step. Attendees will be able make edu-

Skeptics Guide to US History Bruce Posey
Meets: Tuesday, 1/21, 1/28, 2/4, 2/11, 2/18, 2/25 1:30-3 p.m. Fee: $ 25
Our knowledge of history—or what we be-
lieve to be history—is the lens through
which we view and interpret the world.
And when that lens is distorted with mis-
leading information, it has powerful ef-
fects on how we perceive the present and
how we make decisions in the future. To
take a skeptical approach to American his-
tory is not to dabble in imaginative con-
spiracy theories or doubt the essence of
the American experiment; rather, it's to
reframe your understanding of this great
nation's past and actually strengthen your
appreciation for what makes American his-
tory such a fascinating chapter in the lar-
ger story of Western civilization. This bold
24-lecture course examines many com-
monly held myths and half-truths about
American history and prompts you to
think about what really happened in the
nation's past—as opposed to what
many believe happened. These lectures
demonstrate how reconsidering some of
the most popular notions of U.S. history
can yield new (and sometimes startlingly
different) interpretations of political, so-
cial, economic, and military events. But
more than just debunking commonly ac-
cepted accounts, you'll be able to replace
these misconceptions with insightful
truths.

Who Was John Meeker?
Edson Allen
Meets: Monday, 1/27 2 - 3:30 p.m. Fee: $ 5
Del Webb is given credit for the success of
Sun City, but much of it was due to John
Meeker. It’s not generally known that Sun
City house sales moved steadily downward
in its first few years until Meeker con-
vinced Webb to put him in charge and
take a new approach. In less than a year,
he had sales moving up. Sun City went on
to fill up faster than planned, and Meeker
got his chance to build a brand new com-
munity, “A New Sun Rising in the West,”
from the ground up. Learn his plans for a
city of 75,000, a major shopping mall, the
largest recreational complex in the south-
west, and more. Earlier, Ed Allen pre-
sented the life of Del Webb, and he re-
turns for another in a series about local
icons.
Jim Boswell - Sound Familiar?
Edson Allen
Meets: Monday, 2/3 2 - 3:30 p.m. Fee: $ 5
The nearby hospital bears the name of
Walter O. Boswell. Jim Boswell owned the
cotton plantations on which portions of
Sun City, Sun City West, and Sun City Grand
were built, and partnered with Webb in
developing two of them. Yet, little more
is known about him or his business. Few
realize that Jim Boswell was the largest
farmer in America, or that the Boswell Em-
pire stretched from vast holdings in Cali-
fornia to Arizona to Oregon to Colorado to
the outback of Australia. This will be the
third and last in the series featuring the
men who developed the Sun Cities. Ed Al-
len from the Del Webb Sun Cities Museum
will again be the speaker.
The Biography of Roads John Hall

This course will consider a select number
of roads which have played a significant
local or regional role in world history. The
instructor has at least some experience
with each of them, and will discuss their
individual characteristics as arteries for pil-
grimage, commerce, fashion, war, or just
getting from here to there. Course mem-
bers will be invited to "present" similarly-
important roads they have known, if so
inclined.

Western Civilization: The French Revo-lution CE 1789 to 1799
Salvatore A. DiLiberto
Meets: Tuesday, 2/11, 2/18, 2/25, 3/4
9 am - 12 noon Fee: $ 20
The search for new knowledge, brought
about by the Scientific Revolution of the
17th century and the Age of Enlighten-
ment of the 18th century, created an envi-
ronment for change in the political order
for many European nations. This age of po-
litical upheaval, spurred by the events of
the American Revolution, swept over
Europe beginning in the late 18th century
and continuing well into the 19th century.
The consequences of the French Revolu-
tion, which began in 1789, would be an
overwhelming influence toward changing
the political order of Europe. We will look
at the backgrounds, the significant first
events, the spread of the Revolution
throughout Europe, the dark side of the
Revolution, “The Terror”, and the develop-
ments that will lead to Europe’s next chap-
ter, the Age of Napoleon. Our study will
include the major characters and their
place in the Revolution with ample discus-
sion of life at the time through a variety of
media and written materials.

