DREAM:In TUMKUR

Three weeks after 13 students of the NICC were into their training in the DREAM:IN methodology and associated lesson plans as part of their DREAM:IN Global Academic Program, a decision was needed on where exactly they would undertake their Dream Journey.

Meanwhile, the DREAM:IN project had been presented in New Delhi to Dr Sam Pitroda and the National Innovation Council. One of the suggestions that the National Innovation Council came up with was to try to focus the DREAM:IN methodology on a single district and design and develop a prototype for social and business entrepreneurial ventures for that district by means of the a Dream Journey, Dreamscaping and a Dream Conclave.

Back in Bangalore, DREAM:IN connected with the Manipal Foundation which saw promise and potential in the methodology to spur social transformation and development. Manipal Foundation had initiated social work in Tumkur district, just 70 km from Bangalore and fast developing into a satellite for the metropolis, and suggested that the district be adopted for the project. The consensus was that Tumkur should be where the district prototype is initiated.

This decision was followed up by means of several scoping trips to Tumkur where DREAM:IN found a happy partner in the Postgraduate Department of Management Studies headed by Dr M. R. Shollapur. Using SIT-MBA Centre as a base, DREAM:IN Tumkur became a reality. In the weeks prior to the DREAM:IN Journey, significant contacts were made across Tumkur and in the 9 other taluks that make up the district. The contacts included persons from the Tumkur Management Association, Tumkur District Chambers of Commerce and Industry, faculty in several colleges teaching engineering and management, businessmen, students, doctors, government officials, NGOs like BAIF, etc. Awareness was spread about the DREAM:IN Tumkur project across many layers of society and help began coming in from friends in Tumkur – the hostel where the students would be put up, transportation, specific contacts in the taluks to enable ease of Dreamcatching on the journey, pointers from influencers in the district, etc. The base was thus laid for a successful Dream Journey, two Dreamscaping sessions and the concluding DREAM:IN Tumkur Conclave. The SIT MBA Department provided the DREAM:IN Tumkur project with their auditorium for the DREAM:IN Conclave.

TUMKUR DISTRICT

Tumkur district is an administrative, progressive district in the state of Karnataka in south India. The district headquarters are located at Tumkur. The district occupies an area of 10,598 km² and had a population of 2,584,711, of which 19.62% were urban as of 2001. It is a one and a half hour drive from Bangalore, the capital of Karnataka.

It consists chiefly of elevated land intersected by river valleys. A range of hills rising to nearly 4,000 feet (1,200 m) crosses it from north to south, forming the watershed between the systems of the Krishna and the Kaveri. The principal streams are the Jayamangala and the Shimsha. The mineral wealth of Tumkur is considerable; iron is obtained in large quantities from the hillsides; and excellent building-stone is quarried. The slopes of the Devarayanadurga hills are clothed with forests. Wildlife such as leopards, bears and wild boar have been recorded here. The annual rainfall averages 39 inches.

Tumkur is a district that depends on agriculture as its primary source of income. There is a lot of agricultural activity in all the 10 taluks of the district. Apart from agriculture, Tumkur is home to hordes of small and middle scale hardware industries.

The Siddaganga Math is a famous centre for pilgrimage. Siddhaganga has a temple dedicated to Siddhalingeshwara on a hillrock which is held in high esteem by devotees. At the entrance of this temple six shrines can be seen. Near this temple, amidst scenic surroundings, stands a Veerashaiva Math. The Math feeds thousands of students and pilgrims daily. This is one of the important educational centres. There are several esteemed (primary and higher) educational institutions across the district, some of which are run by the Math.

According to the 2011 census Tumkur district has a population of 2,681,449, roughly equal to the nation of Kuwait or the US state of Nevada. This gives it a ranking of 149th in India (out of a total of 640). The district has a population density of 253 inhabitants per square kilometre (660 /sq mi). Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 3.74 %. Tumkur has a sex ratio of 979 females for every 1000 males, and a literacy rate of 74.32%

The DREAM:IN Journey across Tumkur district was undertaken by 13 students of NICC from May 18 to May 27. They traversed the 10 taluks of the district – Tumkur, Tiptur, Koratagere, Madhugiri, Pavagada, Sira, Chikkanaykanahalli, Gubbi, Turuvukere and Kunigal – doing a taluk a day to capture 800 dreams from across all sections of society.

