ARIS – process modeling
tool
dr Tomasz Ordysiński
Modeling in ARIS ARIS (Architecture of Integrated Information System) is a concept,
method and tool to design and model new processes or improve existing ones.
First time introduced by prof. Sheer in 1991 as CASE tool to support computer IS implementation.
Second step – focus on process.
Aspects of ARIS:
Concept of ARIS (1) – general idea of process modeling,
Concept of ARIS (2) – set of methods to model data, functions, organization and processes,
Concept of ARIS (3) – as a base of ARIS-Toolset software
ARIS – House of Business Engineering – complex concept of process management
Why process modeling before IS
application?
The process analysis/modeling shows exact data flows,
requirements so the final application is perfectly fitted to
organization.
Complex IT solutions require a lot of work done by
several people – they must operate with the same term,
data definition and general view to user’s needs.
Application lifecycle according to
ARIS
In ARIS concept we can distinguish 5 phases of IS
lifecycle (following picture)
On steps 2,3 and 4 there are used 3 basic description
levels according to process analysis.
ARIS - views Data View - What information is
important? (ie.: Customer, Supplier, Product, Material Calculation)
Function View - Which functions will be performed? (ie.: Production Plan Creation, Order Processing)
Organization View - Which organizational units exist? (ie.: Purchasing, Sales, Accounts)
Process View - The relationship between data, functions and organizational units
Product/Service View - Which products/services are important? (ie.: checked order, customer, invoice)

Summarization
ARIS vs. other architectures of process
modeling
The unique feature of ARIS is integration of:
architecture
modeling methods
IT modeling tool
Other concepts usually focus on one of those aspects.
The most known are:
CIMOSA (Computer Integrated Manufacturing Open System
Architecture)
IFIP – ISM (Information System Methodology)
ISA (Information System Architecture)

Perspectives of IFIP (ISM) architecture
12 phases of lifecycle.
Lack of organization view.

Case study
Small advertising agency in Szczecin produces calendars, mugs,
paper and other gadgets with customer logo or according to any
specific order.
During a year there is a strong trend that 80% of annual income is
generated from October till December (mainly calendars)
The number of customers and orders is very high than and all the
production order „queue” is kept in production director head. Last
year he got sick and production was stopped – company lost a lot of
customers and money.
When new customer appears there is prepared unique project for
him (graphical) and send to him for approval in printed form. There
number of project which were done for nothing is high. Customer
sends back the answer/improvements or just rejection.
What do you think should be reorganized and how?
