincup.

Round 5 - Phillip Island 300Phillip Island GP Circuit, VICOrrcon Steel Racing dominated another weekend of V8 Supercars action with Will Davison winning Sunday’s 200km race at Phillip Island to add to Mark Winterbottom’s win on Saturday. The victories saw FPR secure a seven-straight winning streak in the 2012 season. The FPR team won Race 11 of the championship on strategic intelligence to hand Davison the win and the championship lead back, over Jamie Whincup.

“What an awesome race on

Saturday! That was a good early birthday present,” Frosty commented. “The car was perfect and the boys did an amazing job to put us on pole and back it up with a superior car in the afternoon. If you lead the Championship everyone is chasing you and thats where I want to be so to be just 10 points off Whincup is a huge boost to the confidence.”

Unfortunately Sunday wasn’t the perfect day for Frosty in the #5 Orrcon Steel FPR Ford after losing five spots early in the race, having to ‘double-

stack’ his first pitstop – he fought back hard to finish Sunday’s race in sixth. Race 10 on Saturday saw Frosty pick up pole position and the race win for Orrcon Steel Racing but it wasn’t the same story for Davison who was involved in high speed incident with Jamie Whincup which took the pair out of the race. Race 11 contained four Safety Car periods – the first of which triggered a rush to the pitlane on just the fourth lap of the race.

Round 6 - Skycity Triple CrownHidden Valley Raceway, DarwinFrosty put in a solid effort in the V8 Supercars most northern, Australian-based round with two podium finishes for the weekend at the SKYCITY Triple Crown in Darwin. Orrcon Steel-backed FPR teammate Will Davison had a strong race on Saturday finishing second but could only manage sixth for Sunday’s longer, 69-lap feature race. Despite battling a viral infection all weekend Frosty put in a stellar effort to finish with two third placings and hold a firm third place in the overall championship standings, just 49 points behind current series leader Jamie Whincup.

“The car was definitely hard work in that last stint but we had flashes of speed,” commented Frosty. ‘I was good on the hard tyre and then had a massive gap to everyone until we changed the strategy to go onto the softs. It was a great call and one we had planned but each set of tyres from then on was inconsistent. That aside, third on a day where we are struggling is a good result.”

After collecting pole Davison went with a slightly different setup for Sunday’s race but couldn’t quite match the pace of the Triple 8 cars. Davison slipped back to second in the championship standings albeit by the slender margin of just 38 points to Whincup. Over 40,000 spectators joined in on the action for Race 13 of the Championship at Hidden Valley Raceway over the weekend.

A strong performance by Orrcon Steel Racing saw both FPR Fords finish inside the top-5 for Race 15 of the International V8 Supercars Championship at the Sucrogen Townsville 400. Mark Winterbottom picked up a fifth place finish at the conclusion of the 200km race with teammate Will Davison picking up a solid podium finish in third.

“Townsville is a tough track to pass on, but with brakes going it is impossible. It’ also a really tough event inside the car physically so for me it was all about survival,” commented Frosty. “It was a pretty tight finish on Saturday. The race was a bit of a shambles with several Safety Cars and we were caught up with back markers in the final stages, which pretty much ruined my chance of a win. As bad weekends go we had two good lots of points and that’s what you need to do when you are not on song.”

Starting from pole on Saturday Frosty began strong before a series of Safety Cars drew the field back together and a final ten-lap showdown commenced with current series leader Jamie Whincup. Despite a massive push at the end of the race to close the gap considerably on Whincup, Frosty fell perilously short of the win but did secure second place and his third consecutive podium finish in the championship. Another healthy Townsville crowd once again turned out to watch some intense V8 Supercars action as the event continues as one of the marquee races on the calendar.

Frosty’s postcardFrosty has continued his travels around the country spreading the Team Steel message and most recently took part in a promotional tour of North Queensland, one of the strongest markets for Orrcon Steel. There was no messing around as Frosty hit the ground running in Townsville heading from the airport straight to Mix 106.3 FM’s studio for a stint on the CK and Blake breakfast show. After that he headed to our good friends at Pacific

Coast Engineering for a BBQ lunch with the workmen and women where Frosty signed several posters and pieces of merchandise before a quick tour of the impressive facility.

From there it was a quick lap up the famous Castle Hill for a photoshoot with the Townsville Bulletin and the Orrcon Steel FPR showcar. The backdrop of the city of Townsville made for a perfect front-page picture to accompany a nice story in the paper on Frosty and the lead-

up the Townsville round the following month. Then it was off to Townsville Bulletin HQ for an hour session online to answer questions from fans across the country. After a quick visit to our good friends at Channel 7, Frosty had some time to rest but there would be no resting for one of the fittest men in V8 Supercars as the Orrcon Steel driver went back to the top of the 938 ft high Castle Hill, only this time on foot! The day concluded on a nice dinner with staff and customers of Orrcon

Page 19: Driving Force - 2012 - Vol II

Steel in Townsville where Frosty shared a few behind-the-scenes tales from his years on the V8 Supercars circus.

With no time to rest Frosty was up bright and early for a flight to Cairns to visit Orrcon Steel’s most northern branch for a BBQ with staff and fans. Off the plane it was a quick stop into SeaFM for a studio interview with Billy and Bec on the breakfast show where Frosty was put through his paces in a Spider drinking competition

with Bec. Lucky he’s fast behind the wheel because, behind a straw, was absolutely dominated by the SeaFM presenter! It was a good turnout of fans and friends to Orrcon Steel Cairns where Frosty spoke to the media, signed autographs for the fans and cooked snags for everyone who headed down. That was it for Cairns as Frosty then headed back to Brisbane for an engagement with FPR and to complete another successful trip with Orrcon Steel Racing.
