DELGADOS CHASE DERBYDREAM WITH LATE-

BLOOMING CARACARO

By Mike Kane

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - This summer, the road to Churchill

Downs runs through upstate New York and has brought

Caracaro (Uncle Mo) from South Florida for the historic

GI Runhappy Travers S. Saturday.

Though the Travers is often the late-August goal for the

owners and trainers of talented 3-year-olds, the COVID-19

pandemic has produced a serious rewrite of the schedule for

elite races and briefly changed its status. Long ago dubbed the

"Midsummer Derby," the 2020 Travers at Saratoga Race Course

is a stepping stone to the GI Kentucky Derby Sept. 5.

In their quest for Derby points, trainer Gustavo Delgado and

his son and assistant Gustavo Delgado, Jr. shipped lightly raced

Caracaro to Saratoga Race Course last month. Caracaro earned

20 points with his narrow second-place finish to Country

Grammer (Tonalist) in the GIII Peter Pan S. on opening day,

July 16. Those Peter Pan points have him in 25th place, close,

but still outside the safety zone to secure one of the 20 berths.

The Travers, with 100-40-20-10 points available, is their last

chance.

"We're thinking about qualifying for the Derby," Delgado, Jr.

said. "If he runs in the top three and he comes out good,

hopefully we will make the Derby. Cont. p3

Gustavo Delgado, Jr. | Mike Kane

Caracaro/Delgado cont. from p1

Caracaro is making his fourth career start for co-owners Global

Thoroughbred and Top Racing and drew post seven in the

eight-horse Travers. He will be ridden by Javier Castellano, who

holds a record six victories in this event.

Delgado, a hugely successful trainer in his native Venezuela,

laughed as he said that the colt--who was injured after his

maiden victory Jan. 11 and had six months between starts this

year--might make it to the Derby after all.

"Right now, with the pandemic there is a chance," he said. "If

there is no pandemic there is no chance."

Delgado, Jr. stepped in and translated the rest of his father's

words: "I would say that the only good thing about the virus is

that we have a shot in the Derby again."

If Caracaro delivers a big performance in the 151st Travers, he

would take the Delgados to their third Derby. Since emigrating

from Venezuela in 2014 and opening a stable in Florida, they

have had Majesto (Tiznow), 18th in 2016, and Bodexpress

(Bodemeister), 13th last year. Delgado, Jr. said they did

everything to get to Louisville with Majesto and Bodexpress.

"There is no comparison to this horse," Delgado Jr. said. "This

horse is way more talented than the last two."

Caracaro showed that ability in his six-length win in the

one-mile maiden score at Gulfstream, the second start of his

career. The performance made him a Derby prospect and Rafael

Celis of Global Thoroughbreds and his partner Lucas Noriego,

who competes as Top Racing, had offers to buy the colt. During

the vetting process, he was found to have a bone issue in is hind

end that scuttled the sale. Caracaro did not need surgery, but

required a three-month layoff.

"After the maiden race, there was a big group interested,"

Delgado, Jr. said. "When we were doing the X-ray for the sale,

that's when he found out he had that. We did the right thing and

gave him time. Our guess is that he was running with that

problem before. He always showed something behind, nothing

major, but that's when we found out. Then we did the right

thing and gave him time. We always considered him a good

horse."

Caracaro stayed with the Delgados at Gulstream Park West

and returned to light training after his three-month hiatus. He

had five breezes before making the trek to Saratoga to try to

earn his way into the Derby. He moved to the lead of the Peter

Pan in the stretch, but was collared by Country Grammer and

lost by a neck. Delgado said he would have skipped the Travers

if Caracaro had won the 1 1/8 miles Peter Pan and earned 50

points.

"We would go seven weeks [to the Kentucky Derby] not three

weeks [to the Travers]," he said. "Seven weeks is very good. For

the horse. For me. Every owner in the world likes to get to the

Kentucky Derby."

Delgado, Jr. picked up the translation for his father: "Normally,

we would like to have more time between races, but right now

we don't have any more options." Cont. p4

Cazadero winning the Bashford Manor | Coady

After the Peter Pan, Celis and Noriega--who also are partners

in Bodexpress--heard from interested buyers, but they have

retained ownership.

This weekend Caracaro will try again in the Travers, first run in

1864 and the marquee event of the Saratoga season. It was

moved ahead a few weeks from its usual spot in late August to

make it a Derby prep. This will be the earliest running of the

race since 1916.

"We are here. The horse really likes the track," Delgado, Jr.

said. "He ran second and he ran a helluva race. The Travers is

close to the Derby, but it will be hard for us telling the owners

we don't want to run in the Travers. Javier Castellano is open for

us and the horse is doing good. So, a lot is going on from the

owner's standpoint. Everybody wants to try. If you have the

horse now. It's not like you are going to save time and see and

then something happens after. You have the horse now and the

horse is doing good now."

Though his work tab shows two breezes since the Peter Pan,

Delgado said he really could not work Caracaro between races.

"Everything is good. No problem," he said. "He has only been

galloping because he only had three weeks. It was six months,

no races. Now it's very difficult. We considered only galloping, to

the Travers. It's possible that we have good luck."

The Delgados said they think the mile and a quarter distance of

the Travers will suit their colt.

"The horse is going to be relaxed, he's going to be on his own

gallop," Delgado, Jr. said. "We will feel better in the 10 furlongs.

The 10 furlongs will be even better for our horse, that's what we

think. He's a galloper. You can tell the way he strides he covers a

lot of ground. We think he can go even better in the 10 furlongs

than in a mile or a mile and an eighth."

Saratoga Special cont. from p1

"It=s nice to have a couple of races under his belt heading into

a race like this at Saratoga," said Asmussen's chief assistant

Scott Blasi. "He came in very well-respected and hasn't done

anything wrong yet."

