Aside• Words spoken in an
undertone not meant to be heard by everyone on stage
Monologue• Long, uninterrupted
speech made by one character–example: Mark Antony’s funeral oration
Soliloquy• Long speech made by one
character alone on stage> The audience may learn the thoughts of character (thinking out loud)–example> Mark Antony alone
with Caesar’s body
Personification• Giving human qualities to
something not human - figurative language–example> “The heart is thirsty
for that noble pledge.”
Simile• Comparison of two unlike
things using “as, like, or than”–example> “I am as constant as
the Northern Star.”
Metaphor• Direct comparison
