An exceptional period home with extensive accommodation, annexe and swimming pool set in delightful grounds.

LOCATIONDrift House is located on a quiet residential road less than a mile from the lovely Georgian market town of Stamford, where there are over 600 listed buildings, and a wide range of shops, bars and restaurants, including the well-known George Hotel. There is a thriving Arts Centre and Burghley House and grounds, which are within walking distance, have open parkland, golf, formal gardens and a year-round calendar of events that includes Burghley Horse Trials. There are further shopping and leisure facilities available in Peterborough which lies 13 miles to the South and Rutland Water, (9 miles) offers a range of outdoor activities including sailing, cycling and trout fishing. The area has an excellent choice of state and private education in Stamford. Oundle, Uppingham and Oakham are also close by. For travel, Stamford railway station has connections to the Midlands, Stansted and to Peterborough, for the high speed direct train services to London Kings Cross and the North whilst for road travel the property has easy access to the A1.

DESCRIPTIONThis charming Grade II period property was built in 1909 originally as a gentleman’s residence subsequently forming part of Priory College school until being converted back into a splendid private residence set in around one acre of secluded mature grounds. The house has a handsome façade with shaded front verandah, whilst inside it retains much of its historic character with original features such as sash windows, handsome open fireplaces, cornicing, parquet floors and a magnificent oak staircase. More recent extensions to the rear of the house have added a stunning Kitchen & Breakfast Room with doors out to a sunny terrace and a Games Room Annexe opening out to the swimming pool set in a sheltered courtyard. Further recent updates such as an excellently fitted Kitchen, and stylish bath and shower rooms give the house a contemporary edge, and it now mixes Edwardian elegance with modern living spaces well-suited to every-day family life. The extensive accommodation offers a wealth of opportunities to suit many individual requirements; as well as the existing self-contained one bedroom Annexe there is further potential to create a separate Living space within the house itself. Surrounded by well-maintained, attractive gardens and immaculately presented throughout, Drift House is a charming, welcoming and unique home in an excellent location.overview

“We moved here 16 years ago having been particularly attracted by the Edwardian character of the property and its location,” remembers Helen. “We

wanted to be within walking distance of the

schools and station in Stamford, while also having

easy access to the A1 and Peterborough.”

“A lot of work was needed because although originally a residential house, it had for many years provided a matron’s flat and dormitories for Priory College. We

demolished the more recent dormitory additions and removed the partitions in the house, uncovering

the Edwardian features in the process, which were largely intact and unspoilt. We then built

contemporary extensions to suit our needs.”

“There’s also a dedicated TV room and there’s a large gym with a bathroom, which could provide another en-suite bedroom,” adds Ian. “Over the double garage there’s a studio apartment, so there’s a good degree of versatility in the accommodation.”

“The garden room also connects to the games room, which has bi-fold doors to the courtyard as well and has a sitting room above – an excellent teenage hub. To one side of the courtyard, we’ve developed a rose garden and a small orchard, while a private area of lawn at the

rear is separated from the main lawn by a yew hedge.”
