NATURE RESEARCHSTATE OF THE ART FINDINGS & DIRECTIONSTHOMAS VAN ROMPAY
NATURERESEARCH
• PREVIOUS RESEARCH- Nature > health, cognition and
wellbeing(!)- Nature > inspiration,
creativity(?)- @Work @School
• THIS TALK- Nature and Creativity- Study in Dutch High School
NATUREWHY?
• Biophilia hypothesis (Fromm, 1964; Wilson, 1984)
- We are nature and therefore respond to nature
• Fractal-based account (Mandlebrot, 1977)
- Repeating patterns displayed at every scale of perception
NATURE3RD APPROACH – ESSENTIAL PATTERNS
• Essential patterns or features?- Not much research yet, but:
1. “Mystery”“Scenes that give the impression that there is more to explore if one were to go into the setting”
> fascination, curiosity
NATUREPATTERNS - BREATHING SPACE
2. “Spaciousness”
Spacious environments induce more abstract, creative thinking and stimulate self expression
(Meyers-Levy & Zhu, 2007; Okken, Van Rompay & Pruyn, 2014).
CURRENT RESEARCHNATURE AND CREATIVE PERFORMANCE
• Hypotheses:- Spacious = Space for ideas to arise & develop (exploration phase of
innovation)- Mystery: unpredictable, ambiguous > triggers curiosity (essential state of
mind for creativity)
• Setting: - Classroom in Dutch High School in which participants (13-15 years of
age) were exposed to slideshows of images varying on these constructs (based on pretest).

STUDY DESIGNCONDITIONS & RESULTS
Spacious +Spacious -
MYSTERY –
MYSTERY +Spacious +Spacious -
• (Design of) environmental setting is important to creativity.
• Nature-inspired approach is fruitful.
• Essentials:- Mystery (wild, unpredictable
character)- Spaciousness (space for ideas to
develop)

NATURE MEETS DESIGNDESIGN APPROACHES
Design approachesMacro level: objects or processes observed in nature are copiedMicro level: analyses of low-level features in natural stimuliResearch-based: translate findings into nature’s working Multisensory Design
Can we translate the beneficial effects of nature on people’s wellbeing to design? And if so, how?

NATURE MEETS DESIGNKEY INSIGHTS
Nature inspires designers and it will continue to do so
Design can find more optimal solutions than copying parts of nature
Effects on different aspects of wellbeing and in various contexts
DESIGN FOR WELLBEINGPROJECTS / APPLICATION
Translation from fundamental knowledge to design is needed
Design approaches need to be further explored and evaluated
