DREAM MACHINES 2013 5jTO OUR FRIENDS, old and new, we say welcome back to our beautiful Coastside,
thanks for your support, and have a most wonderful time here. We’re delighted to be presenting our 23rd annual show and proud to say it keeps
getting bigger and better every year. The show is not only fun for exhibitors and spectators, it also benefits the functionally
disabled members of our community; and for that we again say, thank you. Each year the Coastside Adult Day Health Center uses all the proceeds to preserve
existing programs and, in some cases, to establish new ones. All the volunteers hope you enjoy this year’s show. Please tell your friends about it
and join us every year on the last weekend of April.
Drive Safely,Bob Senz, show founder
Chad Hooker, show chairmanBob Pelikan, show co-chairman
To our volunteers:On behalf of the Board of Directors, staff, and most importantly, participants of the
Coastside Adult Day Health Center, thank you for volunteering your time during the Pacific Coast Dream Machines. This event is a critical source of funds to support our program costs. It is because of people like you, our volunteers, that this event is such a remarkable success.
The costs of providing our participants with the real needs they require to maintain optimum independence are more than most can afford to pay. The profits from this event provide us with the means to assist those participants who need it, keeping them close to family and friends and in the community many of them helped to build. Your time and effort is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,Janie Bono, CADHC executive director
Thank you:CADHC gratefully acknowledges the support and leadership of show Founder and Visionary
Bob Senz, Chairman Chad Hooker, Co-Chairman Bob Pelikan and all of the dedicated volunteers, participants, exhibitors, sponsors and attendees.

DREAM MACHINES 2013 9
The Military Vehicle Technology Foundation (MVTF) will be showing three of its iconic military vehicles at
the Pacific Coast Dream Machines Show. The MVTF owns the largest private
collection of military vehicles in the world at its museum in nearby Portola Valley and is a longtime Dream Machines fan favorite.
Members of the MVTF’s Re-enactor Volunteer Program will be on hand to talk about their rare vehicles.
The MVTF “tour guides” will be dressed in military uniforms and provide excellent photo opportunities for the public.
The MVTF plans to enhance its presentation by conducting periodic blank firings of the vehicle mounted machine guns which promises to be an exciting attraction for event patrons.
With display military aircraft and MVTF vehicles in the background, the re-enactors from the West Coast Armor Association also plan to perform a “mock-battle” entitled, “Rescue of a Downed Pilot” during the show. All of the re-enactors are trained in “presentation stunt combat” and are regularly used in feature movies, as well as TV programs on HBO, The History Channel, and Discovery Channel. These staged battles promise to be fascinating entertainment and great chance for kids to talk and have their picture taken with a “soldier”.
The MVTF display feature a pair of Joint Light Tactical Vehicles, brand new to the MVTF collection making their first public appearance, and an Israeli M5 half-track equipped with de-milled machine guns. The public will be able to actually get into the
half-track, “play soldier” and have their photo taken.
The Joint Light Tactical Vehicles (JLTVs) are currently being tested as as replacement for the Humvee in both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Marine Corps. Available in four and six man versions, JLTVs can be equipped with a variety of machine guns or grenade launchers.
The Israeli M5 was built in 1944 by International Harvester and was exported to France that same year. During the 1950’s, it was sold to the Israelis who replaced the original IHC RED-450 gasoline engine with a Cummins diesel.
This vehicle was knocked out on the Sinai Peninsula during the 1973 Arab-Israeli War and abandoned for 20+ years. It was recovered in the mid-1990’s and brought to the U.S. and repaired to its present state.
For more information about the MVTF, please visit their website: www.mvtf.org. DM
About the MVTFThe Military Vehicle Technology
Foundation (MVTF) oversees one of the largest and most significant collections of historical military vehicles in the world. MVTF’s goal is to acquire, restore, and interpret the historical significance of 20th and 21st century military vehicles. Domestic and foreign combat vehicles such as tanks, armored cars, self-propelled artillery, and other technically interesting mobile platforms are the focus of the collection. The Foundation was established in 1998 to serve the interests of authors, historians, educators, the defense industry, veteran groups, model makers, as well as the entertainment industry.

