    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

    AUGUST 20, 2012

Naval Hospital Partners With Marine Corps To Provide Innovative Hot

    Weather Injury Training

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C.Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune will be hosting a comprehensive

training seminar for local Navy and Marine Corps unit leaders and medical personnel on how toprevent severe injury or death from hot weather injuries using an innovative heat injury treatment

method at the Camp Lejeune Base Theater Aug. 24. This will be the first training seminar as partof a larger, national training initiative within Navy Medicine using a local, internally-produced

training video featuring heat injury prevention and cooling techniques.

Leadership from Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Marine Corps Air Station New River, IIMarine Expeditionary Force (II MEF), 2nd Division (2D), Marine Aircraft Wing (MAW),

Marine Logistics Group (MLG), School of Infantry, Camp Geiger, and Marine Corps Special

Operations Group (MARSOC) may be present.

The goal of the training seminar is to remind leaders and medical personnel about strategies for

preventing heat injuries and for administering life-saving first responder treatments when they

occur. For example, using bed sheets immersed in an ice-water slurry and then wrapped around a

heat casualty like a burrito has been proven to decrease a victims core temperature from 108degrees to 102 degrees in 15 to 20 minutes. Cooling body temperatures using traditionally

known methods can take up to an hour, greatly increasing the risk of heat stroke, organ damage,or death.

Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune has employed these heat injury cooling methods for nearly threeyears, resulting in zero heat deaths for Sailors stationed at local Navy commands who suffered

from heat injuries. NHCL proudly partners with surrounding Marine Corps leadership, and has

spearheaded the movement to train Navy Medicine personnel around the country with an

internally-produced training video upon the completion of this seminar.

MEDIA ADVISORY: NHCLs Public Affairs Department is offering an opportunity to

witness the training, learn about the cooling and prevention techniques, and talk to Naval

Hospital Camp Lejeune leadership who are spearheading this national training initiative.