First-call rider Ricardo Santana, Jr. retains the mount on

Cazadero, while Joel Rosario takes the call on Jackie=s Warrior

(Maclean=s Music), a 2 1/2-length maiden winner at first asking

in Louisville June 19. Second on that occasion was

Therideofalifetime (Candy Ride {Arg}), who franked the form of

the winner when swooshing home to graduate by 8 1/4 lengths

at Keeneland July 11, good for the >Rising Star= nod. Jose Ortiz,

aboard in Lexington, is at the controls again Friday. Cont. p5

AT OUTSIDE IN, OTTBS BRING NEEDED JOYby Diana Pikulski

Jennifer McVoy is a Licensed Master Social Worker and the

founder of Out Side In, located in Grand Marsh, MI, who grew

up riding and showing Arabians. Her first educational degree

was in business and she began her work life in the corporate

world, but, early on, she decided that it wasn't for her and went

back to school to earn her Master's Degree in Social Work. For

15 years, she practiced traditional therapy in a public-school

setting and was always aware that horses could make a

difference for people in need. Just over 10 years ago, she made

her first foray into equine-assisted work. The enhancement to

her traditional practice was so profound that she expanded and

brought in a second horse, an off-track Thoroughbred that she

found in a classified ad. McVoy's practice took off, so she

purchased a 25-acre farm, has incorporated an average of 18-22

OTTBs at a time, and has become a Thoroughbred Aftercare

Alliance-accredited aftercare organization.

The mission at Out Side In is threefold. The organization

focuses on providing psychotherapy, a unique 12-week program

for veterans, and Thoroughbred aftercare. The majority of the

clients participating in psychotherapy and the veterans= program

are severe trauma victims with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Many have attempted suicide or have had suicide ideation.

Many clients are referred to Out Side In because they are

considered treatment-resistant, meaning these women, men,

teens and children have refused treatment, or that other

therapies have failed for them.

"We take the hardest cases and we have success where other

therapists do not," said McVoy. "In many situations, I say just get

him or her here and if need be, I bring a horse to the car."

Out Side In employs six therapists and all have a deep

background in horses. On the first visit to Out Side In, the

therapist and client go into the pasture to meet the herd of

Thoroughbreds. To ease the client into the treatment process,

they ask questions related to the horses which bring out

answers about themselves and the issues they are facing.

Inevitably, one horse will be especially interested and pick that

person.

"We don't really know why one horse connects with a certain

person," said McVoy. "All it takes is that one moment when the

horse comes over and chooses the client. In that bonding

moment, the walls in the person just come down."

Over its almost 10 years of operation, Out Side In has grown

and become established in the community for its unique success

rate, serving 150 people per week. Because they practice

traditional psychotherapy, enhanced with the participation of

horses, client care is often covered by insurance and Medicaid

for uninsured or under-insured clients. With the help of local

supporters, Out Side In grew from one pasture with a

port-a-potty to a state-of-the-art facility with a more-than

20,000-square foot indoor arena, six treatment rooms, a waiting

room, and 16 stalls. Thoroughbreds are the only horses helping

with therapy.

"After nine years, the Thoroughbreds still amaze me every

day," said McVoy. "I will only do this work with Thoroughbreds.

They are intelligent, perceptive and they love to be with people.

Especially with the difficult cases we handle, there is so much to

work with."

The veterans program, Heroes for Horses, pairs three veterans

at a time each with a horse, recently off the track, for 12 weeks.

Together, they work through their many common experiences.

"Just like veterans, foster kids, survivors of abuse and trauma,

and all people, racehorses have life experiences that shape their

personalities and how they interact with others," said McVoy.

"We can watch the herd and talk about how the horses adapt to

their circumstances, like being moved from one home to

another and having to become part of a new herd or family."

Often previously treatment-resistant veterans will ask to stay

and volunteer to help other horses when their 12-week program

has ended. One such veteran suffered from severe PTSD and

had tried therapy at the VA that was not successful. He wife

pressed him for three years to visit Out Side In. Finally, when she

gave him an ultimatum, he agreed. Cont. p8

"He bonded early on with one mare, Theteflonwarrior

(Killenaule), and completed the program," said McVoy. "He lives

close by and he still comes and helps early in the morning before

we open. He even had a picture of the mare and our logo

tattooed on his neck. He said she saved his life."

Out Side In retrains and adopts out two to three OTTBs a year

to make room for new rescues. Esla Mambo (Black Mambo), the

second OTTB to enter Out Side In, came through CANTER. He

ended his racing career with 38 starts and close to $50,000 in

earnings at Hawthorne Race Course. He is the herd leader and

the calm quiet type--often the gateway horse to ease the initial

fears of new clients.

"Esla Mambo is our go-to horse when people are nervous

about horses," said McVoy. "It's funny because he is the biggest

horse but he is a gentle herd leader and we can trust him

around everyone."

"We have a wonderful therapy client who my daughter is now

teaching to ride on Esla. It was always her dream to learn to

ride. She is 82. She started therapy with us when she lost her

husband a few years ago."

Out Side In serves many children and teens who have been

abused and are now in the foster care system.

"I just did an intake of two children who witnessed their father

shoot their mother in the head," said McVoy. "She survived and

brought them to us. For them and for many others, being with

the horses becomes the only good experience in their life."

"So many kids have done nothing wrong and no good situation

exists for them in their home or in being removed from their

home. At Out Side In, in spite of everything, they can have an

hour of happiness. I always let them sit on a horse and then a

NYRA STATEMENT ON NY TRAVEL

ADVISORY In advance of Runhappy Travers Day Saturday, Aug. 8, NYRA

communications director Pat McKenna issued the following

statement to address questions regarding the New York Travel

Advisory and its impact on horse owners seeking to travel to

Saratoga.

To align with required health and safety measures

implemented in New York by Governor Andrew Cuomo to

mitigate risk and combat the spread of COVID-19, horse owners

planning travel to New York from any of the states currently

listed on the New York Travel Advisory are required to complete

a mandatory 14-day quarantine upon arrival in New York prior

to seeking access to Saratoga Race Course.