DREAM MACHINES 2013 13
The first flight by the C-47 prototype was made from Clover Field (now Santa Monica) on Dec. 17, 1935,
which just happened to be the 32nd anniversary of the Wright brothers’ first flight.
For half a century the Douglas C-47 and its numerous derivatives remained the most versatile aviation workhorse the world has ever known, and could arguably claim the title of world’s greatest aircraft at the time.
Estrella Warbirds Museum’s beautifully refurbished C-47 will be one of the featured displays at this year’s Pacific Coast Dream Machines Show at Half Moon Bay Airport.
Born in brassy years of the mid-1930s, the C-47 was derived from the DC-3 family of commercial planes.
The DC-3 became the world’s standard airliner, before donning war paint as the world’s standard military transport.
Recognizing its great potential as a military transport, the U.S. Army specified a number of changes needed to make the aircraft acceptable for military use, including more powerful engines, the removal of airline seating in favor of utility seats along the walls, a stronger rear fuselage and floor, and the addition of
large loading doors. A large order was placed in 1940 for the
military DC-3, which was designated C-47 and became known as “Skytrain,” a name it would soon be asked to live up to.
The C-47 had quite a few nicknames: Gooney Bird, Super DC-3 (R4D-8), Skytrooper, Biscuit Bomber, Dumbo (SC-47 Search-and Rescue variant), among many others. It was sometimes called the Vomit Comet by Army paratroops during the Normandy invasion.)
More than 13,000 aircraft were built, under various configurations, by multiple manufacturers in multiple countries. The museum’s N47SJ is one of 64 registered by the FAA and there are approximately 300 still flying in the world.
A complete restoration to restore her to 1943 charm was completed in mid-summer 2009. This particular C-47B has seen service in the U.S. Army Air Corp, then with the Belgium, French, and Israeli Air Forces prior to landing in Canada. Prior to leaving Canada, it had a total of 9,420 flight hours. She returned to flight status August 1st, 2009.
After sitting silent for six years, the Wonder Boys of the restoration crew went to Canada, fired it up and flew it home to Paso Robles. DM

Jack Costella is one of those guys who you have to meet to believe.
He designs tiny ground effects streamliners that shatter records everywhere they run.
His work inspires all involved in the world of land speed machines.
Costella bases his unique designs on what he calls his Nebulous Theorem which simply explained means “Do your own thing and not what the other guys are doing.”
The Costella team is one of the most successful of all the vehicles running at Bonneville for the last 20 years.
The team has set over 100 National and International land speed records.
They are presently competing with the three streamliners that will be on display at
the Pacific Coast Dream Machines Show. These sleek machines and the
drivers will be present to answer any questions and talk with fans about their streamliners and what it takes to compete in lands peed racing.
The Nebulous Theorem streamliners to be on display include:
#5050 Nebulous Theorem IV – Jack and Keiko Costella – a motorcycle streamliner, top speed 208 mph, two International records and 14 National records.
#6060 Nebulous Theorem V – Costella /Dennee – Michele Brading driver, 500cc, 8 records, top speed 181 mph.
#8080 Nebulous Theorem VII – Costella /Cunha/Bassano – Tim Cunha driver, 750cc, top speed 218 mph, 7 records. DM

Grand National champion roadster
Hot rod cars, combined with hot summer nights might have been a Hollywood creation in George Lucas’ ground-breaking film, “American Graffiti,” but for Scott Hawley and his father, Fred, hot rods have been a way of life.
“I’m a fourth-generation San Franciscan,” says Scott, “and a second-generation hot rodder. I have huge respect for the passion of legendary hot rodders like the Brizios. And, of course, my dad.”
And it’s not just about racing.“My dad and I love every aspect of hot rods and roadsters, from finding and restoring
them, to the glory moment of going out there in front of an appreciative crowd,” says Hawley. “I’ve been very blessed to share this with my father.”
At Dream Machines, they will exhibit their award winning, 1940 Willys, which took first place at the Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona in 2012. “This car is a blown 383 with 600 HP,” says Hawley with pride. “It’s on an Outlaw chassis and body, and is show finished underneath as well.”
They will also show their Black Widow 57 Chevy 150. It was one of two test mules used in NASCAR, and later became a NHRA drag car.
“It has a 283 fuel-injected motor and was used only in one NASCAR race before it was banned from racing,” says Hawley, with a hint of pride. “We found it in a falling down barn in the 80’s and restored back to its original drag days.”
Showing his cars at Dream Machines will be a full circle of sorts for Scott’s father, Fred Hawley, who remembers drag racing in Half Moon Bay in the 60’s.
“Being at Dream Machines,” he says, “will bring back many happy memories. And probably create some new ones.” DM

