Worship Schedule for August, 2017

Times Of Worship THE PASTOR’S PENFriends,

Some of you are subscribed to receive my articles from “Life Support System.” It is a blog I post articles to once every week or two. One of the articles that has gotten a lot of attention lately is titled How I’m Like a Pencil. Here it is I hope you enjoy it. By the way, you can sign up for the emails at http://stevegoodier.blogspot.com.

It occurs to me that I have a lot in common with a pencil. That’s right – a simple and humble little pencil. Not the fancy mechanical kind. That’s too high-maintenance for me. And I’m not as showy as a plume pen or as smooth as a ball point. I don’t live in bold strokes like a heavy marker. But I’m a lot like a pencil. Here’s how:

1. Like a pencil, I have a built-in eraser. I can correct my mistakes. No, I can’t change the past, but I can make it right again. And if I can’t erase history (after all, what’s done is done) I can at least erase a great deal of guilt and anger with forgiveness.

2. Like a pencil, I do better if I’m sharpened once in a while. My mind and skills grow dull without occasional honing. Even my spirit and attitudes need refining if I’m to be at my best. And there is something else, too. I find that the difficulties of life wear away at me, and they can either grind me down or shape me into a person who is more capable and creative. The sharpening I get from living through tough times is often painful, but I know it can make me a better person.

3. Pencils work best in a skilled hand. And like a pencil, I can do some pretty terrific things with a little guidance. Other people bring out the best in me, and with the help of others, I can do far more than I ever can alone.

4. Like a pencil, I should leave my mark whenever possible. I too often underestimate my influence on another. I have daily opportunities to leave something good behind. That is what it means to leave my mark. It may be in small ways, it may be in the lives of people I love, people I have touched or nurtured, or even in incidental conversations struck with strangers. But, I have a mark to leave and should use every opportunity to leave something good behind.

5. Like a pencil, it is what is on the inside that matters. A pencil without lead is useless. And a yellow pencil will not do when a black or red pencil is called for. What is on the inside is all important. My outer appearance matters less than I probably think, while it’s the stuff on the inside that folks notice about me. Whether it is understanding or intolerance, love or bitterness, peace or unrest, kindness or self-centeredness, hope or despair, courage or fear, what is on the inside matters most.

August 6 -Am I good enough for God? August 13 -Mission Sunday August 20 - Does God actually have a purpose for me?

August 25 - Do people really change?

(The Pastor’s Pen, continued)

6. A pencil works best on paper or canvass. It will never leave its mark on water and will wear itself down against a mirror. I do best knowing my strengths and limitations. I can’t do everything well and that is okay. There is still plenty of good to be done by doing what I do best.

7. And finally, like a pencil, the biggest part of my purpose in this life can be summed up in three words: to be useful. When I’m too broken to hold it together, when everything is ground away or worn down, when I no longer have anything to contribute, I know my life is coming to an end. But until then, my job is to be useful.

Like I said, I have a lot in common with a pencil.

ANGEL HOUSE APPRECIATION

Thank you to all the volunteers, old and new, who made our hosting week a success! The families appreciate your kindness and friendship, and they all left feeling cared for and hopeful. Our next week will be September 3-9, so if you’d like to help again, or have just been waiting for the right time, we’ll have another opportunity to share our FUMC hospitality again soon!

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

FUMC has one more Habitat for Humanity building Saturday planned for this summer! We will need ten volunteers to help with home construction on August 19. No previous construction skills are required. All tools, gloves and safety gear are provided. Typical tasks include framing, drywall, interior and exterior painting and landscape related work. Construction site volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Come join the fun. Watch The Window for further information as this work date nears. In July we focused on the “Care of Creation” and made cat and dog toys for the Larimer Humane Society and nesting boxes for Kestrels. In August, we will focus

on helping people through clothing. Our donation this month will be socks and underwear for children to give them for back to school.

This is sponsored by HNS. Please put donations in the big purple box under the easel. Sign up to help! If you have any questions contact Laura Morgan at (970) 481-4567.

FUMC IN THE COMMUNITY . . .

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR OUR POPCORN MINISTRY

There are kids who have no safe place to go after school except here at FUMC. These kids come from families whose safety for their children is a priority but who cannot be home when their children are dismissed from school. The older kids have responsibility for safety of their younger brothers and sisters. These kids know that FUMC welcomes them, safe from gang recruiters and other concerns. These middle school students and their parents count on our ministry. Last year we ministered to approximately 15-20 teens every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Popcorn Ministry needs you! We need you to provide your presence and snack making “expertise” from 2:30-4:00 pm on weekdays. We need you to “be there” in this Matthew 25 ministry for kids who seek a safe place and a listening ear. You can make a difference if a child is being bullied. You can make a difference as to how a child sees him or herself. You can change a child’s life…just by being who you are, a person who cares. Please call Ann Kessler at (970) 290-2796 with questions or “yes!” response. If interested, please attend our planning meeting on August 9 at 12:00 pm in Youth Range. Lunch Provided.