Owners should be advised that New York state provides no

exceptions for those pursuing non-essential travel from states

listed on the travel advisory, and a negative COVID-19 diagnostic

test does not waive the 14-day quarantine requirement.

There are currently 35 states/territories listed under the travel

advisory including the prominent horse racing regions of

Kentucky, California, Florida, Maryland, Texas, Virginia and

South Carolina. Owners from these 35 states/territories who

have completed the mandatory 14-day quarantine, as well as

owners from any state not currently listed on the travel

advisory, will continue to be permitted at Saratoga Race Course

on the day that their horse is entered to run with prior NYRA

approval.

Owners are subject to a mandatory temperature check before

entering the property and are required to practice social

distancing and to wear a facial covering at all times while at

Saratoga Race Course. These measures are actively enforced by

NYRA security and the NYRA safety stewards.

For additional information on the travel advisory, click here.

Kaleem Shah and Vittorio at OBS | Photos by Z

SECOND CHANCES: VITTORIOby Steve Sherack

In this continuing series, TDN=s Senior Editor Steve Sherack

catches up with the connections of promising maidens to keep

on your radar.

Vittorio (c, 2, Ghostzapper--Roberta Turner, by Smart Strike), a

$750,000 OBS Spring purchase by Kaleem Shah, has every right

to build off a better-than-it-looked debut fifth going five furlongs

at Del Mar Aug. 1 (video).

Off to a tardy beginning after breaking inward at the start, the

4-1 chance, equipped with blinkers, was slow into stride and

trailed the field in ninth through an opening quarter in :23.28.

He began to make a flashy, sweeping move while four/five wide

on the far turn beneath Mike Smith as Freedom Fighter

(Violence) led with Dixie=s Two Stents (Quality Road) in hot

pursuit in second.

Into fifth and looking a potential danger as they turned for

home despite the slow start and wide trip, Vittorio raced a bit

greenly from there hanging on his left lead and lugging in some

as the top two ran away from the field with Freedom Fighter

digging down gamely for a head victory. It was another

5 1/4 lengths back to Petruchio (Into Mischief) in third, who

chased the top two throughout in a race in which the speed held

together very well.

Vittorio, 8 1/4 lengths adrift of the winner, earned a 53 Beyer

Speed Figure for the effort. He is trained by Simon Callaghan.

AHe got left behind at the start and lost all chance,@ Shah said.

AMike Smith liked the horse, and with more gate works in him,

he should be a different horse in his next start. Vittorio came out

of his race in good shape. He should improve with more distance

down the road.@

Vittorio, a $250,000 Keeneland September yearling graduate,

was the fifth most expensive purchase at this year=s postponed

Spring Sale in Ocala after breezing an eighth in a bullet :9 4/5

from the Sequel Bloodstock consignment. Bloodstock agent Ben

McElroy signed the ticket on behalf of Shah.

AThe good horses cost a lot of money for sure,@ Shah said. AI do

like the 2-year-old in training sales where most of my horse

racing success has come from and I had to stretch a lot to get

him--Bob Baffert was the underbidder. Simon Callaghan and Ben

McElroy liked this horse a lot at the sale.@

Bred in Kentucky by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings,

Vittorio is out of a half-sister to MSW & MGSP Foxy Danseur

(Mr. Greeley), the dam of graded stakes-winning >TDN Rising

Star= Ever So Clever (Medaglia d=Oro).

AVittorio means victorious in Italian,@ Shah concluded. AI sure

hope he is a winner of many prestigious races down the road.@

Previous standouts featured in >Second Chances= include: GI

Runhappy Santa Anita Derby winner Honor A. P. (Honor Code),

Royal Ascot G2 Norfolk S. runner-up Golden Pal (Uncle Mo),

MGISW and >TDN Rising Star= Paradise Woods (Union Rags),

GSW Backyard Heaven (Tizway), MSW and >TDN Rising Star=

Gidu (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) and GII Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth

S. runner-up Candy Tycoon (Twirling Candy).

Live Oak homebred TAPPINGINTOSUCCESS (Tapit) makes her

placed Slewfoundmoney (Seeking the Gold), the filly is a half-

sister to multiple graded stakes winning millionaire Awesome

Slew (Awesome Again), as well as to graded placed Souper Lucky

(Giant=s Causeway) and stakes winner He=s Bankable (Arch).

Leia Marie (Exaggerator) was the highest-priced filly from her

Classic-winning sire=s first crop when she sold for $400,000 at

last year=s Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale. Out of a full-sister to

graded stakes winner Harlem Rocker (Macho Uno), she makes

her first start here for George Bolton, Peter Leidel and Barry

Lipman and trainer Doug O=Neill. TJCIS PPs

Jolting Joe, who opened his career with four straight runner-up

efforts, finally got to the wire first while breaking his maiden in

the Cab Calloway division of the New York Stallion Series at

Saratoga Thursday. The gray colt, a half-brother to recent GII

Bernard Baruch S. winner Somelikeithotbrown (Big Brown),

settled off the pace as longshot Stuy Town Baby (Bellamy Road)

took the field through fractions of :25.19 and :49.24. Dream

Bigger (Mission Impazible) rolled up to challenge the pacesetting

filly at the head of the lane, but his advantage was short lived as

Jolting Joe kicked into gear. The favorited shrugged off a

challenge from Turbo Drive and sailed under the wire a

confident winner.

AWith a short run into the first turn, I was trying to be a bit

more forwardly placed, but we didn't get away the cleanest,@

said winning jockey Tyler Gaffalione. AI looked to my inside and

there were two going at it, so I figured I would just sit behind

them and let them do the dirty work.@

Jolting Joe | Sarah Andrew

Gaffalione continued, AHe was traveling nicely throughout, and

when I asked him for run at the top of the lane, he gave me an

extra punch. I still think there's more in the tank. We haven't

seen the best of him yet. Hopefully, he just keeps improving.@

Jolting Joe began his string of runner-up efforts at Kentucky

Downs last September. He shipped south to Florida for second-

place finishes at Gulfstream in the Sept. 28 Armed Forces S. and

behind GI Kentucky Derby contender King Guillermo (Uncle Mo)

in a maiden special weight at Gulfstream West Nov. 2. He

returned from eight months on the sidelines and missed by just

a head after setting the pace going 1 1/16 miles at Ellis Park last

time out July 25.

