The Big One

Good evening and welcome to the DRAGONS DEN & The Main Event, tonight’s game sees the inform Dragons take on the League leaders the Nottingham Lions with what I can only describe as a must win game if we really want to challenge for Top Spot. Earlier in the season when the Lions visited the Den we were very disappointed to tie the game 3-3 especially after leading for most of the game however, this only makes us now more determined tonight.

Tonight’s game is expected to be a fast flowing & tactical encounter as both teams have a range of players that can all put the puck in the net & play some great hockey, this being credit to British ice hockey. The Nottingham Club is one of the leaders of talent in the hockey community, they have fantastic facilities and established junior development programme. Therefore we need to be at our best tonight in order to ensure the Lions leave the Den with their tails between their legs.

Team update

Unfortunately, due to Matty Compton Defending the Honour of Deeside (And his Title Belt) last weekend, he has been banned for tonight’s game however we are very fortunate to have 2 ex-elite goal tenders in our squad therefore Dave Clancy starts in net tonight.

It was also great that we were able to play some of our junior players last weekend however, for the first time this season the U18s team have a clash game with ours, therefore no juniors ice for the Dragons tonight. Apart from this we have no injuries or other players missing.

Signing off

Like every home game, support the lads and make some noise as your support is greatly needed with tonight’s game and I must say – Its great to see the Kids dancing to James Brown when we score, lets hope its played a lot tonight..

Match Report Vs Fylde Flyers

A promising breakaway from the face off by the flyers gave them no advantage as the Dragons soon regained control of the puck and aimed for control the game. There was no shortage of attempts on goal, in the 1st period the Dragons had 19 vs. 4 from the Flyers.

Ric Hughes turned those attempts into reality when he put the first goal on the board at 8:08, assisted by Shaun Kippin, who shortly after assisted Jordon Bannon to add another to the home side at 8:58.

Playing short-handed after picking up a penalty for cross-checking, Marc Lovell artfully made a beautiful unassisted wraparound at 11:44.

The second period opened with a penalty for the Flyers and an impressive hook from the blue line by James Parsons (ass Si Funival and Ben Simister) declared the battle well and truly on.

The battle cry certainly went up when a rebound off the bar controversially failed to cross the line for the Flyers. Did it go in? Their supporters certainly thought so. And this raised the temperature as the Flyers attacked and scored for definite at 28:35.

Unable to believe the force, the Dragons responded in kind when Parsons slid the puck between ex- Dragons team mate Sam Heyes’ legs.

But controversy struck again. What looked like a sly blade under the helmet grill from Flyers Clark sent Matthew Compton to the ice and tempers flared. Costello came from the bench to defend his team mate and a near equal 5-on-5 fight saw both teams’ having net-minders sent off Compton with a match ban, a game for Flyers back up Ruxton for leaving the bench and Costello with a 4 minute penalty plus 10mins for misconduct.

It seemed to put the Dragons off their stride, some excellent shots on goal failed to hit home and the Flyers found our net at 24:28 until Mike Jones, assisted by Tom King, Kippin broke the Dragons dry run at 37:46 to be followed again at 38:49.

End of second period Dragons led 7-2.

A penalty at 40:15 for cross checking saw the Dragons start the third period short-handed, but Bannon took the crowd’s spirits high with an unassisted short-handed slap-shot in the first two minutes.

However, despite the constant attack kept up from both sides the game remained tight and it seemed opportunities were left untouched. An off-side was called, a penalty picked up for boarding at 51:59, another at 53:28 and the Flyers were back in power-play. Could it end like this?

The answer lay in the combined skills of net-minder Dave Clancy who made some spectacular saves and Parsons, who secured his hat trick goal of the evening, assisted by Bannon at 55:23.

Final buzzer- Dragons 9 – 2 Flyers.
