Brief outline
Dr. Prasanta Kumar Biswas did his M. Sc. in 1977 from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT),
Kharagpur, India and obtained his Ph. D. (Sc.) degree in 1982 from the Calcutta University, India. He
did his dissertation work in the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS), Jadavpur,
Kolkata, India with four publications including two nos. in the Journal of Chemical Society, Dalton
Transactions under Royal Society of Chemistry, UK. During his postdoctoral work in IACS he
assisted considerably in the guidance of his Supervisor’s other research scholars (JRF/SRF) for their
publications and dissertation work.
Dr. P. K. Biswas initiated CSIR-CGCRI research in 1984 on the development of sol-gel optical
coatings on glass for various applications such as antireflection, anti-glare, high reflection (50%), etc.
Based on three Indian patents on sol-gel application, three processes have been made for
commercial release of antiglare coatings on ophthalmic glass lens, sheet glass and also of
antireflective coatings on ophthalmic and other circular glass lenses. These were licensed (1992-
2002) to five entrepreneurs in India for commercial exploitation. Total ECF from licensing was about
INR 1117000.00. In addition one more process on the production of cost effective ITO coated glass
has been developed in 2012 for commercial release (Please see below).
Achievement of an Indo-French collaborative project (1999-2002) between Universite
Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris, France (Collaborator, Prof. Jack Livage) and CSIR-CGCRI, India was
marked as “Excellent” by the Scientific Council of IFCPAR in 2002 for the fabrication of smart
window (2”x 3”) with considerable efficiency of Colorless ↔ Blue by -2V to +2V sweep. A patent on
the processing of electrochromic system has been granted in 2010. At that time, Tata Motor in India
showed much interest for the developmental work of smart window system.
Later, Dr. Biswas started (2000) an Indo-German collaborative project (cost, DM
67513.00) with ZAE Bayern, Wurzburg, Germany for the development of low emissivity coatings on
glass which was an outcome of CSIR Scientists’ exchange programme in 1999. This project ended
successfully in August, 2004 with the achievement of sol formulation of transparent conducting
oxide (TCO) coatings on glass to minimize thermal emissivity from 0.87 (of glass) to 0.35 with
the visible transmission of around 75%. This achievement was utilized to start a programme on
“Development of heat reflecting coatings on flat glass” under the 10th five year plan based CSIR
network project in India.
For strategic application, a challenging programme similar to Lawrence Livermore
National Laboratory (LLNL) in USA and Lemeil Laboratory in France was undertaken [under the
sponsorship of BRNS, DAE (1999 – 2004)] by Dr. Biswas in CSIR-CGCRI to develop laser damage
resistant sol-gel antireflective (AR) coatings on to the end surfaces of laser rods of 15-50 mm
dia and 200 – 300 mm length for high power laser applications at RRCAT, Indore, India. An
infrastructural facility has been established in CSIR-CGCRI for the coating on laser rods and the
outcome was that the developed coatings withstood ~3-4 GW/cm2 laser intensity of 8 Joules laser
energy with 5 ns pulse width for high power laser applications. Development of photostable dye
laser component for solid state dye laser is another item for strategic sector, which was
undertaken (2008-2012) in collaboration with the Department of Laser and Plasma Technology
Division (LPTD), BARC and BRNS, DAE sponsorship.
Dr. Biswas was also involved in leading two more activities, (i) development of heat
reflecting coatings on flat glass and (ii) development of glassy pure and doped nanosized
semiconductor coatings in thin film form for nonlinear optical (NLO) applications under CSIR Task
Force Programmes of 10th
five year plan (2002-2007). Under project (i) he has developed indium
tin oxide (ITO) coated glass of 130 mm x 135 mm dimensions with around 60% heat reflection (IR
region), very good visible transmissivity (~75%) and electrical sheet resistance (~30 ΩΩΩΩ/ ). As a
4
follow-up, DST, Govt. of India sponsored a National project (2009-2012) entitled “Development of
sol-gel ITO coatings on glass for various applications” which was a developmental work on a
processing Technology of ITO coatings on glass. As an outcome of the project, the Know-how on
the processing of cost effective sol-gel ITO coatings on glass of 300 mm x 300 mm dimensions
is now ready in CSIR-CGCRI for the transfer to interested entrepreneur ‘as is where is basis’. A
patent has been filed (Appl. No. 0464DEL2013) in India in February 19, 2013 for IPR protection. At
the time of project period, Industries like (1) Asahi India Glass Ltd. Taloja, (2) Moser Baer India
Ltd. Greater Noida and (3) Samtel Color Ltd. Ghaziabad showed much interest about the
processing of the ITO coated glass as these are low cost based product. If this process be
commercialized then the ITO coated glass may be available in the market with ~85% reduced rate. It
is a significant achievement as this glass is widely used as transparent electrode for dye sensitised
solar cell (DSSC), hybrid solar cells, plasma display panel (PDP) panels, OLED, etc. Another
important application is in the area of energy saving window system where glass of low thermal
emissivity is required.
Based on the basic knowledge gained in the activity (ii) under 10th five year plan of CSIR
Network Dr. Biswas successfully established additional International linkage with Nagoya
Institute of Technology, Japan (Collaborator, Prof. M. Nogami) (sponsored by DST and JSPS)
and National Institute of Chemistry, Slovenia (Collaborator, Dr. A. S. Vuk) (sponsored by DST
and Ministry of higher Education, Science and Technology, Govt of Slovenia). The outcome of these
collaborations was to generate QDs, transparent new ferromagnetic property in TCO at ambient
temperature by tailoring the particle / grain size of sol-gel based Transparent Conducting Oxide
(TCO) materials such as Indium Tin Oxide (ITO), Antimony Tin Oxide (ATO), etc.
Dr. Biswas also developed gel technology for fabrication of cost effective grating pattern
of oxides by capillary force lithography (CFL), promising component in disposable optical / chemical
sensors. He is trying to focus the different properties of foam based spongy ITO [IPR (Indian
Patent Appl. No. 148DEL2012 dated may 15, 2012) has been taken for the product patent) to find out its
potentiality in solar cells and stealth (such as RADAR absorbing material, very effective for
DRDO, Jodhpur) applications.
As a CSIR-CGCRI activity leader on the development of sustainable energy Dr Biswas
was also involved in formulating and co-ordinating to establish a CSIR-MNRE Network
programme under 12th
five year plan. It is a new approach to QDs based solar cells.
Since 1986 Dr. Biswas was associated with about twenty projects [sponsored (national /
international), in-house, CSIR network] taking part leading role in major projects. During his tenure
in CSIR-CGCRI he earned about INR 30000000.00 (~Rs. 300.00 Lakhs) through sponsorship.
Dr. Biswas visited different countries such as Geramny, France, Slovenia, Italy, Poland,
China, Japan, Vietnam and USA for international collaborative projects as well as for participation at
different International conferences to enrich the R and D activities of materials science.
The leadership / major initiative roles in National and International projects, student
supervision, etc along with the establishment of Agreement of Academic Exchange and Cooperation
between CSIR-CGCRI, India and Nagoya Institute of Technology, Japan in 2005, signify the
execution of managerial role of Dr. Biswas.
Overall ‘h’ index 20.1 (as per availability of citations-1010 for seventy four publications
in SCI journals), recognition as a recipient of MRSI medal in India (for significan contributions in
the area of materials science) and also recognition as an elected Fellow of West Bengal Academy
of Science and Technology (FAScT) distinguish Dr. P. K. Biswas as an Outstanding Researcher
which helped him to be permanent resident in USA.