AThe horse ran a credible race at Ellis Park,@ trainer Mike

Maker said of the winner. AHe seems to find some tough

competition and he proved our high hopes for him today. Some

of the seconds we were disappointed with, but it turns out they

were some pretty live races.@

Marilyn Monroan produced a colt by Palace Malice in 2019

and a filly by Hard Spun this year. She was bred back to

Mendelssohn.

HUNGRY KITTEN (f, 4, Kitten=s Joy--Hungry Island {MGSW &

going 10 furlongs over the Belmont lawn in a July 9 allowance.

Sent off at 5-1, the chestnut filly was last throughout much of

this marathon contest. Still with everyone to catch after 1 1/4

miles, she unleashed a furious late rally to just get a neck in

front of Eliade (Fr) (Teofilo {Ire}) on the line. Two-time graded

stakes winner Hungry Island, a half-sister to graded stakes

winner Soaring Empire (Empire Maker), produced a colt by

Kitten=s Joy in 2020 and was bred back to American Pharoah.

PREMIER STAR (c, 3, Tapiture--Letthetigerparty, by Hold That

furlongs at Gulfstream Park last winter and was named a >TDN

Rising Star= for the latter effort Jan. 15, but finished a distant

sixth when stretched to 1 1/16 miles in the Feb. 8 GIII Sam F.

Davis S. in his final outing for Jorge Navarro. Off slowly in his

return, the chesntut colt came home fourth going six furlongs at

the early lead and was in control through an opening quarter in

:22.45. He extended his advantage turning for home, drawing

4 1/2 lengths in front after a half in :44.97 and was much the

best despite drifting out slightly late. Fortunate Friends (J P=s

(Curlin) in her 6 1/2-furlong debut at Churchill Downs last

September, resurfaced with a 2 1/4-length graduation going six

furlongs in Louisville June 27. The 3-5 favorite was part of a

three-way battle on the front end through fractions of :22.39

and :45.84. She began to inch away late before holding on for a

half-length win over late-closing Hoptown Honey (Roman Ruler).

Purrfectly Claire was a $250,000 KEESEP yearling. Magical

Belle is a full-sister to GI Breeders= Cup Distaff winner Unrivaled

Belle, dam of champion Unique Bella (Tapit). The mare

produced a colt by Frosted in 2019 and was bred to Twirling

GUARDIAN MOON (f, 2, Declaration of War--Elatha, by Malibu

Moon) recorded a professional 1 1/4-length debut victory over

the Saratoga lawn Thursday. The 7-5 favorite pressed the pace

through an opening quarter in :22.27. The bay filly stuck her

head in front at the top of the stretch and was clear through a

quarter in :45.98. She turned back a mild challenge from Herald

Angel (Exaggerator) late to win with authority.

Guardian Moon is the first foal out of Elatha, who was bred to

champion Gun Runner this spring. The mare also has a yearling

filly by First Samurai. The winner=s third dam is Misty Dancer

ISOLATE (c, 2, Mark Valeski--Tranquil Song, by Unbridled's

Song), bet down to 3-1 from a 15-1 morning line, was jostled at

the break, but recovered to angle over to the rail and raced

keenly just off the early leaders. The bay colt attempted to rush

up through a narrow opening on the rail leaving the backstretch,

but was shut off and shuffled back. He angled out five wide for

the stretch run, only to dart back to the inside and found a seam

to run through, charging to the lead with a furlong to run and

holding off Boomer (Gone Astray) to win by 3/4 lengths.

The winner was a $70,000 KEENOV weanling. Tranquil Song, a

daughter of multiple graded placed Travelator (A. P Jet),

produced a filly by Cloud Computing this spring and was bred

back to Enticed. Beth Bayer purchased the mare for $2,000 at

CARIMBA (f, 2, Kantharos--Star of Gallantry, by Warrior's

6-5 choice in this unveiling. The chestnut filly was bumped at the

break, but was undaunted, zipping out to the early lead. She

extended her advantage into the far turn and was never

challenged while romping home an 8 1/2-length winner.

Verrazanointhesky (Verrazano) was second.

AShe did everything good,@ jockey DeShawn Parker said of the

winner. AShe broke out good and handled the turf like a

professional. She will be really tough moving forward. I didn=t

get any instructions on riding her, just got a leg up. But I always

know everything from Wesley [Ward] is fast. She got out of the

gate and just carried on from there.@

Carimba was a $155,000 KEENOV weanling purchase. Star of

Gallantry, in foal to Brody=s Cause, sold for $50,000 at the 2018

Keeneland November sale. Her Brody=s Cause colt sold for

Military Style just lasts | Racingfotos.com

IN TDN AMERICA TODAYDELGADO DERBY DREAMING WITH CARACARO Caracaro (Uncle Mo) will contest the GI Runhappy Travers S. at

Saratoga on Saturday. Mike Kane checks in with trainer Gustavo

Delgado and his son and assistant Gustavo Delgado, Jr. Caracaro

arrived at Saratoga last month and ran second in the GIII Peter

Pan S. to Country Grammer (Tonalist). Click or tap here to go

TYROS IN FAMILIAR STYLE

Thursday=s G3 Japan Racing Association Tyros S. lost a

potential major player after Jessie Harrington deemed the

ground too fast for the likely favourite Cadillac (Ire) (Lope de

Vega {Ire}) and with the surface slick at Leopardstown it was a

front-runner who prevailed in Military Style (War Front). This

year more than any other it seems that the Foxrock venue is

favouring those on the front end when the going is riding as it

was here, but such is the blueblooded nature of the winner it is

dangerous to argue that he will not turn out ultimately the best.