The news is good—and very green. In July 2012, the Lightning
Motorcycles Race team won the EPower/TTXGP race during MotoGP Weekend at Laguna Seca. But what really distinguished this landmark achievement? It was accomplished on solar power alone.
The same bike, sure to spellbind speed freaks and environmentalists alike at this year’s Pacific Coast Dream Machines Show, also set a new land speed record at El Mirage in November 2012.
These benchmarks make Lightning Motorcycles CEO Richard Hatfield very excited about the future.
“Lightning SB2 SuperBikes demonstrated that alternatively fueled vehicles can win against current competition with currently available technology. And this ultimately means a ‘win’ for everyone,” he says. “Solar energy-fueled vehicles are not just a theoretical concept to be realized sometime in the distant future. They are a reality today.
They can compete head to head with gasoline powered vehicles, without leaving a carbon footprint.”
The decision to go with solar was an easy one for Hatfield, and he especially enjoys being able to show nay-sayers that the impossible is, in fact, possible.
“Many people have this idea that electric vehicles are not reliable, that the technology is not really viable,” he explains. “Lightning Motorcycles is showing that using alternative energy doesn’t automatically mean you have to compromise.”
These solar powered bikes aren’t just good for the environment––they’re also very kind to the pocketbook.
“On the highway, we can go about 100 miles on just $1.20 worth of electricity,” says Hatfield. “Even at our top speed of over 218 mph, we calculated that we were still achieving an equivalent of over 50 mpg.”
And those are solid, clean-energy facts we can all get behind. DM

Some people purchase cars and proceed to fill them with old mail, empty containers from the McDonald’s
drive-through window, and empty juice boxes.
Then there’s people like Larry Knapp, who still has the original purchase invoice from the day he drove his 1966 Mustang off the showroom floor.
Since that day, a lot of people have had their hands on Knapp’s Mustang—and he has the detailed documentation to prove it.
“After three years of driving the car on the street—and in the occasional street race—I decided it was time to get serious about drag racing, which meant going to the best in the business to modify my car,” Knapp explains. “I have every work order ever written for this car.”
The first modifications included a bigger engine, bigger tires, and a name that could live up to the all that power. Thus was born Larry Knapp’s “Stampede.”
Knapp raced the car until 1985, when his energy was re-directed to off-road
motorcycle, an activity he enthusiastically shared with his family.
As for “Stampede,” the little mustang was kept under a car cover in the garage for 19 ½ years.
In January 2005, Larry decided it was time to bring Stampede out of retirement.
He got the gleaming black beast back into race-ready condition, and, in the process, reunited with many of his pals from “the good old days” when he and Stampede were regulars on the drag racing and car show circuit.
“It’s just so amazing how much fun it is getting back in touch with the guys from back in the day,” Knapp says. “And to get back into racing, it’s fantastic. I’m just having the time of my life.”
Knapp is looking forward to participating in this year’s Pacific Coast Dream Machines Show, where a special display of nostalgia dragsters is planned to honor the old Half Moon Bay Drag Strip, one of the west coast’s premier tracks in the 1960’s.
Knapp and Stampede are sure to draw fans of the iconic Ford Mustang, and of drag racing. “I’m sure I’ll see a few familiar faces,” he says. “And I’m looking forward to meeting new friends.” DM