Science Fiction: The Mythology of the Future Tom Lombardo
Meets: Wednesday, 1/22, 2/5, 2/19, 3/5, 3/19,4/2(Note: class meets every other week)
1 –3 p.m. Fee: $ 50
Science fiction is the most visible and influ-
ential form of futurist thinking in contem-
porary popular culture. It is the mythology
of the future, providing dramatic narra-
tives of the future that both inspire and
frighten us. It expands our consciousness
and understanding of how humanity fits
into the vast cosmic expanses of space and
time. Science fiction, similar to the great
myths of the past, speaks to the whole
person, both emotion and intellect, pro-
viding imaginatively rich stories that edu-
cate, empower, and enlighten us. Science
fiction is not just about the future of sci-
ence and technology; it is about the future
of everything.
This six-part course provides a comprehen-
sive overview of the evolution of science
fiction from its beginnings in Shelley,

Verne, and Wells through the Golden and
Silver Ages, the New Wave, Cyberpunk, and
the great contemporary efflorescence of
humanistic and cosmic science fiction. We

science fiction has both influenced and
been influenced by the evolution of mod-
ern society over the last few centuries.
For those who think they don’t like science
fiction and for those who have lost touch
with the ongoing development of science
fiction over the last few decades, this
course is for you. It will change your mind;
it will expand your mind. And for those
who have followed science fiction through
the years this course will help you to pull
the pieces together into a coherent
whole.
Though there are no required assignments
in the course, there will be a manageable
list of strongly recommended readings
and films to dive into to make the course
experience more informative and enjoy-
able.

Life in Our Universe Roy Larson
Meets: Wednesday, 3/5, 3/12, 3/19, 3/26, 4/2, 4/9, 4/16, 4/23 10 am-12:30 p.m. Fee: $ 25
Are we alone in the universe? Or does the
cosmos pulse with diverse life forms? If
even the most rudimentary life forms
could be found elsewhere in our universe,
it would be a paradigm-shifting revelation
on par with discovering the atom. There
has never been a better time to study our
universe. NASA's Kepler mission, the first
dedicated extrasolar planet-finding space-
craft, is rapidly changing what we under-
stand about planets around other stars
Life in Our Universe reveals the cutting-
edge research leading scientists to believe
that life is not exclusively the domain of
Earth. These 24 mind-expanding lectures
offer an unparalleled look at the subject of
life and the mysteries that remain. Sup-
ported by stunning visuals, this course
shares some of the most intriguing discov-
eries that the fields of astronomy, biology,
geology, chemistry, and physics have to
offer.
Practical Math Larry Marden
Meets: Monday, 3/17, 3/24 2 P.M. Fee: $ 10
The purpose of "You Should Have Paid At-
tention in Math Class" is to present com-
mon topics in mathematics in a fundamen-
tally different way from what is taught in
school. The presentation will be somewhat
whimsical but is intended to be informa-
tive and useful for the average
“mathematically challenged” senior. It will
show how mathematical illiteracy disad-
vantages a person in life. Examples of the
type of subjects to be included are “Why
you hate (or are terrified of) math” plus a
brain teaser or two, curious facts, and
other items of interest. "Fun with Math"
will include a discussion of a variety of top-
ics in math which are of interest (at least
to me) and have practical uses for all of
us. In addition, students will be challenged
to think about problems and offer their
own solutions.
Gravity Drive: Key to Interstellar Travel Dr. Robert Farrell
Meets: Tuesday, 4/1 1:00-2:30 p.m. Fee: $ 5
Propulsion by gravitational fields is possi-
ble and perhaps is already being done by
our military. In this PowerPoint lecture, Dr.
Farrell explains the difference between
gravitational field propulsion and impulse
propulsion such as is done with rockets
and jets. He begins by carefully explaining
the difference. He then launches into the
advantages of field propulsion over im-
pulse propulsion. Foe instance, accelera-
tions at 100 g’s or greater without harming
the occupants allows for trips to the moon
in 20 minutes and trips to nearby stars in a
few days. The theoretical possibilities are
explained and then Dr. Farrell explains
what has and is being done to create gravi-
tational fields in the laboratory. Does the
Air Force’s B-2 bomber use gravitational
fields to enhance lift? These and other
questions are addressed.

those who have already completed two or
three Autobiography Writing courses and
who really do want to finish their stories.
They recognize the tremendous value of
meeting weekly with other students who
have the same burning desire and who
wish to share their writing with each other
every week. Dave will interact with each
individual to help in the editing and polish-
ing of their work. There will also be consid-