As he clung on by a neck from his deeply promising stablemate

Van Gogh (American Pharoah), the son of the 2014 G1 Fillies=

Mile heroine Together Forever (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) who is in turn

a full-sister to the G1 Epsom Oaks heroine Forever Together

(Ire), brought up a 14th edition for Aidan O=Brien. Not given an

easy time under Emmet McNamara, the 7-1 shot saw off all-

comers for a game score as the 4-1 favourite Masen (GB)

(Kingman {GB}) made it a tight finale just half a length away.

Military Style, who had beaten the subsequently listed-placed

Eastern Voice (Ire) (Vocalised) on debut over six furlongs at Naas

June 20 before looking in need of this extra furlong when third

in the G3 Marble Hill S. at Cork July 5, was not surprising those

closest to him.

AIt was a very good run first time and they usually improve

plenty for their first start, then he was beaten only a length in

the Marble Hill so he was entitled to have a chance,@ McNamara

said of War Front=s 50th graded/group winner. Cont. p2

TATTERSALLS IRELAND SEPTEMBER

YEARLING CATALOGUE OUT A total of 447 yearlings are scheduled to go under the hammer

during Part I of the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale,

with 183 lots making up Part II, the sales company announced

on Thursday. Slated for Sept. 21-23, the catalogue is now

available online. Notable graduates include MGSW Rose of

Kildare (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}), G3 Albany S. heroine Dandalla

(Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) and G2 Airlie Stud S. winner Aloha Star

(Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}). All horses catalogued for the

sale are eligible for the €300,000 Tattersalls Ireland Super

Auction Sales Race in 2021.

A Divine Prophet (Aus) half-sister to Dandalla (lot 83) will be

offered by Newtownbarry House Stud; while a Mastercraftsman

(Ire) half-brother to Aloha Star (lot 4) is consigned by

Collegelands Stud.

G3 Tyros S. Cont. from p1

The jockey added, AHe=s improved for the step up to seven and

it=s beautiful fast racing ground which suited him. The plan was

to go forward and if I found him in front to go on, as he had the

experience and we went a good even pace. He toughed it out

well and is very genuine. He=s not short of pace, but a mile

shouldn=t be a problem as he relaxes.@

Pedigree Notes Together Forever is making a fast impact at Coolmore, with

this breakthrough second foal following the Listed

Leopardstown 2000 Guineas Trial runner-up King of Athens also

by War Front. Sent back to him again to produce another colt in

2019, she has since visited Justify twice and has thrown a colt

this year. The aforementioned Forever Together captured the

Oaks two years ago and her and the dam are half-sisters to the

sire Lord Shanakill (Speightstown) who captured the G1 Prix

Jean Prat, G2 Lennox S. and G2 Mill Reef S., and full-sisters to

the listed-placed i3.2million 2018 Goffs Orby-topping Do You

Love Me (Ire). The third dam is the influential Chain Fern

(Blushing Groom {Fr}), an unraced full-sister to the G1 Irish 1000

Guineas heroine and broodmare supreme Al Bahathri. With his

pedigree, Military Style could be one to reap dividends across

the Atlantic as a relative of the GI Yellow Ribbon S. winner

Spanish Fern (El Gran Senor) and GI Santa Anita H. hero

Heatseeker (Ire) (Giant=s Causeway).

SHALE DOMINATES ANOTHER O=BRIEN SHOW Donnacha O=Brien=s instant momentum showed no sign of

stopping on Thursday as the sole Galileo (Ire) in the G3 Frank

Conroy Silver Flash S. line-up Shale (Ire) flew the flag for the

newest of the family=s prodigies at Leopardstown. Having won a

mile maiden on slow ground at Gowran Park July 8, the

daughter of the runaway G1 1000 Guineas heroine Homecoming

Queen (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) was positioned in a

clear second early by under up-and-coming riding star Gavin

Ryan. Sent past the weakening race animator Finest (Ire) (The

Gurkha {Ire}) approaching the furlong pole, the

generously-priced 14-1 shot had first run on TDN Rising Star

Pretty Gorgeous (Fr) (Lawman {Fr}), and, with stamina assured,

galloped relentlessly to record a 1 1/2-length success. That 2-1

favourite was completing a forecast for the O=Brien brothers

Donnacha and Joseph, with A Ma Chere (Ire) (Kodiac {GB})

finishing well adrift 3 1/2 lengths back in third.

AShe=s a lovely filly and I=m very grateful that connections let

me keep the ride,@ commented Ryan, the Co. Tipperary-born

five-pound claimer. AShe had won her maiden nicely on slow

ground and our only worry was the quicker ground today, but

she=s a very versatile filly with a lot of class. She travelled into

the race well and stayed on gamely. Donnacha said to make sure

we were up and forward, as she has a wicked high cruising

speed and she=s probably a miler ideally. I think that was a good

race and I know Joseph thinks his is a classy filly.@

Joseph said of the runner-up, AIt was a fantastic run and the

first two pulled clear--I suppose something like the Debutante

makes sense.@

Shale, who was sixth on debut in the course-and-distance

maiden in which the subsequent G3 Marble Hill S. winner

Minaun (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) was second June 21, had taken her

Gowran maiden by 3 1/4 lengths last time and is a filly with

limitless potential given her outstanding pedigree.

Donnacha was on hand to say, AShe had improved plenty from

her maiden and her work was good--the race worked out nicely,

as they went a good gallop and she got a nice tow into it. To look

at her, you would say she wants quick ground so I was a bit

surprised how well she handled it the last day. Joseph likes his

filly a lot and obviously it=s quick enough out there and not easy

to make up ground, So I=d say they are two smart fillies. We=ll

look at the [G2] Debutante and the [G1] Moyglare. It would be

the obvious path with those two-year-old fillies.@ Cont. p3

Pedigree Notes In the pre-Serpentine era, Homecoming Queen was one of the

first examples of what her trainer could do with slow learners as

she took eight starts to break her maiden before going to

Newmarket and winning the 2012 renewal of the mile Classic by

nine lengths. Bred solely to Galileo, Shale is her third black-type

performer and her best after the stakes-placed First of Spring

(Ire) and G2 Futurity S. third Berkeley Square (Ire). She is a

daughter of Lagrion (Diesis {GB}), which makes her a half-sister

to the former Ballydoyle great Dylan Thomas (Ire), the juvenile

champion Queen=s Logic (Ire) (Grand Lodge) and Remember

When (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) who was promoted to second

in the 2010 G1 Epsom Oaks.

