What is Cancer ?

Cancer is a disease caused by normal cells changing so that they grow in an uncontrolled way. The uncontrolled growth causes a lump called a tumor. If not treated, the tumor can cause problems in one or more of the following ways

Primary and Secondary Cancer

The place where a cancer begins is called the primary cancer. Cancers may also spread into nearby body tissues and it is called locally advanced cancer. For example, lung cancer can spread to the lining of the chest (the pleura). There they can start to grow into new tumors. Tumors from cancers that have spread are called secondary cancers or metastases

Diagnostic Tests for Cancer Patients

The most common diagnostic tests are described below

BiopsyA biopsy is the removal of a small amount of tissue for examination under a microscope.

Fine needle aspiration biopsy. This test uses a thin, hollow needle attached to a syringe to collect a small amount of fluid and cells from the suspicious area.

Positron emission tomography (PET) scan. A PET scan is a way to create pictures of organs and tissues inside the body.

MRI An MRI uses magnetic fields, not x-rays, to produce detailed images of the body.

Ultrasound An ultrasound uses sound waves to create a picture of the internal organs.

Signs and Symptoms of cancer

Unexplained weight lossWhen you lose weight for no known reason, it’s called anunexplained weight loss. An unexplained weight loss of 10 pounds or more may be the first sign of cancer.

FeverFever is very common with cancer, but it more often happens after cancer has spread from where it started.

FatigueFatigue is extreme tiredness that does not get better with rest. It may be an important symptom as cancer grows.

PainPain may be an early symptom with some cancers like bone cancers or testicular cancer.

Signs and Symptoms of cancer

Skin changesAlong with cancers of the skin, some other cancers can cause skin changes that can be seen. These signs and symptoms include:
