How to still do well inmatric after procrastinationMany thousands of mat-rics are starting to wakeup to the realisation thattroubleloomslargeonthehorizon because theyhave not sufficiently pre-pared for their final ex-ams.
Although the temptation, however, might be to justthrow in the towel, there is still hope to achiev-ing results you can be proud of, says an educa-tional expert.“Not everyone will approach their exam
knowing that they have done all they could toprepare over the past 12 years, and this givesrise to tremendous anxiety,” says Dr FelicityCoughlan, directoroftheIndependentInstituteof Education. But by changing your mindset and taking
five important steps, your marks could stillqualify you for entry into a stimulating fieldand exciting career, she says.Students who have procrastinated until the
bitter end should immediately do the follow-ing:1.Breathe, accept your situation, and re-
solve to do all you can to rectify itAs with many problems, the first step re-
quired for change is acknowledgment of theproblem. “Be honestwith yourself and face thefact that you have not yet done enough to doas well as you would have liked. Then, resolveto throw all you have into making these lastfew weeks count. That means being ruthlessabout distractions, and studying like you haveneverstudiedbefore. It isonlyafewweeksfromyour life, but they are a few weeks that couldmake aworld of difference to your future pros-pects.”2.Assess the damageLookatallyoursubjectsandatall themateri-
als youneed to study.Again, be ruthless.Makesure that you have not forgotten anything.Once you know what you have to work withand what you need to catch up on, move on to
step 3 (and don’t feel over-whelmed).3. Take time to drawup
a study rosterForget “rest time”, party
time and staying up to datewith “important” TVshows, Candy Crush oryour friends and frenemiesFacebook updates. All yourtime shouldnowbe focused
on your final exam, and only your final exam.“There will be plenty of time to play once
you’re done – and then you’ll deserve it,” saysCoughlan. “Allow yourself to draw up a de-tailed study roster which includes time for asecond round of revision, if possible. But don’tspend all your time planning either! It’s timeto get to work.”4.Now stick to itOnceyou’vedrawnupyourstudyroster, you
may realise that things are not as bleak as youimagined them to be, and that you still haveadequate time left to study. But don’t be drawninto procrastination again, Coughlan warns.“Your roster is your lifeline now, and youshould cling to it and make it work for you.”Here are five tips to achieve best results:• Practise by writing past papers or example
questions rather than just reading• Refresh by making sure you are eating,
sleeping and exercising enough (but beware ofusing these activities to procrastinate)• Organise yourself, your time and your
work.Havinganeatworkingenvironmentanda clear plan for what you need to do and studyevery day, aswell as having the relevantmate-rials sorted and on hand, will go a long wayto reduce anxiety and optimise your learning.• Visualise by using colour and mind maps
and other strategies rather than just words, sothat you can use more of your brain, and• Explain by answering questions or telling
friends or relatives about your work. It is notuntil you have tried to explain what you knowthat you can assess if you know enough to an-swer the questions.

You the entrepreneur:Leadership essentialDAVID MALHERBE
To be an entrepreneur, the own-er of your ownbusiness puts youin a leadership position that youhave perhaps never consideredyourself to be in.The basic aspects of being an
entrepreneur is to start the busi-ness activities and then to keepthem going. You need to give di-rection to the business and thisrequires initiative. You cannot lead an organisa-
tionandpeopleunless youas theleader did not first determinewhat you would like to achieve. When Joseph in the Bible ex-
plained to the Pharaoh themeaning of his dream, he alsosupplied him with a plan of ac-tion to take the country forwardduring the years to come. Hegave direction. I believe that iswhy the Pharaoh appointed himto be leader over Egypt.Very often business owners
merely manage their business-es, keeping all systems in placeand running. This is necessary for the day-
to-day smooth operation of thebusiness, but it does not lead togrowth and expansion of the or-ganisation.There needs to be a leader
who, amidst all the day-to-dayproblemsandchallenges,will beable to look at the bigger pictureand give direction to grow andprosper the business.Unfortunately most business
owners get so caught up in the
day-to-day management of theirbusinesses that they do notmake time to plan for futuregrowth. If you donotmake time to plan
for future growth, you often endup with crisis management ofone problem after another. We often place too much em-
phasis on goodmanagement andtoo little on leadership. Reallygreat leaders usually try to di-vert attention away from them-selves and towards the largergoal of building a great compa-ny.They are often humble people
but very professional in whatthey do.Therefore if we look at suc-
cessful business organisationswewill usually findgood leadersat the helm. They do not look to enrich
themselves or try to impressothers with their wealth, butthey first and foremost care forthe well-being of the businessand the people that work forthem.David Malherbe and Dewald
Scholtz will discuss this topic inmore detail Monday eveningfrom 19:00 till 20:00 on Radio KC107.7FM in the program “Youthe Entrepreneur”(DavidMalherbe is a business-
and career consultant and livesin Wellington. He can be contact-ed via his web page www.jedidi-ah.org.za or 021 873 0262 or onFacebook at “Jy die Entrepre-neur”)

Your choices and decisions may lack prudence, realism, or sound judgment right now. Be waryof overly optimistic plans which are presented to you, signing contracts without doing thoroughbackground work or reading the fine print, or promising something which will be difficult for
you to fulfill. Questions of honor, ethics, law, or morality arise in your mind at this time.
(22 December - 21 January)CAPRICORN
Your vitality and courage are strong now and you are eager to meetchallenges. You can accomplish a great deal of work, especially if it
involves physical effort. If you are active in sports, you will beespecially competitive and vigorous now. Self-confidence is high.
(21 January - 20 February)
AQUARIUS
Unexpected pleasures, new friends, or a more playful, adventurous attitude in yourrelationships make this time period stimulating and delightful. You want a break from
your usual routine and, because you are willing to experiment and to be spontaneous, youare likely to experience a refreshing change of pace.
PISCES(20 February - 21 March)
Self-discipline, training, persevering through a dry or slow period, and working quietly orin meager circumstances are themes in this time period. You have the ability and stamina toconcentrate, to work carefully and thoroughly, and to accomplish something modest, yet of
real practical value and substance now.
ARIES(21 March - 21 April)
Dreams, wishes, and fantasies about love are strong now, and you may be infatuated withsomeone you meet at this time, only to be disappointed later when you discover this person does
not fulfill all of your expectations. You are simply not seeing people objectively now. Yourimagination is very active and creative, however, and so is your yearning for something beautiful.
TAURUS(21 April - 21 May)
Your thoughts turn to love and this is a favorable time to bring out any concerns you havein your personal relationships. Agreements and cooperation can be achieved easily now.You readily discuss your personal needs and desires. Also, you are more aware of beautyand may want to rearrange your decor or buy something to beautify your surroundings.
GEMINI(21 May - 22 June)
This is a time to rely only on yourself and your own resources, gather in your scattered forces, and concentrate on your own work. You may meet numerous obstructions and delays so thatyou don't accomplish as much or work as quickly as you would like. You can, however, do a
very thorough job and also tackle the kind of difficult or disagreeable tasks you usually avoid.
LEO(23 July - 24 August)
Intellectual disagreements or differences of opinion and viewpoints arise now. Youmay have to speak your mind in a way that challenges or unnerves someone else. However, your mind is very active and sharp, and your reasoning power is good, so
this is a good time to do mental work.
VIRGO(24 August - 23 September)
Tangles in romantic relationships are likely now. Your sexual drive is quite strong, and you may be more concerned with satisfying your own desires than in being
sensitive to your partner. All interactions with people of the opposite sex are inclinedto be tense right now.
CANCER(22 June - 23 July)
There is much activity; you move rapidly from one thing to another and a hectic, somewhat stressful pace is likely. Many errands, phone calls, letters which require a
response, and other "busywork" is on the agenda. A minor but rather tenseconfrontation is likely.
LIBRA(23 September - 23 October)
Unexpected pleasures, new friends, or a more playful, adventurous attitude in yourrelationships make this time period stimulating and delightful. You want a break fromyour usual routine and, because you are willing to experiment and to be spontaneous,
you are likely to experience a refreshing change of pace.
SCORPIO(23 October - 23 November)
Unexpected pleasures, new friends, or a more playful, adventurous attitude in yourrelationships make this time period stimulating and delightful. You want a break fromyour usual routine and, because you are willing to experiment and to be spontaneous,
you are likely to experience a refreshing change of pace.

Eat eggs for breakfastand loose weightToday, 11 October, is WorldEgg Day. But dieticians saythat eggs should be celebrat-ed everyday.
Going to work on a couple ofeggs might be the way forwardif you want to shift thosepounds. According to new re-search from the Centre forObesity in America, eatingeggs for breakfast could help tolimit your calorie intakethroughout the rest of the day,by more than 400 calories.
In thestudy,30overweightorobese women ate either an egg-based breakfast (two eggs) or a health bread-based breakfast, containing the same amountof calories and almost identical levels of pro-tein. The researchers recorded the women’seatinghabits and found that just before lunch, the women who had eaten eggs for breakfastfelt less hungry and ate a smaller lunch as aresult. Better still, over the next 36 hours thegroup eating the egg-containing breakfastconsumed, on average, 417 calories less thanthe bagel-eating group.
Researchers thus say that this study sug-gests that eating eggs for breakfastmakes youfeel fuller for longerso thatyoueat lessatyournext few meals. This is great news if you’retrying to loseweight as itmeans youmay findit easier to cut calories without feeling hun-
gry. In fact, based on these results you couldexpect to lose up to 3 kg a month, simply byeating eggs for breakfast.
Eggs are packed with a variety of nutrientsincluding protein, zinc, iron and vitamins A,D, E andB12, but contain just 85 calories each.Oldadvice to limit eggs to just a feweachweekhas also been abandoned. According to theFood Standards Agency in America, there isnow no limit to the number of eggs you caneat in a week as part of a healthy balanceddiet. If you fancy starting the day with eggsit is however recommended to avoid fryingthemandcombine themwithwholemeal toastand a glass of vitamin C-rich unsweetened or-ange juice, which will help the body make thebest use of the iron in the eggs.