Remember When has produced five black-type winners all by

Galileo headed by the aforementioned G1 Epsom Derby hero

Serpentine (Ire) and Wedding Vow (Ire) who captured the G2

Kilboy Estate S. and was runner-up in the G1 Nassau S. Queen=s

Logic, whose unbeaten career was cut short by injury, has

produced the G2 Diadem S. and G2 Lowther S. winner and G1

Prix de l=Abbaye de Longchamp and G1 Haydock Sprint Cup

runner-up Lady of the Desert (Rahy) who is in turn the dam of

Queen Kindly (GB) (Frankel {GB}) who also took the Lowther.

Homecoming Queen=s 2019 Galileo offering is a colt.

advertised his versatility when returning to that venue to add

Thursday=s G3 Bahrain International Ballyroan S. to his tally over

a mile and a half. Representing David Spratt, Sean Jones and

Lynne Lyons, the 15-8 favourite stalked the leader Fresnel (GB)

Bay (GB) filly (lot 279) from the extended family of European

highweight Minding (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

For Part I of the 2019 sale, a son of No Nay Never topped

proceedings at €165,000, while the gross was €9,415,500 for

388 yearlings. The average was €24,267 with a median of

€20,000.

ALPINE STAR EYEING DEAUVILLE DATE G1 Coronation S. winner Alpine Star (Ire) (Sea The Moon

{Ger}), last seen finishing a short-neck second to Fancy Blue (Ire)

(Deep Impact {Jpn}) in the G1 Prix de Diane on July 5, could

resurface in the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville on

Aug. 16 if ground conditions play to her liking.

AIf all goes according to plan she could go to Deauville, but we

just need to keep an eye on the ground,@ said Alan Cooper,

racing manager to owner/breeder The Niarchos Family. AThere=s

very hot weather forecast, but then there could be

thunderstorms, so we=ll watch out for that. Her form appears

very strong, with Fancy Blue winning again at Goodwood. The

3-year-old fillies appear to be very strong this year which is

exciting, it=s good for racing.@

The Niarchos Family could yet have another major player in

the division in Albigna (Ire), also from the yard of Jessica

Harrington. The daughter of Zoffany (Ire) went into winter

quarters with hopes high off a win in the G1 Prix Marcel

Boussac, but has only been seen once this year when sixth in the

G1 Irish 1000 Guineas.

AAlbigna is making steady progress and it=s possible she could

have a busy end-of-year programme,@ said Cooper. AShe could

reappear in the Snow Fairy at The Curragh at the end of the

month, we=ll just wait and see. But all is well with her.@

Cooper reported that 3-year-old colt Highest Ground (Ire)

(Frankel {GB}), who lost his unbeaten record when beaten a

neck at third asking in the G2 Dante S. on July 9, will stay in

training at four.

ASir Michael is very happy with him currently, but he=s just

waiting a little bit longer before committing to a plan,@ said

Cooper. AThere was a mad rush when racing resumed with all

the races crammed together, but it=s not like that now. The

long-term plan for him is for next year, he=ll be staying in

training as a 4-year-old, so Sir Michael will feel his way and

when he=s ready, he=ll take it from there. I would think Highest

Ground fits the profile of a typical Sir Michael late-maturing

type--I hope so.@

SOTTSASS PLEASES IN GALLOP; GONTAUT-

BIRON NEXT Last-out G1 Prix Ganay winner Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) is on

course for the G3 Prix Gontaut-Biron at Deauville on Aug. 15

after pleasing connections in a route piece of work on Thursday.

AHe did a simple work, as we are accustomed to do,@ said

trainer Jean-Claude Rouget of Peter Brant=s 4-year-old. AThe goal

is not to have a hard work; once they have made their seasonal

bow, we do maintenance work. They worked over 1800

metresBall went well. The horse has a good action and he

behaves as he does when he is in good form.

AAfter the Ganay, we left him alone for three weeks. His work

picked up for a comeback in mid-August. We didn=t know if he

would go to York [for the Juddmonte International] or to

Deauville. Apparently, we are going to Deauville. He still had a

fairly long break and the York race would be difficult for a

semi-return to racing.@ Cont. p6

ASottsass will then have several options before running in the

QIPCO ANNOUNCES BRITISH CHAMPIONS

DAY PRIZE MONEY Total prize money for the 10th QIPCO British Champions Day

on Oct. 17 was cut to £2.5 million, QIPCO announced on

Thursday. The purse reduction is a result of the coronavirus

pandemic, but the raceday remains the richest in Great Britain.

The G1 QIPCO Champion S. will be run for £750,000, while the

G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. sponsored by QIPCO will be £650,000.

Both the G1 QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares and the G1

QIPCO British Champions Sprint S. will be conducted at £350,000

and the G2 QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup will

carry a purse of £300,000. Races will close on Sept. 1.

AWe are pleased to be able to stage a card worth ,2.5 million

on QIPCO British Champions Day despite our income streams

being so negatively affected and the enormous challenges facing

the sport currently,@ said British Champions Series Chief

Executive Rod Street. AQIPCO British Champions Day has seen

some superlative performances over the past decade and it is

hugely important to us that we continue to make running a

horse on the day as attractive as possible. We are very grateful

for QIPCO=s long-standing partnership of British Champions

Series and British Champions Day which has enabled us to make

this early commitment.@

SPECTATORLESS RACING TO CONTINUE IN UK In the latest resumption of racing update, racing behind closed

doors is set to continue for the foreseeable future, the British

Horseracing Authority announced on Thursday. Cont. p7

UK Racing Update Cont.