VOLUNTEERS & BUDDY READERS NEEDED FOR CORNER 2 CORNER

Every Tuesday and Thursday during the school year between 3:45 - 5:00 pm children from Truscott Elementary are invited to FUMC for school skill help and enrichment projects, as well as playing the Buddy Reading Game sponsored by the Loveland Public Library. We are putting together our team of volunteers for the 2017-2018 school year. If you would like to volunteer on a regular basis or would like to offer a day or two to share your talents with the kids, we need you. If you would like to help please contact Laura Morgan at (970) 481-4567 or email her at:[email protected].

TRUSCOTT SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE

As many of you know, our teachers today often use their own money to buy school supplies for their students. We’d like to help our neighborhood teachers this year with items that they always find in short supply. To that end, we’ll be having a supply drive through the month of August. Bring your donations to Lobby Court any Sunday in August, and we’ll make sure they get to Truscott. As always, if you prefer to donate financially, that’s appreciated also. Just make your checks payable to FUMC and write “Truscott” in the memo field. Here’s a list of supplies they need:

• Pencil top erasers • Erasers • Headphones/earbuds for Chrome books • Boxes and boxes of kleenex • Glue sticks • Dry erase markers- both black thick and a few colored ones • Good quality pencils: suggested brands are USA brand or Ticonderoga pencils. • Composition notebooks • Spiral notebooks • Timers (kitchen timers, egg timers, and so on - sturdy would be best) • Clipboards • Sharpies

CHILDREN’S MINISTRYSUNDAY SCHOOLA new year of Sunday school will be beginning on September 10 and we need teachers and shepherds for all ages, preschool through high school. If you have heart for a child of any age please contact Ann Kessler at 970-290-2796 and she will help you get connected.

SoulShopforYouthWorkers

Soul Shop™ for Youth Workers is a one-day, faith-based training designed specifically to equip persons to minister to youth who are impacted by suicidal desperation. Since 17% of youth are seriously considering suicide and 10% of youth will attempt suicide before age 30, Soul Shop™ for Youth Workers is essential training for anyone who ministers to youth in a paid or unpaid capacity. Special attention is focused on youth-specific issues of impulsivity, contagion, and confidentiality. The training lays a scriptural foundation for ministering to suicidal desperation among youth, and includes how to recognize warning signs, how to engage in life-saving conversations, and how to keep youth safe. In addition, Soul Shop™ for Youth Workers provides practical ways to integrate this ministry into lesson plans, group activities, and one on one conversation. Please let anyone you think may be interested in this class know about it. Laura Morgan and Ann Kessler took the class in January and thought it would be a valuable class for anyone.

YOUTH MINISTRYSENIOR HIGH MISSION TRIP UPDATE

On June 23 - July 1, the senior high youth traveled to Portland, OR to work for Potluck in the Park, Habitat for Humanity, Portland Rescue Mission and the Oregon Food Bank. We had 21 youth and 6 adults on the trip. Our fun activities were going to several beaches and having lunch at the Tillamook Cheese Factory and having a BBQ at Laura Morgan’s sister’s house one evening. We served dinner to about 400 homeless people at Potluck in the Park. We painted a whole house the two days we worked for Habitat. We then served breakfast at the rescue mission to another 400 people and did service projects throughout their building for them. On Thursday evening, we packed over 10,000 packages of garbanzo beans. We stayed overnight in Des in Burley, ID both ways and they had ice cream for us when we got in on our way to Port-land and on the way home they hosted a BBQ for us. Thank you all for your support and prayers! Come hear more about our trips on August 13 during all church services.

MID HIGH MISSION TRIP UPDATE

This year we worked at the Camp on the Boulder in McLeod, MT from June 5-10. On the way, we visited Little Bighorn and had dinner at Fuddruckers. We spent all our time at the camp and it was gorgeous. The way in was bumpy, driving 14 miles on a dicey dirt road that was in the midst of construction but the scenery was amazing. The camp in situated along the Boulder River, which was running high and fast. We cleaned up the ¼ mile river walk, cleaned three cabins, painted bunk beds, cleaned the volleyball court, put the mini golf course back up, cleaned scrub away from some buildings and baked cookies. We finished a 1000-piece puzzle in our off time and played on the swings as well as enjoying a fire several nights. Our free day was in Thermopolis, WY. We enjoyed the petro glyphs and hot springs while we were there. Thank you for your support!
