• In the early years of film, mainly in the 1940’s, there were mostly melodrama in silent films.

One of the first drama films was ‘ The grapes of wrath’ which showed the effects of depression.

Where ‘Drama’ Originated from

• In the 1950’s there began to be more well-known dramatic actors, for example Glenn Ford, Marilyn Monroe and James Dean. Dramatic films focused on character relationships and development.

Examples of drama films from the 1950’s are:• ‘All about eve’ which focused on women and their relationships with men • ‘Rebel without a cause’ which displayed teenage trouble.

Where ‘Drama’ Originated from

• In the 1960’s there were more politically driven drama’s and they focused more on war.

For example • Judgment at Nuremberg • Flashback

• In the 1970’s some of the most famous drama film’s came out and modern dramatic directors made some of their first films. Also in the 70’s there were more sport drama’s.

For example Rocky was released. Also, Francis Ford Coppela directed the Godfather

• In the 1980’s, dramatic film put emphasis on highly emotional themes.

Drama film is a genre that relies on the emotional and relational development of realistic characters. Dramatic themes also play a large role in the plot as well. Often, these dramatic themes are taken from intense, real life issues. Whether heroes or heroines are facing a conflict from the outside or a conflict within themselves, Drama film aims to tell an honest story of human struggles.