Only three students knew Kannada and they, along with Kannada-speaking facilitators from DREAM:IN or local contacts, enabled the harvesting of this large number of dreams. The students were accompanied by DREAM:IN facilitators, for the duration of the journey.

The students found simple accommodation at the Bapuji Hostel in Tumkur which follows the Gandhian principles of service and simplicity. They would travel out each day to one of the taluks, catch dreams and return to the hostel in the evening. The dreams for the day would be compiled and some of them edited in the hostel itself where an editing suite was set up.

The Dream Journey was an experience that opened up the students to the use of field research and ethnographic tools from a design-driven perspective. The students worked as four teams – Agni, Jala, Vayu and Bhoomi. They understood collaborative ways of team-work and gained in confidence and life-skills apart from coming into close contact with grassroots people and their dreams. 80 per cent of Tumkur’s population is engaged in agriculture and face the persistent problem of drought, poor infrastructure and overall neglect. Capturing the dreams of these people opened the understanding of the students to Indian realities they would never have touched in their urban surroundings.

Dreamscaping is that part of the DREAM:IN methodology whereby design thinkers, policymakers, business and thought leaders, social workers, entrepreneurs, educationists and students absorb dreams in intense dream-viewing sessions, discuss and brainstorm on core idea-clusters for social and business ventures identified in the dreams and draw up scenarios for such ventures using powerful analytical and visual techniques. The Dreamscaping session is multi-disciplinary, collaborative and criss-crosses the ley lines of corporate business, investment, communication, management, social enterprise, art, design, architecture, urban planning, science, education and government.

With the Dream Journey over and 800 dreams harvested from Tumkur, the urgent task was to edit and subtitle as many of these as possible in four days – May 28-31 – for absorption in the Dreamscaping sessions scheduled for the 1st and 2nd June at the DREAM:IN Centre, Idiom Design, Bangalore. Overall, 150 dreams were edited, subtitled and compiled as Dream Capsules for viewing, absorption, discussion, brainstorming and scenario-building by the seven multi-disciplinary teams created for the Dreamscaping session on 1st June.

The 60 Dreamscapers gathered together were involved in three half-hour viewing sessions to absorb and sift through the harvested dreams. The Dream Capsules were differentiated as Tumkur 1.0 (dreams pertaining to basic needs, fears, anxieties), Tumkur 1.5 (dreams pertaining to making better what already existed in varying degrees in Tumkur) and Tumkur 2.0 (dreams that looked to the future of Tumkur). These sessions were punctuated by short trigger-talks by Mr Balachandran Warrier of Manipal Foundation, Suman Ramachandra and Murali of the Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement, Praveen Dwivedi of Future Group, Dr M R Shollapur, Director of the post-graudate MBA department of SIT, Tumkur and Alexandra Rose, Dean of Students of NICC.

After absorbing the dreams, the teams set down to the task of visualising, ideating and future-casting the potential for Dream Ventures that could come alive and be realised, when fleshed out and detailed, in Tumkur. The teams were channelling the dreams into big, inclusive ideas and transformative enterprises that could be realized as drivers of big change. The scenarios that emerged by the end of the 10-hour session pertained to projects and ventures in the sectors of education, agriculture, water, youth, farm festival and farmer’s market, wellness and ecotourism. Each team presented its scenarios

On the second day of Dreamscaping, the seven teams were reshuffled into four and the tougher task of incorporating the ideas into one overarching, composite metaphor began apace. By the end of the day’s session, the central character in the scenarios was identified as the future Agripreneur of Tumkur. All other systems and products imagined would revolve around this character. The central metaphorical image became the coconut palm tree, projected as Tumkur’s New Tree of Life. It’s roots were identified as water (Tumkur is a water-scarce region) and capital. It’s trunk consists of three strands; the central, thicker strand being Agriculture woven in with the other two strands of Education and Culture. The central metaphor suggests that “Money grows on Trees”, that Tumkur is an “oasis of opportunity” where every problem can be turned into an opportunity.