The BHA thanked participants for their continued support and

cooperation in following the behind closed doors protocols, but

stressed that with both government and public health concerns

about a rise in cases and a potential >second wave= of COVID-19

cases, that it is vital everyone in racing continues to follow the

proper protocols so that progress can be resumed towards re-

introduction of spectators at the earliest available opportunity

through the rescheduling of pilot events.

BHA Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jerry Hill has requested all

participants and racecourse attendees to follow the following

three steps to help keep everyone safe:

$ Follow all the social distancing requirements when you

attend racing, whether you=re in the >green zone= for

participants or the owners= area.

$ Do not cross from one zone to another, as this weakens

the controls and could lead to many more people being

quarantined if there is a positive case, as well as risking

people=s health.

$ Please let the BHA=s Medical Team

([email protected]) know if there=s a

positive case so they can liaise with the public health

authorities to manage the NHS Test & Trace process

with the minimum impact. Dr. Hill can offer advice to

employers, which can limit the effects on their business

whilst keeping staff safe.

The BHA also reminded all racing personnel that the reason

restrictions have not been further eased, is that the specific

government guidance for elite sport applies to racing, whereas

these same restrictions would not be applied to local businesses,

like the local pub. Public health authorities have also made it

clear to the BHA that they will consider a 14-day quarantine

period for all racecourse attendees in the same zone as

someone who tests positive for COVID-19.

For more information on the latest resumption of racing

update, go to www.britishhorseracing.com.

HEIDER FAMILY STABLES TO SPONSOR

ROUND TOWER S. American-based owner Scott Heider and his family will sponsor

the G3 Round Towner S., The Curragh announced on Thursday.

The six-furlong contest for 2-year-olds will be held on Aug. 28.

Heider=s yellow and red colours are under the Heider Family

Stables banner. They have been carried to victory by Kitten=s Joy

colt Crossfirehurricane in the G3 CoolmoreTen Sovereigns

Gallinule S. in June.

AIt=s just been a fantastic experience for us,@ Heider reflected,

on his five-year involvement with Irish racing. AWe love our

partnership with Joseph O=Brien and we=ve been very fortunate

to race some talented individuals on Irish racecourses the last

few years including Crossfirehurricane, A New Dawn (Ire)

(Zoffany {Ire}), Take A Deep Breath (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}) and

our latest winner, an American Pharoah filly named Pista. Horse

Racing Ireland has been a pleasure to work with as they always

seem to go out of their way to make sure our experience is quite

special.@

The Curragh Racing and Sponsorship Manager Evan Arkwright

added, AWe are very grateful to Scott and his family for their

generous support and hope the sponsorship of the Round Tower

S. will be the start of a very positive partnership between us.

Scott=s racing colours have become very familiar to Irish racing

fans and following the victory of Crossfirehurricane in the G3

Coolmore Ten Sovereigns Gallinule S. in June, we hope that he

will enjoy many more successes at The Curragh.@

THE RISING STARS OF SPRING

By Bren O'Brien

Last season's five 2-year-old Group 1 races in Australia

provided four different Group 1 winners, and their returns

ahead of their spring campaigns will be eagerly anticipated. But

there are also a host of other very talented horses who have just

turned three who are ready to make an impression in the

coming months.

We have picked out a selection of 10 of the most exciting

3-year-olds, a list which while we don=t expect will be the

definitive guide to the spring's top-class winners, it does give an

indication of the level of expectation there is about the next

generation of stars.

Farnan (Not A Single Doubt x Tallow (Street Cry {Ire})

Trainers: Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott

Farnan proved himself the top seed of the 2-year-olds last

season, winning five of his six starts, including the G1 Golden

Slipper S., where he beat two of the three other 2-year-old

Group 1 winners of last season in Tagaloa (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn})

and King's Legacy (Redoute's Choice). He headed straight to the

paddock after that, skipping the chance to win further Group 1

races, instead spending some time in the Queensland sun over

the winter before returning to the Waterhouse/Bott stable

about a month ago. He will trial in the next couple of weeks

before likely resuming in the G2 Run To The Rose.

From there, it is likely he will contest the G1 Golden Rose, and

should he continue his dominance, then it is likely he will

contest The Everest, and then possibly the G1 Coolmore Stud S.

He also holds nominations for the G1 Caulfield Guineas and

the G1 Cox Plate, but that path seems unlikely. His spring

direction could also be determined by a possible change of

ownership, with Kia Ora Stud reportedly set to purchase an

interest in the colt.

Rothfire (Rothesay x Huss On Fire (NZ) (Hussonet {USA})

Trainer: Robert Heathcote

While he had already won five of his first six starts before the

G1 JJ Atkins S. it wasn't until he completely dominated that race,

winning by 3.3l, that Rothfire was elevated in the public mind to

one of the rising stars of the Australian turf. And what a story he

has been. A sales reject, bought for $10,000 by trainer Robert

Heathcote, he has now won over $750,000 and shapes as a

leading contender in the major races of the spring.

Rothfire is back in work and will trial at Doomben on Aug. 11,

before having another jumpout ahead of a first-up run in the G2

Run To The Rose on Sept. 12. From there, the G1 Golden Rose

will be his destination, with Heathcote also entertaining

thoughts of contesting The Everest. His trainer is planning on

sending him south without him, because COVID-19 restrictions

are likely to mean Heathcote is unable to move back and forth

between states. Rothfire also holds a nomination for the G1

Caulfield Guineas.

Doubtland (Not A Single Doubt x Miss Sharapova (NZ)

(Ustinov)

Trainers: John, Michael and Wayne Hawkes

The word 'untapped' very much applies to this $1.1 million

Orbis Bloodstock-owned colt, whose two racetrack appearances

featured a soft 2-year-old win at Randwick, followed by a 4l

romp in the G3 Kindergarten S. Team Hawkes are masters of

getting these talented colts to peak in their 3-year-old year and

many good judges have Doubtland on their list of horses to

watch for the spring.

