While a toothbrush is effective in cleaning teeth surfaces, the bristles cannot adequately clean between the teeth. By brushing alone, and not flossing, 30% of the tooth structure is left uncleaned. Dental floss is the best choice to remove plaque from these difficult areas. According to the American Dental Association, however, only about 12 percent of Americans floss daily. Many experts recommend flossing before brushing, so that fluoride from the toothpaste has a better chance of reaching between teeth. Some people brush their teeth but skip flossing because their mouth feels clean. This is not a good idea. Floss should be used at least once a day for 2-3 minutes. It is important to be consistent, starting in the same place and working your way around the dental arch so as not to miss any spots. More on Back Page. “I DON’T NEED TO FLOSS BECAUSE I

r. Tischke is a Michigan native. She completed her undergraduate studies in

electrical engineering at Kettering University while working for Buick Motor Company. As satisfying as engineering was, it did not quench her childhood desire to become a pilot.EARNED “WINGS OF GOLD”Dr. Tischke became a commissioned officer in the Navy, earned her “Wings of Gold” and served on active duty for 10 years as an Aviator. She accomplished 150 carrier landings and completed a tour as a flight instructor in jets.Dr. Tischke chose dentistry after the Navy so that she could utilize her attention to detail and love of art and science. As a health care provider, Dr Tischke understands the amount of trust her patients place in her and in the specialists she recommends. Which is why she is

committed to staying abreast of the latest procedures and technology to best serve her patients’ needs with minimally invasive dentistry. She is currently enrolled in the Dawson Academy of Continuing Education and has participated in several “hands on” esthetic courses taught by some of the leading cosmetic dentists in the nation.

When not practicing dentistry, Dr Tischke loves to spend time with her family. She and her husband, Jim, have been married for 23 years and are both retired Naval Aviators. Jim has been flying for Chicago’s hometown airline, United, for over 17 years. They have four

children, whose activities keep them busy, usually at hockey rinks, gymnastic meets, swim meets and art studios, but they wouldn’t have it any other way. When Dr. Tischke does get free time, she usually spends it going for a run, playing hockey or napping.

Most dental insurance plans cover a specific maximum for dental services on an annual basis, typically ending on December 31st. If this amount is not used, the insurance company starts over when your annual plan expires and sets a new maximum for the upcoming year. Take advantage of the dental coverage that you or your employer have already paid for. Most dental plans do not allow for rollover of benefits into the new year. Others, such as some Delta Dental plans, will only allow a rollover if you have had at least one cleaning and oral exam during the plan year. As a complimentary service, we can help

you find out if you have any benefits remaining for the year.

If you have had any dental work done this year, you have probably paid your deductible already. You should make your appointment now if any work still needs to be completed. Wait until next year and you will have to pay another deductible.

Lastly, don’t wait until the last minute to make your appointment--we may not be able to accommodate your preferred day and time.

Four Reasons to Floss DailyPrevent Gingivitis/Gum Disease. The plaque that builds up over time will harden to form tartar, a thick deposit that can only be removed with a professional cleaning. Tartar buildup can lead to gingivitis--red, swollen gums that are the first stage of gum disease. Left untreated, the tartar can get below the gum line and cause severe gum disease (periodontal disease). In the majority of people, gum disease begins in between the teeth--the area that only floss can reach. Studies show that 66% of Americans have some form of gum disease.

Maintain Healthy Heart. Studies show a link between gum disease and heart disease. Inflamed gums contain bacteria which can enter the blood stream and find their way to your heart. Once there, they can cause clotting and contribute to clogging of the arteries, which can lead to heart disease.

Lower Risk of Preterm Birth. Studies show that gum disease places pregnant

women at greater risk of preterm birth than alcohol consumption and smoking. Preterm birth complicates 12% of all pregnancies and is one of the leading causes of infant mortality.

Reduce Risk of Cancer. Among those with gum disease, studies show a 30-50% increase in risk of lung, kidney, and blood cancers. A 2007 Harvard University study found that 63% of men with pancreatic cancer also had gum disease. Certain types of bacteria present in gum disease can double the risk of pancreatic cancer.