The fruits of this Tree of New Life consist of the Agripreneur being located and projected as the modern entrepreneur to make Tumkur a Dream District and towards this end Tumkur has to be re-created as an Agri-Edu Hub with a new school for rural action and management directly linked to farmers, their dreams and moving them forward from their present role as raw materials producers to that of value-adding agri-processors.

The DREAM:IN Tumkur conclave was a gathering of leaders, designers, academicians, business professionals and students that came together for a day long session at the SIT MBA auditorium in Tumkur. The aim of the conclave was to formally introduce DREAM:IN Tumkur to the people of Tumkur and to share the ideas that were developed at the DreamScaping session with the people of Tumkur. The participants came together to absorb the dreams harvested from the 10 taluks of Tumkur district and discuss the Dreamscapes developed. Also to determine the steps needed to realize them as social and business enterprises. The objective was to share the ideas as open source, to seed the change process and to give shape to four or five sustainable ventures that could be taken forward as fast as possible.

The Day began at 9:30 in the morning, with all the participants sharing their dream on the Dream Tree placed at the entrance. Mrs Arundhati Nag, our special big dreamer welcomed everyone present. There were over 150 people in the auditorium. Dr. M. R. Shollapur, Director of PGDMS, SIT then gave the welcome address on behalf of SIT, Tumkur which was followed by the lighting of the lamp by all the dignitaries present. Following this, Prof. Basavarajaiah, Dean (Planning & Development), Director of SIT and Dr. Shivakumaraiah, Principal, SIT each spoke about their dreams for Tumkur and what they hoped this Conclave could achieve. Sonia and Carlos spoke about DREAM:IN and its vision for Tumkur while Mr. Balachandran Warrier spoke about Manipal Foundation and why they were partnering on this project.

Shortly after tea, Avy and Rahul spoke specifically about DREAM:IN Tumkur and introduced the Global Academic Program and the students from NICC that undertook the DREAM:IN Journey. The next session was a video session where the Journey and the DreamScaping Films were shared. Sonia then presented the DreamScapes that were developed at the DreamScaping session, explaining each of the 8 solutions before the group broke for lunch.

DREAM:IN Tumkur Panel Discussion

The Panel primarily discussed ideas on Farm Lab, The Water corporation Venture, Agri-preneurship and the Agriculture educational course at SIT. Various points were discussed, questions were answered and Dr. Shollapur even offered to kickstart the ‘REALISE’ campaign with the Agri-preneuship course at Tumkur.

The Panel Discussion was kicked off by Prof. Carlos Teixeira, who said that this was a great initiative, the work done so far was impressive and a plan to kickstart activities on ground, needs to come in to play in the next two weeks. Dr. Shollapur then (on behalf of the MBA department of SIT) offered to partner in the area of ‘agri-preneurship’ stating the following points –

• SIT already has experts in entrepreneurship

• Their business management background makes it easy for them to enter farm-management\

• They would like to partner with DREAM:IN on the Agripreneurship course

• The courses could cover –

Farm Management

Agricultural technology

Agricultural industrial systems

Agricultural entrepreneurship (Agripreneurship)

• The Siddaganga Math could also be a potential partner on this

• SIT is autonomous and their curriculum is flexible

• This course could possibly start on an experimental basis, take up a few villages, see results, inculcate the learnings and then structure this as an academic course

• SIT could also possibly set up it’s own (or partner with the Math, since they have a lot of spare land) farm lab

• 2nd Generation Farmers could be ideal candidates to take up this course

Praveen Dwivedi then addressed the fact that this initiative needed to go beyond education. A plan needed to be formulated to reach all the various stakeholders in society. He also said that every societal aspect needed to be addressed and seen. That DREAM:IN Tumkur needed to create, communicate and capture these various stakeholders. Questions like – what product/service can we create? What is the fastes, most efficient product? How do we design it? Where will the impact be the fastest? Were all put forth to the panel and audience by Mr. Dwivedi.

