Unani employs a holistic approach to the prevention and treatment of disease. It accepts the importance of the physical, mental and spiritual dimensions of the individual person, and bears these in mind, especially during treatment. It differs from conventional medicine in that it not only addresses the symptoms of lifestyle diseases but also identifies and deals with the underlying causes. The temperamental / humoral theory provides for a comprehensive understanding of the risk factors, pathological processes and therapeutic interventions for the effective management and treatment of lifestyle diseases.

This system is recognized by Govt. of India, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, under the Act-1970, to provide for the constitution of a Central Council of Indian Medicine and to maintain a Central Register of Indian Medicine. The CCIM makes the education regulations. This is a statutory body set up by an Act of Parliament. The training and education in Unani are being regulated by the CCIM Act. At present lots of recognized under graduate and P.G. Unani colleges with their specialties in the P.G. courses are nourishing the Unani students as future bright perspective Doctors with the depth of Unani concepts and fundamentals.

The Fundamentals of Hifzane SehatIlaj-bil-Ghiza (Dietotherapy), Ilaj-bit-Tadbeer (Regimenal Therapy)Six Essentials of Life (Asbabe Sitta Zarooria).

Ilaj-bil-Ghiza (Dietotherapy)It aims at treating certain ailments by controlling the intake of

food and regulating the quality of the food. The traditional system of medicine, Unani lays stress on the importance of diet on health. According to Avicenna, most of the illnesses arise as a result of prolonged disorders related to diet and regimen. The objectives of diet therapy is to increase or decrease body weight , to rest a particular organ, to  adjust  the  diet  to  the  body’s  ability  to  use certain foods, to produce a specific effect as a remedy (e.g., regulation of blood sugar in diabetes), to overcome deficiencies by the addition of food rich   in   some necessary   element   and to provide  ease  of  digestion  by  omitting irritating  substances,  such  as  fiber,  spices,  or high-fat foods.

Ilaj-bit-Tadbeer (Regimenal Therapy) There are 12 identified specific regimental therapies in Unani medicine. These include Cupping (Hajamat), Leaching (Taleeq), Venesection (Fasad), Dalak (Massage), Hammam (Turkish bath), Exercise (Riyazat), Diuresis (Idrar), Sweating (Tareeq), Cauterization (Kai), Counter irritation (Imala), Purging (Ishal) and Vomiting (Qai). Some of commonly used Regimental therapies are as follows:

Riyazat (Exercise) Any type of exercise (hard, moderate or light) produces different effect in the body. The moderate exercise increases Hararat-e-Ghariziya (Vital force of body), helps to eliminate the waste products of body through urine, stool and sweat etc. It makes the organs stronger and increases the appetite.

Dalak (Massage) Any method of pressure on or friction against, or stroking, kneading, rubbing, tapping, pounding, vibrating or stimulating of the external soft parts of the body with the hands or other objects like rough cloth with or without rubbing oils, creams, lotions, ointments or other similar preparations used in this practice. Unani medicine describes detailed types of massage e.g. hard massage, soft massage, prolonged massage or moderate massage.

Leaching (Taleeq) Leeches have been used in medicine for thousands of years. Leeches remove blood ("phlebotomize") from their host, and they release pain-killing (anesthetic) and blood-thinning (anticoagulant) substances with their saliva. Live leeches are currently used to treat blood-congested limbs, which otherwise might die or require amputation, if the pooling blood cannot be removed any other way. They are also sometimes used to provide pain relief, and for many other therapeutic effects.

Cupping (Hajamat) Refers to as an ancient Unani practice in which a cup is applied to the skin and the pressure in the cup is reduced (by using change in heat or by suctioning out air), so that the skin and superficial muscle layer is drawn into and held in the cup. In some cases, the cup may be moved while the suction of skin is active, causing a regional pulling of the skin and muscle It improves the regional circulation and helps in the chronic aliments of joints.

Six Essentials of Life (Asbabe Sitta Zarooria). These six factors essentially influence each and every one and all mental and somatic diseases are due to their imbalance. The correct application of these factors can lead to long and healthy life. Unani system of medicine recognizes the influence of surroundings and ecological conditions on the state of health of human beings. A balanced relationship between the six essential factors keeps the humors and the temperament on the right track. The non-essential factors like habit, habitat, cosmic and terrestrial influences, social factors, profession etc influence only those who come across them. This system aims at restoring the equilibrium of various elements and faculties of the human body. It places great emphasis, on the one hand, on the maintenance of proper ecological balance and on the other, on keeping water, food and air free from pollution.
