Sharpen your focus on drill and blast advancement...

Conference overview:

This two day focused event has been designed to ensure those responsible for drill and blast

productivity, safety and cost can gain clear insight in to where advancement is emerging. Throughout

drill and blast processes real improvement is underway, and it’s key to now scrutinise what has been

achieved and which techniques look set to make a real impact. Achieving consistent, cutting edge drill

and blast procedures to meet productivity expectations is high on everyone’s agenda – this event has

been developed to provide a concise overview of future and current break through techniques.

Importantly insight into their practical successful application will also be shared. Drawing on

expertise from across the globe to help define the future of drill and blasting will provide a great

opportunity to ensure techniques in Australian mining remain at the forefront.

Key topics will include:Global blasting breakthroughs achieving real results - overview of future excellence.

Advancements in electronics and their real impact on cost.

Drill and blast cost reduction – investigating the future techniques which will impact your bottom line.

Case studies from pioneering drill and blast engineers -what’s being achieved and what are the

challenges?

Applying advanced technologies available to improve the safety and quality

of your blasting outcomes.

Setting up for optimum team efficiency- what it takes to drive real improvement.

Investigating where future improvement lies, anticipate the development to come.

Assessing the safety advancement systems in the pipeline.

Attendees: Those responsible for drill and blast operations and processes, now and in the future:

Drill and Blast Engineers | Drill and Blast Managers | Drill and Blast Superintendents

The pre-conference work-shops are designed to provide delegates deeper insight into specific areas of drill and blast innovation. They offer a focused and interactive environment to discuss current drill and blast challenges and investigate how to optimise productivity through new techniques and strategies. Work-shop hosts will ensure delegates leave with new ways to pursue drill and blast improvement.

Alastair has more than 25 years in the mining and resources industry. His primary focus has been top level explosive and blasting technology. Alastair has a strong background in emulsion chemistry and explosive technology and an intimate knowledge of the explosive industry worldwide. He has been a Director and Board Member of the International Society of Explosive Engineers since 2006. In 2009 Alastair was appointed Adjunct Associate Professor with the Sustainable Minerals Institute of the University of Queensland to support research and in explosive research and detonics.

Pre Conference work-shops - Tuesday 12th July 2011Conference registration 8.30 am

12.30 to 1.30 lunch

Recognising future essential techniques to avoid pitfalls in underground blasting

Assessing the outcomes of recent studies and how these shape the future

Overcoming obstacles and preconceptions around underground coal blasting

Ensuring future accurate use of explosives, anticipating pioneering developments inthis area

Commercial explosives are solidly based around ammonium nitrate. The products are fairly mature and the industry does not readily accept rapid change for safety and operational reasons. This work shop will explore some of the current ideas about explosive types and their applications. The importance of quality and consistency are vital in improving blasting performance in the field. The time will include the opportunity to discuss shortcomings and potential areas for improvement in products and product supply.

Workshop 1 (9.00 am to 12.30 pm):Investigating current trends in explosive quality

Workshop 2 (1.30 pm to 4.45 pm: Underground blasting: Investigating future solutions and strategies beyond 2011

This presentation follows the development of new techniques to recycle rubber collected from waste vehicle tyres as a fuel for explosive products. A method to reduce product segregation of raw materials has been developed and improved detonation characteristics of the final product have been improved. A study of the influence of different rubber particle sizes on performance has been made. Field trial results demonstrated the potential to reduce AN consumption by up to 20% and at the same time utilise recycled products in blasting in blasting applications.
