    ThosesheepwereasmanythornsinourfleshthatdaywemadeoffinthedeepwoodsfromLakeChamplain.Travelwasnewtothem,andwhatwith tearing through thicketsand runningwild ineveryslash,theykeptusjumping.Whentheywerelegwearyandusedtotravel,theybegantogoquietly.Butslowworkitwasatbest,tenortwelvemilesadaybeingallwecoulddo, for theweatherwashotandourroad like thewayof the transgressor.Oursecondnight in

    Fortunately,

    we

    were allwalking, and nobodywas hurt.My father andDriwerebusyhalfadayrightingup,astheycalledit,mendingthetongueand cover, and getting the cart on itswheels anddown the steeppitch.

    AftertwodaysoftrailtravelwecameoutontheChateaugayroad,stoppingawhile tobaitoursheepandcattleon the tamegrassandtenderbriers.Itwasagreatjoytoseetheclearroad,withhereand

    the

    marigold,

    the

    hollyhock, and the fragrant honeysuckle.We got to the tavern atChateaugay about dusk, and put up for the night, asbecomes aChristian.

    Nextafternoonwecametoroughroadsagain,campingatsundownalong the shore of a noisybrook. The dogbegan tobark fiercelywhilesupperwasmaking,andscurriedoffintoathicket.

    listened.

    Thetairdogsa leetlescairt,saidhe.Guesswebettergo nseewhutsthematter.

    He took his rifle and I my sword,I never thought of anotherweapon,makingoff through thebrush.Thedogcamewhining toDriand rushingon,eager forus to follow.Wehurriedafterhim,and inamomentDriand thedog,whowereaheadofme,halted

    suddenly.

    Ithadput inatCornwallwhen the stormbegan.The captain saidthat theothersectionsofourrafthadpassedsafely. In theduskoftheearlyeveningaBritishschoonerbroughtusto.

    Wonderwhat thatmeans? said the skipper,straininghiseyes inthedusk,

    shouldlayholdonmeanddragmeunder?ThenIthoughtofrapidsthatmightsmothermewiththeirsprayordashmetohiddenrocks.Often I liftedmy ears,marvelling at themanyvoicesof the river.Sometimes I thought Ihearda roaring like thatof theSault,but itwasonlyaripplegrowing intofleecywavesthatrockedmeasinacradle.Themanysoundswereabove,below,andbesideme,someweirdandhollowandunearthly. Icouldhearrocksrollingover intheirsleeponthebottom,and,whenthewaterwasstill,asoundlike