DREAM MACHINES 2013 27
If the magnificent machines are not mesmerizing enough, there are plenty of other amusements for youngsters at the
Pacific Coast Dream Machines Show.Let the excitement begin with
our new Zip-line! Zip-liners are safety harnessed, then climb a spiral staircase up to the crow’s nest 28 feet in the air. They are then attached to the zipline by our trained team via a redundant safety pulley and prepared for launch. Two at a time can zip side by side so not only will they enjoy the ride but also shriek in unison while in flight.
Are you ready to jump high into the sky? Flip around and catch some massive air? With Mobile Rock’s incredibly fun Quad Bungee, up to 4 people can be jumping at one time. Flips are fun and easy to do. Heights of 20 feet above the ground can be reached.
For the ride of your life, hop on “Rocky” the Mechanical Bull and HOLD ON! Always a total blast to ride, “Rocky” is ready to please both the brave rider and the crowd. “Rocky” has a revolutionary “life-like” soft head and immediate stop mechanism to keep all riders out of harms way. The air cushion landing ring let’s you off easy, in case “Rocky” doesn’t!
For a real scream, you gotta try Waterballz! Participants climb into a giant, clear inflatable ball which is filled with fresh air. The the ball is zipped up, which completely seals it, and they enter an inflatable pool that is 24 by 24 feet and literally walk (and roll) on water.
Experience the thrills, chills and
excitement of real NASCAR racing on Pit Stop Mobile Racing’s micro-reality, remote-controlled track. Imagine racing your favorite NASCAR driver on a banked oval speedway at speeds over 200 mph! You’re in complete control as you head into the banked curve, your left hand gripping the full size steering wheel, your right hand the shifter.
Classic Amusements provides exciting rides, games and concessions for special events throughout the West. Returning are smash hits including the Dixieland Twister, a 10-seat mechanical speed swing, and Zoom, a true piece of Americana –– it’s the actual ride, fully restored, that appeared in the legendary 1978 movie, Grease.
Kids and adults alike will enjoy Mobile Rock’s challenging 24-foot Climbing Wall where trained climbing technicians will be available to show you the ropes. The wall is color coded to assist climbers, from the youngest to the most advanced, make it to the to the top.
“It’s Fun Face Painting” brings an extra sparkle to the event! Nothing says dazzle like wearable artwork — bright colors, glitter and imagination. Ladies look great with some sparkly wings on a bared shoulder or a trendy tribal tattoo design down the leg.
Get some glitter! Have some fun with a temporary tattoo by California’s award-winning, most sought-after henna artist Swati Shah of henna Traditions. Henna painting is an ancient, all-natural, pain-free cosmetic and healing art. DM

Creative Coastsider’s biodiesel bus runs on recycled cooking oil
These days, travel by RV is likely to engender terrifying thoughts of the prices at the gas pump. But not for David and Ginny Eck, who recently took their 1971 Silver Eagle luxury coach for a weekend jaunt to Pismo Beach — and didn’t stop at a
single gas station. The Ecks’ secret? Their coach — along with several other vehicles used in the family
business at Half Moon Bay Auto Repair — runs on biodiesel, made from cooking oil recycled from Coastside restaurants. “It’s kind of fun to mention to our friends that, when they go out to dinner, they’re putting fuel in our vehicles,” laughs Dave.
Eck patronizes only eateries that use the best oils, with no trans fats. “The restaurants love me because they’re recycling their product and getting paid for it,” he says.
“The state loves me because I pay a 16-cent per gallon road tax.”
Eck admits his mini-refinery has the look of a biology lab, but insists the process is fairly simple and low-tech. “Anyone could do this. There’s extensive information on biodiesel online, where you can also buy home-brew guides and kits,” he explains.
Biodiesel is not just environmentally friendly, the government likes it, too. To that end, there are currently a number of federal tax incentives offered to people who operate biodiesel vehicles.
The Silver Eagle, equipped with a stainless steel refrigerator, flat-screen TVs, a full kitchen, hardwood floors, and a full master bath and bedroom, offers one other benefit. “It’s the ultimate in earthquake preparedness,” Eck says. “We’re off the grid, with three backup generators.”
Eck is ready to hit the road at any time, but his next stop is the Pacific Coast Dream Machines Show, April 27-28 at Half Moon Bay Airport, where he’ll be available to talk about two of his favorite topics — biodiesel and the open road.
As he likes to say, “When you’ve got your own fuel, you can really go places.” DM

