10 Tips For How To Dress For AJob Interview
1. Choose a Solid Color That Isn’t Distracting
You want the hiring manager to focus on you, not on your neon pink paisley vest. Instead of busy
patterns and bold colors, choose solid colors that reflect your personality - but aren’t too loud or too
dull.
2. Suit up.
A bespoke well fitting suit will always give a better impression than a ready-to-wear suit. Invest in a tailor-made wool suit with two buttons that will allow you to walk into your interview exuding
confidence.
3. Show Sophistication With ‘Smart Casual’.
A jacket or blazer over a polo or collared dress shirt can work fine in some situations. Pair that with a great pair of trousers and you’ll have a perfectly
presentable look. Women can get away with a decent skirt or a pair of trousers, but avoid flashy fabrics such as satin, lace, or chiffon. Avoid flashy
costume jewelry.
4. Ink, Piercings, and Facial Hair.
If you’re unsure of the company’s policy, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Take out facial piercings, and cover up tattoos until you know the lay of the land. When it comes to facial hair, keep it trimmed and
clean. An unkempt beard screams “slacker.”
5. Pay Attention to the Details.
Your choice of clothing might seem like a small factor in the larger scheme of landing a job, but
making a winning impression with your wardrobe is more important than you think. It’s also a factor
that’s completely within your control, so why wouldn’t you do everything you can to dress the
part?
6. Freshen up.
Make sure you have fresh breath! Brush your teeth before you leave for the interview, and don’t eat
before the interview. Also. don’t smoke right before an interview.
7. Don't Neglect Accessories.
Make sure your shoes are polished, brushed, or both. If you have a leather briefcase or purse and
they’re still in good shape, now's the time to break them out. If you don't, a nice portfolio binder will do
just fine. Just make sure they’re in tip top shape.
8. Easy on the scents.
Make sure that deodorants, perfumes, and other heavily scented substances are kept in check.
Provided you don’t ‘stink’, strong scents and heavy makeup can have a negative effect in a job
interview.
9. Dress comfortably.
You want to make sure that what you’re wearing makes you confident, professional - but comfortable. If what you are wearing creates discomfort or makes
you feel vulnerable, your performance in the interview could be effected.
10. Talk to someone who works at the company.
By talking to someone who works at the company where you're interviewing, find out what the
‘standard’ attire is for the employees. In some organizations, you may even be able to contact the human resources department to ask a hiring officer
what he or she recommends.
