SPORTS DAY Our Sports Day was successful with students participating in a range of activities. Having the younger students involved in tabloids as well as running races kept them engaged and active throughout most of the morning. The most lasting impressions that I have of the day are of the students who I saw give their all to perform at their best. An individual's effort is more important than the final result. Sport can be a real character building exercise. Thanks to all involved for helping to make the sports day run so smoothly. Some of the older students have qualified to represent Driver at the PARCS Athletics Carnival at Fred's Pass this Friday. We wish them all the best and know they will be fine representatives of our school.

From the Principal

We would like to thank our whole school community for a wonderful first semester in 2011. It has been extremely busy, very successful and a lot of fun. Our farm and kitchen are well under way; our building works are nearing completion and all staff are very focused around improving student attendance and outcomes, particularly in English, Maths and across student well-being and safety.

A Great Sports Day

What an amazing Sports Day and congratulations to Chaney on their win! To our wonderful students your behaviour, energy, sportsmanship and drive is to be commended! Thank you Neil Stephenson and Jarred Sack for their coordination, Mick Savage for his expertise on the line marking, and to the 15 helpers who turned up at 6.30am in the cold to erect the shade structures. Also special thanks to Andrew Dudley from ADEVENTS for setting up an excellent sound system for the day.

Schools Sustainability Summit at Girraween Primary School

Congratulations to Driver Leaders Renee, Sam, Ali, Ella, Ashley, Mariana, Jason, Riley, Claudia and Piper who represented our school proudly at the 2011 Sustainability Summit at Girraween Primary School. It was wonderful to see their fantastic garden and farm and to share ideas with so many schools across Arnhem, Katherine and other Top End schools. Our Two Stars were:

• We learned how to reduce and recycle waste - for example: bring wrapper free food to school and have a school system in place to recycle paper and plastic.

• Millner uses solar panels to produce energy - this is a more environmentally friendly way to produce energy and it saves their school money

Second Semester Staffing

Firstly, I would like to acknowledge Mrs Mary Harman’s great efforts in the Assistant Principal position whilst Mrs Alison Buchanan has been on maternity leave. We wish Mrs Harman well at Ludmilla School in Term 3 2011!

Mrs Jenny Ashton is taking Long Service Leave in Term 3 and will be replaced by Mrs Marion Patterson who is currently covering Mrs Young whilst she is on sick leave. Mrs Edgecombe will be away for the first three weeks of Term 3 and Mr Libien will be replacing her for that time.

Have a well earned holiday and we hope to see all students safe back at school on Tuesday 26 June 2011!

Volunteers Wanted - for Kitchen Garden Program The success of this unique and exciting project relies on the support of volunteers. There is nothing more satisfying than sharing a delicious meal created with fresh produce that you have grown from seed to harvest. You don’t have to be a green thumb or a Master

Chef, you just have to love growing food, eating food & being with children.

If you would like to volunteer in the kitchen or garden, whether you have one hour to spare or a whole morning, we would love to hear from you. The Program runs on:- Garden: Monday and Tuesday Kitchen: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday Contact: Sherrida Edgecombe (Program Co-ordinator) Email: [email protected] Magdalene Mahomet (Kitchen Specialist) Email: [email protected] Tony Sterling (Garden Specialist) Email: [email protected] Phone: 89359000

McCAIN is giving away over $500,000 worth of veggie patch equipment to primary

schools during 2011. The McCain School Vegie Patches Program provides schools with the opportunity to earn points which can then be redeemed for gardening equipment including fertiliser, wheelbarrows, seeds and soil. Families are able to help Driver Primary earn these points. If you purchase products from the McCAIN frozen vegetable

and McCAIN Purely Potato range, cut out the barcode(s) on the pack and send them into school by 4 October 2011.

Our coin worm trail was a huge success raising $806.70.

Thank you to all who participated.

Defence Families Update

Wow, can you believe we are nearing the end of Semester One already? The children are getting really excited about the up and coming school holidays and are starting to mention some of the great holiday plans that they have. I would like to send lots of love to the families whose partners are just returning from deployment and to the families who have partners currently overseas, on course or exercise; keep your chin up and know that there is support from myself and DCO if you need it.

When visiting the children in class I take photos of them at work and at play. These photos will be used to make a memory book at the end of the year or for emailing to parents who are away to keep them informed of their child’s school life. If you would like to receive the photos of your children, please supply me with your email address and I will send them out to you on a fortnightly basis.

My hours at Driver are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 12.30pm until 4.00pm. I can be contacted on 8935 9000 or by email on [email protected] Sincerely,

Cazz Smith