DREAM MACHINES 2013 35
From the syncopated sound of ragtime to the big band swing era, from the doo-wop years
to Motown, music has always been the background to America’s love affair with cars and airplanes.
Once again, music will play a major part in this year’s Pacific Coast Dream Machines Show, with tempos sure to tap into every music lover’s tastes.
The rhythm will get you going first thing on Saturday at 10 AM when Half Moon Bay harmonica great Grant Walters joins internationally known brothers Robert and Charlie Powell for a mélange of world beat and American rock favorites. Robert Powell, who has composed music for film, television, and multi-media, has worked with Peter Gabriel and Jackson Browne, among others. His brother, Charlie, who brings entrancing harmonies and guitar work to the mix, is also a featured performer in Santa Cruz band, Surf City Swing.
For folks who appreciate such bands as The Traveling Wilburys, Tom Petty, and The Marshall Tucker Band, the stage will come alive at 11:30 with Pel & The Pelicans. Lending a unique flavor will be guest performer Kevin Brennan, a soulful Belfast troubadour who, at age 16, played with Van Morrison . Brennan now frequently shares the stage with Van’s daughter, Shana. Joining Brennan, Pel and the Pelicans will be another guest performer, Todd Tone Gilbert, a noted gospel singer and Congolese drummer whose music is made unforgettable with a blend of ukulele and ska.
Fans of Motown will absolutely not want to miss The Inciters, who will hit the stage at 2 PM. Known across America and Europe
as the best in “Northern Soul,” this 11-piece dance band recreates the infectious rhythms that made superstars out of groups like The Temptations, and Diana Ross and the Supremes.
Sunday starts out with Big Cat Tolefree, who year after year, continues to dominate blues award shows. A legendary musician who has opened for the incomparable BB King, Tolefree is certain to set the tone for a memorable morning at Dream Machines.
Grammy-nominated guitarist Bill Kirchen takes over the stage at 1 PM. Perhaps best known for the distinctive licks that framed the Commander Cody classic, “Hot Rod Lincoln,” Kirchen was named “Titan of the Telecaster” by Guitar Player Magazine. He has appeared on stage and in the recording studio with Maria Muldaur, Emmylou Harris, Elvis Costello, and many more. He’s also a featured performers at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival every year. Look for him to amaze with his ineffable ability to seamlessly move from country swing to Motown. DM

The Pacific Coast Dream Machines is more that just an extravaganza for anyone who loves motorized machines. It’s also
key to the success of a Coastside treasure — the Coastside Adult Day Health Center.
In tenuous economic times, said CADHC Executive Director Janie Bono-James, Dream Machines is “critical to the livelihood of the center.”
Dream Machines is the largest fundraiser of the year for the CADHC. Open since 1982, working in cooperation with participants, their caregivers and personal physicians in a caring and supportive atmosphere, the bustling center at 645 Correas St. in Half Moon Bay provides independent, safe, quality living for Coastside frail elderly and disabled adults, and respite and support services for caregivers.
CADHC offers a daily program of engaging, interesting and recreational activities for participants. It also provides a broad scope of health services operated by professionals and program aides. These include include physical, occupational and speech therapy, psychological and nutrition counseling, support groups for clients and caregivers, nursing and medications monitoring, door-to-door accessible transportation and nutritious and hot daily lunches. Specialized programs include an Alzheimer’s program with an “Alzheimer’s Café” in a coffee-shop
environment in which those with dementia can interact with others.
Other services include nursing and personal care, medication monitoring and social services. In a new intergenerational program, local preschool students visit the center to sing songs and brighten spirits by handing out Valentine’s greetings.
The goal is to restore and maintain physical and mental health so participants can remain in their own homes, close to family, friends and the familiar community they helped build while living interactive, enriched lives.
Providing such services is challenging, especially in an economic downturn. The center’s sources of funding include private donations and private foundations, the Kaiser Perrmanente Foundation, Atkinsons Foundation, the Silicon Valley Community Foundation the Half Moon Bay Beautification Committee, the United Way and San Mateo County Aging and Adult Services. The center also benefits from generous donations to its endowment fund.
Looking ahead, ground was broken in November 2012 for the center’s new home at Main Street and Arnold Way in Half Moon Bay. Completion is expected in spring 2014.
To learn more about the CADHC, contact Bono-James at 726-5067 or visit www.coastsideadultdayhealth.org. Stacy Trevenon
