Lydia Kaʻōnohiponiponiokalani Aholo, hānai daughter of Queen Liliʻuokalani, raised in the royal court of the last reigning monarch of Hawaii, lived from 1878 to 1979—a lifespan encompassing 101 years of tumultuous change in Hawaiʻi. Dr. Bonura’s presentation will focus on why primary source material is essential to understanding and writing Hawaiʻi’s history, as illustrated by her research on the life of Lydia K. Aholo published in the 2013 Hawaiian Journal of History. Selections from the taped recording of 92 year old Lydia Aholo’s 1969 interview will be played. Hear her personal recollections of the Queen.Presentation will be followed by a talk-story.
