Drive Space is program supplied with Windows 95. This program is used to compress the information stored on the disks in order to provide more storage device

It is used to compress the information stored on the disks

in order to provide more storage device

Compression just means that all or portion of our

hard disk can be made to appear much large than

it actually is. Windows 95 supports two varieties of

disk compression

Drive space

Double space and drive space. Windows compresses the

data on the disk by creating a hidden host drive that contains

the compressed data, called a Compressed Volume File

(CVF)

Compress (or) Uncompress

Click on the start button programs Accessories System Tools DriveSpace

Select the drive we want to compress or uncompress

On the Drive menu, click Compress

The compress a Drive dialog box appears

Click on Option button

Click the Start button to begin the compression or

uncompression

Click Compress Now. We will be shown the percent of

compression as it proceeds

At the end of the compression process, we will see a

window as shown in figure

Advantages Of Drive Space

It compresses, uncompressed disk

We can mount compressed drives and unmount

it

Upgrading a compressed drive to drive space

increases the total capacity of our drive

Drive space can also use the free space on an

uncompressed drive to create a new, empty compressed

drive

Host drive can be created and its drive name can be

changed