Prof. V.V. Mani then stated that there is a growing need for a new education system. He spoke of SIT unsuccessfully trying to start an incubation cell, asking, How can we build the bridge between the ideas we have and implementing them? Sonia Manchanda then added to this point by asking if everyone present could commit to making 5 examples work, in the span of one year (also stating that it takes 1 year to demonstrate a successful start up)

Prof. Carlos Teixeira then proposed the following –

• Get some farm land

• Test several ideas

• Re-design supply chain

• Re-structure the local economy

• Develop systems

All this for a very specific product/crop like rice or coconut. New Techniques like smart farming can be utilised and this can be developed in to a farm lab with 5 students (that are carefully selected and recruited) to run this lad. In a year’s time, this can serve as an answer and a tester for a variety of causes like women’s empowerment, microfinance, fair trade etc.

Mrs. Arundhati Nag added that one year might be too short to run this, that it has to go on for a longer time. Major stakeholders like the DC of Tumkur and other government officials need to be involved as they can bring about change on a larger scale.

By the end of the panel discussion, everyone had agreed that this was only the first step in working towards transforming Tumkur in to a Dream District and subsequent steps were necessary to take these projects and ideas forward.

An optimistic yet lucid demonstration that dreams can be captured and converted into reality. A unique exploration within the world of dreams. Launched in India... Spreading throughout the world.

DREAM:IN has emerged as a radical and innovative Design Thinking methodology for bottom-up, inside-out innovation designed to take away fears and anxieties and liberate the imagination, creating positive change. A system that aims to shift the focus from needs to dreams, DREAM:IN creates tangible new value and new meaning for policy, society, economy and nations.

In January 2011, between Bangalore and New York with Sao Paulo involved in between, DREAM:IN was launched as a design system for emerging nations to focus the attention of policy, enterprise and the social sector on the dreams of all people equally. To shift attention away from making products smaller to making aspirations bigger, to launch a creative and positive stream of thought and meaning and to demonstrate that the idea of equal futures can actually be realized with skill, speed and people’s imagination.

It should come as no surprise that the system was developed and prototyped in one of the oldest and at the same time, the youngest democracy in the world and is already being acknowledged by and showing huge potential for the rest of the world. The DREAM:IN System brings together academics and practice, the private and social sectors, the privileged and the not so privileged. To create unique ideas, new value and new meaning.

Students, academics and educational institutions were integrated into the structure of the DREAM:IN project from its beginning. The first DREAM:IN Journey/Conclave of January-February 2011 involved 101 students drawn from 19 institutions across India.

Inevitably, DREAM:IN, as a methodology, was crafted into a global academic program depending on the intensity with which the program is engaged with. The program takes an inter-disciplinary approach that combines and cuts across the boundaries of ethnography, psychology, business and design thinking processes and methodologies

The initiative to turn DREAM:IN into a global academic program was taken by Dr Carlos Texeira at the School of Design Strategies, Parsons, New York. Parsons students set up a DREAM:IN chapter and two courses were launched. This was followed by six universities in Brazil deciding to implement the global academic program.

As a global academic program, students now have the opportunity to network across continents and access a cutting-edge academic curriculum, resource-persons and resource materials put together across India, six universities in Brazil and Parsons, New York. The program is flexible and customisable to meet the requirements of academic rigor and practice in each local region and university. It can be deployed at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Each university has the flexibility to decide on the duration of the course, the credits, time devoted to executing the methodology in the field/region, and the mix of academic inputs that complement the methodology.

It was sheer chance- nay Destiny that brought Manipal Foundation and Idiom face to face. A chance meeting with Sonia in Ranjan Pai’s office lead to our visiting Idiom’s office and it was Love at first sight with the place, the work they do and of course the people who inhabit the Dream of a building!