The G1 Golden Rose looks an ideal spring target for him, but it

wouldn't completely surprise to see Team Hawkes also look to

target the G1 Coolmore Stud S. a race they won last year with a

horse of a similar profile in Exceedance (Exceed And Excel).

Doubtland is expected to make his first appearance at the trials

in the coming weeks.

Tagaloa | Bronwen Healy

North Pacific (Brazen Beau x Up in Lights (NZ) (O'Reilly {NZ})

Trainers: John, Michael and Wayne Hawkes

Team Hawkes have taken a different path with their other star

colt from Orbis, North Pacific, having already kicked his

campaign off with a comfortable win at Rosehill last month. He

only had one previous start as a 2-year-old, running third behind

Farnan in the G2 Silver Slipper S., a debut performance which

showed he deserves to be considered among the best 3-year-old

spring prospects.

North Pacific, who was the $800,000 Sale topper at last year's

Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale, trialled earlier this week,

and again looked sharp and will be the horse with the race

fitness on his side should he head towards the G1 Golden Rose

which looks likely. He is also nommed for the G1 Caulfield

Guineas and G1 Cox Plate.

King's Legacy (Redoute's Choice x Breakfast In Bed (Hussonet {USA})

Trainers: Peter and Paul Snowden

Is it possible for a dual Group 1

winning 2-year-old to go into the

spring under the radar? King's

Legacy has all the attributes to be

one of the boom horses. He's a

$1.4-million yearling who won both

the G1 Inglis Sires' and the G1

Champagne S. and is trained by

Peter and Paul Snowden, who are

considered one of the finest

'stallion-makers' in the game, while

his ownership group is headed by

astute judge, James Harron.

Interestingly, Paul Snowden

indicated last week that he would go first-up into the G1 Golden

Rose, after which a decision would be made on which direction

he goes. The Caulfield Guineas, a race which he is nommed for,

looks an ideal spring target, while there is also the possibility of

the Cox Plate. However, if he proves himself more of a sprinter,

he could also be targeted at The Everest and the Coolmore Stud

S. He is set to trial this Tuesday.

Peltzer (So You Think (NZ)) x Miss Otto (Elusive Quality {USA})

Trainer: Gerald Ryan

He lacks the profile of a few of the others on this list, but

Gerald Ryan's colt has been super impressive in his three wins to

date, especially his most recent success on a heavy track at

Randwick back in May when he led all the way to win by 4l.

Peltzer looks a professional racehorse, with natural speed, who

should take considerable improvement into his 3-year-old

season. Ryan opted not to take him to the JJ Atkins S., which

could prove a masterstroke in terms of his spring prospects, and

in particular, his shot at the Golden Rose, which is set to be his

major target, while Ryan is also keen to look at the Caulfield

Guineas.

Tagaloa (Lord Kanaloa (Jpn)) x Vasilissa (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn})

Trainers: Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young

Tagaloa's win in the G1 Blue Diamond S. established him as

one of the season's best 2-year-olds, and he backed that up with

two good performances in Sydney, running second to Farnan in

the G2 Todman S. and then fourth in the Golden Slipper. Having

had six starts as a juvenile, he has had a good spell, with Trent

Busuttin reporting he had bulked up in the break.

He looked sharp in a Cranbourne jump-out earlier this week and

will resume in the G3 McNeil S. at Caulfield on August 15, with

COVID-19 border restrictions to determine whether he contests

the Golden Rose or the G3 Guineas Prelude on his way to his

ultimate Spring Carnival target, the Caulfield Guineas, Busuttin

has not ruled out a tilt at the Cox

Plate either.

Away Game (Snitzel x Elusive

Wonder (Elusive Quality {USA})

Trainers: Ciaron Maher and David

Eustace

Away Game proved herself the

iron horse of the 2-year-old ranks

last campaign. She was a

pre-Christmas stakes winner,

claimed the R. Listed Magic Millions

2YO Classic, won a G3 Widden S.,

ran fourth in a Blue Diamond S.,

then second in the Golden Slipper S. before winning the G2

Percy Sykes. Not content with that, she then took on the open

age fillies and mares in the G1 Robert Sangster S. finishing a

creditable fifth.

It=s probably little wonder that Maher and Eustace are looking

to give her a quieter start to the spring. She is nommed for the

Golden Rose S. the Thousand Guineas and even the Cox Plate,

but her stated spring goal is the G1 Manikato S. after which she

will look to the G1 Coolmore Stud S.

Hanseatic (Street Boss (USA) x Itameri (Exceed And Excel)

Trainers: Anthony and Sam Freedman

Godolphin colt Hanseatic made quite an impression in his

2-year-old campaign, winning a trio of stakes races to start his

career before a narrow second in the Blue Diamond S. before

never really getting into the race when 10th in the Golden

Slipper S.

The plan, according to his co-trainer Sam Freedman, will be

sprint races in Melbourne kicking off with the G2 McEwen S. in

September, then the Manikato S., before a shot at the Coolmore

Stud S. He does hold nominations for the Golden Rose and the

Caulfield Guineas, but that path seems unlikely.

Hungry Heart (Frankel (GB) x Harlech (GB) (Pivotal {GB})

Trainer: Chris Waller

The Yulong-owned filly is a bit of a smoky on this list, but her

2-year-old performances, added to the esteem she is held in by

jockey James McDonald, puts her among the must watch

3-year-olds of the spring. A runner-up at Flemington on debut,

Hungry Heart impressed with her win in the G2 Sweet Embrace

S., while she was not far from the action in the Golden Slipper,

finishing fifth at just her third start.

Nominated for all the spring 3-year-old features, she trialled

well in her first serious spring hitout at Rosehill on Tuesday,

ridden in behind runners. The daughter of Frankel (GB) is

currently a clear favourite for the G1 Flight S., and could

dominate the fillies in the Princess Series.