Once I got a glimpse of what DREAM:IN was all about, I was hooked line and sinker!! From thereon, it was just a matter of establishing the right connectivity for ensuring that Social causes are addressed which can be supported by Manipal Foundation resulting in a MOU with IDIOM ,linked to the DREAM:IN project.

Even the choice of Tumkur came out of Manipal Foundation’s close connectivity and project funding for Education in Tumkur.

No looking back now, it is Full Steam Ahead for this DREAM BOAT.

BALA WARRIER CEO, MANIPAL FOUNDATION

The DREAM:IN Global Academic Program in Bangalore telescoped into the DREAM:IN Tumkur project with Manipal Foundation coming in as a key partner. While scoping out a number of possible regions where DREAM:IN could be implemented, Mr Balachandran Warrier, CEO of Manipal Foundation, suggested that Tumkur would be an ideal district to map. The Dream Journey could be undertaken through the 10 taluks of Tumkur district which has strategic potential for 360 degree development because of its proximity to Bangalore. It would be a good beginning to map the district and identify potential social and business ventures.

Manipal Foundation was willing to fund the Dream Journey, Dreamscaping and DREAM:IN Tumkur Conclave. And, because Manipal Foundation already had some social work going on in Tumkur district especially in education and there is a Manipal Hospital in Tumkur, contacts would be in place for the NICC students to more easily undertake the Dream Journey. The primary contact that Manipal Foundation provided in Tumkur was with the Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement

Manipal Foundation believed that the DREAM:IN methodology would enable the spotting and scoping of future social enterprises and ventures in Tumkur district which could be driven by people from Tumkur itself. The SVYM, already supported by Manipal Foundation, was also seeking to awaken and motivate Tumkur-ites to social enterprise and here the interests of DREAM:IN, Manipal Foundation and SVYM coincided to make for a strong partnership.

Manipal Foundation had no constraints to place on the organic design, flow and development of the DREAM:IN Global Academic Program or planning of the Dream Journey, Dreamscaping and DREAM:IN Tumkur Conclave. But its interest lay in gaining access to dreams of people in the areas of Education, Health Care, Livelihood Creation and Rural Women’s Empowerment. Further, through the TRAC student exchange program which Manipal Foundation has set up to provide support systems for foreign students and scholars to visit India and get involved with social enterprise projects, it would be possible for students from Parsons, the New School for Design (a DREAM:IN partner) to come and get involved in the DREAM:IN Tumkur project.

We are pleased to learn about DREAM:IN TUMKUR, a project and a Journey you are undertaking in Tumkur, a project which we understand is a prototype of a bottom up development model that could help give birth to many innovative initiatives. Do keep us posted on the results and we wish you and your team the very best in this initiative that you have undertaken voluntarily.

Sam Pitroda Adviser to Prime Minister Public Information Infrastructure and Innovations. Government of India

DREAM:In BELIEVERS

The National Innovation Council, under the chairmanship of Mr. Sam Pitroda, adviser to the PM on PIII was set up to discuss, analyse and help implement strategies for inclusive innovation in India and prepare a roadmap for innovation 2010-2020. After a successful journey and conclave in 2011, a plan for scaling up this model was taken to the National Innovation Council in New Delhi. Upon discussion of the plan with Mr. Pitroda and his team, the idea of implementing DREAM:IN on a district level came up. Quoting Mr. Pitroda, he said that there are several initiatives across the country that are boiling the water, creating ideas and plans, but no one to actually go forth and take them through to reality. If DREAM:IN were to successfully implement it’s model on a district level, show successes and implement solutions and ventures, then the National Innovation Council would fund and support similar projects being implemented across the rest of the 639 districts across India.

Taking this conversation forward, the plan to run a DREAM:IN district project came up.

Following the conclave, a Plan to take these ideas and projects forward was formed. Currently, these projects are being developed, DREAM:IN is partnering with various champions from Tumkur, people are being enrolled, funds being raised and other plans are being made to fully REALISE the ideas that were developed during the DreamScaping session. A plan to create prototypes of some of these ideas has already been made and is currently underway.
